WELCOME
TODAY’S GOSPEL MESSAGE Sunday, August 5th
John 6:24-35
“Jesus said to [the crowd], ‘I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.’”
In today’s second reading, Saint Paul “tells the Christian community at Ephesus…that they are to ‘put away the old self … and … put on the new self,’ making a total conversion (Ephesians 4:22-24). In the Gospel, Jesus tells the crowd that God gives them the true bread from heaven: Jesus, the Bread of Life. This is what the acceptance of Christ entails. This is the difference between working for ‘food that perishes’ and ‘food that endures for eternal life’ (John 6:27).”

To Pastors, Priest Administrators, All Priests “My Dear Brother Priest,
I invite you and your parishioners to join me and Catholics nationwide in a weekly moment of prayer from early August to late September 2018 for the legal protection of human life.
As soon as Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement, pro-abortion groups began lobbying the U.S. Senate to reject any nominee who does not promise to endorse Roe v. Wade. We should certainly raise grave concerns about a confirmation process that is being grossly distorted by efforts to subject judicial nominees to a litmus test of support for abortion. And we must pray.
Each Friday, from August 3 to September 28, 2018, we’ll have the opportunity to join in a nine-week effort of prayer, fasting and education that a change in the U.S. Supreme Court will move our nation closer to the day when every human being is protected in law and welcomed in life.
As part of the USCCB Call to Prayer, participants can receive weekly prayer reminders by text message or email. In addition to the current invitation to fast on Fridays, participants will be encouraged to pray one Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be for this intention and will receive important facts about how Roe is not health care, is bad law, and fails women.
Please encourage your parishioners to sign up at www.usccb.org/pray for this and the continuing Call to Prayer initiatives.
May Our Lady of Guadalupe intercede for the healing of our nation and our people from decades of abortion on demand. Thank you for your continued, prayerful leadership.
Sincerely yours in Christ the Redeemer, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R. Archbishop of Newark”

Homeless Family Program Hosted by OLMC
Families Together, A Promise Kept
This past week we joined together as a community to support two working homeless families. Led by our pastor, fr. Dan, we opened the doors of our facility and welcomed two beautiful families that are in the process of getting back on their feet.
I was overwhelmed by the outpouring of spiritual and financial support as well as the hard hours of serving meals, cleaning, running around with kids and staying overnight, sleeping on cots in classrooms. You, our beloved parishioners, are once again what makes OLMC such a special place to be and, if I can be so bold, I think our guests felt that way too.
We will never know the impact we have on other people’s lives, but I know that for one week, two families, under nearly unbearable circumstances, were held together. The promise that “all are welcome at OLMC,” no matter what, was kept.
I wasn't surprised. I was particularly touched to see so many teens and young children serving alongside their parents. Catholic service is truly a family affair at OLMC! A favorite moment from the week—our guests and young parishioners created a play on stage, even one of our guests’ moms jumped in and went on stage! What a journey it has been to get to this moment, not to mention what that journey must have been for our guests.
I am also profoundly proud of our staff and Church leadership. I know I may border on the condescending (and I don't mean to!), but I am so incredibly honored to work with this group of amazing Academy faculty and Church staff. As soon as we began this project, fr. Dan took the first shift, Deacon Anthony right behind him, and bags of donations from Academy teachers and Facilities staff began to litter my office. Personal checks and gift cards from secretaries and Parish Advisory Board members also appeared on my desk.
The parishioners’ sweat, prayers and laughs made it happen. All for Christ! It was a moving, exhausting and really fun week at OLMC. Thank you, thank you, and thank you again.
Until the next adventure!
I'll be seeing you, Elliot Guerra

“God Can Change Any Situation
Let us not be closed to the newness that God wants to bring into our lives! Are we often weary, disheartened, and sad? Do we feel weighed down by our sins? Do we think that we won’t be able to cope? Let us not close our hearts; let us not lose confidence; let us never give up. There are no situations which God cannot change; there is no sin which he cannot forgive if only we open ourselves to him.” Source:

“Imagine if we discovered that all highly engaged Catholics had four things in common. Then imagine if it could be demonstrated that when someone started embracing these four things they were relatively quickly transformed from a disengaged Catholic into a highly engaged Catholic.
Highly engaged Catholics have four things in common, the four signs of a Dynamic Catholic:
1. Prayer: Dynamic Catholics have a daily commitment to prayer.
2. Study: Dynamic Catholics are continuous learners.
3. Generosity: Dynamic Catholics are generous.
4. Evangelization: Dynamic Catholics invite others to grow spiritually by sharing the love of God with them.”

“O my God, fill my soul with
holy joy, courage and strength to serve You.
Enkindle Your love in me and then walk with me
along the next stretch of road before me.
I do not see very far ahead, but when I have arrived
where the horizon now closes down, a new prospect will open before me,
and I shall meet it with peace.”
– St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross
(Edith Stein) Carmelite Feast Day: August 9th
The Transfiguration of the Lord Feast: August 6
The Transfiguration of the Lord has been observed by the universal Church since the fifteenth century. It was celebrated in the East as early as the fifth century. “The Transfiguration gives us a foretaste of Christ's glorious coming, when he ‘will change our lowly body to be like his glorious body’ (Catechism of the Catholic Church #556).”
v v v
Saint Dominic
Priest Memorial: August 8
Saint Dominic “began his priestly life as a cathedral canon. He adopted an austere lifestyle of begging and preaching and laid the foundations for the new Order of Preachers (the Dominicans) for both women and men.”
v v v
Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross Feast: August 9
This week we remember Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, a Carmelite saint whose feast day is August 9th. Edith Stein was born a Jew in Germany. After reading the autobiography of St. Teresa of Avila, she converted to Catholicism and joined the Carmelites.
v v v
Saint Lawrence
Deacon and Martyr Feast: August 10
“According to tradition, when asked to surrender the Church’s riches, Lawrence gathered the poor and said they were the Church’s real treasure. For this affront, he was put to death. He was the most venerated Roman martyr of the early Church and is a patron of Rome.”
v v v
Saint Clare
Virgin Memorial: August 11
Saint Clare was made “superior of a community in San Damiano. The Poor Clares practiced radical poverty like the Franciscans, sleeping on the ground and going without shoes.” She was respected as a new leader of women and credited with many miracles. Two years after her death she was canonized.
