Dear Friends, 2018 PARISH YEAR OF RENEWAL Even if the first few weeks of Lent didn’t begin well for you; even if we fell at the first hurdle, or just didn’t get off to a good start, we can begin again for these remaining weeks of Lent, especially if we go to Confession, asking God to wipe away all our sins, and give us a fresh start. Many people are taking up the call and opportunity to do things together this Lent - coming to an extra weekday Mass, Confession, Eucharistic Adoration, Lent Study Group, Stations of the Cross. In such simple ways we encourage one another, and build up our parish community in worship of God. This monthly Newsletter, and the weekly Sunday Bulletin, have plenty of ideas for our communal renewal during this initial Year of Parish Renewal. Our generosity to our two Lenten Charity Projects (page 3) demonstrate real solidarity with the poor and most vulnerable, as does time given to pray and witness during these 40 Days for Life at one of Bournemouth’s five abortion centres. 24 HOURS FOR THE LORD is an initiative of Pope Francis over the two days before Mothering Sunday (this year Friday 9th - Saturday 10th March), when the Holy Father urges every Catholic to give some short time in their Parish Church to adore Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar and receive His forgiveness in the Confessional. Don’t miss this mid-Lent opportunity. HOLY WEEK and EASTER are at the end of this month. These days of the Sacred Triduum have never been ‘days of obligation’ because the Church expects that everyone will want to be here. No one should be missing from Maundy Thursday’s Mass of the Lord’s Supper (8pm on Thursday 29th March); nor dare we think of deserting Jesus on Good Friday at the hour of His saving Death (the 3pm Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion on Friday 30th March). Unless we have first participated in these preliminary days, we cannot really celebrate the Resurrection at Easter. We wish you renewal in holiness during the remainder of Lent, all the blessings of Holy Week, and the great joy of Christ’s Risen Life at Easter. Dear Friends,

2018 PARISH YEAR OF RENEWAL

Even if the first few weeks of Lent didn’t begin well for you; even if we fell at the first hurdle, or just didn’t get off to a good start, we can begin again for these remaining weeks of Lent, especially if we go to Confession, asking God to wipe away all our sins, and give us a fresh start.

MONTHLY PRAYER PAGE for MARCH 2018

SICK AND HOUSEBOUND: Sheila Brook, Brian Coburn, Roy (Christopher) Coombs, Liliana Couch, Theresa Fitt, Bronislawa Konstantin, Elfin Leahy, Tony McCarthy, Mary Moret, Arlene Nicol, Laurens Obagi, Pat Pope, Alf Skee, Rose Smith, Attracta Spears, Michael Sullivan, John & Hilary Timson, Mary Urwin, Marjorie Walsh and Alan Wright.

We pray for sick and housebound parishioners during Wednesday Eucharistic Adoration. Holy Communion is taken to them weekly by our Extraordinary Ministers. The Fathers visit all the Housebound during Advent and Lent, and at need, for the Sacraments of Confession and Anointing. Please tell the Parish Office of anyone who needs visiting by a priest.

GOING INTO HOSPITAL: If you, a family member, or Catholic friend, are going into hospital, it is important to ensure that the Catholic Chaplain knows you’re there, that your religion is recorded as ‘Catholic’ on your admission papers, and that you ask to be visited by the Catholic Chaplain.

Please also let the Parish Office know that you’re in hospital, so that we can pray for you, and that your own Priests can visit for pastoral care. Political correctness now prevents this, unless we know your ward, date of birth, or address. If you’re not yet registered on the Parish Census, it’s important to do this too. Green census cards are at the back of the church.

LENTEN CHARITY PROJECTSPlease be generous in the Retiring Collectionsat the end of Mass every weekend during Lent.

1. AID TO THE CHURCH IN NEED is our Overseas project - a Catholic charity helping Christians persecuted, oppressed or in pastoral need in over 140 countries worldwide.

Neville Kyrke-Smith, National Director of Aid to the Church in Need, spoke at the end of Masses on the 2nd Sunday of Lent (24/25th February) about the vital work ACN is doing in helping persecuted and oppressed Christians in the Middle East. Neville has headed this expanding Catholic charity since 1991 and has travelled extensively with the charity to project countries – recently including Iraq and Lebanon. ACN is a Pontifical Foundation of the Catholic Church.

BROTHERS OF THE SECULAR ORATORY(a.k.a. The Little Oratory) starts after Easter.

St Philip Neri's first association was of lay people (the clerical Congregation came later.) They met daily in the Oratory where one of the Brothers or Fathers read from Scripture or a spiritual book, followed by a discourse on what they had just heard, or St Philip would ask them to discuss a given topic. The talks were always on prayer, the lives of Saints, the Virtues, or Church history. A period of mental prayer followed, then litanies and ‘the Oratory Prayers’. This pattern is still followed today in Oratories around the world - where there can also be Women’s Oratory and Teens’ Oratory.

Brothers of the Oratory is open to men aged 18 and over, at 6pm on 2nd Fridays, starting on 13th April. Speak to one of the Fathers.

ROSARY ON THE COAST Sunday 29th April. This initiative of the Catholic Laity across the British Isles invites the faithful of our nations, supported by our Bishops, Clergy, and the Rectors of our English and Welsh National Marian Shrines (Walsingham & Our Lady of the Taper), and follows the recent examples of Poland and all Ireland. Visit the website: www.rosaryonthecoast.co.uk and Facebook. We’re responsible for our part of the coast and will be praying the Rosary there at 3pm.

EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS. Saturday 5th May, at the New Theatre Royal, Portsmouth is a preparatory day of workshops on the Eucharist with talks by Fr Stephen Wang, Bishop Philip, and with Youth 2000 music. It’s free but must be booked: [email protected] This is part of our diocesan preparation for the National Eucharistic Congress in Liverpool from 7th to 9th September 2018. Book the date.
