Prayer Vigil on Sunday, June 28, from 1 to 2
pm. Join local priests, including Fr. David Taylor, new-ly ordained Fr. Matt Hawkins, clergy, and lay leaders at a Prayer Vigil standing in solidarity with Black Lives Matter at Freedom Corner, in the Hill District, Centre Avenue and Crawford Street. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Those participating will be wearing masks and practic-ing social distancing at this outdoor vigil.

June Letter Writing This month two letters
have been prepared by the Social Justice and Peace Committee: one to Governor Tom Wolf asking him to oppose national efforts to push through energy-polluting projects without environmental review or public input, and one to Sen. Pat Toomey seeking his support for an additional stimulus package to help people during this time of high unemployment and to support the U.S. Postal Service.

Pastor’s Note Take up your cross and follow me! It is always comforting when we visit friends and neighbors how people offer hospitality and make us feel welcomed. When someone comes into our home we offer them a bever-age, a snack, and see if they need anything. Those who have to travel for business know how comforting it
is when they go into a new city and a stranger goes out of their way to make them feel welcomed.
I often hear from visitors who come to our parish for the first time how welcomed they feel when ushers greet them at the door, a parishioner slides over in the pew so the guest can sit, or simply offers a smile, waves, or says hello. When we greet others we show what it truly means to be a disciple. This weekend we celebrate the Thir-teenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The readings this week-end focus on hospitality and being a disciple of Jesus.
In the first reading from the Book of Kings, we read how a woman has great respect for the word of God and offers hospitality to the prophet Elisha at her home in Shunem in Northern Israel. The prophet is welcomed anytime. Her desire for spiritual nourishment from Elisha has brought life into her home. In the Gospel of Matthew, we read the conclusion of Matthew’s “Missionary Discourse.” Jesus stresses that requirements for being a disciple are not easy, that there will be sacrifices that need to be made above personal family desires. The Missionary Discourse is part of the instructions given by Jesus to the twelve as he sends them out to preach the good news.
Each of us has a cross to carry: illness, un-employment, doubts, and racism. Let us furnish a place in our heart for our Lord to stay so that we may gain strength and nour-ishment on our journey to the kingdom.
Take up your cross and follow me! Summer Daily Mass Join us for daily Mass Monday through Saturday at St. Bede at 9 am. We also have the Miraculous Medal Nove-na on Mondays and the Mother of Perpetual Help Novena on Wednesdays. Eucharistic Adoration and Confessions are held on Saturdays at St. Bede from 9:30 am to 10:30 am. Independence Day is this Saturday - July 4 - we will have the regular daily 9 am Mass, confessions and adoration at St. Bede and 4pm Vigil Mass at St. James. Let us celebrate Independence Day thanking God for our Faith and Freedom and pray for healing and unity in our country. Please note that our parish office will be closed this Fri-day, July 3, in observance of Independence Day. The office will reopen Monday, July 6 at 9 am.
Parish Improvements
Buch Electric Company of Bethel Park updated two outdoor sensor LED lights on Mulberry Street at the St. James Chapel side door. They will now automatically op-erate “dawn to dusk.” They are also updating the electri-cal system on the second floor of the St. James Rectory. New wiring and plugs are being installed to bring the main electric panel in the basement up to code. Renovations to the Sister Thea Bowman Catholic Academy cafeteria continue. An asbestos abatement project has been completed and French drains and new floor tile will be installed. Funds from The Extra Mile Foundation and a Diocesan Insurance Claim from past flooding damage are helping to make this project a possi-bility. The Diocesan Office of Property and Planning is assisting in overseeing this project. Mariani & Richards has completed outside work on St. James Church with spot pointing and mortar repairs. Also three cracked windows were also repaired. Total cost of this project was $80,000. Thank you to those who donat-ed to the “Roof Fund” and those who contribute to our Maintenance Fund to make this project a possibility. St. Mary Magdalene Parish received a $25,000 grant from the Pittsburgh Foundation for social ministries and community outreach due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This grant will provide food and services to our local com-munity in need. New logo for our parish! On the front cover of our bulletin is our new parish logo. Special thanks to Miller Creative Group for creating our new logo. Congratulations to Rev. Jeffrey M. Craig, Rev. Mi-chael J. Faix, and Rev. C. Matthew Hawkins who are being ordained priests this weekend at St. Paul Cathe-dral. Something to Think About…

Father Taylor’s Reflection
When I went to the seminary to study for the priesthood, it was a major change in my life. I had graduated from the University of Cincinnati and was working full time. I was still living at home with my family. Living in Chicago was a different and often lonely experi-ence. During that time my family moved away from Southern Ohio
into the Pittsburgh area. Soon, many of my brothers and sisters moved away to all parts of the country. Our par-ents passed away during this time.
It is often said that change is good when It offers new opportunities. A vocation to the priesthood or religious life can demand many changes along the way. Jesus knew that he was asking many of his followers to make such sacrifices. He was not minimizing the importance of family but rather being realistic about the role of sacri-fice in serving others.
There are many families today who have to be uprooted in desperation and in fear for their life. This often is the reality for immigrants and refugees. When it involves separation of families, it can be devastating.
When we have decided to follow the Lord, we have to be open to where this may lead us.

Pasta Products are requested for our parish pantries during the month of July. Please bring dona-tions to one of the churches. If you bring them to the Parish Office, 509 S. Dallas Avenue in Point Breeze, it is preferred that they be brought between 10 am and 5 pm, Monday through Friday. If not, they can be left on the front or back porch. It is suggested (but not necessary at this time) that donations no longer be put in plastic bags but recyclable bags which will then be used at the pantries.

Saint Benedict the Moor Parish On June 19, Bishop David Zubik announced the es-tablishment of a personal parish for the black Catholic Community in the Diocese of Pittsburgh, under the title of Saint Benedict the Moor Parish, effective July 13, 2020.
A personal parish is a parish that responds to specific spiritual needs often related to a particular culture or an extraordinary need. In the case of a personal par-ish, anyone who desires to be a part of that Catholic community is welcome to join.
May God bless the parishioners of the new parish.
