The Body Gesture and Space in the Composition of Sonic Worlds in

    Augmented Reality Environments

The Centre for Research in Game Technology & Interactive Systems is offering a

Research Postgraduate Scholarship to investigate The Body Gesture and Space in theComposition of Sonic Worlds in Augmented Reality Environments.

This research programme will investigate the perception of space in electroacousticcomposition in augmented reality (AR) environments based on the influence of thehuman body and gesture in its perception. Through research, composition and creativepractice, the application of acoustics, gesture models, and psychoacoustics in ARtechnology will be explored.

Technological advancements far outpace the establishment of fundamental designframeworks. As 'Virtual Reality Head-Mounted Displays', emerge as mainstreamconsumer devices - Augmented Reality equivalents that combine the real and virtualworlds are concurrently being developed and offer many creative possibilities.Compatibility with human perceptual and cognitive processes is a starting point todesigning any digital interface system, whereby human users are presented withdynamically changing information. It will be argued that the body, gesture and theperception of space are fundamental, especially where the acquisition of newknowledge is the key objective during the creative process of composing sonic worldsfor augmented reality environments.

The suitable candidate will therefore be required to conceive, design, and test aframework that incorporates such constraints across the visual and auditory domains, and identify key design protocols that embrace pedagogical principles ofelectroacoustic composition and its application to augmented reality.

Scholarship Conditions: Fees and 6,000stipend per annum (x 2 years)
