The terrorist group ISIS hasconquered vast swaths of Syria andthe Middle East. They are markedby their supposed religious fervour, and by their disrespect. They do notrespect women, they do not respectthe law, they do not respect life, and they most certainly do notrespect history. This is shown by the fact that, thisweek, they demolished the Templeof Bel in Palmyra, Syria. Thistemple has been standing for overtwo thousand years, and it has beenflattened.ISIS executed an 82-year old man,Khaled al-As’ad, who had spent hislife preserving antiquities in theancient city. Al-As’ad had refusedto point them to the location ofirreplaceable relics that had beenhidden to save them fromdestruction.Archeologists are frantically tryingto make complete records of asmany ancient sites in Syria as theycan, often begging help fromlocals. They are trying to save whatthey can, in the hope that they maybe able to resurrect somethingwhen the dust settles. It will not bethe same, though, not by a longshot. In their hubris, ISIS have decidedthat relics of the country’s pre-Islamic past are sacrilegious andmust be destroyed. This remindsone of Europe during the MiddleAges, and their earnest attempts tocensor great classical works of art.It also reminds one, albeit onlyvaguely, of certain efforts here inSouth Africa to erase or rewrite thepast. We do not have two thousand yearsof history. We do not have templesas old as time.We do have a history of our own, though. We have a history ofpeople who have lived and died forSouth Africa, and we should beashamed of ourselves for allowingthese attempts to erase and rewritehistory. We should be ashamed of ourselvesfor allowing statues to be moved, monuments defiled, and the historybooks to be censored. In the end, our shared history is allthat binds us as a nation, and if welose that, we stand to lose so muchmore in time. In a hundred years, orfive hundred, nobody will careabout the politics of the day, butour children’s children will surelyjudge us harshly for destroying whatshould have been theirs.

School at loggerheads withwood sellers again

The staff at HoërskoolWarmbad have expressedtheir concern about thereturn of wood vendors whochoose to conduct theirbusiness near the school. The BEAT reported on theproblem in May 2014, andwas told that the hawkerswho operate on the R516 enroute to Thabazimbi havebecome a problem forlearners and educators. At the time the school’sprincipal, Spikkels de Wet,said that the hawkers havebecome a problem especiallyat the school’s music facility.“They entered the schoolpremises and used ourbathrooms withoutpermission,” said De Wet.De Wet said that in mostcases the hawkers wouldmake use of the ditchleading to the back entranceof the school to relievethemselves. It is alleged thatthey live and sleep in thesame area near the school, and De Wet claims that thishas left the area with anunpleasant smell.A year later, it seems that thesellers have returned despitetheir removal by localauthorities.“The wood vendors have

returned and this has becomea concern for us and ourlearners. I think we shouldwrite to the municipality andinsist that they intervene inthis situation,” said De Wet.Complaints have also beenmade that wood is beingstored in and around theschool. About this, De Wetsaid that he is not aware ofwood being stored on thepremises, but that it wouldbe removed if found.Hannalie Kriek, an educatorat the school’s Music Centre, said that she is worried forher safety when teachingmusic lessons after school.“I often find that woodvendors are on the premisescollecting water from thetaps or using the bathroomswithout anyone’spermission,” she said. “It’squite worrying because wedon’t know these people orif they would hurt ourlearners.”Kriek is also concernedabout traffic congestioncaused by the wood sales.“There is a lot of congestionon the road in front of theschool sometimes, becausepeople are blocking the roadto buy wood or the sellersare blocking it to unload. Sofar no accidents havehappened yet, but somethinghas to be done,” she said.
