This Friday, we celebrate thebirthday of one of the greatestsons of South Africa, NelsonRolihlahla Mandela (1918-2013).Across the nation, people from

all walks of life will give 67 min-utes of their day to charity inhonour of the 67 years Mandelaspent in prison. No doubt many of you, dear

readers, will also be giving yourtime to Mandela Day. It is impor-tant to remember, however, theprinciples Madiba held to in hislife. And with that in mind, hereare some quotes from the greatman.“No one is born hating another

person because of the color ofhis skin, or his background, orhis religion. People must learn tohate, and if they can learn tohate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally tothe human heart than its oppo-site.” — This is from his autobi-ography, A Long Walk to Free-dom. Nelson Mandela believedfirmly that love is the naturalstate of mankind. If you look atlittle children, ones who are tooyoung yet to have absorbed thelessons of hatred and racism thatthe world teaches, you will seethem happily playing togetherregardless of race or gender. It isonly later, when they have hadmore time to see how the worldcompartmentalizes and defineshuman beings, that they split upalong the age-old divides of blackand white, male and female. Weshould strive to be more likesmall children, who love oneanother regardless of race orgender, and accept each otherunconditionally. This is actuallyalso said in the Bible, in Mathew19:14: “Jesus said, “Let the littlechildren come to me, and do nothinder them, for the kingdom ofheaven belongs to such asthese.””“Do not judge me by my suc-

cesses, judge me by how manytimes I fell down and got back upagain.” Many things in Madiba’slife did not go according to plan. Ifhe had had his way, there wouldhave been a peaceful revolution. He certainly would never havegone to jail. The great strength ofhis character is that he nevergave up. He fell, but he got up,shouldered his burden and wenton. That is the measure of truegreatness. Nobody ever didanything right the first time.Thomas Edison, famous for theinvention of the light bulb (whichhe did not actually do, but that’sa story for another time) oncesaid: “I have not failed 700 times.I have not failed once. I havefound 700 ways that do not work. When I have eliminated all theways that do not work, I will havefound the one that does.” SamuelBecked said: If you’ve neverfailed, you’ve never tried. Itdoesn’t matter. Try again. Failagain. Fail better.”We are not living up to Madiba’s

hopes for us. We are a nationdivided, squabbling among our-selves.That doesn’t matter. We’re

trying. Next time, we’ll fail better.

Regenerating morality demands atireless understanding and interpreta-tion of the society we live in, althoughthis is determined by conducting astudy of both living areas, being ruraland urban areas respectively, asdebatably the conduct of mankinddiffers not only by nature but bylocation and the type of leadershipfound in such residence.Moral putrefaction takes stock not

only in the young generation, buthappens with significance given togenerational copying, such meaningthat the younger generation emulatesthe behaviour of the older and thusconclude that it is a good practice forsuch behaviours, whether it is trulyfitting or not.Joshua N Kudadjie in his writing;

“Towards Change and Modernization”about the Ga and Dangme people inGhana, said: “Change is inevitable, itis natural, normal and perpetual. Yetthe phenomenon of inertia is no lessreal, there is thus a paradox in theattitudes of various people towardschange, the use of new technologyand tools as well as the adoption ofnew values, practices and institutionsare all aspects of change and mod-ernization”The arguments of traditionalist and

that of academics are centralizedaround adaptation to modernizationas western and also gaining momen-tum at urban areas more easily, dueto assortment of beliefs and incursionupon entrenched, long-standingstandards, while it cultivates prin-ciples and practices that lean toprovoke turmoil and asymmetry in thesociety. There should be a consistent

embarking on indigenous sportingcodes, necessary for the communi-ties. The engagement in these typesof sports will determine the disciplineof such communities, as equallywhen such games are taking place, the lecture on their origin should beprovided.Mass literacy seminars should be

conducted, which will among otherthings bring forward motion towardsthe importance of multi-culturalengagement and how it should bringpride in being what we are.The importance of waging a mean-

ingful engagement of moral regenera-tion is by starting to invent differentapproaches other than workshopsand boardroom dialogue, the societyis decaying whilst the committeesare functioning in silos with problemsthat brews these comfort to insanityand adjusting to conducts unneces-sarily.The role of youth formations and all

the structures or organizations foundin our society is to understand that iftheir founding statements does notspeak of the implementation patternsof reclaiming the sense of our soci-ety, then there is absolutely no needto have such existing in the commu-nity, thus high ranking offices in thesociety should pump in more re-sources on campaigns and programson moral regeneration, because thesimplest reasoning is that the com-munity is suffering and dying, andwithout which there is nothing left tobe led.

Mookgophong’s Doorndraai Dam andBela Bela’s Rust de Winter resorts areamong those which will be receiving afacelift in the recently launched ReserveRenewal Project (RRP).The building of staff accommodation

and upgrading of fences will be con-ducted at the two reserves, with a total of60 job opportunities created in eachreserve. The Department will be conduct-ing Conservation Learnership pro-grammes for 21 people, bringing the totaljob opportunities created up to 615,counting other reserves. The initiative is a partnership between

the Limpopo MEC for the Department ofEconomic Development, Environmentand Tourism (LEDET), Seaparo Sekoatiand Acting CEO of the Limpopo TourismAgency (LTA) Seipati Tlaka.Stakeholders, beneficiaries, senior

government officials, community mem-bers and Tourism Industry leadersattended the event. The agency’s spokesperson, Kgatla

Ntlhekeng, said that the project is adeliberate and strategic intervention bythe National Department of EnvironmentalAffairs (NDEA) and LEDET, aimed ataddressing the current infrastructurebacklog of state-owned nature reserves.Tlaka said that the main focus of the

project is to restore, renew, develop andmaintain the ageing and dilapidatedreserve infrastructure in the province. She added that the project is also aimedat keeping the reserves competitive while

giving tourists value for money but, mostimportantly, to live up to the promise ofbeing accessible and affordable. The RRP is a joint Expanded Public

Works Programme (EPWP) initiativebetween the NDEA and LEDET, with theTLA as the implementing agent. The RRP is part of the government’s

EPWP initiative aimed, among otherthings, at giving those who do not havework, or who may have little work experi-ence, the opportunity to work and learnskills.“The difference in this EPWP initiative

is the fact that the 615 work opportunitieswere created using equitable shares bythe Department and not only the EPEPallocation from the Public Works Depart-ment. This is money that could havebeen used to appoint consultants orprivate companies to do the work, but theGovernment chose to empower localcommunities in the vicinity of thesereserves with work opportunities whiletransferring skills which they can lateruse to improve their living conditions.Other opportunities will include landrestoration through the removal ofinvasive plants which may create sec-ondary business opportunities such ascharcoal and firewood,” said Tlaka. The NDEA and LEDET have success-

fully implemented the program in 14nature reserves on fencing projects androad maintenance, which created 615work opportunities during the 2013/2014financial year. 84% of those employedby the program were youth, and 4%people living with disabilities.

Contractors at the Medupi PowerStationhad a lot of explaining to do in theirattempt to satisfy the hard-to-impressOccupational Health and Safety (OHS)Inspectors during a week-long blitzinspection. The Department of Labour inLimpopo had organised inspection, which ended on Friday, 11 July and wasfocusing on the Civil Engineering sector. The Department’s spokesperson

Johannes Mokou said that the inspec-tion forms part of their mandate toeradicate in totality, injuries, deaths anddiseases imbedded in sectors such aschemical, civil engineering and con-struction.The Department’s Provincial Chief

Director of Inspections Phaswane Tladisaid that part of the initiative is to ensurethat they are in compliance with theOHS, especially now that the construc-tion of the power station is nearing itsend. He added that history taught them that

in such instances, people start to losefocus on the important things such asincidents reporting and training of healthand safety representatives becausethere is little work to be done at thisstage.Findings exhumed during this intense

inspection include failure to display

Nothing but world-classhealth and safety standards

signs where chemicals are stored, failure to label chemical containers, failure to barricade tranches, poorhouse-keeping as well as incorrectstorage of gas cylinders.OHS Specialist in the department Carol

Mthethwa said that unfortunately onlyworld-class standards of health andsafety, especially in a construction ofthis magnitude, will be accepted.“Low standards have a tendency of

costing employees’ lives and leavingothers badly injured and this is why wewould never bend lower than we are atthe moment,” she said. She praised the contractors for

having done wonders regarding theOHS matters on site, saying that it isheartwarming to learn that somecontractors have really upped theirgame this time around, adding thatthey wish they can continue with thisgood job.Mthethwa gave a stern warning to

non-complying contractors, sayingthat this does not mean that thosefound wanting will be let off the hookthat easy.“We have issued them with several

undertakings and time-frames toattend to the findings. We will make afollow-up inspection in due course andsatisfy ourselves before anything,” shesaid.
