Aluminium Can Ring PullsThese are collected locally by The Lions Club.

Batteries – Rechargeable (nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride, lithium)Rechargeable batteries contain many toxic chemicals and should not be sent to landfill. They are sent overseas for recycling, and the recycling products pay for the process. Those sold by DickSmiths can be returned for recycling to Dick Smiths, at no cost. Grant District Council have boxes at their Waste Transfer Station, and Tarpeena and Port MacDonnell Rural Transaction Centres, for collection of batteries for recycling.

Batteries – Alkaline (single use)Alkaline batteries are cheaper than rechargeable batteries, but less environmentally friendly. They are fully recycled in Australia by AusZinc, Port Kembla- the manganese, zinc, mercury and other metals are reused. Locally, Community Action for Sustainability (CAS)are collecting these batteries, and taking them to Battery World stores and Super Cheap Auto outlets. They send them to AusZinc, at no cost. Stores are in Warrnambool, and various locations in Adelaide.

Grant District Council also collect these batteries for recycling, in boxes at their Waste Transfer Station, and the Rural Transaction Centres at Tarpeena and Port MacDonnell. CASwill organise transport of these to the nearest Battery World or Super Cheap Auto outlet. The City Council Waste Transfer Station accept alkaline batteries. They are sent with other e-waste to E-cycle Recovery, in Gepps Cross, where the alkaline batteries are sent on to Sims, where they are recycled as scrap metal. Many of the elements are not reclaimed.

Beer Bottle Tops, Jam Jar Lids & Wire From Around Bubbly CorkIf placed loose in the blue bins, they are likely to end up in landfill, as they are too small to be picked up by the magnets. Planet Ark recommend they be placed into steel cans eg baked bean cans, and the top squeezed. These can go into the blue bins for kerbside recycling.

Plastic lidsDairy Farmers and Pura Milk lids are the same grade (grade 2) as the milk carton. The seals need to be removed and then the lids can be rolled into the cartons, and recycled. The seals are good for kids craft.

A triangle with a number in the middle is part of the Plastic Identification Code. These symbols identify the plastic type, not whether or not it can or cannot be recycled. Recycling centres in South West Victoria accept numbered lids for recycling, and CAS will be collecting these in Environment Month (June) at the Library.

Postage Stamps- UsedCollected by the Baptist Church and sold, with proceeds to Baptist Mission for World Aid. They can be dropped into the Baptist Church office on Mondays, Tuesdays or Fridays between 9 am and 1 pm, or left in the box in the front porch, outside office hours.
