Primary News Mrs Frost (Assistant Principal) We have once again had an exciting and busy start to the term. From all reports a lot of fun was had at the athletics carnival on Monday and it has been great to hear about all the students who tried hard and achieved their personal best. Still on the sporting field, don't forget to come along and support the students in the cross country next Monday. The Year 3-6 students have had the opportunity to once again participate in two writer's workshops this term. I have been blown away with the descriptive and emotive language the students have developed and been able to include in their narrative and persuasive pieces. If you would like to look at some of the finished pieces check out the 5/6 article today and also look on our facebook page. In addition to this it has been exciting to hear the students talk about how much they are looking forward to the next workshop. As teachers in the primary department we have all been busy this year building up our skills. Over the coming weeks we will again attend a VCOP professional learning day. If you are interested in what that means, ask your child to explain what each of the letters stand for. I am looking forward to learning more and putting in place more strategies to improve our teaching of writing across the school. Wishing you all a successful next fortnight,

Year Five/Six Mrs Frost (Class Teacher) Year 5/6 have been working hard on their Persuasive Writing. Junk food is bad by Hannah It is an undisputed fact that junk food should be banned from school. It should be banned because it makes litter, without it you stay fit and healthy, and it is bad for you. This is not an easy topic but we should defiantly ban junk food because it has so much packaging. Junk food has a lot of packaging because everything in it is in its own little bag. For example an apple has no rubbish but a cupcake has a paper case and gladwrap, see the difference. So eat things with little or no rubbish. Another point is you stay fit and healthy by not eating junk food. You will not stay fit and healthy because junk food has lots of unnatural sugars and fats which

take forever to burn. Did you know if you are overweight or obese (which is the opposite of fit and healthy) don’t have more fat cells but more fat in each cell. So stay fit and healthy and you’ll feel great. My final reason is junk food is very bad for you. Junk food is super bad for you because it is just unnatural sugar and other things so it tastes really nice. Guess what an apple give off the same amount of energy as a chocolate bar but the energy just burns slower so eat an apple instead. I therefore believe that we should ban junk food at school because it leaves litter, without it you stay fit and healthy, and junk food is very bad for you. So if you are hungry at school eat something nice and healthy. We Should Definitely Ban Junk-Food at School by Jayla. In my opinion I think that we should definitely ban junk food at school. My reasons why are because rubbish can get left around, you can get too crazy and you can get diabetes. Everyone tends to think that we shouldn’t ban junk food but I think that we must because too much rubbish gets left around the school. When you eat junk food everything is in packaging but if you don’t eat junk food you won’t leave any rubbish around. What I mean is when you eat your fruit and other healthy stuff it will be in a container. Another reason why we should ban junk food is because you can get very crazy and it can lead up to bad things. Junk food contains sugar and preservatives and they aren’t good for your health. When you go crazy you can start to show off then you can start an argument with the teacher because they told you off. That is why you don’t need that much sugar. My main reason why we should ban junk food is because you can get diabetes. If we don’t ban junk food this is the illness that you will get. When you get diabetes you have to take special tablets and will have to go to the doctors more than what you used to. That is what will happen if you don’t stop eating too much junk food. They are my reasons why we should definitely ban junk food from school.

Junk Food Should Be Banned by Mahayla I believe that junk food should be banned from school because it makes kids sick. It also makes you get hyperactive and your teeth can fall out. Firstly junk food has lots of sugar in it. I know your teeth will definitely fall out. Those are some of my reasons why you must ban junk food from school. Secondly junk food is not healthy for your body. I know junk food makes you sick. This is another paragraph full of my reasons why you should ban junk food from school. Finally my point is junk food will make you hyperactive. I certainly know junk food will change your behaviour. They are my final reasons why junk food should be banned from school. This is why junk food should be banned from school. Definitely! The Extremely Scary Night by Jordan N Here I was terrified underneath a pile of leaves in the forest, wolves howling in the distance. I was shivering, lips blue and not much warmth under the leaves. “I better get some sleep it’s twelve o’clock.” I stretched, looking at my digital watch. I’m not quite sure who I am or how I got here. My last memory was arguing with my parents and them pushing me out of the car, hitting my head extremely hard on a rock. I was unconscious for several hours. Now here I am with concussion. Seven o’clock in the morning scavenging for anything that’s meat. My concussion it is incredibly painful and it has been hours so I am staving and hungry. Whilst I was scavenging I saw a komodo dragon. The first thing I did was drop to the floor and made a big THUMP!!! The Komodo dragon immediately looked my way. It sniffed the air; it was running towards me in a squiggly line. It stopped dramatically, it looked to the left, it looked to the right then it ran back as fast as it could. “Hmmph that was unexpected,” I said. I was walking away and then a bald eagle was swooping me so I was sprinting as fast as I could. The eagle saw a little rodent and it went off chasing it so I was safe and then I realised I was still …. I was now far in the forest all of a sudden a cyber bear came out with a rocket launcher he aims it at me and fires at a squirell. I started to laugh. “ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.” It pointed it’s laser eye at me. It fired for moment I saw black then I realised.

12:00 O’Clock at Night by Brayden Crack there goes the lightning and rain as the water hits the leaves. One night I was on a plane with other people and CRASH. We crashed in the middle of the jungle. My name is James, I am eleven years old and I am the only one that survived. I am alone and in the middle of nowhere. Whoops I nearly stepped in a rabbit trap. That makes me think there’s a little house somewhere. I know it. Now the rain starts to pick up and now there is thunder and lightning. No food around and no shelter, I am going to die out here if I don’t find food. Oh no, someone is coming. I better jump up the tree to be safe, so they can’t eat me. I’m hiding really well. No one can find me up here. Next it was a rescue person, yes I’m safe. Football is Amazing by Montana Have you played football? Well you should definitely try football because football is always exciting and energetic, especially with friends. You absolutely need to try football because it undoubtedly is a fun sport. In football you can have amazing fun. You will earn about football and then you can play. This is my first reason by you should try football. It is certain that football exercises people to make you fit. When playing football you get a lot of exercise from running around. When you play football it builds up your strength and health. That is another reason why you should play football. It is obvious you can play with friends in football. You can also make more friends and be a lot more happier when playing football. When you play with friends then you have a lot more fun. That is my third reason. Finally you should really have a go at football.

Secondary News Head Teacher Jean Duma (Head Teacher) Welcome back to Term 2. Already we have had a busy start to the Term with our Athletics carnival held this week and Cross Country this coming Monday. Results from the Athletics Carnival are still be finalised with the Senior High Jump to be conducted next week. We will begin this year's Premiers Sporting Challenge in Week 4, a note with more information will be sent home next week. Students in Years 7-10 will be completing their Half Yearly exams in Week 5, so please make sure you see your teachers if you are unsure of any content before Week 5.

English Christine Connellan (English Teacher) Year 7 students have recently explored the autobiography of Roald Dahl – an engaging & well written book, which is very rich in a range of experiences, reflection and humour. This study culminated in the students producing their very own autobiographies, which were very interesting and entertaining. Year 8 - The Bridge to Terabithia, by Katherine Paterson Year 8 students have just completed a study of the classic novel: Bridge to Terabithia, by Katherine Paterson. Students discovered that friendship and saving graces can be found in the most unsuspecting people; that true friends make us better people for having known them and it's important to be prepared to "build bridges" with our family, our friends and our foes, because that's what will give us direction and the strength to overcome obstacles in life. Students used this novel as a springboard into composing a speech and writing an analytical essay. Year 9 – Came Back to Show You I Could Fly, by Robin Klein Came Back to Show You I can Fly is a gritty story, which presents interesting and vulnerable characters, who find an inner strength to not only endure the issues which confront them, but to ultimately propel them forward. The novel highlights the difficulty and triumph that can be experienced by average characters, living in average

situations. The novel introduces a range of issues which many contemporary Australian teenagers can relate to: family dysfunction¸ bullying, self-esteem, peer pressure, drugs and addiction, loneliness and teen pregnancy. These issues led to research into media and web based resources which complements students’ understanding of the wider world and reinforces their values and beliefs. This study culminated in two major pieces of work – a letter of advice to a chosen character and an analytical essay. Year 10 – Tomorrow, When the War Began, by John Marsden Ellie and her teenage friends return home from a camping trip to discover that their world has changed forever... Australia has been invaded and is in the grip of a relentless war. All members of the community of Wirrawee have been led away and held as prisoners of war. The town and surrounding countryside is deserted. Tomorrow, When the War Began confronts its readers with complex moral dilemmas... Would you fight? Would you give up everything? Would you sacrifice life itself? How would you survive? Year 10 students have answered these questions, and more, as they reflected on their values and beliefs and discovered their own inner strengths, in the process of evaluating those of the novel’s protagonists. Students have completed an extensive creative writing response to the novel and are currently in the process of writing an analytical essay. Year 11 Standard English – Reading to Write – Of Mice & Men, by John Steinbeck This unit explicitly taught skills in reading and writing to address the specific needs of senior English students. The focus text chosen for this unit was John Steinbeck’s literary masterpiece, Of Mice and Men – a novel characterised by concise description, whilst achieving a poetic elegance. Students also had the opportunity to read and respond to a range of other texts, including essays, poems, films, plays, songs, short stories, speeches and extracts from other novels. These other texts connect with the focus text through the study of genre, theme and style. After completing this unit, students compiled a writing folio, which included descriptive pieces of contextual writing, character profile pieces and analytical expositions. Year 12 Standard English In Module A: “Language, Identity and Culture” students embarked on an in-depth study of the way

Henry Lawson used language to paint a picture of the culture and identity of his contemporaries and how he also contributed to developing an emerging national identity and culture. Students studie Lawson’s classics: “The Drover’s Wife”, “The Loaded Dog” and “The Union Buries its Dead”, plus his lesser known stories: “Shooting the Moon” and “Our Pipes”. They also chose their own related texts in order to compare and contrast techniques used, and effects gained, with those adopted in Lawson’s stories. In response to their learning, students are in the process of producing a creative transformation of “The Drover’s Wife” and an analytical essay.

With a 16.7% projected increase in employment growth in the next 5 years*, becoming a Chef may be a career you wish to pursue if food is your passion. Chefs plan and organise the preparation and cooking of food in a number of settings including; restaurants, café’s, resorts, retirement homes, hospitals and hotels. Chefs:

Plan menus and determine food and labour costs.

Recruit and train staff.

Plan staff rosters and supervise the activities of cooks and assistants.

Discuss food preparation issues with managers, dietitians and other staff members.

Order food, kitchen supplies and equipment.

Demonstrate techniques to cooks and advise on cooking procedures.

Prepare and cook food.

Explain and enforce hygiene regulations.

Freeze and preserve foods.

Often chefs are required to work shiftwork including weekends and public holidays, sometimes on a 24 hour rotating roster. The work may be quite busy, especially at peak hours of the day and/or night. So during these periods, it is important to be able to concentrate under pressure. The range of duties carried out by chefs vary according to where they work and specific role they are appointed to. In larger establishments, the Chef de Cuisine or Head Chef generally does more supervising than cooking.

Senior chefs have to attend staff meetings, where they discuss problems related to their areas, and receive or issue instructions to other managerial staff. In small restaurants, the head chef may prepare food, assisted by other cooks or apprentices. As well as expert cooking knowledge, chefs involved in supervision need a general knowledge of the skills and activities of all their workers. Chefs who have management responsibilities may also perform duties such as complaints resolution and maintenance of financial records. Chef Specialisations are –

Chef de Cuisine (Head Chef - menu creation, management of kitchen staff, ordering and purchasing of inventory and plating design).

Chef de Partie (a cook who is in charge of one area of a restaurant's kitchen. In smaller kitchens, he or she may work alone, while in larger ones, a Chef de Partie may supervise others working at the same station).

Commis Chef (a basic chef in kitchens who works under a chef de partie. They will learn a specific station’s/ranges or sections responsibilities and operation. A Commis Chef may have recently completed formal culinary training or still undergoing training).

Demi Chef de Partie (is responsible for keeping a portion of line cooks or station chefs’ on time and organized during production).

Sous Chef/Second Chef (A Sous Chef is second in command after the Executive Chef in a professional kitchen).

To become a chef, it is important to; have a high level of cleanliness, enjoy cooking, be able to organise efficient work schedules, have good interpersonal, communication and customer service skills, are able to work as a leader and as part of a team, are punctual, are able to work under pressure and stay calm in difficult situations. There are different qualifications and apprenticeship opportunities depending on what type of chef you want to become whether it be a qualified Chef via an apprenticeship, a pastry chef or commercial cook. To become a qualified chef in Australia, it takes approximately 3 years to complete your training and make the transition from apprentice to qualified chef. This training is usually made up of working four days a week in a restaurant and one-day attending class at TAFE or college. In addition to TAFE, culinary schools or specialised colleges are an alternative way to get cooking qualifications. Many of these institutes are highly

regarded in the world of culinary arts and have excellent campuses to facilitate your learning. Like TAFE courses, culinary schools also require a combination of practical industry placement and class work. Remember: Entry requirements and costs of courses may vary, so make sure you do your research before making your final decision. P & C Update Hello and welcome back everyone to Term 2. A huge thank you to everyone that helped out with the school canteen last term and to those who have already volunteered for Term 2, the P& C thank you. The School Athletics was held on Monday and the P&C would like to thank all of those who helped out with the BBQ and morning tea and to those who donated cakes, slices soft drink and water a big thank you too! All of these donations made the day a very successful one! As next year is our major excursions ( school camps) year , this year will be the P& C major fundraising year. All fundraising this year will go towards helping to reduce the costs of the camps. Next weekend the 18th and 19th of May we have 2 opportunities to do this. Number 1 is a cake stall! As the federal election is on Saturday 18th May we will be holding a cake stall at the school in front of the library. So any cakes, slices , biscults or other homemade goods would greatly be appreciated as well as volunteers to help run the stall. Number 2 is Flagging at Balaranld Motorcross We have been asked to supply flaggies for both Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th May at Balaranld Motorcross. This is a guaranteed $500.00 per day making $1000.00 for the two days up for graps and a great fundraising opportunity! We will be requiring 8 flaggies for Saturday and again

Road Safety Week We are lucky in Swan Hill to have fairly quiet roads, but road safety is still a very important skill set for your children to have. Travelling to school on foot or by bike is an excellent way to get active, and gives you the opportunity to teach them how to be safe around roads. As the days get shorter, it is difficult to make time for physical activity after school/work, so active commuting is the perfect way to be productive and learn about road safety. Check out Bicycle network for some road safety tips, here: https://www.bicyclenetwork.com.au/tips-resources/

Play outside! With Play Outside Day coming up this Saturday, try and get a bit of outdoors time in every day this week. As the days get shorter and cooler, it’s tempting to curl up on the couch with a book or a screen for the evening. BUT! It’s important to try and squeeze in some time outside getting fresh air. Outdoor games afterschool are a great way to get you and your children active and having fun. Or if you have older kids, go for a walk and take time for a good chat to see how the first weeks of school are going

This week marks the beginning of National Families Week (15th May – 21st May). A good reason to spend some time with your family doing the things you all enjoy. This week is a time to celebrate with family, make contact with extended family and friends, and share in the enjoyment of family activities within the wider community. Let each family member choose an activity for a week packed full of fun!
