PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

SHARING EXPERIENCES
“And hold fast to the Rope of Allah, and be not divided among yourselves” Al-Imran 3:103
It has been noticed that there are brothers and sisters who are thinking to volunteer for the Islamic Society of Kingston, but it takes them long to take a start. Their work and domestic hours may conflict with the volunteering time, appropriate volunteer work may not be available, or the people in the team which they want to join are unknown to them and they are not sure how it will work out. This list adds up to hinder the volunteering process. It is binding upon those who have been volunteering for ISK to share their experiences which can facilitate volunteering for those who wish to join in.
One can easily google 5 or 10 reasons for volunteering, which include general goodness, saving resources, experience, bringing people together, personal growth, community building, learning, giving back, satisfaction and so on. This could be true in many cases but volunteering for ISK or for Islam in general has an additional spiritual foundation. Therefore, follow-ing few points may help to facilitate volunteering for ISK.
Volunteer only for the sake of Allah SWT. It is easy to say, but it must come from the heart. Many consider it under-stood and granted, but one has to remind oneself this consistently and to others intermittently.
Estimate the volunteering hours which you can spare for ISK from your work, school and family time. As a reference, 45% general Canadian population volunteers an average of 154 hours per year, which means about 3 hours per week.
Volunteering for various ISK committees and for small chores around the ICK, average three hours a week volunteer-ing may work in most cases. These hours may vary from week to week but the average will remain in this range.
For increased responsibilities such as executive members and committee coordinators the requirement can change from 3 to 10 hours per week or more, depending on the responsibilities. It also depends upon the personal commit-ment and dedication.
Every volunteer should expect that he/she are going to be a team member, and avoid personalizing. Success of the team is the achievement and reward for all.
A team spirit helps to understand the meaning of unity and strength in Islam, which is very much emphasized in Quran as it is shown above.
Our spiritual reference point is always Quran and Sunnah; and ISK operational procedure is its constitutional frame-work. Both these checks are there to shun the influences of shaitan as well as personal whims.
ISK constitutional democracy is topped up with our faith obligations of caring and looking after others rights as we do for ourselves. It is a strengthening force and does not fully show itself in secular democracy. It can be further rein-forced through consultation process.
Policy disagreement is natural, but once decision is made within constitutional framework then it should be accepted and belligerent opposition afterward be avoided, because it may lead to chaos.
Volunteering for ISK with dedication strengthen our Imaan (faith) and our obligations to Allah SWT, develops brother and sisterhood within the community, shuns arrogance, and establishes the framework for caring and respecting each other as an obligation to fellow Muslims and others.
Volunteering of ISK means establishing our Deen in Kingston and Canada.
In this internet age you may consider volunteering from your home.
Working for ISK is a trust from Allah SWT, and should be guarded as such all the time.
I pray to Allah SWT to guide and help us to serve Islam the best possible way to please Him.
Mohammad Saleem, President of ISK

IMAM’S MESSAGE
Time is the Greatest Asset
Recently I came across a classical Urdu work, which also is allegedly the first novel of Urdu. It is about the life and times of northern India just before the arrival of the British. One thing that particularly struck me about the Muslim culture, especially of Lucknow, as depicted in the novel, was its characteristic decadence and an obsessive pursuit of base pleasures. The elite culture was known to waste precious hours of the day either by sleeping or taking part in rooster fights. The nights were reserved for visiting bordellos, wild drink-ing parties and other vain pursuits. The rest of the society followed suit. The novel, which attained thunder-ous success soon after its publication, was most appreciated for the reality-based snapshot of the lives of Muslim elite in India before the British colonial might displaced them from power. How true is the message of the Quran in light of the history of nations: Allah SWT awards status and power to a nation only to see what it does. When the moral rot sets in, that nation is soon replaced by another that is on a higher moral ground. We all must keep in mind the hourglasses of life we have been given. Life is indeed a precious gift. Visit the intensive care unit of any hospital and witness patients wishing for just one more hour beyond their ex-pected demise. Yet are we not all in that same state? Life is unpredictable and takes many an unexpected turns at any given span of time. Someone is here, and then they are no more. We may believe that we would arise from our beds tomorrow morning, but some of us most assuredly will not. Should this fact alone not encourage us to appreciate the gift of life and the hours we have been given? One thing that I have con-sistently seen in Muslim cultures is the wastefulness of time. This reminds me of a nineteenth century auto-biographical account of a Mughal prince, Yusuf Kambalposh, who was forced by circumstances to leave the cushy life of a Mughal elite in India, and travel to Europe by ship. After a few years of stay in Europe during the height of the Industrial Revolution, he returned to his homeland only to be dismayed by the backward-ness and ignorance of his compatriots. He tried to tell them that the conditions and the way of life of the Brit-ish was way ‘superior’ to theirs and they needed to change their way of thinking, only to be told by the audi-ence that if true, the British would not have left Britain to sail towards India. In the end, Yusuf loses hope of changing the minds of his fellow countrymen and instead hoped to visit Russia before his death. How rightly has Ali (RA) said: Time is an unsheathed sword; if you don’t cut it, it will cut you. This means that if we forget time, it would finish us off. We Muslims should bear in mind that Allah SWT revealed an en-tire chapter entitled “Time” on the subject of being heedless of time. The main lesson is that all humanity is by default in serious loss – except those who are upright. The best way to value time is to set high goals in life. When we have a direction, we constantly measure our progress in view of how close we are from our objectives. Indeed, those without goals in life remain at the mercy of the waves of time, and are in the end, lost and forgotten. I pray and sincerely hope that Muslims, especially the youth, come to realize the impor-
tance of time during their waking hours and that they make the most of them every day. Ameen. by Imam Sheharyar Shaikh
