true in the Kiwanis Family world. UCLA Circle K is one o the largest, loudest,

strongest and exciting organizations ever to hit CNH Circle K history. I mysel am

proud not only to be a Bruin, but also a UCLA Circle K member. This group o

Hello~! Guess who! :) I am Jennifer, your one and only 2011-

2012 Publications Editor! It is my honor to present to you the

very rst newsletter o the new term - you have no idea how

much pressure I had while working on it! I’ve had much experi-

ence with layout and design through journalism, but that was

with a newspaper, not a newsletter... So it’s a bit o a change!

But enough o that... More than ever, I am looking orward

to this new 2011-2012 term! Our board has plenty o things

planned, rom service events to socials and just about every-

thing inbetween. You should DEFINITELY look orward to it!

I’m a bit delirious as I’m typing this blurb since I’ve been lack-

ing sleep in the last ew days, but I’ll be surely KO’ing ater the

banquet (and any midterms and papers, yikes!).

On a nal note, I hope you all enjoy this wonderul newslet-

ter. It will surely improve in the uture! Be sure to come out to

Public Relations committee meetings with me and SirivalliChamarti to take part! Thank you and ENJOY~! :D

Shantytown is a project where we

worked with Habitat for Human-

ity by building cardboard houses as

a demonstration campaign toattract

more volunteers in addition to spread-

ing awareness about homelessness and

inadequate living conditions.

Circle K members arrived at the

event throughout the day to help build

a demonstration house. The main goal

of the awareness project was to grab

other peoples’ attention so that they

could learn more about Habitat for

Humanity. In particular, we had a lot of

fun at the event because we decided

to make it like a clubhouse where wecould go inside and “lounge”around.

Each Circle K Member contributed to

a different part of the house (i.e. the

garage, the kitchen, the car, the televi-

sion, the bed, etc); we were like a team

of non-prot contractors, carpenters,

and architectures. This year, we made a

new video clip of our house, and I was

the person who gave the tour.

Overall, the event was very enjoyable

and I felt like a child who was building a

clubhouse (like in Disney Channel’s “Out

of theBox”). The Habitat for Humanity

members appreciated our creativity andthey liked that we could play inside out

house. The event helped me learn more

about Habitat for Humanity and home-

lessness. In addition, it opened up a new

“door to service” such that I could easily

become active in this area of social wel-

fare. I’m looking forward to the event

next year, and I hope that more Circle

K’ers can learn more about Habitat for

Humanity.

service

Easter arrived a week early

his year in Culver City. UCLA

ircle K, along with fellow

iwanians from Culver City,

SC, and Jefferson High School,

overed Veterans Memorial

ark with thousands of candy-

lled Easter eggs to the delight

f dozens of kids. What had

aken us hours to prepare took

he children minutes to sweep

p, but it was worth it seeing the

miles on their faces and the joy

f their parents. Despite the 90+

egree weather, UCLA Circle K

aintained its enthusiasm and

nergy while working the game

ooths and interacting with all

ttendees, but special kudos

oes out to Diane Santos, who,

s the friendliest Easter Bunny,

took countless pictures withexcited children.

As someone new to Circle K

(but certainly not to service), I

loved this Easter Egg Hunt as my

rst Kiwanis event. It reminded

me of why I, and indeed others,

need to live a life of service:

the smallest deed can have the

greatest impact not only for

the recipient, but also for the

volunteer. It was so gratifyingjust to witness the boundless

curiosity and happiness of the

kids – some just a few months

old – working their way through

the egg patches. Having fun

and meeting the lovely people

of UCLA Circle K were added

bonuses to what I hope will only

be the beginning of more kickin’

it with the Kiwanis and of course,

a lifetime of service.

Sirivalli Chamarti, Second-YearPublicity Chair

Over 10,000 prospective students,

arents, vendors and student groups at-ended Bruin Day on April 9. Of course,

CLA Circle K was lucky to be selected to

ttend the event to be able to recruit new

ember and spread the word of service!

For the Circle K members at the booth,

was very exciting to meet new mem-

ers and even teach these future Bruins

couple of cheers. We also encouraged

them to not only attend UCLA but con-

tinue in their endeavors to change the

world by remaining active in the Kiwanis

family. We were caught in a moment of

our youth, as only a couple of years ago,

many of us had gone through the same

process as the seniors. “Why choose UCLA

for college?”, “What is Circle K?”,”How is

it different from Key club?”,”What kind of

service do you do?” were all very com-

mon questions, expectedly, of the students

had and they were very excited to know

what college was like at UCLA. The entire

Dickson court was packed to the maximum

extend and vendors had delicious food

the scent of which we could detect from

across the plaza. Many students and par-

ents stopped by our table and one lucky

prospective Bruin even went home with a

bag full of candy.

Bruin Day was a wonderful event, and

I’m really excited for the year ahead. The

energy feeding into this school and this

organization towards spreading the word

of service is just incredible; the future

most denitely looks bright.

Cah-feh. Why is it pro-nounced that way? Why not

cayfe? Anyways... UCLA

Circle K showed up to our own little picnic near Janss Steps.

t began pretty normally. People ghting over food (lumpia,

PB&strawberry sandwiches, fresh lemonade, etc.) laughing over

othing, and just… enjoying each other’s company. But then, the

most exciting and tense section of every café turkey came up…

he auction. This time, in the spirit of Easter we auctioned off

aster Baskets (made by your board!) Some items in the baskets

were glowing swords, money, people (the basket maker’s were

sold” to the buyers for a certain amount of time,) and a $30

oda bottle. Then…a surprise! An Easter Egg hunt! The eggswere hidden pretty well, but this was as the sun was setting, so

by the time we began the hunt it was dark. People had to scour-

ng the hills and every single inch within a couple hundred meter

adius other then the 6th step (if you don’t know what that is,

ask someone!) We found some interesting things…but all in all,

aster Egg hunt, success! Cafe Turkey? Success!

On April 22 and April 23, the UCLA

Circle K-ers decided to celebrate the

wonderful Earth with a environmental

weekend celebration. Seeing that April

22nd is Earth Day, UCLA Circle K partici-

pated in environmentally friendly service

vents and socials.

Starting the weekend off with a beach

leanup, a group of nine students came

ut to Santa Monica Beach to pick up

rash. The beach can be a sunny and

riendly place but it sure needed some

pring cleaning. The Circle K-ers found

arious pieces of trash such as cigarette

butts, soda bottles, and even clumps of

ar. Afterwards, the Circle K-ers took a

rip back to UCLA to prepare themselves

or the movie, Wall-E.

Keeping with the theme and want-

ng to take a break from service, Circle

K decided to watch Wall-E to learn of

their effects on the environment. It

was relaxing and a good way foreveryone to recharge themselves.

Feeling extra environmental from

Wall-E, the Circle K-ers continued

on with their environmental week-

end by helping out with campus

recycling.

The Circle K-ers took the night in their

own hands by sorting out recyclables

from the trash around campus. Luckily,

they did not run into any squirrels hidden

in trash cans. It was a fun night as they

explored the campus while helping apart in the campus and the environment’s

well-being. It helped end Earth Day

but there was still one more event the

next day to nish off the Environmental

weekend.

On Saturday, April 23rd, a bunch of

Circle K-ers woke up early in the morn-

ing to help out Tree Musketeers. The

event called for caring for new trees

that were just planted and the Circle

K-ers helped ensure that these young

trees will stay alive for the future. This

required that the members help prune

and provide mulch for the trees. The Tree

Musketeers event ended the environ-

mental weekend. Feeling refreshed, the

members felt satised for their weekend

of helping the environment.

fellowshipOn April 5th the Ackerman Grand

Ballroom transformed from an empty salon

to a functioning roller-skating rink.Roll-AIDS is an annual fundraising event that supports One Heart Source,

n organization helping kids with HIV/AIDs in Tanzania. Participants have

he opportunity to donate and raise awareness by roller-skating around the

ballroom, accompanied by the dance oor atmosphere created by a live DJ.

UCLA Circle K was one group of many that attended. Admittedly, we

were not the most elegant skaters on the oor; we spent most of the time

olding on to each other for dear life as we trembled slowly with the ow

f other, more seasoned skaters. This didn’t hurt our spirits, however, because

he tables that formed the perimeter of the rink were layered with candy!

Our group had many laughs throughout the night as more and more

people populated the rink. I am proud to say that no one in the group fellnce that night except for me; I was still trying to understand the art of

braking.

All in all it was a great event! What truly made the night worthwhile

was seeing the hundreds in attendance showing their support for those

ffected with HIV/AIDS. Roll on down next year to help

UCLA Circle K promote awareness!

kiwanis family

“The main thing is to keep the

main thing… the main thing.” This

was the not-seemingly inspirational

uote from the past international

overnor that was retold by Tom

Millham, our current Kiwanis District

Governor at the Kiwanis Governor

Visit. Every year, each Kiwanis

ivision host a Kiwanis Governor

Visit, a dinner that features the

District Governor, a dinner, andther presentations.

Grace Ann Cecilio, Brian Wong,

uke Liao, Connie Lam, and I

ad the opportunity to meet Tom

Millham, himself, along with other

Kiwanians in our district. We were

ortunate enough to have Donna

Alvarez of Culver City Kiwanis

ponsor all of us to go, and we

pent time talking to her and others

ver a delicious meal of salmon, beef, and salad. Donna even

presented the Hope for America

Award to both Grace and Brian for

their commitment and hard work

with the Culver City Kiwanians over

the last four years. Good job guys!

We helped Tom sell pins and

rafe prizes – I won a wine glass

(nothing ironic here). Even with

the chit chat and fun festivities,

the part of the event that stood

out the most was Tom Millham’s

speech to our whole division. He

emphasized membership retention,

recruitment and club growth. Heencouraged us to keep recruiting

members because he knows that

each member has the potential to

make an impact in our community.

He asked us to keep thinking of

new service ideas and to keep

doing service because although

Kiwanians and even us, Circle Kers,

enjoy each other’s company, we

sometimes forget why we are in the

club – to serve the children of the

world – live to serve, love to serve. And that’s the main thing.

Brian Kan, Second-YearKiwanis Family Chair

On April 2, members of the Kiwanis

rganization joined together and

id service for a day. Our members

nd members of other local Kiwanis

rganizations, including the Kiwaniansnd Key Clubbers, gathered at the LA

ood Bank and prepared food for the

ess fortunate.

Before registration, the group went

n quick tour around the food bank

acilities. It was interesting to see how

he food was arranged and stored. After

egistration, we watched a video about

he LA Food Bank’s motives and effects.

Kiwanis One Day participants were then

ivided into groups and each group

had different tasks, which consisted of

separating expired food from the non-

expired food, breaking down boxes,

sorting preservatives, and packing food

into boxes.

I was assigned the task to separate

and prepare boxes, and distribute them

to the food packers. Separating boxeswas more difcult than I thought, since

the boxes were packed tightly together.

I gave that task to one of my fellow

members and took care of distributing

boxes. Because distribution was slow, I

helped pack food, collected small boxes,

and gave them to the members who

were breaking them down. I knew those

members were glad that I gave them

something to do.

Throughout the day, we interacted with

the Kiwanians and some Key Clubbers.

We were even invited by the Key Clubbers

to eat lunch with them at their high school.

We were enthusiastic, because of the

free pizza and the opportunity to hang

out with them. However some members,

including myself, were unable to attendand headed back to campus.

Kiwanis One Day was a fun and

educational service event. We learned

how long food remain good after the

expiration date and how its like to be a

food bank worker. As a reward of our

hard day’s work, we received a nifty pen

that looked like a spoon. We happily

showed off our “spoons” while taking

pictures and celebrated a job well done.

You know what fries my wings? End of

he year banquets! I’m excited about

UCLA Circle K’s banquet but man oh

man, that’s just one of many banquets

want to go to. There’s UCSD’s, Long

Beach’s, and other school’s banquetswant to stuff myself full at. And

hey’re also pricey. Fifteen to twenty

dollars to attend each banquet?

Goodness, there might as well be a

district fundraising initiative just for

hem. So what is an amazing hybrid

creature going to do to alleviate this

banquet dilema? Get surgery and

split myself into two. Just kidding. I’m

going to save. I’m going into lockdown

mode after UCLA Circle K’s banquet

until summer starts. No eating caviar

everyday. No spending money on

Louis Vuitton clothing. Time to just stay

put and save as much as I can if i

want to attend those fabulous ban-

quets.

f you’re having the same issue but

can’t seem to save, here’s my two

urkey cents: only attend the banquets

you can really go to! We’re all busy,

poor college students, and as muchas we want to support other schools,

we’re not superheroes! Well, not un-

ess you’re Patrick Huie.

So there’s my little rant for the day.

Until my next rant, I shall be seeing

you all at other school’s banquets!

Love,

Turkey

Sitting off the no

east corner of Pi

and Westwood,

shell of a restaurant doesn’t look like much; a

quite frankly, the interior doesn’t look too ap-pealing either. With a U-shaped counter and

grill in the middle, Apple Pan sticks to its roots

and still feels from the 1940’s. However, afte

waiting in line and seating yourself, Apple Pa

greets you with fast service from behind the c

ter and instantly serves up the hottest fries. Se

ously, be careful. Then before your third fry, t

waiter has already put in your order and serv

up your choice of either a Hickory Burger or

Steak Burger. There are some more options l

a few deli choices and a few vegetarian frien

options. After your burger and fries, nish it o

with their famous apple pie a la mode or a s

of pecan pie. You have not experienced UCL

until you’ve come to Apple Pan.

Tip: Get your order to go, the fries is about th

times the size of the counter order of fries!
