Secondary students: Are required to bring a CHARGED laptop to school each day as part of our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy. Are able to bring their mobile phone to school however the mobile phone and headphones must not be seen or heard during class time and must be used appropriately before, after school and during breaks. If a mobile phone is seen it will be confiscated. Note: Please do not ring your child during school hours. If you need to contact your child please call the Front Office and they will pass on any messages etc. Mindful Monday During the second half of lunch on Mondays, students are able to come along to 'Mindful Monday'. Mindful Monday focuses on developing student wellbeing and developing resilience. As part of each session, students take part in a meditation and a question designed to promote gratitude. Some of the questions have been, 'What makes you smile?', 'What went well today?’ The students who have attended these sessions have been developing some fantastic skills. GOTCHA's I am sure you have all heard about our Gotcha system. Our students are very excited about our new system and are often telling us how many Gotcha's they have in the box. For those of you who aren't sure, teachers and other school staff distribute Gotcha's to students for doing the right thing. These Gotcha's are then placed in a box in the Front Office and draw is held each fortnight. So far our winners of a $5 Canteen Voucher have been: Noah B and Isabella and Emma and Josh. Braverly Last week our Secondary Girls took part in a Braverly Workshop. This workshop focused on developing self love, bullying and consent. Our students had a fantastic time and developed important life skills. I was extremely impressed with the maturity and confidence our students demonstrated. Techno Power Thank you to the parents who came along to our Techno Power Workshop last week. It was a fantastic opportunity to help understand how to develop cyber wellness for our young people and outlined important strategies to keep our children safe online.

HSC Minimum Standards 2020 is the first year that students will need to achieve Minimum Standards in Reading, Writing and Numeracy to achieve their HSC. To achieve this students need complete a test in each of these areas, achieving a certain standard. Throughout their senior studies, students will have a number of opportunities to sit these tests. Currently our Stage 6 students are well on track to achieve this. Over the next few weeks Year 10 students will begin their tests as part of the process

Get your brain to work for you I love the feeling of driving back to my parents’ place, where I grew up, mostly because no matter how long it has been since I was there last, the route to take is as familiar as if I drove it yesterday. I certainly don’t need google maps to tell me the way. I have driven those roads so many times that it’s not even a conscious thought to turn left or right anymore – it just happens! Maybe you know the feeling too. Our brains work in a similar way. The more we repeat a thought, the more automated it becomes. Every repeat strengthens the connections between different parts of the brain (called neural pathways), and this shapes the way we think, and therefore feel and act. Here’s a list of questions you can use for yourself, and for your family, to generate regular gratitude conversations… and in doing that build more positive, healthier and happier brains. Gratitude conversation starters:

“Finish this sentence. Today was wonderful

because…”

“What made you smile today?”

“When you look outside, what do you see that

you are grateful for?”

“What is something you might take for granted

that you are grateful for?”

“Describe a hobby or activity that makes you

happy.”

“What are you proud of?’

“What’s a tradition you’re grateful for?”

“What is something you achieved recently?”

Our childhood memories and experiences tend to stick with us and shape us as adults. What a wonderful difference building the practice of gratitude into your kids will make for the rest of their lives! Liz Hindle School Chaplain

Primary News Louisa Frost (Assistant Principal) The term has continued to fly by, with numerous sporting activities and events happening.

Last Friday I had the opportunity to attend the PSSA Moulamein Swimming Carnival with our team. It was great to see so many of our students having a go. Congratulations to Beau Andrews who was Junior Age Group Champion and to Sophie Kentish who was runner up.

Sophie and Beau had an excellent day at the PSSA Moulamein Swimming Carnival

Over the course of the last few weeks, the students have also had the opportunity to participate in golf and cricket sessions, as part of our Sporting Schools funding. These were enjoyed by all the students.

Last Friday was Clean Up Australia Day, the school grounds certainly looked good after all the hard work the students put in.

Today everyone worked towards making a gratitude tree. This activity is part of our Harmony Day celebrations.

Finally I would like to wish all our competitors swimming in Albury next week the best of luck.

Year 5/6 Louisa Frost (Class Teacher)

The Year 5/6 students have been learning about writing narratives. We have been using the Seven Steps story graph to help with our planning. Here are some examples of the "Sizzling Starts" the students have written.

Sizzling Starts In a ‘poof’ of smoke, the room filled with black clouds. I stepped into the room and I heard some evil giggling. I saw a black figure come out to the fog. By Campbell Today I went to go for a walk and do some magic tricks (and pranks). I got some bang good pranks. KABLUEY. What was that? It was a house. By Billy. Shatter goes the vase as the girl gets up to Mischief. She first goes in to her mum and dad’s room and breaks the first thing she sees. By Myah. Magic and Mischief. POOF! A cloud of smoke appeared. Izzy squinted her eyes, Lyss and Kenna had disappeared. The witch and her goblins creeped closer. Izzy fled. But Lucy was still unconscious. By Makenna. Magic and Mystery. BANG! The gun recoiled in my hand. It hit the Magician in the chest making him stagger into the crowd. Sirens began to blare. The screams came. By Liam. ‘Got ya’ Granny whispered. Granny snuck back to the haunted house to do something no one has ever done before. She giggled. She is crazy! By Lucy. BANG!!! The glass shatters into teeny tiny pieces, “If you dare to walk over what will you find?” Says the wizard. And someone does, but something felt strange. By Summer ZAP! ZAM! BANG! That’s all I heard when I entered the wizard’s room. I watched it in disbelief as sticks flew through the air. I couldn’t wait to see more. By Isabel.

Bang! The gun went off. It was extremely loud. I hate the sound. By Mahayla .

Secondary News Jean Duma (Head Teacher) This term we have two rounds of Sporting Schools activities for our students. Secondary have already participated in Golf, and over the next two weeks will participate in two cricket sessions. Sporting Schools is a fantastic initiative which provides further opportunities for students to engage in sport; particularly in sports students may not have access to at school or in the community. Congratulations to Phoebe N and Tara who participated in the Riverina Secondary Swimming Championships on Monday. Our Open Boys Basketball team are competing at Deniliquin this Friday and we wish them all the best for their games.

Students are reminded that they need to be in correct school uniform and have the correct equipment for each of their lessons. This includes having the correct sports uniform and joggers for Sport / PE, and fully enclosed leather shoes particularly for when lessons are in the Science Lab, Kitchen, Woodwork room or Ag plot.

Emily and Summer cooking pancakes for Shove Tuesday.

Science Leeta Rutherford (Science Teacher) Science & Engineering Challenge On Thursday 27th February, the Year 9 and 10 students participated in the Science and Engineering Challenge organised by the University of Newcastle. The students spent the day at the Grain Shed undertaking 7 challenges. The students were in teams of 2 or three and each team (except for the silver team) got to participate in 2 challenges. The half-day challenges were: Confounding Communications – Each group of students were provided with 2 terminals, which they will use to communicate with each other, using various coloured light, transmitted through an optical fibre. Students were assessed on their speed and accuracy.

Zahra and Owen testing their speed and accuracy

Helter Skelter Shelter – Students constructed a tall earthquake-proof tower using only basic materials, sound engineering principles, and ingenuity. At the end of the session the towers were put to the test on an earthquake simulator. These were undertaken by the purple team (Taylen, Tyson and Will) and blue team (Emma, Jordan and Tara)

Tara, Emma and Jordan with their earthquake-proof tower. Stringways – The aim of this half-day activity is to develop rail networks that convey trains in the most efficient way possible. The higher the efficiency of linkage (i.e. minimum travel distance) the more points your team earns.

Dyson and Emily plotting rail networks.

Turbine – Students constructed a water turbine from Styrofoam, plastic and tape. The design was then tested to determine its capacity to generate electrical power. These were undertaken by the green team (Riley and Summer) and yellow team (Dyson and Emily)

Riley and Summer creating turbines

Future Power – Students plugged “power stations” into a large board and then controlled the supply of power to a variety of infrastructure on the other side of the board. The infrastructure was represented by lines of switches which were turned on or off by the students. Grasping at Straws – Students are required to design, build and use a 'bionic hand' built from PVC pipe, string, straws, and timber coffee stirrers. Each group will then assess the effectiveness of their construction in several tests. These were undertaken by the orange team (Mia and Ella) and red team (Owen and Zahra)

Mia and Ella grasping with straws.

The whole day challenge was Bridge – Build a small bridge from balsa, pins, tape, paddle pop sticks etc. Points were awarded for strength and load-carrying capacity (tested with dynamic loads). This was undertaken by the silver team (Mitchell and Beau). The bridges were tested at the end of the day in front of all who were there on the day.

Mitchell and Beau constructing bridges.

I am very proud of the students, they demonstrated creative and critical thinking, along with persistence, in all the challenges undertaken. They never lost focus for the whole day and supported one another. We unfortunately did not win the overall day, though we came close. We did however win some of the challenges, blue team won ‘helter skelter shelter’ and ‘confounding communications’ yellow team won ‘turbine’ and orange team won ‘grasping at straws’. Congratulations to all students, no matter where they finished in the challenges, the biggest thing is that none of our students gave up and that they all finished the challenge set for them. Student’s comments ‘It was the most thrilling, exhilarating and fully legit. It

was riveting but no phones ☹’ Mitchell

‘The STEM excursion in Swan Hill was a great experience. It brought us to work together as a team. It also made us problem solve and made us go out of the box.’ Tara ‘The STEM activities stretched our knowledge and made us engage and think outside the box.’ Emma E ‘This was a great opportunity for us year 9/10 students as we had a chance to test our skills at the Grain shed in the science and technology challenge’ Mia S ‘The STEM excursion was a very enjoyable and educational experience. It was a good opportunity to meet new people and see people I knew before, as well as learn new things from other people.’ Zahra ‘I liked how it was social and fun’ ‘It was a good occasion to catch up with friends’ Ella Foley

HEAD LICE Have you checked your child’s head for head lice, please be vigilant and check your child’s hair regularly. Please check your child’s hair, treat and remove head lice and nits from the hair. Hair should be checked regularly as the nits and head lice can be persistent. Leaving one nit can continue the cycle.

Treating once does not contain the problem it must be monitored continually.

To break the cycle you must remove the nits (eggs)

from the hair strands.
