It is a legal requirement that students attend school every day. If your child is absent you must send a note of explanation. Attached to this edition of ‗The Bridge‘ is a proforma you are able to use. Best Dressed It has been fantastic to see most of our students in full school uniform. Uniform is important in ensuring equality across the student peer group and allows students to feel that they are part of the school. Can you please ensure your child is in full school uniform at all times, if your child is unable to wear uniform, please provide a note for your child‘s teacher. Upcoming Events Already this semester we have a wonderful range of activities organised already for your students. Please keep an eye on your students‘ bag to ensure you are receiving all notes so you can remain up to date and informed about the events in our school

Home Reading Home reading is an important aspect of your child‘s literacy development. Each student in primary has a yellow home reading booklet where they record how much reading they have undertaken. Just fifteen minutes of reading a night can make a huge difference to your child‘s abilities.

Easter Hat Parade

Year One/Two Year One/Two had a busy end to Term One. The students used their exploration of the fable ‗The Old Mouse‘ to help them created a digital fable with Ebenezer as the main character. They planned, wrote and illustrated the fable. Year One/Two drew the pictures for their fable on the computer and it has now been published to the Ebenezer website. You can view the student‘s stories at the following address: http://www.cli.nsw.edu.au/ebenezer/ebenezer_q_emu/index.htm Once at this website you will need to click on ‗Library‘ and we are on page 5.

Year One/Two actively participated in the Easter Hat Parade and during their Easter activity session they got to play Easter games with Year Seven/Eight on the computers. Paddy won the colouring competition for Year One and Broden won the colouring competition for Year Two. Ryan, Valerie and Yazmyn spoke about what they liked about Term One. Term Two has started with some changes for Year One/Two they will not be split after lunch (except on Friday for Sport) and we are expecting new students in our class, Library will be on Thursday. This week Year One/Two joined Kindergarten to listen to Senior Constable Jane McInnes talk about 000, knowing where they and how to contact mum or dad, stranger danger and bike and road safety, they were also able to share their experiences and knowledge and ask questions. The Year One/Twos and Kinders got to make a finger print.

Constable Jane Mc Innes talks to Year One/Two about stranger danger and road safety.

Numeracy Parent Tips

1. Get involved — be proactive about your child‘s numeracy.

2. Be positive — avoid imparting your fear of maths onto your children.

3. Show your child how mathematics applies to real-life situations.

4. Encourage children to take part in activities that use their maths skills like grocery shopping within a budget or measuring materials for craft activities.

5. Get a list or poster of multiplication tables at home.

6. Remain calm when helping with homework — play some classical music in the background if it helps your child and take a break when it gets frustrating for both parent and child.

7. Talk to the teacher to clarify teaching methods if your child says ―we don‘t do it this way in class‖.

8. Use maths on the weekend — if you are planning a visit to a number of theme parks, ask your child to work out which is better value for money.

Secondary Report We’re Back! Welcome back to all staff and students for an exciting and full term of learning. The term is already in full swing with plenty of activities, learning opportunities and assessment underway. Congratulations to all students for returning with a positive attitude ready to learn in the new term. Tutti Frutti the Opera? Our senior students were fortunate enough to experience a live performance of the play Cosi in Swan Hill on Wednesday night. Year 12 are currently studying the play as their close text for the HSC and this performance gave them a rare opportunity to see a dramatic show. The comedic performances had everyone laughing and prompted discussion that continued the next day. All students and staff who attended were impressed by the quality of performance and highly enjoyed the show – our year 11 students are looking forward to studying the text in the next year. All students should be commended on their behaviour both at Carriages Restaurant before the performance and during the show – they were a credit to our school. Student Welfare Students were put through their paces in the first few days of term completing workshops on welfare and bullying with the police liaison officer Jane McInnes and Student Welfare Officer, Vicki Hutton. These workshops are important in giving our students the skills and knowledge on how to deal with tough situations both at school and in the community. All hot and sweaty Well done to all students who participated in the cross country on Friday afternoon. It was great to see so many students competing and posting great times. Gone but not forgotten (Year 7/8 TAS) Term One ended and despite students best efforts our one of a kind Candle Holders were just not ready to go home. This term the Workshop erupted into life with students anxious to complete their projects, ready to take home in time for mother‘s

day. Every candle holder is unique with the design of the projects shape being generated by the students themselves in the design process. Students bent, twisted and bashed their projects into shape and appeared to enjoy making these projects, as well as being allowed to make a lot of noise in the process.

VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS 2009 The New South Wales Government provides much of the necessary equipment and materials for the efficient running of the school. However, to keep up to date with the latest textbooks and to supply materials for such subjects as technics, craft and food technology, parents are asked to make a voluntary contribution. These are reviewed each year and kept to an absolute minimum, and are payable at the beginning of each school year. These contributions are important in ensuring that we can optimize learning opportunities for students. Your cooperation in this regard is greatly appreciated.

TV Turnoff…

Children who watch more television tend to

eat more unhealthy foods and be less

physically active. They tend to snack more

and ask for food advertised more.

Research has shown that children who watch

more television are more likely to be

overweight and have lower fitness.

Watching TV is sedentary (inactive)

behaviour which increases the risk of

obesity.

Television may be more influential than

family in setting children’s food choices.

Food advertising has the potential to set up

in children poor eating habits which affect

their short term and long term health.

Research has also shown that television has

negative effects on violence and aggressive

behaviour, education and self image.
