LOCAL NEWS: NEW YEAR, NEW COVERS, NEW EDITION ! This year there a number of new advertisers most of whom are for local businesses: mower servicing, plumber, electrician, kitchen design and installation, home cleaning and general maintenance, all of whom have already worked for satisfied customers in our community. We are grateful to the many long term advertisers who have continued their much valued support.

LOCAL NEWS: DAWN MAY SAYS THANKS! A card has been received from Dawn May with much appreciation for our gift of the Post Office Gift Voucher for her time as Local News Editor. Dawn plans to buy fruit trees that she says each year will remind her of her time with our community and the many friends she made. What a lovely idea and thought. Thank you Dawn.

Village Halls Week is a high-profile campaign supported by Defra and, following that week, we held an open day on Saturday 25th January from 10am to 4pm. This is just one of the ways we encourage people to hire BHVH.

Even though Village Halls Week is over, please encourage anyone you know to come and view our beautiful hall, we’ll be delighted to show them around. From local businesses who might want to hire BHVH for meetings and conferences, to people looking for a modern, cost effective venue for a party or wedding, they’re all welcome. BROAD HINTON KIDS CLUB

We are a friendly group of mums and dads who get together at Broad Hinton Village Hall on the 1st Friday of the month from 9am to 11am. There are plenty

of activities for children aged 0-5, as well as a healthy snack.

Parents and carers come and enjoy a coffee and the chance to catch up. £2.50 per family.

Any questions/queries please call Rachel on 07818 402 474.

We also have a Facebook Broad Hinton Kids’ Club.

The Ridgeway Ladies

On Wednesday 8th January the ladies met for their first meeting of 2020. The

meeting began with the Chairperson (Marilyn) giving a resume of the 2019

programme. What a varied programme it was ...from ballet to bee

keeping...and the members all agreed it was an excellent, varied and most

enjoyable year. In the absence of the treasurer Glynis ran through the financial

report and the committee was re-elected (unfortunately Elaine resigned from

the committee and Joy was welcomed as a new committee member). Once the

formalities of the AGM were completed it was quiz time!

Marilyn had prepared a wonderful picture quiz.....from places to sports

persons, actors to famous people. It was a chance to get the little grey cells

activated and to chat to each other. On the whole we did quite well but the

sports personalities proved a little challenging for many of us!

An enjoyable evening was had by all. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 5th

February at 7.45pm in the village hall when our speaker will be Ros Burden (an

acupuncturist). Ladies why not come and join us? We have another year of

interesting and varied speakers - a year’s subscription is only £20 or to come

along for a single meeting is £3.

just under £4000 made up from the following:

Cards, diaries, merchandise, monetary donations, WAA Winter Raffle (main winner Ted Pomeroy from

Trowbridge, other winners can be found on the WAA website) and The Big Give. A huge Thank You to

ALL of the local businesses and their staff who sold on our behalf:

R.A. Jephson, and St John’s Pharmacies in Wroughton. Crumps Coffee Shop, J. Rouse and Son in Royal

Wootton Bassett, Kennet Pharmacy in Marlborough, The Winterbourne and The Crown Inn. The

Ellendune Community Centre in Wroughton for letting me share Friday mornings during Market Day

time and Village Hall Coffee Mornings and anywhere else that I might have popped up!!

Recycle 4 WAA

Broad Hinton Primary School are collecting empty crisp packets/multi—packet/family packs, outer

wrappings and Tassimo pods as part of their being kinder to our world and making some money to

support a very worth while charity in WAA.

These are dropped off at local collection points recycled and monies help to support WAA. The Head,

Mrs Floyd will be doing a drop off over half-term, please leave in School porch last week of term,

beginning 10.2.2020 or deliver to me at 9 The Croft, Broad Hinton. Ring JW 731476 for more info.

Our Heli and The Team celebrate 30 years of saving lives this year. WAA operate up to 19 hours a day

365 days a year, and reach anywhere in Wiltshire in 11 minutes. To keep her flying we need to raise

£3.75 million a year, that’s approximately £10,000 a day. They are not funded directly by the

government and receive no national lottery grants. WAA are called out to on average three life saving

missions a day in the Heli or rapid response vehicles to all kinds of emergencies from road traffic

accident, child related emergencies to horse riding and cycling accidents as well as to other medical

emergencies.

They attend incidents like this across Wiltshire and neighbouring counties when needed. 2019 was

their busiest year so far, thanks to all the generosity of people, community groups, schools, businesses

and grant making trusts who make donations and fundraise to keep WAA flying and providing its life

saving service.

information if you’d like to do more.

Broad Hinton Coffee Morning

Coffee Morning is held every Tuesday morning between 10.00 and 12.00 in our lovely Village Hall. Everyone is welcome and we get visits from passing travellers too. The coffee is fresh and delicious and we serve caffeinated and decaff. There is a variety of teas available as well as hot chocolate and all it costs is £1.00 per cup or £2.00 per mug.

A drink is too wet to be drunk on its own so there is always a wonderful selection of yummy cakes or you may prefer a toasted crumpet or muffin and these come free with the coffee! What better value could you find anywhere?

Come along and join in the repartee with friends, neighbours and visitors to our lovely village. Catch up with all the latest details of forthcoming events as well. We look forward to seeing you.

VIEW FROM THE RECTORY

‘For the strength of the pack is the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is

the pack.’ Rudyard Kipling

On a blustery Saturday in January we had the incredible ex-

perience of encountering Wolf-dogs. These extraordinary

creatures are gentle giants, 75% wolf, living with humans in

a tightly co-ordinated pack. I was entrusted with the small-

est female (larger than most GDS or Retrievers), very strong

and very loving. I marvelled at her ability to be fully present

with us, eager to join in the wandering of the much larger

pack of Wassailers, unfazed by anything except the physical

distance between her and the other two Wolf-dogs and their

human pack-mates. I began to ponder what we could learn

from them as we enter the month of Love - February.

Firstly they are fiercely loyal to their pack; they are the ultimate team players. Wolves will do

anything to protect their family, even if it means sacrificing themselves. They work together

to achieve a common goal that benefits the whole pack. They make the most of the resources

they have available and accept the situation they are in. Humans can also live in tough envi-

ronments but (in some cases) we don’t half moan about it - we could count blessings more!

The strict hierarchy in a wolf pack means that youngsters have a great respect for their elders.

I wonder who we need to have more respect for, regardless of age?

Wolves only take what they need. Humans tend to take far more than they need, which means

we are gradually ruining our planet. If we were as resourceful as wolves the world would be a

much better place and this is something we need to take to heart deeply and take action on

now.

Wolves could also teach us a great deal about true love, being more loyal to their families than

most humans, and relationships between siblings are just as strong as between cubs and par-

ents. In the wild it really is ‘until death us do part’, as they mate only once, for life. If you see

a lone wolf in the wild the chances are it is deeply grieving or a lonely youngster seeking a

soul mate.

An integral ingredient in showing love is communication and much of what happens between

wolves is non-verbal; it seems effortless to our human eyes but is actually underpinned by

their ability to show deep affection. Life can be intense and we forget to show those closest to

us affection: we could do a lot worse this February in the so-called month of Love than to

take time out to do just this! At one stage the wolf-dog went under my clergy cloak and snug-

gled against me, her entire weight on my leg. It felt wonderful to be so trusted and reminded

me of the promise that one day wolf, lion, lamb would live together in peace and a child

would lead them. Perhaps the wolf might give us some ideas to help us live differently this

February - St Francis certainly found it was so!

“A brief respite from everyday pressures –

a time of peace, calm and silent reflection.”

MEDITATION (TAIZÉ) Service

Every fortnight on a Wednesday evening at East Kennett Church from 7.00 to 7.25pm: a chance to just sit quietly and relax and enjoy the silence and the

peace by candlelight, with a background of occasional singing and some words of wisdom.

Future dates for your diary:

Wednesday 5th February, Wednesday 19th February,

Under The Beech Tree

A Space to Breathe

takes a BREATHER!

The ground at the Rectory is waterlogged and the weather has been atrocious. After speaking to those who have faithfully attended throughout the winter we shall take a break from the great outdoors and gather again in the spring. Watch this space for further details or do let me know if you would like to be emailed in advance to decide dates and times for the new sessions. Please email [email protected] or leave a message on 01672 539643.

Tuesday FEBRUARY 4th - 'Those who sing pray twice.' Come and share your favourite hymn, discover your own 'voice' (crows welcome!) and dig a bit deeper into how music can add to our experience of God. Tuesday MARCH 10th - 'Don't give something up - Give something OUT.' Explore how we might live Lent differently - no giving up of chocolate or wine - an alternative look at Lent.
