We read again today from the Gospel of Matthew. Let me give you some background information to help you understand the message of the “Word of God” as we hear it from St Matthew. Matthew’s Gospel is written in the form of a story or narrative. This does not imply of course, that it is not based in history. Also, more than any other Gospel is contains the sayings of Jesus. The Gospel was written in about 85AD and probably in Syria or Palestine. It was written for a community of converts to Christianity from Judaism. A key feature therefore is to emphasize Jewish heritage of Jesus and the early Church. But more than this, the main message is to show that Jesus is the fulfilment of all of God’s promises to the People of Israel. To truly continue in the traditions and hopes of Israel is now to believe in Jesus. More than any Gospel, Matthew quotes texts from the Old Testament to show that they are now being fulfilled in Jesus. His genealogy, unlike that in Luke’s Gospel which begins with Adam, starts with Abraham and clearly names Jesus as, “the son of David.” But Jesus is not just the Messiah for the Jewish People; he has a universal mission for the whole world which continues in the Church. Today we hear, “You are the light of the world.” Beginning last weekend, today we continue to read from the “Sermon on the Mount.” Just as Moses ascended Mount Sinai in the Old Testament and established the covenant based on the Law, now, Jesus is the new Moses who ascends a mount and inaugurates a new covenant or as we know it the New Testament. He doesn’t abolish the old Law or the prophets, but comes to complete them. “I have come not to abolish but to fulfil.” He doesn’t speak for God and deliver God’s word as Moses did; he speaks of his own authority. “You have heard that is was said to your ancestors……but I say to you….” The Sermon on the Mount does not present more laws or commandments, but something truly new; the dream or vision of God, the kingdom of heaven, which God will bring about in Jesus and his disciples who live in relationship with him and are empowered to share in his mission. Jesus calls us to go beyond the obligation of external laws or processes and empowers his disciples inwardly and from the heart to share in his universal love and bondless goodness. “Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you.” DISCIPLES RENEWAL GATHERINGS 2017 As a concrete expression of our response to the call to Renewal in Faith, our “Disciples-Renewal Gatherings” continue. Through praise and worship in song, sharing our lives, pondering the Word of God, praying and experiencing community in these gatherings we encounter Jesus and renew our relationship with him. Thursday nights from 7.00pm to 8.30pm including supper at Mount Gambier on March 2 & April 6 in the Small Hall and in Millicent on Feb 16, March 16 & April 20 in the Parish Hall. The first Gathering in Millicent is on Thursday Feb 16 at 7.00pm in the parish hall. It was Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI who said “We are Christians only if we encounter Christ.” By way of reaching out and sharing our faith, I encourage you to invite family members, neighbours and friends to come with you to a gathering. The Catholic Parishes of

MOUNT GAMBIER and MILLICENT Fifth Sunday – Year A 5

th February, 2017

THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW

During the Year A cycle of readings in the Sundays of Ordinary Time we read from Matthew’s Gospel.

The Gospel was written in about 85AD and

probably in Syria or Palestine. It was written for a community of converts to Christianity from

Judaism. A key feature therefore is to emphasize Jewish heritage of Jesus and the early Church. But more than this, the main message is to

show that Jesus is the fulfilment of all of

God’s promises to the People of Israel. To truly continue in the traditions and hopes of Israel is now to believe in Jesus. More than any Gospel, Matthew quotes texts from the Old Testament to show that they are now being fulfilled in Jesus. His genealogy, unlike that in Luke’s Gospel which begins with Adam, starts with Abraham and clearly names Jesus as, “the son of David.” But Jesus is not just the Messiah for the Jewish People; he has a universal mission for the

whole world which continues in the Church.

Today we hear, “You are the light of the world.”

Beginning last weekend, today we continue to read from the “Sermon on the Mount.” Just as Moses ascended Mount Sinai in the Old Testament and established the covenant based on the Law, now, Jesus is the new Moses who ascends a mount and inaugurates a new covenant or as we know it the New Testament. He doesn’t abolish the old Law or the prophets, but comes to complete them. “I have come not

to abolish but to fulfil.” He doesn’t speak for God and deliver God’s word as Moses did; he speaks of his own authority. “You have heard

that is was said to your ancestors……but I say

to you….”

The Sermon on the Mount does not present more laws or commandments, but something truly new; the dream or vision of God, the kingdom of heaven, which God will bring about in Jesus and his disciples who live in relationship with him and are empowered to share in his mission. Jesus calls us to go beyond the obligation of external

laws or processes and empowers his disciples inwardly and from the heart to share in his universal love and bondless goodness. “Love

your enemies, and pray for those who

persecute you.”

DISCIPLES RENEWAL GATHERINGS 2017

As a concrete expression of our response to the call to Renewal in Faith, our “Disciples-Renewal

Gatherings” continue. The first Gathering in Millicent is on Thursday

Feb 16 at 7.00pm in the parish hall.

It was Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI who said “We

are Christians only if we encounter Christ.”

By way of reaching out and sharing our faith, I encourage you to invite family members, neighbours and friends to come with you to a gathering. Please see the invitation cards in our churches. For further information please contact me.

God Bless

Psalm Response: A light rises in the darkness for the upright.

Gospel Acclamation: Alleluia, alleluia! I am the light of the world, says the Lord; the man who follows me will have the light of life. Alleluia!

TODAY’S GOSPEL: Matthew 5:13-16 Jesus said to his disciples: 'You are the salt of the earth. But if salt becomes tasteless, what can make it salty again? It is good for nothing, and can only be thrown out to be trampled underfoot by men. 'You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill-top cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on the lamp-stand where it shines for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine in the sight of men, so that, seeing your good works, they may give the praise to your Father in heaven.'

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
