“If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.” -Harry S. Truman

As temperatures soar this summer, the word “hot” is a cliche. Some like it hot and some don’t. But the threadbare phrase

HOT HOLLYWOOD

In March 1959, the legendary screen goddess Mari-lyn Monroe starred in arguably her best film ever: “Some Like It Hot.” The film, a gangster-type com-edy directed by Billy Wilder, also featured Tony Cur-tis and Jack Lemmon.

Lemmon and Curtis play two down-and-out musicians who witness a brutal massacre. Chicago gangsters, knowing the two saw the murders, are in pursuit of them. Curtis and Lemmon leave town to escape them. The plot thickens when they take a job, disguising themselves as females, to play in an all-girl band bound for Florida. Monroe plays the vocalist, and the two female imposters – Josephine and Geraldine – fall hard for her and end up competing for her af-fection. There are a few twists and turns that get good laughs, but Lemmon and Curtis in drag is enough comedic buf-foonery.

The movie was nominated for many Academy awards and Golden Globes. Some Like It Hot won the Golden Globe for best motion picture comedy. Monroe won the Golden Globe for best actress in a musical or comedy, and Lemmon won for best actor.

In 1989, the Library of Congress se-lected the film for preservation in the

United States National Film Registry.

TURN UP THE HEATMusic fans might remember Robert Palmer’s single “Some Like It Hot,” which became a “hot” hit in the 1980s. Palmer wrote the lyrics for the song.

Some like it hot and some sweatwhen the heat is on.

Some feel the heat and decidethat they can’t go on.

Some like it hot, but you can’t tell how hot ‘til you try.

Some like it hot, so let’s turn up the heat ‘til we fry.

When it was released in 1985, “Some Like It Hot” hit the top 20 in the UK and No. 6 on the charts in the U.S.

THE HEAT IS ONThat also was a song. Glenn Frey re-corded “The Heat is On,” and it, too, be-came an international hit. As part of the soundtrack for the 1984 film “Beverly

Hills Cop,” the song reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1985.

But for the sake of this article, the “heat is on” is about weather. It’s summertime, and some like it hot (and some don’t).

People in Arizona, Texas and Florida must like it hot; whereas, Coloradans are perfectly OK with wearing a light jacket after the sun sets in the summer months.

However, sticking to heat, here’s an ex-ample of sticky heat nationwide.

• In mid-July a heat wave across 15 states spawned warnings when temper-atures were expected to rise above 105 degrees F.

• Wichita, Kan., hit 111 degrees – which has occurred there only 10 times since July 1888.

• Joplin, Mo., still recovering from a devastating spring tornado, reached 106

• Another record was broken in Spring-field, Mo., when temps soared to 102.

• Oklahoma City hit a record, with 108 degrees, and Tulsa experienced a record high of 104 degrees.

• For heat lovers in Arizona and Flor-ida, they’ll be glad to know that Phoe-nix ranks No. 1 for the most days a year when temperatures are above 89 de-grees or 99 degrees. Miami, although it doesn’t normally reach 100 degrees, stays hot enough year-round to average a mean temperature higher than Phoe-nix.

• Death Valley in eastern California averages temps in July and August be-tween 115 and 113.

• Many cities in the Mideast and Af-rica have long periods of 104 degree weather.

• Think U.S. soldiers: In Kuwait City, the daily maximum temperature aver-ages 115 degrees.

SOME LOVE IT HOT(AND SPICY)

Those who like food that sears the tongue and mouth are called pyro-gour-maniacs. These hot-food maniacs get their kicks from a collection of com-pounds called capsaicinoids – chemi-cals in chili peppers that determine the amount of “heat.”

In 1912, Wilbur Scoville wanted more than human opinion when it came to the heat in peppers and hot sauces so he developed the Scoville Organolep-tic Test. Volunteer tasters tried ground-up chilies diluted and neutralized by sugar water. The heat of the pepper was measured by the amount of sugar wa-ter needed to quell the heat. The hot-test pepper recorded scored 577,000 Scoville heat units, which took 577,000 cups of sugar to neutralize the heat in one cup of the pepper. Still called the Scoville heat unit today, the subjective human taste test has been eliminated. Instead, the capsaicinoids are extracted from the pepper and tested through a highly technical device.

Hot pepper eating contests exist world-wide for the daring pyro-gourmaniac, but how many could eat the hottest pepper in the world? According to the Guinness World Book of Records, the chili pepper called the Bhut Jolokai has earned its No. 1 place in the record book, measuring in at 1,001,304 Scoville heat units at New Mexico State University in 2006.

• It was 20th-century U.S. Attorney General and Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson who made the following sage observation: “The price of freedom of religion or of speech or of the press is that we must put up with, and even pay for, a good deal of rubbish.”

• It’s common knowledge that Mi-crosoft founder Bill Gates is regu-larly ranked as one of the world’s wealthiest people, but you might not realize that the Bill and Melin-da Gates Foundation is the world’s wealthiest charitable organization, with an endowment of $36.7 bil-lion.

• If you’re planning a trip to Iowa anytime soon, you might want to schedule a stop in the town of Wal-cott. There you can visit the Iowa 80 Truckstop, the world’s largest. With a whopping 220 acres, the truck stop is 1.5 times the size of Disneyland.

• In a traditional Hungarian wed-ding ceremony, the bride wears a headdress made of woven wheat, thought to help ensure the couple’s fertility.

• Historians say that famed German composer Ludwig van Beethoven was quite particular about his cof-fee. It is claimed that he counted out exactly 60 coffee beans for each cup that he drank.

• The longest mountain range on Earth is located underwater -- in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, to be specific. It’s nearly 25,000 miles long, and the only part of it that’s above water is the nation of Iceland.

• If you are an American of a certain age, you almost certainly spent time watching the 1960s sitcom “I Dream of Jeannie.” The iconic bottle where the genie lived wasn’t actually cre-ated for the show; the set dressers used a Jim Beam holiday decanter from 1964.

The Guinness Book of World Records, however, has rejected all claims for eat-ing the pepper, although many try.

Anandita Dutta Tamuly of India ate 51 Bhut Jolokia peppers on April 13, 2009, as celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey watched and cheered. Then 26 years of age, a homemaker and mother, she also smeared the seeds of 25 chilies in her eyes in one minute.

HOT SAUCE STUFF• The chili pepper comes from South America. Christopher Columbus discov-ered it and brought it home to Europe.

• Mexico grows more than 140 varieties of chili peppers.

• When hot sauce is consumed, the body reacts by sweating – it’s referred to as gustatory perspiration.

• In general, the smaller the pepper the hotter it is. The world’s hottest peppers measure less than 3 inches long.

• Chili peppers are a fruit and cholesterol free, low in sodium and calories, rich in Vitamins A and C; and a good source of folic acid, potassium and Vitamin E.

• If your mouth is scorched by a chili pepper, don’t drink water. The capsaicin does not mix well with water. Try milk instead.

• China, India and Pakistan are the world’s three largest producers of chil-ies.

• The Ancient Mayans rubbed chili pep-pers on their gums to cure toothaches.

• The first mass produced hot sauce in the U.S. was Edmund McIlhenny’s Tabasco Brand Pepper Sauce. First manufactured and marketed in Louisiana in 1868, the hot sauce continues today as a signature brand under its trademark name of Ta-basco. Legend has it that McIlhenny bot-tled his first sauces in recycled cologne bottles.

According to researchers at the Univer-sity of Texas in San Antonio, men who wear expensive clothes and drive “hot” cars attract more women who are inter-ested (supposedly) in short term relation-ships. The guy with the Lamborghini usually gets the girl, as opposed to the guy with a Ford Escape.

SNIPPETZ®: THE LOCAL SCOOP

As a member of the Tri-Lakes Chamber of Commerce, I enjoy meeting new people.

At a recent networking meeting, a fellow Chamber member told me she enjoyed my Tai Yi articles, but did not know what Tai Yi was or how it works. That was wonderful feed-back, as it told me there still needs to be clarification in the description of Tai Yi. Since different people come across my article at different times, some people may have read the ar-ticles describing Tai Yi. At the same time, some may have not read any prior articles and therefore have no background knowledge from which to draw when reading a newer ar-ticle.

Life Energy Flow Tai Yi is another name for Supreme Movement and Supreme Health. Tai Yi is an East-ern method of hands-on healing. It is similar to acupuncture and acu-pressure in its delivery method. Tai Yi does NOT use needles; it uses pressure points. Tai Yi is a very an-cient form of healing and it did die out for quite a while. The current Tai Yi teacher began learning Tai Yi from his teacher in the 1980s. The learning was quite intense and he began teaching his own students in the 1990s.

The teacher, Hossca Harrison, states some of the history in his Tai Yi His-tory article: “Documents discovered some years ago in the Mawangdui

LIFEENERGY

FLOW

TAI YI

tomb in China, which was sealed in 198 BCE, contain no reference to acupuncture as such, but does refer to a system of meridians very dif-ferent from the current use of me-ridians used in acupuncture. This is typical of Tai Yi.

Over time Tai Yi became localized and was used in the mountainous area of northwest China, west of the Min River, near the border of Tibet, in Szechuan by an ancient people called the Chiang Tribe.”

Tai Yi, when completed correctly, is the most powerful hands-on healing modality because it works with all aspects of the body. It works with all the meridians and can assist many different emotional, mental, and physical difficulties. There are over 4,000 treatments and Tai Yi students are required to attend class four weekends per year, every year, while that student/practitioner is working on the public. A practitio-ner cannot work on the public until he or she has been tested as profi-cient.

Tai Yi is a healing modality that works with the person to under-stand the origin of pain and heal it. When that occurs, the person works towards Supreme Health, which means no pain in any way. Pain is not normal. Tai Yi works with a person to understand and heal the pain. Some people enjoy one treat-ment to several treatments, depend-ing on the need. Tai Yi can assist a person in feeling calm, relaxed, and released. Tai Yi will bring up emotional issues that need to be ex-amined as well, which deepens the healing work. More information can be found at www.lifeenergyflowtai-yi.com and many people are enjoy-ing the excerpts from the upcoming book Walking With a Master. The excerpts are from Hossca’s experi-ences with his own teacher.

Mend the fenceEven the cheapest newfences cost thousands of dol-lars. Protect your investmentby looking for damage andmaking prompt repairs. Beforetouring your fence line, mowthe grass low so you'll havegood visibility. Watch for signsthat dogs have tunneled underthe fence. Training and awatchful eye are the bestways to prevent dogs fromdigging. Otherwise, attachinga 2-foot-wide apron of wire

mesh around the insideperimeter of the fence maywork. As you walk the fence, test the strength of the con-nections by gently tuggingposts and slats to ensurethey're well-attached. Checkfence posts for signs of rot(poke soft spots in the woodfor crumbling or decay).Remove and replace the dam-aged areas. Keep fencespainted or stained to protectthe wood. Repaint or stainwhen the original finish is thin, cracked or peeling. Beforepainting, hose off and scrubdirty boards, letting them drythoroughly.

Repel deerDeer can demolish hundredsor thousands of dollars oflandscaping in an evening ortwo. There are several thingsyou can do to keep deer awayfrom your investment: Installa mini fence or put bird nettingaround prized plants. Gardenstores have these materialsand can instruct you how touse them.Spray with a home-made deerrepellent. Search online gar-den forums for recipes forrepellents that blend eggs, hotsauce (or cayenne pepper),raw garlic, yogurt or buttermilkand dish soap. Spray everythree or four days and after arain. Or purchase one of thebetter commercial deer repel-lent sprays.

• On Aug. 4, 1892, Andrew and Abby Bor-den are found hacked to death in their Fall River, Mass., home. Daughter Lizzie, later immortalized in a famous rhyme, was ar-rested and charged with the double homi-cide. Taken with her Christian persona, the all-male jury acquitted her. Today, the house where the Borden murders occurred is a bed and breakfast.

• On Aug. 5, 1914, the world’s first electric traffic signal is put into place on the corner of Euclid Avenue and East 105th Street in Cleveland. It consisted of four pairs of red and green lights that served as stop-go in-dicators, each mounted on a corner post.

• On Aug. 6, 1928, Andy Warhol, one of the most influential artists of the latter part of the 20th century, is born in Pennsylva-nia. He took literally the advice of an art teacher who said he should paint the things he liked. He liked ordinary things, such as comic strips, canned soup and soft drinks, and so he painted them.

• On Aug. 2, 1939, Wes Craven, the man re-sponsible for terrorizing millions of movie-goers with his “Nightmare on Elm Street” series, is born in Cleveland. Craven began his directing career with 1972’s “The Last House on the Left,” a violent teen horror film.

• On Aug. 7, 1947, Kon-Tiki, a balsa wood raft captained by Norwegian anthropolo-gist Thor Heyerdahl, completes a 4,300-mile, 101-day journey from Peru to Raroia in the Tuamotu Archipelago, near Tahiti. Heyerdahl wanted to prove his theory that prehistoric South Americans could have colonized the Polynesian islands by drift-ing on ocean currents.

• On Aug. 3, 1958, the U.S. nuclear subma-rine Nautilus accomplishes the first under-sea voyage to the geographic North Pole. USS Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear sub-marine, dived at Point Barrow, Alaska, and traveled nearly 1,000 miles under the Arc-tic ice cap to reach the top of the world.

• On Aug. 1, 1966, Charles Whitman takes a stockpile of guns and ammunition to the observatory platform atop a 300-foot tower at the University of Texas and proceeds to shoot 46 people, killing 14 and wounding 31.

BRAINEXERCISESThere’s more to being connected

to the Internet than checking email and reading out-of-state

newspapers. With the right software, we can exercise our brains.

CogniFit Personal Coach is an online program geared to helping seniors im-prove memory, stay alert, multi-task and think faster. There’s nothing to download to your computer. The whole program is online, and you only need to sign up and log in. After an initial as-sessment, it keeps track of your prog-ress as you go step-by-step through more then 100 different levels.

Among the many areas it covers are auditory short-term memory, spatial perception, visual scanning, eye-hand coordination and response time.

Getting benefits from the program only

takes one hour a week, broken into three 20-minute sessions. If you don’t have a computer, your program can be done on a friend’s computer or even at the library, since your sign-on informa-tion is secure.

CogniFit won the 2009 International Council on Active Aging award for creative products aimed at seniors. The program costs $14.95 per month. Log on and see how it works at www.cog-nifit.com. If in doubt about the value of the training, click the Scientific Valida-tion tab and look through the studies.

If you’re uncertain about computer use, those who use computer for any amount of time are 44 percent less like-ly to have mild cognitive impairment. Add in exercise, and you can delay (or even prevent) mental decline.

Prefer to work with pencil and pa-per? Pick up a Graduate Record Exam (GRE) study guide at the bookstore. Each general test book has practice questions on a variety of topics such as math, vocabulary, reading comprehen-sion. Talk about brain stretchers!

STROKE, HEART ATTACK RISKS ARE SIMILAR

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I read all the time about the risks of having a heart at-tack. I never see anything said about the risks for having a stroke. What are they? I fear a stroke more than I do a heart at-tack. -- P.S.

ANSWER: The risks for both are simi-lar. They include uncontrolled high blood pressure, cigarette smoking, dia-betes, high cholesterol, too little exer-cise, a large waist, excessive alcohol consumption and a high ratio of Apo B to Apo A-1. This last item needs an ex-planation. Apo B is similar to LDL cho-lesterol -- the bad kind of cholesterol, the kind that clogs arteries. Apo A-1 is more like HDL cholesterol -- good cholesterol, the kind that keeps arteries clean. I have to admit that these tests are not usually ordered.

This subject is complicated by the fact that there are two different kinds of stroke. The more-common variety comes from obstruction of blood flow to a part of the brain from a plugged artery, like the plugged heart artery of a heart attack. The less-common variety comes from the breaking of a brain artery, something called a hemorrhagic stroke.

The two require different treatments and different approaches to prevention.

P.S. is like most people who live in greater fear of a stroke than a heart at-tack. The booklet on strokes explains the kinds of strokes and what can be done

to prevent and treat them. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 902W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Cana-da with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for de-livery.

***

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Recently I had what the hospital doctors called a panic attack. I would like to know what causes them and if there is a cure. Would lack of sleep or medication have anything to do with it? -- W.B.

ANSWER: A panic attack is a period of extreme fear in a situation that doesn’t warrant such fear. It comes on suddenly, reaches a peak in 10 or fewer minutes and makes the person want to flee from the situation he or she finds him- or her-self in -- shopping for groceries, driving a car or walking down a street.

During an attack, some of the following are present: the heart beats fast; sweat breaks out; people become short of breath; they can feel like they are chok-ing; they might have chest pain and be-lieve they’re having a heart attack; they could be dizzy.

The actual attack probably results from an outpouring of body chemicals, like adrenaline. What triggers the release of these chemicals usually is buried deep-ly in a person’s subconscious. Lack of sleep or medication could make a per-son more susceptible to an attack.

If you experience a panic attack only once, you don’t have a great concern. If the attacks recur, then you do have a problem that needs attention. Report them to your family doctor, who will get you started on treatment and refer you to a professional who can unearth hid-den causes provoking these attacks.

***Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to an-swer individual letters, but he will incorpo-rate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

ELIMINATEBELLY FAT OR BUMPY HIPSInterestingly, WHERE we carry

our weight is as important as carrying too much weight. A

pound of fat takes up the space of a grapefruit (and has the same ‘dimple’ appearance). A pound of muscle takes up the space of a tangerine.

During weight loss, it is important to track measurements as it is possible to lose ‘inches’ and fat before the scale shows a change. Losing weight that is not fat means you are shrinking, but not getting healthier!

BELLY FATExcess weight around the waist is the most serious. This increases the probability of heart disease and often indicates high visceral fat (fat around the organs). To lose this fat, a person must eat more often (every 3 hours) and balance blood sugar levels. Increasing good proteins (i.e., fish, chicken, turkey, eggs or quality protein shakes), good fats (i.e., flax oil, avocados, nuts, seeds, fish) and fresh veggies will also help. Eliminating the “WHITES” (i.e., white flour, white rice, white sugar) is key to reducing the insulin-resistance that causes this type of fat.

Ideally a woman’s waist should be 80% of her hips. A man’s waist should be equal to his hips. Example, if a woman’s hips are 40, her waist should be 32. If a man’s hips are 40,

his waist should be 40. A woman has better health when she has more of an ‘hour-glass’ figure.

BUMPY HIPSExcess weight in the hips often reflects an imbalance in the hormones and is more common with women. It can also indicate that the liver would benefit from some support.

The best support for the hormones includes increasing consumption of the good fats (Omega 3’s) and also GREENS! Eating a diet rich in green veggies, green salads, green drinks and less fried, fatty foods will support

the hormones and liver.

Regular exercise, even simple walking can help weight loss in both areas. However, making the dietary changes is also important. Laughter, relaxation and enjoying life also help the body ‘let go’ of the excess weight.

BEAUTIFUL BLACKBERRIESBlackberries are one of the great gifts of summer. The ber-

ries bloom from mid- to late June, and in most parts of the county, start ripening toward the middle of July. Ripe and

unripe blackberries frequently appear on the plants at the same time. The berries are small, green, hard and sour at first, becom-ing larger, juicier and sweeter as they ripen. Here are some great blackberry facts, tips and a recipe to help you with your summer berry picking and eating!

Blackberry Facts:• Select plump, firm and fully black berries. Unripe berries will not ripen once picked.• Do the math and be careful not to over-purchase, as blackberries quickly mold when left at room temperature and only last a few days in the refrigerator.• You easily can freeze berries that you can’t use right away -- just wash, cut the hulls off and spread the berries out on a baking pan. Place the berries in the freezer. When frozen, place them into a re-sealable bag, pressing out as much air as possible, and then freeze the berries.• The U.S. Department of Agriculture says 1 cup of blackberries has about 62 calories.• A cup of blackberries, not packed down, weighs almost one-third of a pound.• Blackberries were enjoyed by the ancient Greeks, who believed them to be a cure for diseases of the mouth and throat, as well as a preventative against many ailments, including gout.• The blackberry leaf also was used as an early hair dye, having been recommended by Nicholas Culpeper, the 17th-century Eng-lish herbalist, to be boiled in a lye solution in order to “maketh the hair black.”• Blackberry tea was said to be a cure for dysentery during the Civil War. During outbreaks of dysentery, temporary truces were declared to allow both Union and Confederate soldiers to “go blackberrying” to forage for blackberries to ward off the dis-ease.• Researchers have known for quite some time that berries con-tain antioxidants, which help to fight cancer-causing free radi-cals. A study at the University of Ohio has found that blackber-

ries are the most potent cancer fighting berries of them all, by nearly 40 percent!

This delicious Blackberry, Pecan and Goat Cheese Salad show-cases the sweetness of the berry while providing the crunch and smoothness of the pecans and goat cheese. It’s the perfect sum-mer salad!

In small bowl, whisk together the oil, vinegar, the remaining 1 tablespoon of honey, garlic, mustard, salt and the black and cayenne pepper. Set aside. 3. In salad bowl, toss together salad greens, blackberries and pe-cans. Add the avocado and goat cheese on top. Sprinkle with the lemon or lime juice. Pour on dressing and toss gently. PICKS OF THE WEEK“The Music Never Stopped” (PG) -- This is an uplifting family drama for people who really love their music. After being separated for 20 years, Henry Sawyer (J.K. Simmons) is reunited with his son Gabriel (Lou Taylor Pucci) under grim circumstances -- Gabriel has a brain tumor that has robbed him of his ability to form new memories. Determined to have a real conversation with his son, Henry finds a therapist who discovers that music can awaken something in Gabriel and give him a chance to have meaningful conversa-

tions again. Those who can connect to the music or the strained relationship will be taken on a dra-matic ride, piloted by an astounding perfor-mance by J.K. Simmons -- an actor who you have doubtlessly seen and heard in the past decade, but never knew his name or that he could handle a leading role so well.

“Stakeland” (R) -- One might take a brief look at this post-apocalyptic horror film and think it a forgettable clone of “I Am Legend,” but that would be dead wrong. “Stakeland” is the story of survivors and vamp-hunters in the wastelands of America after a vampire epidemic has left human society scattered and living in tiny, frightened rural clusters. The performances, atmosphere and suspense bring a nightmare vision to life without over-playing the violence and gore. Monster-fans who want to see vampires return to their vir-ulent, nonromantic blood-frenzied glory will flock to this movie like a swarm of nocturnal predators descending on a helpless village.

“Exporting Raymond” (PG) -- This goofy light-hearted documentary follows Phil Rosenthal, creator of TV’s “Everybody Loves Raymond,” as he travels to Moscow to aid in the production of Russia’s attempt to produce its own version, “Everybody Loves Kostya.” Dry humor is one of those things that’s highly culture-sensitive, as Rosenthal quickly finds out when the comedy he helped create is wildly and hilariously misinterpret-ed every step of the way. The comedy sparks flying away from the culture clash are fun-nier than most sitcom episodes.

CULT CORNER“MST3K Vs. Gamera: Mystery Science The-ater 3000, Vol. XXI” -- For the uninitiated, the MST3K series follows Joel (and later Mike) as he and his robot pals are forced to watch silly B-movies as an experiment for their evil boss. The result is an endearing TV show that gives the experience of watching wonderfully awful movies with a couch full of quick-witted friends.

This particular box set contains every epi-sode in which they critique movies from the Gamera series -- a Japanese contemporary to the much more popular Godzilla. This set is good for anyone looking to fill out their collection or jump into the MST3K series; a Japanese movie giant flying turtle monster is always good for a laugh.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A misun-derstanding tests the temperament of the sometimes headstrong Aries. Instead of blowing your top, take time for a pleasant diversion while things cool down.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A work-place problem could make the divine Bo-vine see red. But talk it out before you con-sider walking out. Some surprising facts emerge that change your earlier focus.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You face a choice between ignoring your uneasy feel-ings about your relationship with that spe-cial person and demanding explanations. A close friend offers wise counsel.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A change you’d been hoping for carries an unex-pected complication. Stay the course, and things will work themselves out. Be sure to make time for family and friends.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) Aspects favor spending time with loved ones. On the job, new ideas are generally welcomed. But some demands for changes could cause problems. Be ready to defend your choic-es.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Good news: That workplace problem is close to being resolved with results that should please everyone. Take time off to indulge your love of fun and games.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Most of the time you are the most unflap-pable person around. But be ready to be thrown off-balance in the nicest way when Cupid takes aim in your direction.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) It’s not often when someone tries to “sting” the sharp-witted Scorpion. But it can hap-pen. Continue to be skeptical about any-thing that seems too good to be true.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to Decem-ber 21) Your strong sense of self-esteem helps you serve as a role model for some-one who needs personal reassurances. Your efforts pay off in an unexpected way.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Someone close considers revealing a painful secret. Withhold judgment. Instead, open your generous heart, and offer dollops of your love and understanding.

LIFELONG LEARNING

WEEK “Curiosity never retires!” Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper has proclaimed the week of August 1 thru August 6 as “Lifelong Learning Week” in Colorado.

In response, the many Colorado Springs organizations which have lifelong learning as part of their purpose have joined together during the week to offer first-hand, lifelong learning classes and trips, free or at minimal cost, at various locations within the community to showcase what is available for the adult curious mind.

More than 4,000 people over age

50 partake in educational classes each year. The PILLAR Institute for Lifelong Learning, The Senior Center, UCCS, Pikes Peak Library, Theatre Works, and The Fine Arts Center, all of which are non-profits, have free or minimal cost activities and classes where the curious mind can stretch and enjoy interaction and dialogue with others and with the professionals who are presenting. PILLAR alone regularly offers an average of 2 classes daily covering a wide-range of topics from the current Middle East situation to the Story Behind Mickey Mouse, taught by retired college professors and other professionals in their fields. The PILLAR “Lifelong Learning Week” activities are available free of charge simply by pre-registering.

For a full schedule of classes, events, and locations for all of the participants go to (PILLAR.org) and click on “Calendar” on the lower left – if you would like to attend a class or activity each organization requests that you pre-register.

SNIPPETZ® WEEKLY MAGAZINE

IT IS…By Nicholas James Yanez

…that time of year again, where we all get the inkling to bowl; National Bowling Week. And I know exactly what you’re thinking – this is the greatest week of the summer, I think I’ll celebrate by gathering at the zoo, commandeering ten penguins and approaching a keeper with a trade proposition; ten penguins for one bowling ball. Well, it’s not the best idea you’ve ever had. With the pending trial, sad penguins, and questionable trade proposition, the plan is probably not worth the extraordinary effort. I offer you, instead, an alternative. Go to Pinz Bowling Center, as it celebrates the week in style!

Beginning Monday from 3-5pm, potential bowlers can go to www.gobowling.com to print off a FREE Bowling coupon to be valid on Saturday, August 6th (National Bowling Day), as centers across America and their patrons attempt to set the world record for most games bowled in a day. We’ll get to that in a minute.

Mid-week, the fun begins. Citizens of the Tri-lakes area, as well as those native further north or south can take advantage of the week by receiving free bowling lessons at Pinz Tuesday-Thursday from 4-6pm! Tours of the facility will also be given for free, during the same time frames. It will give the average human a chance to learn more about the unique sport of bowling, in the forefront as well as behind the scenes. Beyond that, Pinz will be offering bowling trivia throughout the week to test your knowledge of bowling. Prizes will be given for those who partake.

Then, it culminates. The time comes to throw down the gloves and make a difference in the world. The difference being you as a participant in a world record setting performance! Pinz, along with hundreds of Bowling Alleys across America will attempt to break last year’s record of the ‘Most Games Bowled in One Day’. To receive a free game, print the aforementioned coupon. People who partake will also receive a certificate acknowledging their involvement in the feat. It is a moment of glory. It is a rare opportunity. It is also pretty-freakin’-cool, so don’t miss out.

FINANCIAL FOCUS

LIKE THE WEATHER, HOT

INVESTMENT CAN COOL OFF

Provided by Adam Graysonof EdwardJones Investments

We’re in the “Dog Days” of summer – traditionally the hottest, steamiest time

of year. But in a few weeks, the temperatures will begin to cool down. Nature isn’t alone in this heating-and-cooling pattern — you can also find evidence of it in the investment world. To be specific, today’s “hot” investments can lose their sizzle quickly — which means that, as an investor, you’ll need to take steps to avoid being left out in the cold.

An investment can become “hot” — that is, its price can shoot up — for any of a number of reasons. For example, a company that provides a well-known product or service may decide to “go public” by making its shares available to investors; when this happens, the stocks become “hot” for a while. An investment may also become hot if a favorable event occurs, as might be the case with a drug company that gains permission to sell a medicine that’s much in demand. And some investments heat up because an “expert” is touting them in the media.

But although different investments may get hot for different reasons, they all share one thing in common: They will cool off. In fact, by the time you and many other investors hear about a hot stock, it may already be cooling off. If you buy into an investment that’s been hot for a while, you should recognize that its “upside potential” may not be what you think.

To help achieve your financial goals, you may be better off by not chasing after hot stocks. Instead, consider these ideas:

Increase share ownership. One key to building wealth is to increase the amount of shares you own in your investments. Hot stocks are often expensive stocks, so you may be limited in the number of shares you can purchase. As an alternative, look for quality investments that are trading at reasonable prices. You might also consider buying additional shares in quality companies you already own.

Buy appropriate investments. Even if you can afford to buy some shares in hot stocks, should you? These stocks may not be suitable for your needs, for any number of reasons: too risky for your risk tolerance, too similar to other stocks you already own, and so on. You need to own investments that are appropriate for your individual needs. Of course, you also need to keep in mind that any investment in stocks — whether hot or not — will fluctuate with changes in market conditions and may be worth more or less than your original investment when you sell.

Diversify your holdings. By continually pursuing hot investments, you might end up with an unbalanced, non-diversified portfolio. By diversifying your holdings, you can help reduce the impact of volatility on your portfolio. However, diversification, by itself, cannot guarantee a profit or protect against loss.

Think long term. Chasing hot stocks is strictly a short-term move. Successful investors adhere to long-term strategies that require discipline, patience and a constant focus on the future.

By following these suggestions, you’re unlikely to experience the “thrill” of chasing after hot investments — but you will get the satisfaction of building a portfolio designed to help meet your important investment goals.

LAST MINUTEVACATIONS

If you didn’t plan for a vacation this summer but are determined to get a break, it’s still possible even at this late date. In fact, the approaching end

of summer might work in your favor as owners try to fill last-minute vacancies.

Look for vacation rentals that are within a few hours drive of home. You’ll save precious vacation time by not battling crowds and security at airports and wast-ing time in the air, not to mention saving money on airfare and transportation. Vacation rentals generally will accommodate your whole family and allow you to save money by cooking your own meals. Many provide laundry facilities.

While you might think you want a place with activi-ties suited to your interests, consider taking this op-portunity to try something new. If you’re into golf, go for a lakeside cabin that comes with fishing poles and a canoe. If you like water skiing, opt for a condo in an historic city for a change of pace.

Go online to www.vacationhomerentals.com and click on your state. You’ll find rentals categorized by county and town, with lots of photos and descriptions.

If a property sounds interesting, check the availabil-ity. For verification or to ask if there have been can-cellations, contact the owner using the online form. Ask if any end-of-season deals are available. Don’t miss the Last Minute Deals link at the top of the main page.

Check www.vacationrentals.com, and again click on your state. You’ll be able to narrow your choices by date, reviews and whether the rental has a pool or al-lows pets. You can select multiple rentals to compare. Check the activities on each listing for local attrac-tions. This site provides the owner’s name and tele-phone number, as well as an online contact form.

If you want a lot of amenities, consider a timeshare rental. With timeshares, owners “own” a certain week

or weeks each year when they have use of the accom-modations. They can’t always use those weeks and will rent out the property. Timeshares generally have a full menu of amenities, and many are luxurious re-sorts. Search online for timeshares in your state. Call the timeshare office directly, as it’s likely to have a list of rentals.

As always, ask whether any discounts are available.
