"I can only say that we spend 1/3 of the year studying for the most farcical exam in the Indian Education System, 1/3 of it waiting for a decent result, and 1/3 waiting for a reevaluated result. At least DU makes sure the youth have something to do all year." - Aditi Subramaniam

Once upon a time, in a land far away, there was expected the UGC’s Pay Review Committee report. A large group of people waited with bated breath for it to announce its existence in their midst. That was the year 2006 and now we’ve said a cheery hello to 2008. With the coming of the announcement of revised pay scales for Central Government employees, the Federation of Central Universities’ Teachers’ Associations have demanded that the University Grants Commission’s Pay Review Committee submit its report at the earliest. “We are concerned over certain reports that the committee may take another three to six months to submit its report,” said Federation president Aditya Narayan Misra on Wednesday the 27th of August.

The problems faced by the faculty range from the inadequate pay packet to the basic service conditions that are denied to them. A teacher, on conditions of anonymity, talked about how the highest level that a Professor can reach is that of a Reader. Having taught in Delhi University since 1972, she gained her status as a Reader in 1984 and now has no professional incentive for academic growth. The many international conferences she has attended have been financed primarily through personal means with UGC claiming to shell out 50% ofthe finances incurred but in

reality giving support that adds up to a measly 30%. The infrastructure that DUTA demands is one that prioritizes space for adequate working arrangements and research projects taken up. While the report for the central government employees has already come out, the association waits for the report which is also seen by some to not adequately represent what the academia really wants.

There are also some who feel that further differentiation of the like that defines people as Lecturer and Reader is one that is inappropriate and unwarranted. They feel that it leaves too much scope for “further hierarchical differentiation within the teaching profession”. It may even be used effectively to finding efficient ways to satisfy the criteria of Performance Appraisal Forms instead of rewarding excellence when due. The report is thus desperately needed to clarify and perhaps give rest to some of the doubts plaguing the minds of so many. In order to perhaps pressurize UGC into the immediate submission of the report, the teachers’ federation has threatened to observe a dharna and hunger strike outside the University Grants Commission office on Friday the 29th.

BHEJA FRy LAW OF

THE WEEK

I thought I'd surprise my best friend by landing up at her house the day she was leaving for college. I went all the way to Gurgaon, battled horrible traffic mixed with a dust-storm and reached her house only to find out that she was at her Grandmother's house in DELHI, and leaving for the airport from there! Spontaneity really got my bheja fried!

This Bheja Fry moment has been sent to us by Nisha Gangwani. She

“It’s just another day which is not very

genuine. People who really believe in it

don’t need a day to reinforce it.”

Mr. Dilip K Basu - Rajdhani College“The only day in the year that gives a chance to the

students to speak and appreciate us. Makes one feel

special and commemorates a thankless job.”

Ms. Ira Gaur - St. Stephen’s College

“It’s a good thing. Students get a chance

to articulate what they expect from a

good teacher. An occasion for greater

communication and it feels extremely

rewarding to feel appreciated.”

Ms. Vidya Das Arora- Gargi College

“It’s nice to have a special day for teachers although

I feel like a teacher every moment of my existence

because that is what I am and love to be.”

A much hyped movie about four friends who play on a band together “Magik” with Farhan Akhtar making his debut as a singer in Bollywood, Rock On seems to play on the twin appeal of the youthful movie and rock music. The movie clearly targets a young generation that likes its music and the idea of the story of friends and their trials and tribulations.

Aditya (Akhtar), Joe (Rampal), KD (Kohli) and Rob (Kenny) are four college friends who decide to take part in a competition that promises the winning band the opportunity to cut their own album. With excited preparations and big dreams, the band take part in the contest and this is where their roller coaster ride begins where their lives, friendships, aspirations, choices completely change… or do they? The story spans ten years with frequent flashbacks, nostalgia, and a brilliant performance by all four lead actors. Special mention needs to be given to Shabana Goswami, who plays the role of Arjun Rampal’s girlfriend and later wife for her clean acting and excellent dialogue delivery.Rock On tells the story of an average set of friends

with a not-so- average musical talent. Their very real experiences, and good casting gives the film the right touch. Though the film does not seem to meet the expectations created by the promos and sneak previews, there are definitely things working for this film which

cannot deny it a crowd. Maybe what the film does lack is to retain the tempo that is created through the music periodically in the film. Due to a loosely tied up structure and inconsistent carrying forward, the story looses its grip on the audience. A lot of little scenes in the movie—like Purab Kohli in an impromptu karaoke makes this movie for a fun, light hearted watch. The brilliant photography and gigs (albeit somewhat practiced) in the film are definitely it’s high points.

Though the movie firmly; and quite deliberately caters to a crowd that enjoys Dylan and The Doors, a sudden solo by one of the actresses of an old Hindi song

a n d their own songs in interesting Hindi rock makes the film much more real to a greater part of India.

A movie about rockstars and rock n’ roll without pretending to be “cool”. But the question is that will anyone think about it twice after walking out of the auditorium, unless of course they wish to review it? -Indrani Basu and Aniruddh Ghosal

2. At last week’s Girl Guide’s picnic, four girls were tucking into their packed lunches. Jane had muffins but Denise didn’t have orange juice. The girl who had blackcurrant juice also had scones and Jessica had blueberry juice. The girl who had cake also had strawberry juice, whereas Alice didn’t have the strawberry juice nor toast. Can you work out who had which drink and which dessert?

4. 6:00am: since the clock is losing 24 minutes every hour, for every real hour that has passed, the clock will only show 36 minutes. Since the clock shows 3:00am, we know that 180 clock minutes have passed. This therefore equals 300 real minutes and hence 5 hours. The clock stopped 1 hour ago and the time must now be 6.00am. QED.
