Lizzy Bapela

Clients and customers at the Bela-BelaLocal Municipality were surprised to seetwo security companies at the samepremises, supposedly to serve them as theysought services from the municipality.

Dissatisfied security officers of onecompany that was apparently recentlydismissed, took to the gates of themunicipality on Monday, 1 February tovoice their complaints.

During the mini-protest, the officers raisedplacards with their demands and complaintsincluding permanent positions and paymentof their salaries. They told The BEAT thatthe management at the municipality doesnot have their best interest at heart becausethey (the municipal employees) receivedtheir salaries on pay day while the securitystaff are still waiting and are not sure whenthey will get theirs. They also said that theyhave children in school with needs to bemet and bills to pay.

Speaking to The BEAT about the protestand the workers’ demands, the staff

manager Joel Nkwinika said that accordingto the information they received, themunicipal manager Morris Malulekaterminated the company’s contract andordered the municipality not to pay thestaff. He added that the newly contractedcompany commenced their dutiesimmediately and as a result, the workers sawit fit to come together and voice theircomplaints as a collective.

Nkwinika urged the workers to remainpeaceful and respectful while addressingthem. The workers headed to theircompany’s office to wait for management toaddress them after the protest. They later metwith the municipality’s manager forCorporate Services Gloria Seleka.

“During our meeting with Seleka, shepromised to give us a letter detailinginformation about our payments andcontracts. We cannot say at this point as towhat we are going to do then as we have notyet received the letter and we are not surewhat it entails,” said Nkwinika.

He said that he takesthe money that new buyers payand uses it for those demandingrefunds.

“I do things as I see fit in thisarea and whoever thinks otherwise

can come forward and complain. Those who are against myleadership can fight me in court andthose who accuse me of sellingstands illegally must produce proofbefore making such allegations,” hesaid.

Meanwhile, his uncle, BashanMojela, was also accused of sellingstands illegally and put the blameon his nephew when cornered toaccount for his actions. He said thathe only sold to one person, and iswaiting for a previous buyer todemand that money. As he wasspeaking, angry residents flocked tothe interview area and accused himof lying to the media. They said thathe sold stands to many, and thosepeople can point him out.

Bashan told The BEAT that themoney paid was actually not forselling the stands but used forcleaning the yards already sold.

In his defence, councillor Sesaneexpressed shock over hearing theallegations levelled against him. Hesaid that he knew of no suchincident and gave no suchinstruction and that Mojela wouldhave to account for the lies he toldabout him.
