    White wants recount

in Van Buren electionBy Jerry LaVauteSpecial Writer

Paul White, the current supervisor ofVan Buren Township, has filed a requestto recount the votes cast for supervisor inthe Aug. 7 primary election.

The local Board of Canvassers certifiedthe results last week, indicating that fel-low Democrat Linda Combs had defeated

White by 50 votes. Combs received 1,109votes, whereas White received 1,059 votes.White said that he was concerned that

the total vote count for supervisor fellwell short of the total votes cast in theelection. In the township, 4,382 votes werecast, whereas the number of votes castfor township supervisor totaled 3,103votes.

Challenger Linda Combs said that sheexpected the recount, given the closenessof the race, but she was confident that thenumbers would hold.

Michigan State law requires that the

aggrieved candidate file a formal requestfor recount with the clerk of the board ofcanvassers that originally certified thecount, in this case Wayne County, withinsix days after the original canvass hasbeen completed.

Opposing candidates must be notifiedwithin 24 hours by the Wayne CountyClerk of the request for a recount, andthe candidates involved may have up to

two representatives at the site where theballots are recounted. The recount mustbe completed within 20 days of the filingof the counter-petitions.

In related election news, Republicancandidate Julianne Chard, who received16 valid write-in votes in last weeks pri-mary, will appear on the Nov. 6 generalelection ballot.
