The Second Collection at the Cathedral supports our outreach to people in our area who are homeless, poor, or unemployed. Thank you for your continued generosity to those in need.

Bishop Daly has designated October 30th as “Stewardship Sunday” throughout the Diocese of Spokane. For some parishes, the theology of stewardship will be a new concept. At the Cathedral, however, we regularly reflect on this form of discipleship through homilies, bulletin announcements, etc. One aspect of this theology calls us to be good stewards of our time and talent. This is the context in which I would like to make parishioners aware of some upcoming needs we have in our parish. Please consider giving back some of your time and talent through the following volunteer opportunities:
● Most immediately, we need a regular volunteer to pass out sandwiches at the office on Wednesday afternoons from 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm.
● Over the next three or four days, we will be sorting and distributing school supplies that our parishioners have so generously donated for our Catholic schoolchildren. Two to three volunteers would help this process go smoothly.
● Next Tuesday, August 30th, we will hold our annual BBQ for those in our community who are poor and homeless. We need between twelve to eighteen volunteers to help serve meals during half-hour time slots.
● By the end of this coming week, we will be stuffing 500 “goodie bags” to hand out at next week’s BBQ, and six volunteers should make light work of this.
● Altar server training will happen next Saturday, August 27th at 10:30 a.m. for new servers who will join current servers for training and updates. The reality of our lives is that all of us are very busy with everything from our jobs, work around the house, and family obligations. As you balance this busyness with your stewardship of time and talent, please consider giving back through one of the opportunities listed above. Restoration Information Fr. Connall and Robert Carr will be leading an information session regarding the removal of the cloud and the resulting impact on our Cathedral Sanctuary as well as issues related to our Cathedral organs. School Supply Collection
Our School Supply Drive for Catholic schoolchildren is almost over! Baskets are
at the entrances of the Cathedral awaiting your final donations. We will begin sorting and delivering these supplies on Tuesday, as school begins just next week! We appreciate your past generosity & hope this year will be the same! Items especially suggested by the
schools are: Sharpened pencils, colored markers, crayons, water colors, glue sticks and glue bottles, blunt and sharp scissors, back packs, pencil boxes, Wet Ones, Kleenex, dry erase markers, white board erasers, composition notebooks, colored folders, 3-ring binders, copy machine paper, 12 inch rulers with metric units, hand sanitizer, loose leaf paper, ball-point pens, protractors, compasses, calculators, index cards, dictionaries, thesauruses, Bibles, thumb drives, and, finally, donations for school sweatshirts, uniforms, socks, tights, and underclothes. Meal for Those in Need Volunteers Needed!
On Tuesday, August 30th, we will hold our annual BBQ for the poor and homeless community in downtown Spokane. This is a wonderful event at which many extra services are offered, including haircuts, veterinary services, and information on various community outreach programs. We need volunteers to help serve food. The event runs
from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. If you would like to volunteer any of your time, please sign up with the Parish Office. It’s not uncommon for us to serve over 1,000 meals at this event, so please do not show up to serve without calling first, as this can create problems keeping things running smoothly.
Our Cathedral Poor Fund is also sponsoring a table that is handing out “goodie bags” with basic toiletries & necessities. We are planning on making 500 of these later this week and would love to have help stuffing them. In response to the Church’s ongoing mission of evangelization, the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes will be offering a program of instruction for those interested in the Catholic Faith and in living a full sacramental life within the Church. This program may be of interest to the unbaptized, or to the baptized non-Catholic Christians who wish to become fully initiated into the Catholic Church. Scriptural Reflection
August 21, 2016 — Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time
IS 66: 18-21; PS 117: 1-2; HEB 12: 5-7, 11-13; LK 13: 22-30
“For behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last” (Luke 13:30). With those words Jesus makes it clear to us that there are no lines, no privileges in heaven. Today’s Gospel from the Book of Luke — in fact all of our readings for today, this 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time — have to do with salvation. It is difficult to be faithful and Catholic without thinking about heaven on occasion, and the Lord and St. Paul often in his letters, remind us over and over that we are to be striving for that — that our thoughts should be as much on the next life as on this one. Yet when we hear that
Gospel that the first will be last and the last will be first, we may think there is some lack of justice there. Jesus does not state this as a definite. He actually is telling us that the first may be last and the last may be first. The truth is that it really is not important. Our faith, the Lord, our sense of stewardship repeatedly remind us that what we think is important on earth may not be important in heaven at all. There is a Greek proverb that says, “Being first is good, but being last is perfect.” We are all called to discipleship and we need to answer that call. Responding before someone else does not make us better, but responding is very important.
