TEXTING AND DRIVINGAN EPIDEMIC
From SRO WrightTexting and driving has become an epidemic and growing trend in today’s society. Most drivers think they have the ability to drive, text, check email, update facebook all while driving a 2,000 pound lethal weapon. In most states, including Kansas, it is against the law to write, send, or read a written communication. Texting is about 6 times more likely to cause an accident as intoxicated drivers.
The average minimal amount of time that it takes to send or read a text and drive is 5 seconds. If you are driving 55 mph, you will cover the length of a football field. Most would reply that they were glancing up while typing or reading the text, but really, what are you actually thinking about and seeing during that time.
I can give you all kinds of statistics such as it is 23 times more likely that you will be involved in an accident when you are texting. It is a personal choice to text, check your email, or update your facebook but next time I challenge you to first answer the question, “is this message important enough to lose my life or take the life of an innocent person”.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWS
In October, Officer Wright talked with each elementary class on cross walk safety as well as walking and biking safely to and from school. In the last year, one Douglass student crossing the street was struck by a car and there have been a few near misses.
Officer Wright discussed with the students some ways to cross the street safely at a crosswalk as well as streets where there is not a cross walk. We covered making eye contact with drivers before crossing, looking both directions twice, using cross walks when available and some bicycle safety items.
Safety
Attendance Matters
If you have visited an elementary school in the area recently, you have likely seen information regarding daily attendance goals. Maybe you have even heard the new public announcement commercials on the radio, which promote attendance in school. Many schools have seen a decrease in the number of students who are regularly attending school at the elementary level. In fact, some of our youngest students miss 10% of the school year – about 18 days a year.
Why does regular attendance at school matter? According to data from a California study, chronic absenteeism in kindergarten, and even prek, can predict lower test scores, continued poor attendance, and retention in later grades. The study found that children who were chronically absent in kindergarten and first grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade. In the California study, only 17% of students who missed 18 or more days of school during their kindergarten and first grade years could read on grade level at the end of third grade.
How is our school working to improve attendance? Seal Elementary has established a new goal to place a greater focus on school attendance. We will be recognizing and rewarding students with perfect or outstanding attendance each quarter. During second quarter we will begin displaying our daily attendance to build increased awareness. Information on our attendance guidelines has been shared with parents, and notes to excuse students for necessary appointments are now being required. The school office will continue to share information about our attendance policies to keep parents informed. We appreciate our parents’ partnership as we work on our goal to have excellent attendance at Seal Elementary!

We’ve gotten off to a great start and are ‘digging in’ to the school year! If you’ve seen the shirts the PTO bought for all the students and staff this fall, that statement will make sense!
I want to start off by saying a BIG BIG thank you to all who participated in our Fall Fundraiser! It was very exciting to have such positive participation and we can definitely call it a success! All in all we will clear a bit over $10,000 for our PTO! That’s more than we’ve raised the last few years with our typical sales fundraiser, and if you were at the Bulldog Dash event on October 1, I think you’d agree it was A LOT more FUN! It’s a great accomplishment for our small community and I hope all who attended left with smiles on their faces and enjoyed time with their friends and neighbors. In addition to the Fun Run and Fun Night, the kids who participated also got some other prizes, two lucky classes got an Ice Cream Party and extra recess (Dierks and Landis for raising the most $ per kid) and over 100 kids went to the Wichita Aviate Sports Forum and enjoyed a pizza party to boot! We’ve heard lots of positive comments and suggestions to make it even better next year. So… parents of Seal students, please keep the momentum going and get involved to put on another great FUNdraiser next year! Several of our PTO officers (including me) will be moving on to the middle school with our kids next year, so we need active parents to be thinking about stepping up to take the wheel!
In addition to the regular things we sponsor, we are now looking for great ways to put our fundraiser success to work at our school, so if any of you have ideas of needed items and improvements, please let us know!
Meanwhile, we are planning to approve the purchase of new technology equipment for some classrooms, sponsor some field trips for the kids, and find some STEM related classes to bring to the kids and enrich those key core classes.
The list of things the PTO does and sponsors each year is long, too long to list in this newsletter, but if you are interested in more information, I encourage you to attend a monthly meeting held on the first Monday of each month at 6:00pm in the Elementary Library or contact a PTO officer. You can also check out our Facebook page at Leonard Seal PTO.
Finally, Dad’s don’t miss the Donuts with Dad event scheduled for Wednesday, November 9! Hope to see you all there!
Check out a snapshot from our Bulldog Dash Run! They will make you smile!Have a great month! - Becky Mitchell – PTO President

Driver Responsibilities And Motor Vehicle Accidents
During the first nine weeks of the current school year, there has been three motor vehicle accidents in the parking lot of Douglass High School where a vehicle struck another vehicle and left. Officer Wright has put together some guidelines to follow when you are involved in a motor vehicle accident either here at school or on the roadway.
Per State Statute 8-1604 and 8-1605 it is the duty of the driver of any vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury, death, or damage to any attended vehicle or property shall give the following information:
-driver’s name, address and the registration number of the vehicle such driver is driving-driver’s license or permit to drive-name of company with which there is in effect a policy of motor vehicle liability insurance covering the vehicle involved in the accident and the policy number-and shall give such information upon request to any police officer at the scene of the accident
Student Council Regional Conference
In September, members of STUCO attended the STUCO regional conference at Derby High School. At the conference our speaker taught us different ways to get things accomplished. The motto for the this event was “A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.” All in all, it was a fun day, and everyone came home with new ideas about different activities STUCO could put on.
Douglass Fall Homecoming
For homecoming, STUCO helped put on different games and activities throughout the week. Every single day there was a different dress up theme. This was part of a class competition. On Wednesday night, students from all grades participated in He-man Volleyball and Powder Puff Football. The winners for He-man Volleyball were the Senior boys and the winners of Powder Puff Football were the Junior girls. On Thursday, there was an academic spirit day. The morning was filled with a trivia game and Battle of the Air Bands. Each class had groups lip sing to different songs. The teachers even went along and dressed up as different celebrities to be our presenters. That afternoon high school and middle school students walked to the elementary for a district-wide pep rally. All fall sports participants and the Homecoming candidates were introduced, and the DHS cheerleaders led the crowd in several cheers. To end the day, high school students participated in games on the football field with the Senior class winning the week-long class competition and being rewarded with ice cream sandwiches.
On Friday night the homecoming candidates were introduced:DaShon Arnold and Shayna BergleyLogan Bannon and Starla GoodmanHunter Chadic and Emily ValentinePeyton Henke and Madison Woody Gabe Wasson and Allison Zalusky
The 2015 Fall Homecoming King and Queen, Michael Cochran and Cashlyn Munroe along with Kindergarten attendants Bearick Dixon and Kynleigh Edris assisted with the crowning of this year’s royalty. Logan Bannon was crowned King and Madison Woody was crowned Queen. After winning the football game against Belle Plaine, the homecoming dance was held in the commons which was decorated in a Halloween theme. It was a busy and fun week at DHS, and the students are looking forward to more fun during Winter Homecoming in February.

SADD Club Promotes Red Ribbon Week with Activities
Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, tobacco, and other drug and violence prevention awareness campaign observed annually in October in the United States. Each year, SADD Club plans different activities to recognize the importance of Red Ribbon Week.
This year DHS students participated in a “White-Out Day.” Throughout the day, students painted their faces white to represent people who have lost their lives in drunk driving accidents. If a student had white face paint, they could not speak for the rest of the day. Smartie candies were handed out at the elementary with the slogan “Be a Smartie! Don’t do drugs!” While the middle school received Dum-Dum Suckers with a reminder “Don’t be a Dum-Dum! Say no to drugs!”
During lunch time, high school students attempted to drive a golf cart through an obstacle course while wearing “drunk” goggles.
KAY Club Sponsors Annual Food and Toy Drive
November 28th- December 9th
KAY Club is once again sponsoring the Annual Food and Toy Drive at the High School! All items collected will be distributed to people in the Douglass community. Food donations need to be non-perishable items. We are needing new toys for all ages of children from elementary to high school. Prizes and incentives will be given to classes with the most donations!
Additional donations can be dropped off at the high school office! Thank you for your support of our community!
DHS Seniors H.E.A.R. Anti-Bullying Presentation
H.E.A.R. (Helping Everyone Achive Respect) is a presentation developed specifically for high school students by subject matter experts at Harvard Graduate School of Education and University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The purpose of H.E.A.R. is to promote respect in schools while creating bully-free environments. Students are provided practical, research-based information and encouraged to engage with learning through guided discussion. More specifically, the workshop gives students the opportunity to:
Discuss character traits, such as loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage. Contrast these values to bullying by exploring what bullying looks like, why people bully, and the negative, often long-lasting consequences of bullying to bullies, victims, bystanders and community members. Reflect on real-life bullying situations through case studies. Identify strategies for reacting safely and effectively. Examine ways to become a leader in the movement by changing expectations and strengthening the school community.
Students, educators, parents and guardians are also invited to take advantage of online resources found
