13th Annual Western BCA Regional 8-Ball ChampionshipsTops $100,000 Payout; 1220 playersLincoln City Oregon is a beautiful place to visit - especially for 1,220Western BCA pool players, arriving for the best regional pool tournamentin the country! The blue waters of thePacific Ocean matched the blue felt on 80Diamond tournament tables, and ChinookWinds Casino and Resort once again wasalive with pool players and their entourage.Players loved the Diamonds and the redcircle cue balls. Fifteen separate tournaments were contested, with payoutstopping $100,000 for the first time in the 13-year history of this event. ScotchDoubles started on Monday evening, Singles events started Wednesdaymorning and Team events started on Friday evening. By 10:30 PM Sundaynight the last ball had been struck. Between Monday evening and Sundaynight tens of thousands of games had been played and champions hademerged. Old-timers and newcomers alike were excited to be in such agreat environment for pool. There was something for every skill level andmany new players were caught examining the veterans in action, looking

for those skills that make pool such a great game. Where else can yousee the old, the young, the handicapped, the rich and the poor all cometogether to compete against each other? Pool is a sport for the massesand Western BCA tournaments at Chinook Winds have become the ‘big

show’ for pool in the Northwest. When an event gets to be the size of theseRegional 8-Ball Championships, thingschange. The big change this year wasusing Diamond tables and red circle cueballs, but one other change was the filming

of finals by OTBntV. All of the finals of the Masters’ events were filmed andare viewable on OTBnTV (www.otbntv.com) on the Western BCA VideoMagazine. There are also photo galleries and some interviews with winnersand other players. Check it out - Cheese did a fantastic job. OTBnTV alsodonated a Predator Poison Cue which was given away to Teresa Palmer,Cherry City League. Also, professional photographer Dave Schelske tooknumerous close-up photos and room shots at the championships. Hisphotos can be viewed and purchased at www.westlinnstudios.com.

One of theadvantagesof going tom a j o rtournamentsis that in thetimes betweenmatches youget to swapshots withother “shotco l l ec to r s . ”Here are twotough shots

that were discussed at the recentDerby City Classic that can be usedfor practice or as challenge shots. In Shot A, the goal is to bank the objectball cross-side. The problem is thatthere is an almost sure kiss in the shot. The setup is critical but pretty easy. Theobject ball is even with the diamondclosest to the side pocket and one ball-space off the cushion. The cue ball ison the spot. (If the spot is pitted, movethe cue ball towards the object ball alittle or use the other end of the table.Your first problem is to decide whetheryou want to try to “cross” the ball, whichmeans to hit it on the left side and makethe cue ball cross the path of the balland get out of the way before the objectball comes off the rail. The other wayis to try to “stiff” or “pinch” the objectball. Usually this is done by shooting

the shothard or playing withleft side spin on the

cue ball. I won’t reveal the way I likeuntil the end of the column, so stopreading now if you want to find yourown way first. In Shot B the challenge is to cut theobject ball straight into the pocket. Both the cue ball and the object ballare even with the first diamonds fromthe corner pocket. The shot lookspretty tough when you’re down on it,but a not-so-hard, smooth stroke willdo it. With the correct speed, if thecue ball misses the object ball, it willgo a total of three table lengths. Mostplayers start out hitting the shot toohard. This is the sort of shot you may needto warm up to. Start with an easiershot — put the cue ball at A. If youcan make it three times in a row fromthere, move to B, and so on, until youget to the diagrammed position. Ifyou have too much trouble even withposition A, move the cue ball out tothe line and see how thin a shot youcan achieve.Shot B is a good one for yoursnooker-like stance. See if gettingyour chin almost on the cue stick, oreven rubbing on the cue stickimproves your accuracy.OK, time for the spoiler. In Shot Athe way that works best is to play withsome left english and a hair of drawand hit the object ball nearly full.Don’t hit the ball too hard or theenglish won’t take as well. This is a

shot that fools a lot of players.

I just got off the phone with BillSchick who gave me the followinginformation about this cue and it’scurrent condition.Don Wagner and Bill Schick werefriends for more than 30 years. Thisfriendship started beforeBill even started makingcues. According to Mr.Schick, him and Donpurchased cues fromFrank Paradise together in1965, and the cue picturedthroughout this post wasthe cue that Donpurchased at that time. When their cues wereready for pick-up theywent down to Franks shopand picked up their cuestogether. While Don lovedhis cue in all respects, Billwas not as happy with his.At the time Bill hadpurchased a lower endParadise, and Don hadopted for a High EndFancy model. Now according Bill this incident wasgreatly responsible for his desire tobuild cues. Now when Bill wastelling this, all I could say is WOWthis exchange changed history, andit created one of the most highlyrespected cue makers in thiscountry today, who still builds hiscues by hand with no CNCMachinery. The cue pictured herein this thread was part of thatheritage, and this pedigree is veryhard if not impossible to top.According to Bill this cue was aSpecial Paradise Model “D” BlackZephyr due to the extra inlays andwork, and the point constructionwas done by Paradise not, BurtonSpain. Bill told me that he had goneto Franks shop on a number ofoccasions, and actually watchedPoints being milled in Franks shop, and that the points in this cue weremade in Franks shop. All the Mother Pearl inlays in this cuewere part of the originalconstruction with the exception ofthe Boxed Pearl inlays that wereinlay-ed when the cue wasrefinished by Bill Schick. One inlaysays Wagner after the cues owner, and the other says Holdem who wasDon’s Pit Bull Dog, and accordingBill, this dog kinda smiled and hada wounderful disposition for this typeof dog.Classic cues made a comment

A Post From ...that the butt of the cue including thebutt cap appeared to have beenreplaced. According to Bill around1970, Don decided that he wantedweight added to the cue. The cuewas taken to Danny Jane’s and Bill

Stroud at Joss customCues where weight wasadded, the Butt cap wasreplaced, and the wordsNO-TE-APRES wereadded under the windowabove Franks trade mark. The NO-TE-APES namecame from the fact thatDon was a retired AirForce Officer. One daywhile Don and Bill werelooking at some photo’s ofold planes from WWII theysaw a plane from theFlying Tiger Squadronwith this name painted onthe planes nose. Thewords mean HAVE-NO-FEAR and due to hisprofession and being a

Pool Player that name was chosenfor that cue. KV at Classic cues alsosaid that he thought the cue shouldhave fancy inlays in the butt like theForearm. However, according to BillSchick the cue did not ever have afancy butt, and he was there whenthe cue was picked up from Frank. The only modifications from thetime the cue left Franks shop arethose listed above. Many thanks to Bill Schick, whosememory is fantastic, and who wasgracious enough to spend an hourwith me talking on the phone thismorning about this cue and his verygood friend “CAPP”.To all that have posted thanks verymuch, it has been a pleasuresharing this information with theforum. Hopefully in the nextPublication that covers Famous cuemakers some of the informationmay be corrected. While BurtonSpain may have made some pointBlanks for Frank Paradise due tothe large number of orders that hewas receiving before his death healso made his own blanks in hisshop. For those who dispute this orare not sure if this occurred all I cansay is contact Bill Schick, as far asI am concerned his word on thissubject is as good as GOLD in theBank.Have a great day, Craig Rittel, FullSplice Billiards

On Saturday and Sunday, March 22-23, 2008, American Legion Post #129in Oak Harbor, WA, hosted its annualPartners 8-Ball Tournament, awarding $3,455 in prize money. The tournament was played on 5 - 4x8tables, all located at the AmericanLegion Hall. As experienced lastmonth in the Teams 8-Balltournament, having all the play at theLegion, instead of farming matchesout to other taverns around town likewe used to do, made the entiretournament run much more smoothly, and also meant a decent increase tothe Legion Post’s profitability.26 out of the 28 teams that signed up,for a total of 52 players, showed upfrom, as usual, as far south as Tacoma, WA, and as far north as BritishColumbia. This was one team more than turned out at the same time lastyear, and 6 places were paid! Once again, $500 was added, instead of the

$200 previously historically added, to the prize fund by the Legion. As was done for last month’s tournament, a Legion Post member donatedthe money necessary to cover all “greens fees” for the entire weekend. Inthe future, modest “greens fees” will be assessed from the players to coverthe income that would normally be earned by the tables if they are notopened up to “free” play.As an example, with this year’s 26 teams, there were a total of 51 possiblematches, including the “if-necessary” final. In a race-to-7, averagetournament match length can be expected to be 11 games (min. of 7, max.of 13 — skewed to one game more than median due to level of competition). This yields an expectation of about 561 total games played in the course ofthe tournament. At $0.50 per game (yes, our coin-ops are STILL set at$0.50 out here in the boondocks!), this adds up to about $280.50 in expectedtotal tournament income from the tables, had they been closed to acceptcoins.

26 teams means there are 52players. The total income of $280.50divided by the total number of 52players gives an estimated “greensfee” of $5.39 per player. This is whyit was written in last month’s wrap-upthat, after this tournament, theAmerican Legion would be lookinginto charging “greens fees” in theneighborhood of $5-6, or possiblymore, depending upon the specifictournament circumstances.Whatever is done will result in a minor, but universally-practiced, impositionupon the players, offset with a majorimprovement of tournamentconditions in mind. This year, partners Tommy Sliva and

Eddie Mataya of Federal Way were pretty much the story of the wholetournament. After surviving a very stiff challenge and barely escaping witha 7-6 win in their first match of the tournament, Tommy and Eddie blazedtheir way through the rest of the tournament. Although they had severalstrongly contended matches along the way, the opportunities and scoresseemed to fall mainly to Tommy and Eddie, with final match resultsappearing somewhat lop-sided. What can you say? Tommy and Eddiesimply played a great and COMPLETE tournament!2nd Place went to LT and Allen Hanson of Tacoma, who were, simply put,the survivors after all of the dust settled between the 3-4 real contenders toget back into the Championship match. LT and Allen wrangled their waythrough quite a few very tight matches throughout the tournament on theirtrek back toward the top.Winding up in 3rd Place were Jim Conway and Lance Bauge (Lance arrivedin Oak Harbor hot off of a big individual championship just last week in theOpen Division of the huge annual western BCA 8-Ball event at Lincoln City,OR — Congrats, Lance!) of the Soundview Bar & Grill, Everett, WA. Jimand Lance narrowly averted disaster in a hot and intense battle againstCody Clark and Miguel Morfin, coming from being down 5-6 to win thematch 7-6, to advance to the playoff for 4th Place. Much of Jim and Lance’splay, especially in the later matches, was marked with persistent, patientand excellent safety play, and then getting the run-out done when the tablewas set and the right opportunity came.A breath of fresh air, in 4th Place, were Gary Reeves and Rick Fraser ofBritish Columbia. They both said it had been more than 10 years sincethey had ventured south of the border to play in a big tournament. Theywere both pretty upbeat and pleasant characters and played quitecomfortably and very well in the Canadian style of pool we have allconsistently seen in such tournaments — wide-open, attacking everysituation, great accuracy and risk-taking on unusual shots which, quite abit more often than not, produced the intended beneficial result. And finally, tieing for 5th and 6th Places were Cody Clark and Miguel Morfinof the Skagit Valley Area, WA, along with Larry Binschus (Burlington, WA)and Mike Keife (Bellingham, WA).Our gratitude goes to Chuck Hassler, who organized the tournament, andto the staff at the American Legion, most of whom were volunteers, for

Photos and article courtesy of azpoolscene.comIn the eight years that the Northvs. South Cactus CupChallenge has been played, never before has there been afinish like what took placeduring this years challenge. The 2008 Cup started at MainStreet Billiards in Tucson onSunday, March 2nd. The Southsquad jumped to an early leadwhen their (10) rated players,Dave Capone & KevinPeterson, both won over theNorth's Tyson Cole & TresKane.Next up in Tucson were the (6) rated players. The North's Jodie Villegas & Lance Smyth bothwon over the South's Abby Bentley & ChrisAmadori to even the score at 2-2. The (7) ratedplayers were next. The North's Jim Pennington defeated NickyHayashi (S) while the South's John Wellsdefeated the North's Mark Nelson. The scorenow stood at 3-3 until the South won the ScotchDoubles match between the (7's) to take a 4-3lead. From this point forward the Southdominated by winning every match played therest of the day. The (8's) and the (9's) from theSouth, Tim Christopher, Jim Bentley, RicardoCamarena, and Andy Kucher all won creating ahuge 8-3 lead after leg #1. The North was in thebiggest hole they had ever experienced in theeight years of the Challenge. Leg #2 would takeplace the following Sunday on the North's homecourt at Alexander's. The North would definitelyhave their work cut out for them on March 9th.On March 9th, the North started leg #2 by playingtheir six rated players who had both won theprevious week in Tucson. Both North 6's wonagain. Jodie Villegas & Lance Smyth defeatedthe South's Chris Amadori & Russ Hopkins. These two North wins narrowed the overall gap

would once again give the South the 2008 Cup.Sure enough the North pulled it out and the Cupwas still up for grabs. The overall score at thispoint was 11-10 South. The only rating left toplay in the 2nd and last leg of the challenge werethe seven rated players. The South's John Wells defeated the North's TonySpade to give the South a two point lead at 12-10. The other (7's) match was the North's SaraMiller playing the South's Nicky Hayashi. A winby Nicky in this match would once again closethe North out. It did not happen. Nicky got on thehill but Sara battled back and won the match hill/hill. That win kept the North alive again. Theover all score now stood 12-11 South. The mathwas simple from here. If the South won thescotch match between the 7's, the 2008 Cupwould be theirs for only the second time in eightyears. If the North could win this match, theoverall score would be tied and the tie breakerwould have to be played. In a nail biter, the Northfell behind again 6-4 in the race to seven. TheSouth was one game away from the Cup whilethe North needed three games to force the tie.Sure enough Sara and Tony fought back to eventhe match hill/hill then won the match when Tonysnapped the nine on the hill/hill game to finally, after two weeks of play, get the North even overallat 12-12.This was the first time in eight years that theChallenge ended in a tie. As decided years agoby the North captain Ron Merseal and the South

captain Bob Jackson, any tie would be broke byplaying one more match with both captains

to 8-5. The North matched up the 10's next.Tyson Cole (N) lost to the South's Kevin Petersonwhile the North's Tres Kane fought back from ahuge hole in his match against Dave Capone tokeep the South's lead to just three points, 9-6.The South 10's then defeated the North's 10's inscotch doubles to take a 10-6 lead. At this pointit did not look real good for the North team. Withthe North in trouble and facing must wins to stayalive, the North's Bernie Store and SusanWilliams both won over the South's Olivia

Jackson and TimC h r i s t o p h e r .These two hugeNorth winsbrought the Northback with-in twopoints.The over-allscore nowstood at 10-8,South.The North puttheir 9's up next.Pete Gresh Sr. &

Brandon Butler would be playing the South'sRicardo Camarena & Andy Kucher. Brandon lostto Ricardo to increase the South lead to threepoints, 11-8. Pete fell behind in his match to Andy.A loss by Pete would have given the South a fourpoint lead and the North would have beenmathematically eliminated. Pete, however, cameback and won over Andy hill/hill. The North wasstill alive but still behind, over-all, 11-9.The North 9's would haveto play a ScotchDoubles match againstthe South 9's. A loss bythe North in this match

Like Teachinga New Trick to a Dog

Samm Diep (c) March 2008And no, I’m not referring to “teaching an old dog new tricks.” That’s a differentarticle.About three years ago, I was teaching Vegas, mywhite lab, to “wave” on command. Following theguidance of a book full of doggy tricks I hadpurchased, I could sort of get him to do it. Hestruggled a bit, gave me that tilted-head lookof confusion, and just tried to get the treat frommy hand. We worked on it for about 45minutes and I just let him go play. The next evening, I called him over, hadhim sit in front of me, and along withthe waving hand gesture, I said,“wave.” Well, low and behold, on hisvery first attempt, he was waving.Without any assistance from me at all,he had remembered everything weworked on and was waving on hisown. Nowadays, all I have to do is make the hand gesture and a little whitepaw comes creeping up.Not to compare us with dogs, but I couldn’t help noticing an uncanny parallelafter a difficult practice session the other day. I’d recently been strugglingwith my stroke hand inadvertently inching slightly back on my cue whenever

my adrenaline starts pumping. I don’talways notice it when it’s happening.I just notice something feels a little offand I miss the shot.On Monday afternoon, I had a threehour practice session where, beforeevery single shot, I checked myperpendicular to make sure my handwas in the correct spot. Initially, it feltso awkward, like I was way too farforward. I didn’t care. I forced myselfto shoot it anyway. Most of the time, Iwould make the shot. Sometimes, Iwas so flustered I would screwsomething else up.I struggled. Admittedly, I wasfrustrated. I felt so inconsistent andwasn’t even sure if I was making anyprogress at all. I finished my practicefeeling a bit deflated and left with mytail between my legs.

On Tuesday night, I screwed my cues together, determined to get to thebottom of this. As usual, I threw some balls out and just stroked someshots in to warm up; with some big powerful strokes. It was like a miracle.Everything I was forcing myself to so consciously do the day before wasall happening on its own. I could see the shots. My stance and stroke handall fell right into place. It was effortless.I was thrilled. I had made progress. Forcing myself to the brink of madnessthe day before wasn’t all for nothing. Like Vegas, I had successfully learneda new trick. I absorbed as much as I could on the first day and when I gavemyself a break and returned to the table refreshed, it all sunk in.PLEASE BE SURE TO VISIT POOLTIPJAR.COM. Effective May 5th, 2008, United Airlines and US Airways will begin chargingdomestic passengers an additional $25 to check a second piece of luggage.Exceptions to this rule: if you are flying first class or are part of their most-frequent-flier programs. This charge is anticipated to generate an additional$75 to 100 million in revenue and cost savings each year. These are the only two airlines that have currently jumped on the bandwagonthus far but we’ll just have to see who follows. This comes as a bad timefor pool players as it’s just before Nationals in Vegas. What does this mean for pool players?Well, if you don’t already own one, you may want to consider investing in alarger piece of luggage that is long enough to carry your pool cues andclothes altogether. Caution, however, most airlines have a 50 pound weightlimit and it’s really easy to exceed that with all the extra room andweight from our cues/case.For a wide selection of over-sized travel bags, visit SammsPocket.com.

Combining opportunities to challenge top pros with a pool raffle put $2,300in the Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) coffers at last week’s HopkinsSuper Billiards Expo. The fundraiser was made possible by the generousdonation by Brunswick Billiards for the pool table raffle, a booth courtesy ofExpo producers Dawn & Allen Hopkins, and pro players who providedexciting challenge matches.Professional billiard players donating their time to assist in the charitychallenge were: Artistic Pool Masters Championship participants AndySegal, Bruce Barthelette and Tim Chin; WPBA Pro Players: Ga YoungKim and Allison Fisher; and UPA Pro Players: Mika Immonen, Mike Jackson,Raj Hundal and Tim Hill.Several volunteers assisted BEF to make this a successful fundraiser:Bob Hess, Martyne Backman and Roger Gross. The Brunswick pool table was won by Pam Burns of Conowingo, MD. Ms.Burns is ecstatic about the opportunity to play pool at home with her 15year old son, Dustin Majerowicz. Dustin will be practicing and intends toqualify for the 2008 BEF Junior National 9- Ball Championships which willbe held at the University of Arizona, Tucson this summer. The BEF would like to wholeheartedly thank everyone whose donations, time and commitment help to build youth billiard programs and support thefuture of our sport.

Portlander Dane Lovell also took hundreds of pictures, which will be featuredon the Western BCA website atwww.westernbca.org.The first champions crowned were inthe Open Mixed Scotch Doubles, where 109 couples competed. The

final was a study in contrasts andopposites. On the one hand wereBobby Campbell and Molly Oliver ofWestern Washington BCA PoolLeague, young, talented, fearless,

and relatively “new” to Western BCA competition. On the other hand wereGuy and Robbin Iredale out of Juan de Fuca Pool League, long-time poolplayers and no strangers to WBCA regional tournaments. The final wasactually the second meeting of these two pairs as they played each otherin the hill match of the winner’s side earlier in the tournament. That meetingsent the veterans into the loser’s sideof the bracket, hoping to get anothershot at the new kids. After waiting untilthe loser’s side of the bracket caughtup with them, the Iredales played avery tough couple (Ernie Omori andVicki Knutson of Sno-King BCA PoolLeague who finished 3rd) and got theirwish for a replay. The final match washard fought and played with skill andstrategy. The final score was 5-3 forCampbell and Oliver, who played wellthroughout the match and proved tobe too much for their opponents tohandle on their way to the title. Bobby

and Molly played theirway to the top of thebracket undefeated andwill both be forces to bereckoned with in theirrespective divisions foryears to come. The Master ScotchDoubles championshad to wait until Sundayto finish up, because allfour players were

involved in Singles and Team events.Bill Rosenberry and Faye Fang wonthe hill and looked like the winners, but Steve Lingelbach and CarissaBiggs came through the loser ’sbracket and won the first final matchto force the sudden death final. Steveand Carissa won the finals with solidplay. When the event started, Fayewas an Open player, but after sheplayed in the Singles, she finished the

event as a Master. The powerhouse team of Mike Stevens and JackieFitchner finished 3rd in their first time playing together. Russell Cearleyand Kris Robbins, from the Eugene area, finished in 4th place. After an early exit from last year’s Men’s Master Singles, Glenn Atwellreturned as the 8-Ball champion forthe fifth time. Glenn beat last year’schampion, Dan Louie, in a classicmatch-up. In the finals Dan jumpedout to a 3-1 lead, but missed a toughmasse on the 8-ball when he cameup short on shape in a nice run in the5th game. That let Glenn get back inthe match, and he never looked backas he ran out several times, winningthe match 7-3. Matt Horner of Salem, who played Glenn for the point, took3rd, while veteran Don Wirtaman took4th.The Women’s Master Singleschampion is Jackie Fitchner, with awin over the ‘winningest’ woman in Western BCA history, Cindy Doty. This newconcept again proved to work well.Last year’s Team Champion had topass the torch. The Men’s Masterteam final pitted two worthy opponents

against each other. The matchfeatured many of the top regionalplayers. There were a whole lot ofrunouts by these teams and very fewshots were missed. The winningteam was “Wu Clan” with Dan Louie,Todd Marsh, Eddie Mataya, TimTweedel and Jason Evans. The final

match had Wu Clan taking a early lead and holding on to win 13-11,surviving the assault from Ph.D. (Pool Hall Doctors), composed of GlennAtwell, Pat Schumacher, Ken Dodd, Andrew Monstis, Pat Gamble and newplayer Damian Rebman. Wu Clan took a big lead in the match and PhD.fought back to put the pressure on Wu Clan. Last year’s champion team, playing as KC Midway this year, lost a chance to get back to the finalswhen Ph.D. beat them 13-7 in the loser’s bracket final. The Women’s Master Team champion was the loaded team, NPL-Chix.Teammates Jackie Fitchner, Cindy Doty and Liz Cole finished 1st, 2nd and3rd in the Women’s Master Singles, and with the talented Mary Hopkin andAndrea Saenz-Maes added to the mix, there was little doubt this teamwould be a force. But the Pond Sharks team gave them a battle, with JosieLeRoy as the only veteran Master, up-and-coming Eve Stockstill and FayeFang, who finished 1st and 4th respectively in the Women’s Open Singles, and Brenda Bartholomew and Anna Busley rounding out the team. TheOther Team, with top players Phyllis Fernandez and Mary Olson, finished3rd.The Women’s Open Team champion is Character #2, sponsored byQuinault Beach Resort Casino. This was probably the most surprising

finish of the Championships. No onepredicted the veteran team fromAberdeen would win. In the finals, theyran up against a tough Driving 101Returns team, captained by two-timereturning champion, Shirley Morgan, who was looking for a personal‘threepeat’, but it was not to be. ArleneDelacruz, just 6 weeks past majorsurgery, helped lead the Aberdeengals, Joanie Beaty, Sheila Aldrich,Patsy Elders and Candy Knutson tothe win. Character #2 had first class

character. Robin’s Chicks, fromPlayers Club in Southern Oregon, finished in 3rd place. The Men’s Open Team champions areShort Yellow Bus #6. Four players onthis team of seasoned playersfinished 2nd last year and they wanted

Van Boening, Pinegar, and Ellermantake 10, 9, & 8-Ball Titles at 15th U.S.Bar Table Championships, February25th - March 2nd at the SandsRegency Casino in Reno, NV. Tight pockets and icy winds couldn’tdeter the more than 362 players frombattling for the $24,500 added at thePlaybca.com and Sands Regencysponsored event.Coordinated by BCA Pool League staffRic & Bonnie Jones, Bill Stock, KenShuman, and Gibby Tkach, thematches ran on a tight, seamlessschedule even with the additional$6000 added 10-ball division. The 15th event commenced on achilly, February Monday at the SandsHotel and Casino in Reno, NV. The conditions complemented the lightningfast Simonis 860 Tournament Blue cloth covering the 32 Diamond 7’ SmartTables with tight, Pro cut 4-1/2” pockets. Red Circle cue balls and SuperAramith Pro balls rounded out the best equipment in tournament play today. The BCAPL tournament lights, bristling with built in scoring beads, kepttrack of the action.Inaugurated this year, the $6000 added 10-ball division drew 85 players.BCA Pool League representative, and multiple, magazine Player of theYear Shane Van Boening showed no mercy as he plowed through the fieldwith wins that included Justin Whitehead, Tyler Edey, Scott Frost, and EdwinMontal to place him comfortably in the hot-seat.In the loser’s bracket finals, Montal had a career defining moment as hedefeated Rodolfo Luat. In his second attempt at Van Boening, Montalcouldn’t dethrone the 10-Ball king who pocketed the $4,250.The 111 player 9-Ball division was dominated by Jonathan Pinegar who’sbest finish to date was a 7th at the Diamond Derby City Classic. Pinegar’sconfidence grew with wins over power players Jose Parica, Rudolfo Luat,Ernesto Dominguez, Stevie Moore, and young gun John Morra to snag thehot-seat. Although, suffering an early loss to Larry Wilson, Gabe Owen recoveredquickly to blow through the one loss side to freeze Scott Frost, Glenn Atwell,Larry Wilson, Van Boening, Adam Smith and, that other young gun justfresh from a 4th at the Swanee Memorial, Oscar Dominguez. He thenousted the always improving John Morra to earn a shot at Pinegar in thefinals. The question was could Owen defeat him twice? Owen got off to a healthystart and took the first set but, Pinegar was not to be separated from thetitle or the $5000.Kudos to Arizonan underdog Mitch Ellerman as he defeated the favoredParica TWICE to secure the Championship. With 140 plus playersclammering over the $8000 added 8-Ball event, Ellerman was elated.

To get there, he clobbered GabeOwen, Marshall Williams and AdamBehnke. Then in quarter finals Paricarelegated him to the loser’s bracket. Parica had overpowered StevieMoore, Justin Bergman, and SouthernCalifornian’s Ernesto Dominguezand, 3rd young gun to keep an eyeon, Damian Alishan. Pinegar, with hissights on the All Around cash, wasgoing for it before being overcome byParica.Pinegar’s defeat pitted him againstEllerman who was just too tough.Ellerman now, with his shot at glory, was not intimidated by the prospectof defeating Parica twice as hecollected the $6000 and the 8-Ball title.

Jonathan Pinegar’s 1st and 3rd place finishes earned an additional $2000and the honor of All Around Champion. Gabe Owen, earlier in the eventand not quite warmed up, was heard muttering, “I don’t now why I’m here.”Well, with a second and two 4th place finishes, he secured second and anextra $1000. That seems like a good enough reason. Shane Van Boeningtook 3rd and $500.Our Congrats to Andrea Wilson, Julie Hunter, and Tara Vreeland for their$600, $300, and $100 wins, respectively, in The Women’s All Around.US Bar Table Championships Results:10-Ball:1st $4250 Shane Van Boening2nd $2650 Edwin Montal3rd $1600 Rudolfo Luat4th $900 Gabe Owen5th $650 Scott Frost, Adam Behnke7th $450 Tyler Edey, Glenn Atwell9-Ball:1st $5000 Johnathan Pinegar2nd $3000 Gabe Owen3rd $2000 John Morra4th $1000 Oscar Dominguez5th $700 Adam Smith, Rudolfo Luat7th $500 Stevie Moore, Shane Van Boening8-Ball:1st $6000 Mitch Ellerman2nd $3650 Jose Parica3rd $2500 Johnathan Pinegar4th $1650 Gabe Owen5-6 $1000 Adam Behnke, Cliff Joyner7-8 $750 Darrold Crain, Glenn Atwell9-12 $525 Geoffrey Somer, Damian Alishan, Isaac Runnels, Jr, Marshall Williams13-16 $325 Jeff Heath, Mark Vinogradov, Ernesto Dominguez, Johannes KauhanenVisit Playbca.com for complete brackets and pay outs.Photocredits: SVB David Thomson ©mediumpool.com; Pinegar and Finalists; JustinCollett©theactionreport.com

another chance to grab the brass ring. JohnEvans, Darrell Schulden, Mike White and SteveMyers added Ron Ok and Mike Medlock to themix, and this time they came away as champions. The road wasn’t easy but the final match againstPC’s #1 went as they hoped. PC’s #1 withbrothers J. Keith and Brian Johnson, MiguelMorfin, Adam Stromberg and Steve Kielow fromthe Seattle area had a good run to finish second. Two Tacoma teams, Q’s Cruisers and SchoonerPredators finished 3rd and 4th.Tuesday night was mini-tournament heaven, withover 50 separate tournaments run by Stacy andAlex. Also on Tuesday night, the popular 10-ballring games were held. In the Master’s ring game,Jeff Jerome did it again by taking the top prizeover 12 other players. Each player put in $100and play started on 3 tables. By the time theplayers were whittled down to one table 6 playersremained, Jim Conway, Jeff Jerome, Ivan Doty,Robert Colby, Todd Speakman and Matt Bryan.Jeff got down to his last chip but turned it aroundto pocket $900, while Ivan took $400 for 2nd. Inthe Open ring game, seven players put up their$100, and Miguel Morfin took 1st, good for $500,with Jeff Coates winning $200 for 2nd. On Sundaynight, another ring game - bank pool - started, and many think it may be a future event.Chinook Winds Casino is a great place to havethis event since there is so much to do in LincolnCity. The beach was great as always and LincolnCity has many nice places to eat, shop and restbetween matches. Chinook Winds opened thedoor wide to make everyone feel welcome. When people weren’t playing pool or gambling

they were playing on the beach and visiting thelocal community.Gary Benson ran the brackets, showing why heis the absolute best under trying conditions.Veteran Master player Ted Woodward gave upplaying in the tournament to help Gary keep thetournament flowing. Thanks, Ted! The tightercorner pockets on the Diamond tables addedtime to some of the matches and that causedsome very late matches almost every night.Diamond Promotions and Ric Jones provided 80tables in great condition and they were in full use.Chinook Winds Casino Resort added $10,000to the event. It was a pleasure to work with theChinook Winds crew including Bob, Keith, Kelli,Melissa and Belinda. BCAPL added $2,300, andthanks goes out to the people at the top whomake it happen, Mark Griffin, DavidVandenberghe (who was sighted at Lincoln City)and Bill and Glenna Stock. Thank you all verymuch! The best full color tournament program in historyhappened this year. Its high quality andprofessional look added greatly to raise theawareness of the Western BCA and ourtournaments. It included player profiles, pastwinners, rules and advertisements by some ofthe great supporters of pool in the Northwest. The grand prize drawing was a 5-day stay at aHorizon Rentals location on the Oregon Coast.Thank you, Horizon Rentals! The lucky grandprizewinner was Larry Maes, from Tacoma.Congratulations, Larry! Many door prizes were

given out, including embroidered denim jackets, zip up hoodies, cues, cases, jewelry, pool instruction books and glasses donated by Rodder’sPub and Grub in Oregon City. ChinookWinds provided $500 in prizespurchased from venders at event. The “Best Dressed Women’s Team”was “Got Rail” from Emerald ValleyLeague. This sharp looking teamhelped represent the Western BCA ina first-rate way.Emerald Valley wins the mostsupportive league award byvolunteering to the max! StacySherman, Alex and Dayle Stroup,Darcy Moss and Cindy Rosenthal(when she wasn’t playing), were realworkhorses, stepping in and doinganything that needed doing. Nate andCathy Dunford also put in many hours volunteering to make things runsmooth. Alex ran mini-tournaments and 2nd Chance tournaments, workedon the podium and in general saw to it that if help was needed he wasthere! Dayle ran the Western BCA store and answered questions betweenplaying pool and making jewelry. Dayle has become a big part of what ittakes to make the podium and store work. Of course, Western BCA’streasurer and paymaster, Joyce Gumm, put out checks at a record pace, with help from Sassy Campbell. More checks, more work, more happyplayers, it was all in a day’s work for Joyce and Sassy.Other volunteers included Bill Henderson, Sam Rabito, Andrew Monstis,Mike and Rosie Jensen, Terry Ludwig, Jason Miller, Kurt Hamm, Tom Moss,Steve Marker and Kathi Giles. Joyce Gumm was the person behind thegreat shirt and program cover design, and she and Starla Mixon handledthe program advertising, while Sassy Campbell was responsible forprogram content. Robbin Iredale is Western BCA’s Webmaster, and saysa whole new look is coming to the website. Western BCA, as usual, offered

clothing, cups and hats for sale to commemorate the event. On the Wire/Billiard and Barstools, 911 Billiards and Dave Lauer’s ParlorBilliards took up vendor spaces. They worked long hours, providing

products and services for all theplayers. Chinook Winds provided afood court and no host bar, and theirsupport was appreciated. And of course the referees, DarrylFarley, Rick Doner, Pat Mowdy, JerrySalois, Hal Sparrow and KellyReynolds worked long hours to coverthe late night matches. They had extrapressure on them because the ruleswere new to many of the players, sothey not only served as referees, butas rules instructors as well. Great jobguys! BCAPL sent the talentedinstructor Ken Shuman to Lincoln City

to give a National Referee Certification Class prior to the start of thetournament. All of the refs were National Certified and 4 new referees,Robbin Iredale, Stacy Sherman, Rodney Ward and Sam Rabito took theclass and received their National Certification by getting their floor timeduring the Championships. Tacoma, WA 3-1.The Blue Tier was slotted to attend the Regional event in Grants Pass,OR.

The three tiers for competition in the9-Ball Shootout are:Green Tier (skill level 1,2&3)White Tier (skill level 4&5)Black Tier (skill level 6,7,8&9)Dave Heuett (SL7) of Federal Way,WA was the winner of the Black Tier.Winning his first match against DanSchott 46-16, he lost his secondagainst Rob Strobel 46-26 sendinghim to the B side. Dave defeated BrentRedinger 46-20 only to meet Danagain. Dave won 46-20 to bring him

into the finals match against Jeff Wells(SL7) of Seattle, WA. Victory struck,Dave won 55-10.Apinant (Peanut) Preyer (SL 5) ofLakewood, WA took the White Tier bystorm. He defeated Adam Brand 38-7, Joe Bossi 38-19, DavidFitzsimmons 38-17, again Joe Bossi38-27 to meet Glen Curtis (SL 4) fromKent, WA in the finals match. Peanutbeing unstoppable won the match 38-19.The Green Tier was an interesting

bracket. Generally sixteen players comprise a Regional Tournament Board.Since only five skill level 1, 2 or 3’s qualified; the APA was gracious enough

to let that few of participants competeon a Board, instead of holding themover a season till more qualify. TheBoard consisted of five players, threeof which were a ‘no-show’. Therefore,Kasie Warren (SL 2) of Auburn, WAand Karen Dhaliwal (SL 3) of Bellevuewent directly to the Finals match.Kasie beat Karen 19-10 to send heron her way to the NSC. However, since the APA guarantees every playerto play twice, Karen did not have

another opponent to play against. TheAPA gave her direct entry into the nextRegional event. All’s well that endswell!Best of luck to the six players qualifiedfor the National SinglesChampionship. Viva Las Vegas. The flu bug picked the wrong time tohit me, but my goal was for everyoneto have a good time. Since the ten 31/2 x 7 pool tables were being usedfor the tournament and some may nothave felt like playing on any of the eleven 4 1/2 x 9 tables, card and boardgames (Monopoly, Life, Yatzee, Trouble, Backgammon, etc) were available
