Place a dime a quarter to a half inch away from the edge of the rail. The distance depends on the liveliness of the cushion. Place a glass directly behind the dime on the rail. I recommend a double shot glass. A paper coffee cup would also work, but the sound of the coin settling in the glass sounds so much neater than a paper cup. The cue ball is placed on the head spot. Speed is everything on this shot. Shoot straight into the rail with a soft to medium soft stroke.

You can add another element of suspense to this shot by having an audience member call whether the coin will come up heads or tails in the glass.

MR. KIMURA’S 57TH TAKEIf you get real good at this shot you might try putting the glass on another table about 10 feet away. A quarter works best. Lest you think this version is easy, keep in mind that Mr. Yoshikazu Kimura, made this shot on his video Mind-Boggling Trick Shots. However, it

required 57 takes!

Considering it took him this long it might take the average shooter 570 attempts. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Despite a few exceptions, tournament action in Spokane, Wash., has treated Brady Golan well. The Jan. 14-15 open 9-ball tournament at Black Diamond Billiards and Eatery was no exception, though he had to work a little harder for it by coming through the loser’s bracket to win.

Last Labor Day weekend, Golan eliminated Eddie Carrido in the third round of action. The following month, Carrido won the tournament. The two squared off against each other this time for the tournament championship.

In the match for the driver’s seat, Golan let a 3-1 lead slip away as he missed a few shots and struggled with speed control. Carrido commanded the table and took a 6-4 lead. Golan missed a chance to turn the momentum around when he sold out the 9 with Carrido on the hill.In the one-loss bracket, Golan was among other remaining players fighting elimination. In the match to decide fifth place, Stan Tourangeau, who had been ousted by Marvin Nash, started out poorly against Tony Waters, of Moscow, Idaho. Plagued by missed shots and tangled up tables, Tourangeau uncharacteristically fell down as the sharp-shooting Waters ran up a 4-1 lead. Then, Waters whiffed a safety and missed another shot allowing Tourngeau to get his footing and get back in the match, eventually tying it up at 5-5. Tourangeau continued surging and slipped past Waters, 7-5.

Dan Louie, who ended up in the loser’s bracket after a third round, 7-5, run in with Golan, plowed through five rounds in the losers bracket 5-3, 5-3, 5-2, 5-3, to face Tourangeau in the following match. The bad play bug pestered Tourangeau again as he could not get a recent roll and frequently

left himself poorly, resulting in a 3-1 deficit.

Tourangeau worked through the bad play and managed to tie up the score at 4-4. Both players battled safeties and scratched on jump shots. Louie won that game, then broke and ran the next table. Tourangeau reciprocated, staying on Louie’s heels. The shooters see-sawed one rack each until they were hill-hill, when Tourangeau got and early 9, beating Louie, 7-6.

Freshly deposited by Carrido on the one-loss bracket, Golan tried to work out the kinks while Tourangeau heated up. In the first rack, Golan left himself a kick shot on the 6 ball. Despite pocketing the ball, he whiffed a safety on the 7, giving Tourangeau an open shot and eventually a 2-0 lead. On the third rack, Golan made 3 balls on a thunderous break, making for an easy run out. The high-octane offense continued to a 6-3 Golan

lead. After a skirmish of safeties in the next two racks, Golan won 7-4 and got another crack at Carrido.

In the rematch, tied up at 2-2, Carrido missed a crucial attempt at an early nine. Golan ran out the next four racks to a take 6-2 lead. Carrido answered back with a break and run. After Golan scratched on the following break, Carrido appeared to be running out again when an odious 8 ball hung up in the jaw of the pocket, leaving Golan with a walk off, 7-3 win.

In the nightcap, Carrido didn’t waste time taking a 2-0 lead with a run out and an early 9. Despite having intermittent problems with his speed control, Golan ran out the next six racks. After another tedious battle of safeties, Carrido wrestled away a win and cashed in on Golan’s scratch on the break to make it 6-4. After another safety battle, Carrido came away with a ball in hand, but could not finish the table, losing the match 7-4.The tournament was played by Texas Express rules on 9-foot Brunswick Gold Crown tables with Red-Circle cue balls and an alternating break. Entry fee was $40, plus $10 greens fees. The total purse for this tournament was $2,450 with $650 being added. The race was to seven on the winner’s side and to five in the loser’s bracket. When the disqualifying matches end in a payout, the loser’s bracket matches were a race to seven. For questions call (509) 891-8357. Black Diamond Billiards is located at 9614 E. Here is a position situation that challenges intermediate players. You have a fairly thin cut and need to control the cue ball travel either to minimize it or to get it just right. These two drills will help you perfect your technique for such shots.

In Shot 1 the goal is to precisely control the distance from a fairly thin hit. The object ball is right between the side pockets and a diamond out from the intended pocket. The goal is to pocket the ball and take the cue ball successively to distances 1 through 6 going straight up and down the table. I have shown the shot with the angle at about a 60-degree cut but you can make the shotthinner or thicker to change the difficulty.

For distance 1 you want to leave the cue ball right on the end cushion. You may need to use a little draw to slow the cue ball down on this shot. The idea is to play the shot with enough draw so there is still some after the cue ball hits the object ball so the cue ball slows after the collision. If you slow down too much before the collision, the object ball might not make it to the pocket.

Consider the shot OK if you leave the cue ball within a diamond distance of the goal. For distance 2 you need to bring the cue ball back to even with the side pockets and for 3 you want to leave

it on the bottom end cushion. Similarly, shots 4, 5 and 6 are to successively greater distances. Distance 6 is very tough to also keep the cue ball going straight up and down the table -- consider theshot OK if the cue ball stays between the center of the table and the side cushion, which is to say within a diamond of perfect.

To score this drill, take three tries at each distance and give yourself 3, 2 or 1 points for a good shot depending on how many tries it takes you. This drill is one of 170 drills shown on the DVD series I recently made with Dr. Dave Alciatore, the Video Encyclopedia of Pool Practice. For some video previews of drills from that series, go to http://billiards.colostate.edu/normal_videos and scroll down towards the bottom of the page.

Shot 2 is another common situation. You have a thin cut along the cushion and you need to minimize the travel of the cue ball. You want the object ball to barely reach the pocket. Do you have a good feel for “barely pocket” speed? Can you also predict how far the cue ball will go for a slowest- possible shot? The starting position shown is about a 45-degree cut shot. After you get the speed and distance for this try increasing the angle of the cut. Note that if the object ball is closer to or farther from the pocket, less or more speed and consequently cue ball travel will be needed.

Knowledge of the angle-speed-distance relationships on shots like this are essential if you are going to master the minimization of cue ball motion.

ROAD PLAYERS 9-BALLWORK WITH THE MONK,

STEP BY STEP WITH NO RISK FOR $300.00!!!!

WOULD YOU PAY $300.00 TO BECOME A TOP PLAYER IN YOUR TOWN?

On March 24th I am visiting California for a special ONE DAY WORKSHOP in LA at VIP Billiards. Because I get to the heart of this training, I offer a money back guarantee. How many instructors will return your money if you are not happy with the lesson? I always tell my students that there are three things they need to learn about pocket billiards to become a good player. One, There are four strokes in this game we must masterTwo. The stroke determines the track line of the cue ball after making contact with the object ball. Three, The stroke determines the speed of the cue ball. When I help you master the four strokes and show you how to move the cue ball around with the stroke, you have just moved to the next level. You won’t ask for your money back. No one has ever asked for their money back. Then I teach which stroke gives you a better chance to pocket the object ball. There are times when we aim perfectly but miss the shot because we used the wrong stroke. A good nine ball break calls for a specific stroke. Since you cannot deliver a pure stroke without proper mechanics, I help you get into position to make quality contact with the cue ball. In this game it is all about quality of hit. Many instructors try to teach you about the game before you learn how to hit the cue ball. This ruins you for life. You must learn how to hit the cue ball before you move on to game strategy.

If you attend my special California workshop you will master the strokes and then be enrolled in my ROAD PLAYERS TRAINING PROGRAM. This is a sixteen level training program that is designed to help you win more games. Have you ever wondered why there are so few world class players and so many pool players? The reason is skill

development. There are some closely guarded secrets in the game of nine ball. It would take seven years of training to uncover these secrets. Grady says two million balls. The professional player has paid a high price to learn this material and he/she is not going to give it away. In my workshop I supply you with a manual that includes these secrets. That is why I can guarantee my work. You will move to the next level or your money back. I am going to be in California only one time. The class is limited to ten students. I have an assistant Monk Master here to help. Call me if you are interested in joining us. 1-603-566-6229 I apologize if I used this article to promote my stop. I offer you some valuable tips on this great game. I am visiting your area one time so I want you to know about it.

Following my California visit I am going to Manila Philippines to film my special training program. Until we meet in the finals, may all the rolls go your way. The Monk will be at VIP Billiards 20627 Golden Springs Dr., Diamond Bar, CA 91789 with one full day of training featuring THE ROAD PLAYERS NINE BALL TRAINING PROGRAM, MARCH 24th, starting at noon.

Cascade Pool League’s Annual Mid-Season tournament was held at a more central location this year and it paid off with a great turnout! Milwaukie’s River Road House owner and CPL player, Brian Essig, added $520 to the three-division December event. The Road House, which came into the league in 2009, drew players in to play handicapped 9-ball singles, 8-ball singles, and 8-ball scotch doubles over two weekends. The Mid-Season event has long provided CPL players with a high stakes weekend tournament experience and the handicap requires top players to spot games and play at their best to win.Saturday Dec 10th 9 am: Players began to arrive to warm up on the 6 Diamond pool tables for the 10 am start of 9-Ball Singles. The entry fees for the single events were determined by skill level. Open B players paid $8, Open A players $10, and Master players $12. All players also paid a one-time green fee of $5 for all three events. The brackets were drawn up for players and, “Let the games begin!” was announced by Tournament Director Kurt Hamm. In the 1st rounds all the favorite players advanced to the second round. The 1st upset was Open Woman Linda Smith, aka Smitty. She went hill/hill with “tournament player junkie” Ron “the big O” and won the final game, drilling in the 9-ball to advance to the 3rd round. There Smitty met up with Master Shelby Locati. Smitty had to focus to take down this proven player and Shelby showed Smitty that the best defense is not to let her back to the table. Shelby made an extremely difficult cut shot and proceeded to run out the hill/hill game to advance to the 4th round on the winner’s side. Shelby was playing her best at this event and seemed the favorite in this format.Master Andrew Monstis won his 1st match 6-3 against Master Ray Galli, advancing to the next round against the manager of the River Road House, Open A Phil Bremer. Andrew prevailed over Phil Bremer, 6-1. Local Road House favorite, Open A Mike Carpenter, then defeated Andrew 5-2, advancing to the point match against undefeated Shelby Locati. Shelby was still in command as she sent Mike to the Loser’s Bracket 5-3 and won the point. On the Loser’s side, Andrew defeated Ray Galli again 6-2, then beat Tony Dunlap 6-1, and in a revenge match against Mike Carpenter, went hill/hill and won to go into the finals against Shelby for all the bragging rights. At that point it was getting late and both players agreed they were exhausted, so they split the pot, Shelby getting top honors. Payouts were as follows:1st place Shelby Locati, 2nd place Andrew Monstis, splitting $195. 3rd place Mike Carpenter $45. 4th place Tony Dunlap $27. 5th place Aaron Curti $15. 6th place Ray Galli $15 and Top Skill Level players not in the money were Master Steve Copher, Open A Mike Norris, Open B Tommy Millhollin and Woman B player Cherish Carpenter. Each won their entry fees back. The tournament was a huge success and everyone said to thank Road House owner Brian Essig for adding $520 for all three events.

Sunday morning players woke to a cold, crisp, but very sunny day in Portland. They scrambled to get their showers and coffee fix to make the Road House for 10 am start of the 2nd event, 8-Ball singles. Some focused on the breakfast special, while others practiced for the long day of competition. In the 26 player field, Round 1 saw Open A Mike Carpenter upset Master Steve Tune 6-2. Mike then beat Open B Steve Doidge in the 2nd round 4-2. Mike’s 3rd round match was Master John Lewis, a 5-4 race, but that did not stop Mike and he won hill/hill. Mike advanced again, beating strong Open B Steve Farley 4-1, advancing to the point match against his own teammate, Phil Bremer. Phil handed Mike his 1st loss 4-2, but Mike bounced right back from the Losers Bracket to face Phil in the Finals. As it was late, both agreed to flip for the win. Check the photo to see who is holding the money! Results for 8-Ball singles: 1st place Phil Bremer $125. 2nd place Mike Carpenter $75. 3rd place Ron Van Dyke $50. 4th place Steve Farley $30. 5th place Steve Grimes $20. 6th place Aaron Curti $20. 7th place Brock Brisby $15. 8th place Kim Allen $15. Top Skill Level players not in the money were Master Ray Galli, Open A Chris Gattman, Open B Don Morse, and Open Woman Jenny Lewis. Each of those players got their entry fees paid back for their efforts. Signups continued to pour in for the December 17th Scotch 8-Ball event, with 14 teams signed facing off at the 10 am start. The $20 buy-in and the $220 Road House add made the pot $500. The races were determined by skill level as follows: Open Women players 2 pts, Open Men B players 3 pts, Open Men A players and Master Women players 4 pts, and Master Men players 5 pts. The Tournament Director added points of both players and each match race was determined by the difference between both teams. There were two teams with one Master Men and one Open A Men players and their race was 7 games. There were 3 teams with one Open Women and One

Open Men B players and their race was 3 games. There were 4 teams of Open Men A players racing to 6 games, 3 teams of two Open Men B players racing to 4 games, and one team of one Open Men A and one Open Men B players racing to 5 games. In the 1st round the 4-time 8-Ball Scotch Champions from prior years showed the field why they were seeded #1. Their 1st opponents were Jennifer Windell (soon to be Smith) and her fiancé Jeff Smith. The 7-3 race for the #1 seeded team Master player Steve Copher & open A player Tony Dunlap was a perfect match. The race did not seem to bother either player as they won the match 7-0. Their next match was the same 7-3 race playing Linda (Smitty) Smith and her partner Glen Graves from Don’s Dugout Tavern. This time though, Steve and Tony had their work cut out for them as it went hill/hill. Smitty missed a difficult cut shot, giving Steve & Tony the opening they needed to close out the match 7-2. In the 3rd round though, Steve & Tony were given a rude awakening! Two open A players Phil Bremer and Mike Carpenter did not care about the

champions’ past record. They showed them that there were new kids on the block by crushing the pair 6-1, sending them to unfamiliar territory -- the dreaded Losers Bracket! Mike & Phil then faced another strong team in Master player Steve Tune and Open A player Terry Erdman. They traded games back and forth in a close match, but finally broke and ran winning 6-5 and getting to the point undefeated. Steve and Terry were not to go away so easily though, as they won the Losers Bracket and the Finals were set. You could see the Eye of the Tiger in Steve Tune & Terry Erdman as they played with focus and won the 1st match 7-4. The second match was even closer with each team trading games. Finally the bartender came over and said the match was over due to time. The teams were shocked that it was 2:30 am already. The match ended up a tie at 3 to 3 and it was decided to split the pot and for the 1st time in CPL history 1st place went to both teams! Congratulations to both teams and you can be sure they will be back next year to defend their crowns. Tournament Director Kurt Hamm thanks the River Road House for putting on an excellent tournament both weekends and adding $520 into the pot.

The final results are listed below and until next year, “Thank you!” to the CPL pool players for making this another fun event for everyone to enjoy!

1st Place Teams $330: Co-Champions Phil Bremer & Mike Carpenter and Steve Tune & Terry Erdman!!! 3rd Place Team $100: David Avegio & Steve Farley! 4th Place Team $70: Steve Copher & Tony Dunlap!

CPL is currently taking signups for its final session of the year, Spring 9-Ball 3-person teams. This will start mid-March. Contact your Division Manager to sign up by February 25 to guarantee your team entry! As always, prior same-format session teams get first dibs.

The Break Magazine Makes Available Past IssuesSeptember 2000 through February 2012

Some major changes have come to The Break over the years. The original name was On The Break and started publication September 2000. The second issue came out January 2001. The intent at first was to be a quarterly pool publication but quickly changed into a monthly by March of 2001, the format was tabloid. The Break went through some changes with the header and had 8 pages of color in a newspaper format in the beginning. The next change was a full front cover photo. This started December 2004. A short 2 years later, December 2006, saw a newspaper magazine format. In March of 2011 the biggest

change of all came, trimmed and stapled a high gloss full color four page cover was added. And has been published for a year to this issue February 2012. You can read from August 2001 to February 2012 all issues are online at www.onthebreaknews.com/PastIssuesIndex.htm

There are plans to put the remaining early issues online as well. You can see tournaments and results for over a decade. Thousands of results, press releases, league championships, national championships,

product reviews, feature locations and much, much, more. If we had 25 results in each issue times that by 12 months and times that by 12 years you come up with over 3600 articles. During our run, we also counted the number of photos in each issue. I think there was a high of over 80 but more so an average of about 45, so 45 times 12 month times 12 years again will equal some 6500

photos. They included first, second, third and team photos. The Break is the oldest running regional pool magazine in the United States and the world. We here at The Break are committed to making the pool players proud of what we do. To bring to you the very best magazine that we can and we hope to improve in the coming years. We want you to be proud to be a part of The Break’s family. Enjoy reading the past issues and see who you know and how they may have changed. We want to thank

everyone who has helped to make this pool magazine the very best that it can be. Don “Cheese” Akerlow - Publisher

The Seminole Pro Tour would like to thank all of the fans, players, room owners and especially sponsors who have supported the tour through the past five years that the tour has been in existence. It is with great sorrow and lament that the Seminole Tour will not have a season in 2012 and will continue to suspend operations indefinitely. From its small beginnings as a regional tour in South Florida, to its growth as the premier national 10-ball tour in the country, the Seminole Pro Tour has always strived to put the player’s and fan’s interest first. The operations were not munsoned, but rather an executive decision to suspend operations was made. The amount of support that the Tour has had has been overwhelming. The countless correspondence that has been received expressing their support for the Tour has not gone unnoticed. The Seminole Pro Tour and the Seminole Tribe would like to say, “Sho-naa-bish (thank you).” The Tour would especially like to thank a few people specifically. John DiToro, the creator of the original Seminole Pro Tour, is not only one of the best tour directors, but also a wonderful person. It was his vision and dedication that got the Seminole Pro Tour to the heights of the industry. John is a true professional and his work ethic is second to none. Thank you, John. The Seminole Tribe had the pleasure to sponsor a couple of players. Corey Deuel, the Prince of Pool, was a true cornerstone to the betterment of the Tour’s operations. Corey’s professionalism and true love of the game helped the Tour grow leaps and bounds. If not for Corey, the Tour would have never been able to reach the levels that it did. Thank you, Corey. The many sponsors and room owners that helped make the Tour possible are another group of people that were essential to the Tour’s operations. Without dedicated room owners and sponsors, the Tour would have never been able to reach the number of fans all over the country and the world. One

room owner who stood by the Tour through thick and thin has been Rocky McElroy. No matter what the situation, The Tour could always count on Rocky to be there with his support and the support of his pool room, Capone’s. Thank you to all the sponsors, room owners and Rocky. The Tour could not have grown without all of the great players that have honored the Tour by playing in the tournaments. The Seminole Pro Tour was unique in that it allowed average players to play alongside of World Champions. The Tour has seen several great matches and players in each tournament. If the great players would have never supported the Tour, there would have never been a national Tour. Thank you to all players who played in the tournaments. The Tour would like to thank all of the staff and workers who dedicated themselves and sacrificed their time to make sure the Tour ran as smoothly as possible. Gerry Mayen, Tiffany Marquez, Kevin Pickard, Brenda Mello, Bobby Frank, OB Osceola and Elrod Bowers all had their mark on the operations of the Tour. Without their hard work in the office and on the road, the Tour would not have been so successful. Thank you, Seminole Pro Tour staff. Lastly, the tour would like to thank all of the fans who supported the Tour. So many great fans came to see the events all over the country and thousands more watched online through our web streams. The fans are who the Tour was created for and their unconditional support is appreciated. Thank you, fans. The Seminole Tribe of Florida has decided to pursue other operations within the Tribe and therefore will not be considering any further pool-related ventures at this time. TheSeminoleprotour.com website will remain running so the final inventory of merchandise can be sold with extremely reduced prices.

ohn Morra may not be known for his bank pool game, but that will be be a thing of the past as he has won the Derby City Classic Bank Pool event. There were 404 players in the

Banks competition at DCC.

Morra started the event with a fairly manageable draw but that is only half the battle in any tournament. Morra displayed a bank game that many fans were not expecting from him with notable wins over Jerry Matchin, Josh Smith and Josh Oneal in the early rounds. The level of competition picked up after that as Morra rattled off wins against Louie Ulrich,Charlie Bryant and John Brumback to make his way undefeated into round twelve with only three players remaining.

The other two players left at that time were Shane Van Boening and Brandon Shuff. Van Boening had dropped a match to Francisco Bustamante in the 8th round, but had come back with wins over Efren Reyes, Jonathan Pinegarand Alvis Fitch. Shuff had dropped his 7th round match against Truman

Hogue, but had wins over Pinegar, Robb Saez and Danny Smith to compliment a bye in the 10th round.

With three players left in the 12th round, one player would get a bye and fate would smile on Morra as he got to sit out and watch Van Boening and Shuff try to knock each other out of the tournament.

Van Boening eliminated Shuff and got ready for the unenviable task of trying to hand Morra back to back losses.

Shane was up to the task in the first match 3-2, but the second match saw Morra take a 2-0 lead and then at 2-1, take advantage of a number of hung balls by Van Boening to notch a 5-3 win in the final game for the 3-1 win and the

banks title.

VAN BOENING WINS DERBY 9-BALL/ALL AROUND TITLEIn the most dominant performance in Derby City Classic history, Shane Van Boening played in the finals of all three divisions and won two of those divisions. In order to get to the finals, Van Boening had to get by Mike Dechaine in round twelve of the 9-ball division. Dechaine has one of the best tournament records of anyone against Van Boening, but this was not to be another entry in Dechaine’s resume as Van Boening took advantage of careless mistakes by Dechaine and added four table runs to win the match 7-0.With only three players going into that round of play, it was Stevie Moore who caught the bye and had the easy route to the finals. Moore came out early in the final match against Van Boening and proved that he belonged in the finals when he rode a 1-9 combo and a break & run to a 2-1 lead. The lead would be short lived for Moore as Van Boening kicked a two ball in and ran out to tie the match at 2-2. A poore safety by Moore in the fifth rack led to a 3-2 lead for Van Boening and then a very careless safety attempt by Moore in rack six gave ball in hand to Van Boening and he jumped on the opportunity. Van Boening ran that rack and the next two for a 6-2 lead. Moore would add one more bead to his side of the scoreline after winning a safety battle in rack nine, but a dry break in rack ten was Moore’s last time at the table as Van Boening ran out for the 9-ball division win and $16,000 in prize money. As far as the Master of the Table competition, that race was decided very early in the 9-ball division as Shane only had to get out of the third round to lock up the title for the second straight year. John Morra took second in the all around competition and Brandon Shuff finished in third. The Fatboy 10-Ball event finals, as well as the 14.1 finals, are yet to be played. Both of those matches will still take place on Saturday night after the awards ceremony for the main events.

VAN BOENING WINS DERBY ONE POCKETThe One Pocket Division of the 14th Annual Derby City Classic ended the same way it ended last year; with Shane Van Boening pocketing the final ball for the win. Van Boening made his way through a field of 311 other players to defend his title from last year.

The seats were jam packed for Van Boening’s semi final match with another Derby City Classic Favorite, Efren Reyes. That match ended with a lopsided 3-0 scoreline after Shane looked to have Efren right where he wanted him (down 2-0 and 7 - (-1) in the third game). Reyes displayed some of that vintage Reyes magic to get the score back to 7-6 but he ran out of magic dust when an intended two rail bank found Van Boening’s pocket instead of Efren’s.

While that match was going on, 25 year old Joey Gray was getting the maximum enjoyment out of his first Derby City Classic as he defeated Darren Appleton to set up a showdown with Van Boening in the finals.

The first rack of the finals was a quick 5-minute tussle as Van Boening made a ball off of Gray’s break, but could only manage three balls before leaving a ball in the jaws and watching Gray run eight for the game.

The second game included some classic one pocket safety play, but Van Boening came with tough shots to take control for small runs. At 5-0, Van Boening back cut a ball into the heart of his pocket and left two gimmes to end the rack 8-0.

Shane made a ball after Joey’s break again in rack three - but then missed a ball in the rack - leaving what looked like a completely open table for Gray. The youngster from Oklahoma City could only manage a run of four balls before missing a small window of shape. From there, the game looked a lot like the previous game with Gray playing some great one pocket shots and Van Boening patiently waiting for a shot before fearlessly making the shot and running balls. Van Boening put three different short runs together for an 8-4 win.

The fourth rack started out with a safety battle that left Shane “ahead” (-1) - (-2). Once again, Gray appeared to out-move Van Boening but ended up eventually leaving a shot and Van Boening took full advantage. A double kissed attempt to clear Shane’s pocket by Gray left an opening for Shane and he quickly ended the game and match with a 9 ball run for his second straight one pocket crown and what appears to be a hammerlock on the all around title.Master

At the 8th annual One Pocket Hall of Fame banquet, Tuesday, January 24th, 2012, we honored this year’s inductees for One Pocket, Buddy Hall and ‘San Jose Dick’ Mc Morran, and one of our very few repeat inductees, as Nick Varner is honored for Bank Pool this year, after having been inducted for One Pocket back in 2005.

We looked forward to welcoming Grady Mathews on the other side of the podium, as health issues

are forcing him to take a break from his usual role of hosting our Hall of Fame evening as one of our Masters of Ceremonies. This year we turned the tables on Grady and treated him to some well deserved living legend recognition and roasting for all that he has done for us, and for this great game of ours over the years.

As these great players were honored by their peers, their friends, their family and their fans we all had an evening that guaranteed a rollicking good time!

ONE POCKET HALL OF FAMECELEBRATING THE LEGACY OF POOL IN ACTION

Francisco Bustamante ended his 2012 Derby City Classic with a lopsided 15-5 victory over Stevie Moore in the finals of the Fatboy 10-Ball Challenge.

Held immediately following Moore’s loss in the finals of the Derby City 9-ball division, the match saw Moore appearing to be off of his game while Bustamante had no such problems. Bustamante held an early 2-0 lead and only a scratch on the 10-ball in rack three kept him from a 3-0 lead. Moore came back to tie the score at 2-2 and was close at 3-4 down before Bustamante found the zone and rolled off nine straight games for an insurmountable 13-3 lead.

Moore took a break at 13-3 down when Bustamante broke dry, which seemed to take Bustamante out of the zone more than it helped Moore get into the zone. The players swapped racks until the score was 14-5 Bustamante, and Moore threw in the towel after a scratch on the break in the 20th rack.

Bustamante earned $12,000 for the win, while Moore settled for $7000 in prize money. John Morra and Alex Pagulayan both pocketed $3,500 each for third place.

Lucky Plays the Pescado GrandeLucky #14

3rd part of this adventure continued from last 2 months …… Crackkkk there was that sound again. Couple of games and we were “in the money” Lucky had again laid down the same break all the even balls went in the holes. Pescado Grande was constantly on the phone. Finally turned off his phone, Bet it was his girlfriend he was arguing with calling him. It was too late for Pescado Grande Lucky finished off the set and the money was ours. Time too quit………..The Mystery man who put up the $20,000 wanted to go again. His nose was open blaming Pescado Grande babe girlfriend for his temporary demise. They were not done. We have been up for almost two days hard on me it had to be harder on Lucky. We want a break Lucky said. The Bank of America was now open. Lucky had me meet him in the Office where the safe was and get our money out of the safe. Lucky said to give him the money. We stuffed it in his coat and pants pocket anywhere we could put it that would not be obvious. He said he would be right back. He went over the Bank and deposited the money except what we would need. Still a lot. When Lucky came back he said the Bank said that he brought in more money then they had on hand. They were likely expecting a shipment of cash from the main branch to conduct business with. That how banks work…Pescado Grande still looked pretty good considering they just played 18 hours. Lucky said he wanted to play but not at this moment. Needed a couple of hours. The guy showed us more five hundred dollar bills. I was wandering where someone got that many of those McKinley’s as they are rarely in circulation. I know better then to ask how he came by those bills. but the bank didn’t question them being counterfeit at the deposit. We agreed to meet at 9pm that would give everyone time to rest. We went and got a motel room. Slept until 7pm got ready then got a bite to eat on the way. I had Roast pork loin and rice pilaf and some steamed greens, corn bread and glass of milk. Lucky had baked fish the same flavorful greens I had but he had the senior portion. We both had coffee as we talked about what was going to happen. Everybody by now knew we were there but who Lucky was also a mystery and we wanted to keep it that way. Lucky was more concerned now about the money. It would attract a criminal element. We

took our time we did not want to be on an advertised schedule because it could make us more vulnerable. So I went in first and surveyed the place did see new faces including a known players like Jose Parica. I told the principle people that Lucky was on his way he in traffic. He was waiting in the car for my phone call. Lucky was stalling it was now 10pm some people waiting to sweat the match were starting to leave, Some thought Lucky was afraid of big money and skipped out with what he won. I assured the Mexican and the mystery man he was in traffic and on his way. I did lie a little, but it was for security reasons. Lucky was packing some real money. All of a sudden we all noticed that Lucky was sitting in the bleachers watching us talk. Popped out of thin air…Oh I’ve been there for a while he said. I am ready to play are you guys. Pescado Grande says, “Of course, my friend.” Jack it to $3000 a game ok! Thought we were playing One Pocket but it was 9ball. They set down equipment at the same table the backer came up and brought out the McKinley’s again. We were in ACTION BABY. This was so exciting. Lucky won the lag. Crackkkk there was that sound again. It’s incredible how he only makes the even balls on this break. I know he’ll explain it to me some time later. Lucky went right to work running out rack after rack each break looked exactly the same each and every time. The old man still has it.Lucky allowed the games to go back and forth again, putting everyone watching asleep. I got some water for Lucky, they did not have Lucky’s favorite water Fuji water he took a sip of what I got him, he said Fuji is the best. I am ready, while every body was thinking another long match they were paying less attention. Pescado Grande broke and scratched, Lucky adjusted his cinnamon stick went on to5 straight effortless run outs and $30,000 more in sight towards Lucky’s goal, Lucky looks at the stunned group who were now paying attention again and says, “If I miss a ball in the next five games, I will start all over… at zero any side bets.” I know they want to do this. Who wouldn’t? Then Lucky whispers, “get all the side bets possible”. What are they going to say? Nothing said for the longest moment. Lucky waits patiently, working the cinnamon stick. The look on their faces -- I can see each and every brain working

overtime, eventually coming out with the answer -- Play the odds. No one runs out that much! The old man is loco I heard A good bet. I got a pencil and note pad and took names and amounts. Some bet $20 and few bet over $200. about 15 people bet some reaching into their socks pulling out the cash. I made them post it to, which I held on too if they wanted to bet.Pescado Grande says, “Of course, my friend.” Doubting Lucky’s ability and bet $200 and mystery backer bet $500. over two thousand collected here we go..On the next game Lucky makes the 9 on the break. Something he never did for the past 2 days. Pescado Grande racks Lucky breaks another 9ball….. three in a row Lucky pockets the nine in a different pocket each time. Pescado Grande racks the game. Lucky breaks and makes the nine in the side. Pescado Grande racks goes to his chair, reaches for his cue case, opens it, unscrews his stick and puts it away. Lucky breaks anyway and pockets the nine in his breaking corner. It took less then 60 minutes. The entire crowd just sits there amazed, and then, slowly, one by one, they begin to applaud realizing what just happened. It was just like hypnotist who brings people out of a hypnotic trance. Though they are frustrated at knowing they just got beat out of their money by an old man who bested their man as well, still they are compelled spontaneously to show respect for what they know is the best pool playing they will ever see. I had tears in my eyes. I still have the money stuffed in my pocket too. We are going to get out alive, I think. Lucky looks at me and smiles wearily, as he acknowledges the respect by shaking everyone’s hand, saying, “Muchas gracias, amigos.” Only one will not shake Lucky’s hand – the backer, who is too stunned that his horse has lost, and is already heading out the door, the pulse in his neck pounding and his cheeks burning. Lucky bought round for all there. We pack up quickly and head out/ slipped

while everyone was feeling goodIn the car and safe Lucky talked about what we might do this next year maybe Derby City, other hot spots in the country and possibly Asia and Europe he did say depending on his health. He was into it for sure, like the old days he said. We headed to the airport so I could get home for Christmas. Lucky said he needed to do some important things, seems mysterious, that he does this every year at Christmas time. His beard was getting longer too….no …no way he could be…no.. We went to the airport I got my bags out of the car. I was to keep all the side bet money. He said he’d be fine driving home dropped me off I went in bought an airline ticket. In the plane have relived it in my mind so many times what happened my brain hurts. It’s one thing to be there watching it happen, but to realize that old Lucky had just played his game, and it was something only a very few would ever be privileged to see, and I was one, well, it is just too much.I’m back home now, doing all the normal stuff you do at home. My wife and I are enjoying getting in some Christmas stuff and ready for the New Year It’s nice being home. Being on the road with Lucky for so long is hard. Life on the road is more grueling than people think. It transforms you to some degree to the environment and the people. How you start out can easily change into something other than what you are expecting. Lucky said that when we first met. He was so right. But it sure was the experience of a lifetime. I know I will be there to help him out if I can, and look forward to going along for the ride, wherever that might be. I am waiting for Lucky to call when he is ready for the road again…….Lucky stories can be found at “On The Break” website, look them up……copyright 2012 by Andrew Monstis

Blind Draw 9-BallOGDEN, UTThe January 7th 2012 Blind Draw Scotch Double 9 Ball Tournament presented by D&R Spirits has wrapped up. The blind draw made for some tough teams with many of the top of Utah in attendance. The patrons watching were provided with some stellar pool from the players. The event was ran by Jackie Tucker, and as always, we need to thank Desi and D&R Spirits for all the food, fun and added money! You can find

these results, and more pool info @ www.utahpoolevents.com.The teams battled all day, and several matches were hill/hill. Preston Ernst and Carl Christensen took down the event with a great performance all day, as they were never defeated. They played Eddie Payne and Lee Sosa in the finals. Tarzan Painter and Robert Randall placed third, with Rick Jensen and Dicky Martinez taking fourth, who beat local standouts Tommy Baker and his partner John Amos.

I want to thank everyone again

for coming out. I look forward to next years hopefully it will be just as good.

We would also like to thank our sponsors Oasis bar, Bannock Music, Watkins Distributing, and Todd Palmer with Roadplayerpool.com.

We offer a National Ranking system at napaleagues.com where you can look up your Ratings as well as complete Game History up-to-date within 48 hours of your match finishing.

NAPA has 3-4-5 player formats in 8ball, 9ball, and 10ball. The league offers Double Play of 2 of any of the Game Formats. We offer a Laggers Choice Format as well. In this format who ever wins the Lag has the choice to break or game of 8, 9 or 10 ball. In this Laggers Choice format if you are a national Qualifier with at least 5 matches in the game of your choice, in a calendar year, you choose your Game at Nationals.

Nationals will be held in Nashville Tennessee, June 24-July 1. If you win your Playoff in any division, you qualify for Nationals. You can qualify for singles nationals held on a team by qualifying as team captains with no less than 3 forfeits in a session or if you are Top Point Scoring Player on your Team. Top Point Scoring Player in each Division gets a bonus and the Top Breaker, and Break n Runner get a bonus as well.

NAPA has a national singles format Tournament for 6 different rating groups. Master Class 90+Class A 70-89Class B 50-69Class C 30-49Class D 10-29Class E 0-9

CSI Supports BCAAs a long time member of the Billiard Congress of America (BCA), CSI supports the BCA in their recently announced pro pool initiative to provide funds to send North American players to international events. CSI is one of the first industry leaders to support the BCA initiative as a “2012 Official Contributor to International Competition.” A solid framework for both North American and world professional pool has long existed, with the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) as the world body, and the BCA as the WPA member for North America. CSI commends the BCA on their commitment renewal as the “Governing Body for Cue Sports in North America.” CSI supports the BCA as the governing body, its pro points program, and the player selection process for international events. With a decline in US player participation in world events, the time has come to change the structure of how pro pool in North America is supported. This is a great step in building that structure which will allow the top US and Canadian players to continue to compete and represent their countries internationally. CSI, which produces the “US Open 10-Ball Championship,” one of the BCA pro point events, believes the future and strength of the sport lies in creating a synergy between the industry, the amateurs, the professionals,

and the general public. Two years ago CSI launched the USA Pool League with that goal in mind, and a portion of CSI’s proceeds from the USAPL is pledged to promote and fund pro awareness. We at CSI encourage industry support of the BCA in their new endeavor. In the past, CSI partnered with five other industry leaders to help support and fund the BCA Hall of Fame. It is time for all organizations that have the sport and industry foremost in mind to band together in support of the BCA. CueSports International (CSI) is dedicated to creating more choices for all players. In the past seven years CSI has directly paid out approximately seven million dollars to players. CSI is the parent company of the BCA Pool League and the USA Pool League. CSI also produces independent events such as the US Bar Table Championships, the Jay Swanson Memorial, the US Open One Pocket Championship and the US Open 10-Ball Championship. Visit www.playcsipool.com, www.playbca.com and www.playusapool.com for more information about CSI and its divisions. CSI leads the billiard industry in the development of technology. DiabloValleyPoolLeagueThe Diablo Valley Pool League successfully finished their casual summer session with

their 23 teams and a blind, completing their 26 week commitment. This was a singleround event. The league started 07/05/2011 and ran until 12/27/2011. It also generated a payout of $20,000 dollars which went back to all the players. The handicap of 150% appears to be working just right, since the top teams keep winning and the middle of the road teams have to work even harder to carry the handicap when they have to give up balls to newer teams.Let us take a second to congratulate again Vinnie’s #3 team composed of the top of the top when it comes to playing pool in our local area. Captained by Holly Robinson and with a roster of veteran’s such as Robbie Lyng, Jason Williams (Top Shooter), John Lentini, George Williams. As a reminder last year this same team took 1st place on the last position round from Aljoe’s team - Bar none. They were forced to win from 4 to 5 rounds for the last 3 weeks of league, to be able to get close to the then first place team, Erin’s team who only needed ½ round to clinch 1st could not get it. They took home $2576.The Clayton Bowl #17 team lead by Erin McKibben (Captain), and joined by Matin Sherzai, Alex Baraquil and Dave Gomez stayed on top of the Vinnie’s group and were only ahead of them half of round. Congratulations to this group they managed to get 2nd place in the overall standings. Their cash price was $2150.To everyone’s surprised this next group came out of nowhere….and held onto that third and 4th place spot for many weeks. No secret top guns…just regular competitive group of men and women who take pool very serious and love to compete and do their best at every chance they get. Congratulations to the Diablo Lanes #11 group lead by Jess Quinata and joined by Cony Mendoza, Jason Kung, Tiffany Walker, Gary Melanson, and Alex Almendral. They took no victims, they took every round possible and didn’t let go of their 3 point lead from the fourth place team Bar None #14 led by Aljoe Mandoriao. They won $1800 for their efforts.Top male place went to Jason Williams, one of the best, if not the best in the area. The top female place went to Leslie Bernardi, another local veteran whose game speaks for itself.Let’s also take a moment to mention all of our sponsors because without them we wouldn’t be as strong of a league as we are today. Thank you to Vinnie’s Bar, ClaytonBowl, Diablo Lanes, Bar None, Cue’ N Brew, Farrington’s Bar, Scores Bar, The office Lounge, Cj’s Bar, Rack Em Up and WPLJ’s.As DVPL continues to support and promote bar box game while running several leagues such as Open-Mix, women’s league, scotch doubles 8 and 9 ball and getting ready to start a single 9 ball league, they have decided to take a break from running their local Friday night tournament out of Vinnie’s Bar. Cony and Tina Mendoza have been running the Friday night action in Concord for the last 15 years, between the Magoo’s Friday night and then Vinnie’s bar. Special thanks to the Sponsor Parker and to the many regulars who for years attended this tournament. The last tournament was held on Friday January 13. We had a turn out of 30 players; Jeanne the manager from Vinnie’s bar cooked her regular delicious dish for $5 dollars and the standings were:

Jason Williams $130Rich Chudy $105Kristin Eisen $65+top girl $45Doug Woo $35The Dave Piona Memorial Tournament will continue to be run by DVPL out of Vinnies Bar keeping Dave’s memory alive amongst friends, family and fellow poolplayers. Thank you Kresten for acknowledging all our efforts.
