Tacoma Hosts Carom Corners World TournamentIf you thought billiards (threecushion) was a boring old mansgame, you were only half right. While I sat and watched thisdiscipline of the billiard world, Iknew that experience in thisgame, to master theartistry of rails, speedand geometry wouldtake this pool playeranother lifetime. Asfar as boring, it couldnot be further from thetruth. Although it doesnot have the flash orglamour of 9-ball, ithas the true scienceof the game. One must understandhow the game isplayed.A three-cushionbilliard is valid and isa count of one in anyof the following cases:(1) the cue ball strikesthe first object balland then strikes threeor more cushionsbefore striking thesecond object ball; (2) the cueball strikes three or morecushions and then strikes thetwo object balls; (3) the cue ball
(continued from the front page)
strikes a cushion, then strikesthe first object ball, and thenstrikes two or more cushionsbefore striking the second objectball; (4) the cue ball strikes twocushions, then strikes the first
object ball, and then strikes oneor more cushions before strikingthe second object ball.A three-cushion count means
three impacts. These impactsneed not necessarily be on threedifferent cushions to beconsidered a valid count. A validcount may be executed on onecushion or on two cushions if it
is the result of the spin on theball. (For more information aboutthe rules go to http://w w w . u s c a r o m . o r g /
usba_instruction_rules.html)With that understanding thestage is set for a match. Totalpoints for a match is 40 (50). Inan atmosphere of shear silenceone watches the masters go to
work. When a goodpoint is made, it ismuch like when I wasin Grenwich Village inthe mid to late 60s,we applauded byclicking our fingers,so is it with billiards. There is no musicglaring, no smokeengulfed room andno chatter from theaudience. Just totalappreciation of themasters as they goabout their science.Dressed to the Ts,s p o r t s m a n s h i p ,honor and above allto be a gentleman atall times, we could alltake a lesson fromthese men ofbilliards. true science of spheres on atable. For more information andphotographs log on towww.OnTheBreakNews.com

Tacoma ElksMay 1419, 2002Torbjörn Blomdahl went undefeated in eleven games to win theUSBA/Carom Corner tournament held May 1419, 2002 at theTacoma Elks in Tacoma, Washington. Second place finisher, SangChun Lee, was also undefeated with a 10/0 win/loss record goinginto the final against Blomdahl, but Blomdahl was too strong in thefinal match finishing 50 points in 18 innings. Sang Lee scored 36points in his 18 innings for an average of 2.000 but even that wasnot enough to beat Blomdahl. Blomdahl averaged 1.756 for thetournament.Raymond Ceulemans, the Living Legend and current UMB World
Champion, finished third and demonstrated that he is still on top ofhis game with a grand average of 1.644. For a moment it looked asthough Ceulemans would hand Lee his first loss of the tournament.Ceulemans was leading 4837 and suddenly it was over in twoinnings when Lee ran ten and in the next inning three to close outthe match. Ceulemans had three losses against Blomdahl, Lee,and Henk Habraken, who finished fourth averaging 1.477. PedroPiedrabuena finished fifth with the same 8/3 win/loss record asCeulemans and Habraken both of whom averaged higher thanPiedrabuena.

Did You Know?
Carom Versus Pool Cuesby: Ron Kilby
In general, pool and carom players use distinctly different cues fromone another. While certain individuals are skilled at both gamesusing only one cue, they are the exception. Pool playerspredominantly use a 58 inch, 19 oz. average weight cue with a12.75 to 13.25 mm tip. The joint of a pool cue normally incorporatesa steel bolt and may have a steel collar as well.Shaft flex varies widely among pool players, with entire segmentsof the population insisting that their particular taper and flex is THEultimate and final solution to the hotly debated issue of squirt, deflection, power, etc. The challenges and counter-challengesamong pool cue makers over such matters is the marketingmanagers dream (or nightmare, as the case may be.) Caromplayers, on the other hand, whose distribution worldwide is probablygreater than pool, have long since settled the issue to their generalsatisfaction. Carom cues are shorter, typically from 54 to56 inches long, lighter, typically 16.5 to 18.5 ounces, and use 11-12mm tips, only rarely smaller or larger. Carom cues traditionallyhave a joint which includes wooden threads on the end of the shaft,or some other joint that minimizes the weight in the joint becausecarom players prefer their cues to balance more under the hand. Acarom cue has a thicker butt and commonly a much thicker jointthan a pool cue, and the overall taper of the cue shaft, with a fewnotable exceptions, is nearly conical from joint to tip. Summarily, acarom cue is much stiffer than a pool cue. A carom ball weighsalmost exactly an ounce more than a pool ball (some varieties evenmore); hence more energy is required to drive it around a table. Acarom player wishes to develop such touch for the game that theycan repeatedly control the distance a ball travels, perhaps aftertraveling 3 times around the table, to a final destination within 2inches of a given spot on the table. A stiff cue permits developingthat touch better than a flexible cue. Additionally, carom billiardsuses much more controlled extreme english than pool. Being ableto repeat the effect of a given english is vital to a carom player; astiff shaft, which flexes less and absorbs less energy in the hit, permits that repeatability. Among carom players, the choice of cuelength, weight, and tip is driven by the specific game, from the verylight cue normally used in the small games, straight-rail andbalkline, to the slightly heavier cues used for 3-cushion. Theemphasis on stiffness is generally constant. Pool players oftenregard carom cues as clunky, unattractive implements at best. Thosewho had the good fortune to attend the Carom Corner Event at theTacoma Elks over the 18-19 May weekend, and watch the InimitableRaymond Ceulemans at play may have revised that opinion.
The author is an Oregon cuemaker, having built both pool and caromcues for some 18 years, and has played both pool and carom billiardsfor many more.

This trick shot is the testshot before you set up theMiller Lite Beercommercial shot thatSteve The MIZ Mizerakmade so famous.Place balls as shown. BallB sometimes needs to beadjusted up to ½ to a fullball back from the tip of theside pocket as shown.Dont forget to move ballA the same distance aswell. Some of the reasonsare: rail height, how old ordirty the balls are, type ofcloth used, humidity, straightness of the rail, etc.The cue ball should beabout twelve to sixteeninches from ball A andabout three inches off ofthe rail. With a moderate hardstroke hit the cue ball withhigh left English. Aim sothat the cue ball hits ball A1/3 full on the right side.Ball A will go into the corner
pocket, ball B will bank across the table into the side pocket and thecue ball will go three rails and pocket ball C in the corner pocket. Thisshot looks impressive but its not a hard shot. I hope you enjoy this one.

Whitesell Has His Dayfrom: Clay Skidmore
Spokane, Washington, May 4-5, 2002On the weekend of May 4-5 McQs Billiards held another edition of ourclass B 9-ball tournament. Once again the event attracted a sold outfield of 64 competitors, and there were plenty of spectators to watch theaction. Mike Shannon, making his first trip over from Seattle in a fewyears, made the best of it by working his way through a very tough bracket. After an opening round win over Donna Totten 7-5, Mike went on to defeatBob White 7-4, C.C. House 7-4, Tony Etchechoury 7-4, Jeff Jimenez 7-1,and Mike Gordon 7-2 to claim the drivers seat. Mike was the early pacesetter. But on derby weekend there was a horse coming on the outside. And down to the stretch they come. Its the Umatilla Gorilla JeremyWhitesell !!! After an opening round defeat to Jeff Jimenez 4-7, Jeremywas sent to the B-side. He then went on to beat Adam Scarpelli 7-1, NickLopez 7-4, Rick Adams 7-3, Lyle Redthunder 7-6, Bruce Albert 7-4, GaryScola 7-5, Mary Hopkin 7-4 (who was also our top lady finisher), JeffJiminez 7-5, Scott Chandler 7-0, and Mike Gordon 7-3 to reach the finals. For those not counting Jeremy was riding a 10 match win streak and hewasnt done yet. After edging out a close 7-5 win in the first set. Jeremyleft little doubt in the second. Taking control early he cruised down thelane and won going away 7-2 to cap a 12 match winning streak. Veryimpressive Jeremy. Thanks again to those that played, and to the few players that got shutout at the window. Take my advice, pay our entry early to avoid missingout. Until next time enjoy the races.1st Jeremy Whitesell $800 + $320 side pot2nd Mike Shannon $5003rd Mike Gordon $3504th Scott Chandler $2505th Jeff Jimenez $150

Tony Finds Gold at McQsfrom: Clay Skidmore
Spokane, Washington April 27-28, 2002On April 27th 28th, McQs played host to 48 class C 8-ball players. Thefield again was a sell out and it was also very competitive. As always thenew faces make me nervous but there didnt seem to be anyone too outof line. Of course there is always someone that plays good cuz someonehas to win, and like I always said a 140 bowler can bowl a 220 game. Youjust never know when its going to happen.Tony Golden making his first appearance at McQs held off a strongchallenge from Tim Mandelas. After a close 4-5 defeat to Tim in the firstset, Tony turned the tables and won the second set 5-4. I am still seeinga lot of players that try there hearts out and are still a little overmatched inthe C tournament, so I am planning to do a class D tournament nextfall. Thanks again to all that played and Ill see you next time.1st Tony Golden $425 + $70 side pot2nd Tim Mandelas $3003rd Cale Russell $2004th Brian Smiedy $1255th Kathy Garrett $75

Forever JuneJune. That month of the longest day and the sweetness ofearly summer. That month of attrition in the pool ranks when
players chase smaller balls on larger, softer fieldsof green. When shooting means trap or pigeons. When shark-bait takes on a whole differentmeaning and table runs are between picnicbenches.Summer the time for regrowth of energy andenthusiasm in preparation for the autumnonslaught of Tournament Time and league-filledwinter. Many of us take these months off from
shooting pool, believing the break is good for our game. We gooff to let the sun shine into different rooms. And for some itworks well. I have actually given up pool for a chunk of time, personally testing this theory. I was highly successful for 9whole days, then the memory-echo of the clacking balls andfeel of my cue drove me to the nearest table! How many driving passions can any one mind sustain? Perhapsfor some, the passion is actually the competitive nature of thegames played. Competition igniting the coals of the soul, creatingroom in the psyche and releasing energy for more than oneconsuming activity. For me, pool is more like picking up the hotcoal - cant let go and the burning stays with me always. I wasrecently watching a commercial video of pro players, commentated by one of the top women pros. She excitedlyawakens each day because she knows she will get to play for xnumber of hours. She happily goes to sleep each night becauseshe knows when she wakes up shell get to play again. This isdriving passion; the burn that stays, combusting with firestartingcompetition. For this deep enduring grand obsession, there isonly one kind of green field, and the passion becomes thegreenhouse for growth.Happy longest day, and may the sun grow your spirit in manyshades of green.Mary Price, roamer of greenfields.

Product Reviews
The Pocket Lathe TM SystemThis is not a high-speed lathe as the name may indicate. The slow rotation creates a very nice nickel or dimeshape. You have to shape your tip to begin the lathe-like shaping. The reason is your tip is probably flat. It
leaves a perfectly shaped tip. This is one of the best tips I have had. From the slow motion of your hand spinning your shaft while
shaping the tip with the sandpaper, you wouldnt expectany progress to be made. But within less
than a minute you will begin to seethe nickel or dime shapecurvature that is consistent as
you eyeball the tip. Smooth and ready for play.Use of the Pocket Lathe TM System will reduce tip loss by correctly shaping your tip withminimal leather removal. The system is available with 80, 100, 120 and 150 grit paper that will shape/scuff anyhardness tip uniformly.A must have for tip shaping. The only better way to shape your tip is on a real lathe. For information on this product, contact On The Break by email at: [email protected] or by calling toll free1-877-285-3099.

At first look it would appear to be lobster-like claws.Lightweight machine polished aluminum for extrasmooth edges, that comes in black anodized or goldplated. The slip lock has a soft rubber lined couplet toprevent rocking or tilting. After putting on any shaft 13mm or less, you can adjustwith the hand you are holding the shaft whilepositioning your shooting cue. Gives you angle, heightand flexibility for your bridge. If you dont have this inyour arsenal and your opponent does advantage, your opponent.A must see and use to appreciate. QI am not aware of anybrand-to-brand billiardtable comparison butmany of the web sitessupported by manufacturers will have information on the
construction of their particular tables. With a little information at handyou can do some research to compare. I will try to address some of thekey things to look for.First thing probably goes without saying, all tables are not created equal. You must ask yourself what you really want this table to do. Is itentertainment for the kids, are you looking for an heirloom or somethingin between? How the table is constructed and with what materials shoulddictate your price.Low priced tables, those under $1500, are going to have lots of particleboard, brackets, faux finishes and either no slate or thin slate. If youwant a table for the kids to play on and dont care what happens to itafter they fly the coup then by all means go ahead. Dont look for atable that is going to hold its value or even a level at this price range. Many companies will not service or recover these tables so be careful.Between $1500 and $2500 it gets more difficult. The trade off inmaterials and workmanship gets more confusing. Some parts of thetable may be particle board, others plywood and still others solid wood.Slate will very in thickness and type. Finishes may be laminate or veneer. You are not going to find a solid wood table at this price, so look closely.Look for a table that has the body completely constructed, not one thathas to be put together from pieces. The only parts should be the legs,rails/pockets and slate. Every place that a bolt goes should havesomething sturdy to hold onto. Plywood is preferable to particle board. The thicker the slate the better and three piece is better than one pieceslate. The next level is almost as confusing but between $2500 - $3000 dollarsyou can hope to see more solid wood, especially in the structural partsof the table. You can get a table made completely from solid hardwoodwith furniture finish quality although it may not have a Big Name logoon it. Many of these tables are just as good and play just as well as theBig Names. For most folks this is where you want to be. How good adeal you get may depend on where you are and what the market is inyour area. In our area we can offer a completely solid maple table witha 1" three piece slate delivered and set up with good quality cloth andaccessories in this price range. Other suppliers may have to ship fartheror pay more in overhead, etc., so remember that this is a guideline andnot a rule.At this level and beyond you should look for a body that is solidlyconstructed with solid wood cross members in the body. They shouldspan both the length and the width of the table. The slate should havewood backing on it to rest completely on the interior body structure. The slate should be 1", three piece, oversized slate. No matter whatyou have heard, 3 piece slate is better. The rails should be solid woodand bolt directly to the slate. You should be able to get diamond inlaysof mother of pearl or such, not plastic buttons. Pockets should be leatherand not plastic. Finally, the cloth should be at least a 21 oz. 75/25wool/nylon blend.Beyond the $3000 - $3500 range you are going to be paying for theextras; the name, prettier pockets, extra carving, fancy wood, fastcloth and custom or one of a kind type tables. The best advice I can give you is to go shopping, compare these itemsfrom table to table. Make sure you ask if installation is included. Whatkind of accessories and cloth are included. Do they have guaranteesand stand behind their install? How much experience do their installershave? Looking at a web site? Make doubly sure you ask these questionsof the online resellers. There is a lot of false information on some ofthe so called wholesale sites. Get your info in writing! Thanks again, Leo

Karen Corr
Miss Corr was very gracious in thankingthe sponsors and crowd and said she haddreamed of winning this match since losingin the finals in 2001. In contrast to thewomens final, the mens final match wasfast paced and almost flawless.Undefeated Charlie Williams met Tony
Robles in a battle for the title. Neitheropponent had ever won a major title
event on TV. The two men are bestof friends and began the match
by staring each other down, and then giving each other a good luck hug beforelagging for the break. Williams won the lag and began
a match that resulted in an even exchange of points onthe board until Tony failed to make the three ball in the eighth
game to make the score 4-4. Mr. Williams ran the next two racksin record speed before Tony would run one more rack in less than
two minutes time making the score 6-4. With the break belonging toCharlie while on the hill, he was able to get to the table and run the lastand final break. As he sunk the last shot, his joy overflowed! His firstmajor title! His opponent his best friend, but always a true gentleman,Tony Robles congratulated him, hugged him and raised Charlies armfor the crowd - truly happy for his friend. Watch for the broadcast of alltaped matches on ESPN.

Las Vegas, Nevada The finals of theBCA Open 9-Ball Championships wereheld today before a packed house. Theday began with the womens division finalin which Karen Corr met undefeated VivianVillarreal in a quest for the coveted title. The match between the two women wasa circus of errors and mis-cues normallyunseen in a championship match. Thematch began with an evenexchange of the lead between
Ms, Villarreal and Ms. Corr - with neither playing up totheir full potential. With the score 3-3, a mis-cue on theseven ball by Vivian in the seventh game seemed to bethe turning point of the match for Karen. After Karen took thematch to 6-4, it looked like Ms. Villarreal would not get back to thetable since Ms. Corr had the final break. But a missed shot on theseven ball by Karen had Vivian jumping out of her chair in hopes of arebirth. She sank the seven and was in great position on the nine for thegame, but rattled it in the pocket. As all hope was dashed for Vivian, Ms.Corr rose to finish the match. Vivian was overcome with emotion indisappointment. Having played strong all week and surviving undefeated, she entered the final feeling confident of a win. She said, I came to thistournament feeling like I was going to win. This was a very tough loss.

The B Division for the Men was a tight match again. Dave Brewer ofBozeman, also playing in the Open VNEA Leagues. Dave was on thepoint and had to be beat twice. He was pitted against Joe Palm fromMalta and Joe ended up winning the first set. Now going into the final setDave jumped out to an early lead 2-0, only needing one more game.Dave broke ran down to the 8-ball and hooked himself. He kicked at the8-ball, hit it but did not make it in the pocket. Joe ran down, had acombination into the corner pocket, made the 13-ball that he called butscratched in the side, therefore giving Dave ball-in-hand on the 8-ball.Joe conceded without letting Dave shoot. So the Mens Champion on theB-side was Dave Brewer from Bozeman. On the Mens A-side the final match pitted six time Champion Jerry Kohmagainst Woody Roberts of Winifred, who had been beat by Jerry earlierin the day to go to the losers bracket and fought his way back through, beating Jason Tigart of Great Falls to face Jerry in the finals. The shootingwas excellent on both sides, came up to a hill-hill match with Woodywinning the final game. Now going into the second set Jerry jumped outwith back-to-back wins. Woody breaks, a powerful snap into the rack, four balls are pocketed and so is the cue ball. Jerry takes ball-in-handruns the table and claims his seventh title!Congratulations to all the players on their sportsmanship, their honorand their pool etiquette. The M.C.M.O.A. sponsored the 22nd 8-Ball Championship and on apersonal note I was glad to see a lot of my friends that I havent seen fora couple, three years and at least some that I hadnt seen for a year orthat I only seem to see at this tournament. You can find the results alsoon OnTheBreakNews.com.Now for probably the most unusual turn of events of the tournament.Something that is rather difficult to believe but humorous in the sameway. The first player is on the 8-ball with an extremely difficult cut into thecorner pocket. The 8-ball hangs up in the corner pocket as the cue balltravels to a rail and into the center of the table. The second player picksup the cue ball and calls a foul, while saying, You didnt patch your pocket. The first player informs him it is not a foul to not patch the pocket youintend the 8-ball to go into as long as you make a legal hit, but picking upthe cue ball is so Foul on you. The first player takes the cue ball, places it on the table and shoots the 8-ball into the pocket he had firstintended. Game over. The second player never realizes that now the firstplayer has fouled by pocketing the 8-ball and not patching the pocket.Although he never realized it, they both discussed patching the pocketjust a few short moments ago.

Dan The Man LouieTakes Ten Ball Tournament
at The Cue Loungeby: Linda Carter
Can THIS man be beaten? It seems like in any tournament he enters, hecan stroll to the finish line without breaking a sweat. Even when one ofhis opponents displayed unbecoming and bizarre behavior, he finishedlike a champion. Of course, the mostaccurate shooter is favored to win with theshoot-out rules, since every MISS results ina ball-in-hand! Throw in the 3-foul rule andthe 7-game knockout rule, which declares anearly victor if they are up by 7 games, andthe long races to 13, and you have a mixthat favors the best shooters.Danny Louie came out on top at The CueLounge in Kent, WA over the weekend ofApril 27-28. He went through the wholetourney undefeated, with wins over JeffJiminez, 14-10 (Jeff actually led most of thematch), Larry Nelson 13-8, Linda Carter 8-1,a nail-biter with Eddie Carrido 13-12, and Rich Geiler for the point, 13-10.Now all he had to do was sit back and relax and see who would meet himin the finals. That decision would be played out between Eddie and Rich. Eddiesoundly defeated Rich in the semifinals 13-9, so Eddie got his rematch, but he would need to beat Danny twice to win. Eddie, a great veteranplayer, had reached the finals posting wins over Mike Zimmerman 13-11and Gerry Van Scharrel 13-9, before losing to Danny 12-13. On the Bside, he KOd Scott Chandler 9-1, and won against Gerry again 13-8,and Rich Geiler 13-9, before succumbing to Danny in the finals in oneset, 13-9. Congratulations to both gentlemen that played so well. They(and most everyone else) have figured out the strategy for the 3-foul ruleis that if you are on 1-foul, then blast the balls out...sometimes you getlucky!Honorable mentions should go to Marlon Oliveros and Scott Chandlerwho finished 5th in their first tries at 10-ball, Gerry Van Scharrel who hadthe misfortune of running into Eddie twice to finish 4th, Larry Nelson whowas recovering from recent shoulder surgery and still garnered 7th, andLinda Carter, the tournament director and the only female in thetournament, who was down 3-11, and ending up winning against SamJones, 13-12, (at one point making the last 3 balls with tough banks), tofinish in 7th place.King Cobra Billiards and the Cue Lounge are to be commended in theirfirst joint tournament for adding $1,000 without a full field, and for providinga beautiful trophy and T-shirts. It is a gorgeous place to play and we lookforward to returning for even bigger tournaments. The Cue Lounge would like to announce the addition of 2 weeklytournaments on Sundays and Thursdays, adding $100 with a $10 entryfee ($7 entry, $2 green fee, $1 break pot). Thursdays will be 9-ball at 7pm and Sundays will be 8-ball at 2 pm, both with their own break pots.Call Stacey at the Cue Lounge for more information at 253-872-3477.Watch for King Cobra Billiards $10,000 added Labor Day WeekendTournament.Results:1st Dan Louie $750 + trophy + T-shirt2nd Eddie Carrido 500 + T-shirt3rd Rich Geiler 300 + T-shirt4th Gerry Van Scharrel 2005/6th Marlon Oliveras 100
