August 30, 2015 Dear Brothers and Sisters of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, I wrote a few weeks back that I would only be writing these letters when I actually had something to say. Today, I have something that I am very pleased to say. Having consulted with the staff and the Parish Advisory Board, and having solicited and received some feedback from the parish community at large, I am very pleased to say that everyone who spoke up or e-mailed totally endorsed the idea that we offer Holy Communion under both forms once again. Therefore, beginning on the weekend of September 12 – 13, there will be Communion stations to receive the Body of Christ and additional stations to receive the Blood of Christ. We will also do this at each weekday Mass and all other Masses celebrated here. There are a few additional facts to keep in mind: We believe, as Catholics, in the Real Presence of Christ in both of the sacred elements – the bread, the Body of Christ and the wine, or the Blood of Christ. You are invited to partake of both at each Mass, but you do not have to do so. When you take Communion, you partake of the Real Presence under either form. If you do not wish to receive from the cup or the chalice, you certainly do not need to do so. When you are ill or concerned about some transmittable health issue, you probably should not receive from the cup. At this time we have 64 Eucharistic Ministers already trained and serving at various Masses. It would be nice to have about 35 more. In addition to serving at Mass, various Eucharistic Ministers also bring Holy Communion to the homebound, to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, and to County Manor Rehabilitation and Healthcare. I recently have been asked to celebrate Mass at Bright Side Manor and to bring Communion there as well. So, I welcome additional Eucharistic Ministers to help with this facet of the ministry. We will hold a Eucharistic Ministry Training Session on Saturday, September 12 at 9:30 a.m. in the church for new volunteers and additional training will be scheduled soon thereafter. Thank you, dear Church family. I hope all our future decisions are as easy as this one. Yours in Christ and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, fr. Dan [email protected]

Tasks Of Catechesis
“Jesus formed his disciples by making known to them the various dimensions of the Kingdom of God.
• He entrusted to them ‘the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven’ (Matthew 13:11);
• He taught them how to pray (Luke 11:2);
• He opened his “meek and humble heart’ to them (Matthew 11:29);
• He sent them ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit (Luke 10:1).”

Catechetical Sunday September 20, 2015
‘Those whom the community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth [at the 10:00 a.m. Mass on September 20th] to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith.’

The Passion of St. John the Baptist August 29th
John criticized Herod the tetrarch for his incestuous and adulterous marriage to Herodias, who was both his niece and his brother’s wife. As a result, Herod had John imprisoned. At Herod’s birthday celebration, Herod promised to give Herodias’ daughter, Salome, anything she wanted. Salome requested that she be given the head of John the Baptist on a platter. Herod kept his promise and had John beheaded. May we have courage to demand that those in authority be held accountable for their actions.

WEEKLY RUNDOWN
Leaves o f Hope
This week we continue a summer reflection series on creation, spirituality and beauty. Here you’ll find theological articles, poetry, and reflections to challenge and inspire.
Faith, Hope and Love Faith Three of the best rewards are at the heart of our faith; in fact, the first one we actually call faith, a precious gift from God that tells us we are wonderfully created by a loving God. We have to be open to receive and then exercise faith to keep it strong and growing. Jesus said he could not heal or perform miracles in certain places because of the lack of faith he found there. However, some of his miracles happened because ordinary people like you or I had faith. Hope The second reward is hope. Despair is the opposite of hope. Hope keeps us looking forward to the good, beautiful, and happy things God wants to give us in this life, and even more in the life to come. Hope lifts our hearts with joyful expectations now as we accept God’s current gifts. Hope, with faith, looks forward to even greater rewards to come. Love The greatest prize in life is love, and it flows from faith. Fear is the opposite of love. If we have faith that God loves us and looks after us, we can overcome fears and be free to find solutions to problems and dangers that may arise. Free from fear and knowing God loves us, we can become channels of God’s love in the world. These gifts of God work together in a circuit in which each helps and supports the other. Faith in God helps hope to grow, and faith and hope help overcome fears. Then we become free to let God’s love flow through us to others.”
Heiberg, Jeanne. Catechist. Dayton, OH: Peter Li Education Group, February 2015.
