CYSS offers various programs to support children and families with child care, recreation, socialization and child development for children of all ages. The Child Development Centers (CDCs) offer full day and hourly child care programs for ages 6 weeks–5 years old. School Age Center (SAC) offers a vari-ety of care, including part day preschool and full day, hourly, and before and after school care for school age children. The Family Child Care (FCC) program offers full day, hourly, before and after school and extended hours care for ages 6 weeks–12 years old. The Youth Center (YC) offers an after-school middle school program, open recreation, health, fitness and social opportunities for 6th grade and up.

Child Development Centers (CDC’s)Army CYSS Programs have been described as “a model for the na-tion,” and they do the best to deserve that accolade! All of the cen-ters are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The rates are competitive with other programs of comparable quality. Hourly care is also available at South Post CDC Monday–Friday, 7:30 am–4:30 pm. Reservations may be made up to four weeks in advance. If you want to know about the daily lesson plans, schedules and routines, child growth and development issues, or what constitutes a quality day care experience for children, just ask! Strong Beginnings Pre-K This program targets school readiness by focusing on social, emo-tional, academic and physical development children preparing to enter kindergarten. Students’ progress is reported to parents to en-sure that they’re reaching expected school readiness goals. During a typical morning, students focus on Mathematics, Language/Literacy, Science/Technology or Social Studies; they engage in fun interactive learning stations for Creative Expression, Art, Woodworking, Cook-ing, Water/Sand and Music/Movement. Markham School Age Center (SAC)SAC complements the school day with a state-of-the-art

computer lab and homework center to ensure sup-port with school assignments. During the school year, SAC offers part day preschool and prekinder-garten programs for children 3–5 years old. The curriculum emphasizes physical well-being, language usage, attentiveness, imagination, world knowledge, social and emotional development.

Family Child Care (FCC) Choosing child care is one of the most important decisions a par-ent can make. Child care should fit a parent’s idea about parenting and learning, as well as their child care needs. The Family Child Care program at Belvoir complies with Army regulations (AR 608-10) and offers a safe, home like environment, professionally trained providers, nutritious meals and snacks, smaller ratios, Creative Curriculum Standards of Learning and multiple child care options that meet regular and mission readiness child care requirements. Army Child Care in Your Neighborhood (ACCYN)The U.S. Army and the National Association of Child Care Re-source & Referral Agencies (NACCRRA) have joined forces to help Army Families find and pay for quality off-post child care through Army Child Care in Your Neighborhood (ACCYN). Army Families eligible for the program are active duty Army, Army DoD civilians, active duty Army Guard & Reserve. The goal of this project is to en-sure civilian child care programs provide care to Army Families that are comparable in quality and cost to Army operated on-post spaces. Eligibility Requirements for CYSS ProgramsOpen to current DoD personnel—active duty, retiree and DoD civilians. CYSS fees are on a sliding scale based on income. Note: retirees are only eligible for our sports and SKIES Unlimited programs. Call 703-805-9118 for more info.

ACS assists the military community by developing, coordinating and delivering services which help promote self-reliance, resilien-cy and stability during war and peace. ACS classes and training are designed to equip Soldiers and Families with the skills, knowl-edge and support needed to face the challenges of military life.

Information & Referral ProgramThe I&R Program maintains an integrated resource file of sources of service to which personnel may be referred. Referral procedures are used when it is not possible to provide immediate direct assistance. Follow-up procedures are provided to ensure that needs are met.

The SOS mission is to educate the community about their program and advocate on behalf of all Families who have suffered the loss of a Soldier. SOS strives to build a unified support program which embraces and reassures Survivors that they are continually linked to the Army Family for as long as they desire through resouces.

The Army Family Action Plan (AFAP) is input from the people of the Army to Army leadership. It’s a unique Army process that allows Soldiers and Families say what’s working, what isn’t and what could work. Many AFAP improvements impact quality of life for all services.

AFTB is an official Army training program that emerged as a re-sult of lessons learned after the Gulf War. It helps develop, ready Family and Soldiers and contributes to unit and mission readi-ness.

Why is AFTB Important? AFTB is a “Combat Multiplier:” AFTB develops the knowledge and skills in Family members, empowering them to thrive in their Army communities.AFTB is a Family Readiness Group (FRG) Enhancer: AFTB improves communications with the chain of command, FRG’s Rear Detach-ment and the Family’s ability to access the unit and community re-sources. Soldiers can earn promotion points by completing AFTB Level 1 as well as three other Army Community Service (ACS)

training programs. AFTB provides unit training and individual classes or concept blocks upon request.

Accomplished or up-and-coming artists and crafts people can develop their artistic skills or discover new ones in the The Kawamura Arts & Craft Center. It houses the MWR Frame Shop, Wood Shop and Auto Shop. The Frame Shop offers custom fram-ing—you can do your own framing, take a class or have it done for you! Plaques, flag boxes, shadow boxes, shadow frames and engraving services are also available. The Multi-Craft Area offers stained glass classes and jewelry classes. The Wood Shop offers a woodworking safety class and the capabilities of pen and bowl turning on a lathe, furniture, toy, ornament, deskplate construc-tion and more. The Automotive Shop offers bays for doing your work, a safety class and basic automotive maintenance classes.

Basic Framing Class Schedule Receive hands-on training and cover the introductory elements of framing for just $65 per person. There is no need to bring anything as a kit is provided to each student. Woodworking Safety Class Woodworkers wishing to use the Wood Shop are re-quired to complete a $10 mandatory safety class. The wood shop is closed to non-class members during the class. Upon completion of the class, patrons will sign a user’s agreement and receive a qualification card. Van Noy Library is currently undergoing multiple renovation projects. In order to provide service to customers, a small tempo-rary library, Library Lite, has been set up at Outdoor Recreation.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE• The Van Noy Library is closed for the facility renovation.• The Construction Phase of the Van Noy Library renovation proj-ect is still ongoing as there has been a recall on the sprinkler heads for the fire suppression system and this issue must be completed in order to reopen. The staff is currently hard at work putting the library back together and anticipate opening in late August 2012. • A small temporary library has opened at Outdoor Recreation (Bldg. 778, Tompkins Basin). To contact Library Lite at Outdoor Recreation, please call (703) 806-3323 (note: no voicemail is avail-able at this time). • Please return checked-out Van Noy Library materials to Outdoor Recreation.
