2018-2019 ANNUAL REPORT

TRANSFORMING LIVES, ONE CHILD AT A TIME
Every year I choose a word that describes the theme of the year for myfamily. Some words have been perserverance, faith or adventure. Inreflecting over the year for Circle of Friends, theword that resinates is JOY.One definition of joy is gladness not based on circumstance. Though ouryouth and mentors have experienced struggle: illness, loss of housing, divorce, cancer, peer & academic difficulties and loss of loved ones...JOYremains.Ourmentors have steadfastly servedwith JOY. Theymodel whatit is to be committed and passionate about the children they serve. Theymodel how to do hard things and still have JOY.It is a privilege to know and work along side such inspiring mentors andwatch as our youth becomemore resilient. Thank you to ourmentors andsupporters that steadfastly serve and support Circle of Friends and ouryouth with JOY!
Warmly,

THANK YOU TO OURDEDICATEDMENTORS

WHAT ARE ADVERSE CHILD EXPERIENCES?An ACE score is a tally ofdifferent types of experencesthat hallmark a rough childhood.According to the ACE study, therougher your childhood, thehigher your score. Studies havelinked a greater number of ACEswith greater risk of heart disease, cancer, bone fracture, chroniclung and liver disease, diabetesand stroke. Those with scoreshigher than 4 have increasedrates of mental illness. ACE scoreis not destiny, it does not tallythe positive experiences thathelp build resilience and protectthem from the impacts oftrauma. Research suggests thatjust one caring, safe relationshipin life gives a child a much betterpossibility of growing uphealthy. Circle of Friends iscommitted to providing caringand safe relationships for ouryouth so they can thrive throughadversity.

I want them at the table:Kellie , our Youth Program Coordinator , instantly fell in love with the "Jones"boys while observing them at Sisters Elementary School . I quickly followedsuit when they attended their first cooking class at the Clubhouse . The threebrothers were full of young boy energy and eager to be a part of their new"circle of friends" . Mom and Ihad coffee this week and Iinstantly saw strength in hertired and tearful eyes . Shedoesn't share her story often ,so it was a privilege to besitting with her that day .
Her life and her boys lives have been scattered with stress , uncertainty andACEs . She has overcome much , has lost much , yet she expressed joy thatthrough the hardships , she is now in a place to be more present with her boys .Her eyes lit up as she shared about her boys interests and dreams . They wantto be rockstars and toy makers . They love music , art , sports and nerf gun wars .I asked her what dream she had for herself . She paused for a long while andthen said , "I want them at the table , good healthy men , coming home andsitting with me at the table" . She continued to say she wants opportunitiesfor them that she cannot provide . She does not want her mistakes andcircumstances to negatively impact them . She is reaching out to Circle ofFriends to help her lessen the impact of ACEs for her sons .
This is where we need you . . . the boys are eagerly waitingMENTORS! Theyare waiting for YOU to step into their lives and help them become moreresilient . If you are ready for a nerf gun war and to fall in love with one ofthese sweet boys , please call us today to start the process of becoming aMENTOR!
