July, and was an initiative by the Govern-ment Communication and Information Sys-tems (GCIS) in Waterberg in partnershipwith Community Development Workers(CDWs) and home based carers from Dira-O-Direlwe dropping centre in Modimolle. The older brother is a Grade 11 learner

lives alone with his ailing younger brother. The younger brother was in Grade 7 whenhe had to drop out of school due to healthproblems.Their parents died four years ago and they

have no relatives. The older brother has theresponsibility to look after his brother, attendschool and do some piece jobs to ensurethat they have food on the table, as they donot receive foster grants due to a lack ofenabling documents.During the campaign, the officials found

that the children only had bread as a mealfor the whole day. The younger brother wassleeping because he had no strength. Thevisiting officials then bought the children

assist the orphans getting registration docu-ments such as an ID for the older brotherand a birth certificate for his younger brother. The older brother thanked the officials fortheir efforts, as he felt helpless.Ms Maria Ramoshaba, of the GCIS, told

The BEAT that the purpose of the campaignwas to inform community members on pro-grammes of the government, services ren-dered by CDWs and HBC.The GCIS distributed the July issue of gov-

ernment magazines Vukuzenzele, Pro-gramme of Action (PoA) and Youth Guide, which provides the youth with contact de-tails of tertiary institutions in South Africa.CDWs encouraged people who could not

afford to pay their water to grab the oppor-tunity offered by the municipality to registeras indigents.Ms Ramoshaba said the government has

prioritised education but still other youngpeople do not take education serious. She said schooling is still a challenge as

some young people dropped out at Grade3 and do not have enabling documents likeID books and birth certificates.

Ms Mmamoraka Masubelele, of Bela Bela,is winning the ever-present battle againstlooming unemployment by being her ownemployer. Masubelele has been running andmanaging a well-known and well-loved daycare centre for over twenty-two years.Masubelele and former colleagues, Ms

Rosina Phofu and Ms Rosina Matlala, formedTswelopele pre-school in Leseding, in theBela Bela Township, in 1989.Masubelele said that they came up with the

idea of starting a pre-school and day carecentre because there was only one crèchein the Township at that time. “We saw theneed to start another day care centre. Wewere running it from Phofu’s house, becausewe only had 30 children in our care backthen,” she explained.“A social worker, Ms Janet Chabala, advised

us to apply for funding at the Department ofSocial Development. We also registered withboth the Departments of Social Developmentand Education,” Masubelele told The BEAT.When the number of children attending

Tswelopele increased, they had to move theirpremises to the Roman Catholic Church inBela Bela. “The place was a dumping site.We cleared out all the hazardous materialsand renovated the building. We faced a huge

reality and the worst enemy of a dreamcan be your own self. Mandela had adream and strived to make it a reality andhe did it for all of us to enable us to enjoythe fruits of his difficulties today. Let us allremember the great South Africa madepossible by his efforts and let us extendour efforts to make other people’s livesbetter,” said Fambi in his preaching.Lehobye indicated that for one to becomea better person tomorrow it all dependson the surroundings one chooses and thefriends and activities we engage ourselves. He encouraged the juveniles to ensurepeople with great influence surround themat all times. He also said that the future ofa person is often a result of the decisionshe makes and encouraged the listenersnever to let their situations deprive themof a wonderful future that lies ahead. The two pastors encouraged the juve-

niles to remember their dreams and makea difference in their communities whenthey go back after being released.A representative from the juveniles ac-

knowledged the pastors and the GCIS fortheir efforts to visit and motivate them, say-ing it really inspire them to know mem-bers of the community still think of them.

Two men of God from Modimolle took ini-tiative and used their 67 minutes forMandela Day to preach to juveniles at thelocal correctional centre. Pastor FelixFambi, of the Awake Grace Ministries In-ternational, and Pastor Herman Lehobye,of the International Assemblies of God,together with Ms Maria Ramoshaba, ofthe Waterberg Government Communica-tion and Information Systems (GCIS), vis-ited the centre on Friday, 13 July, as partof their Mandela Day activities for this year. They conducted the visit under the theme

“I have a dream” and the three visitors in-teracted with the young inmates during thevisit and delivered messages of supportto them and to officials working at the cen-tre. The pastors preached from GenesisChapter 37 verse 2 to 11, which empha-sises on Joseph’s dream. The messagewas that people, especially the young of-fenders, must have a dream and pursueit to achieve it. “We all have our owndreams and a dream never dies it doesnot mater where on earth you are and thatincludes you in the centre. Every dreamhas an enemy to disabling it from being a

Tshediso is showered with love

After a terrible family tragedy in Modimolle, where Tshediso Hlwaela’s mother died, hewas left in the sole care of his grandmother. On Sunday, 3 June, Tshediso celebrated

his 5th birthday with school friends and theirparents at his school, the Lerato ChristianAcademy.Almost 100 people showed up to cel-

ebrate his birthday with him. The birthday

party was organised by Pastor ThembaMogale and Ms Brenda and Mr HendrikHorne-Ferreira.The Horne-Ferreira’s recently moved to

Modimolle, with the hope of finding grand-children to take care of since their onlygrandchildren are living in Canada. The couple decided to adopt a school and

to help needy children as much as possi-ble. Lerato Christian Academy was theschool that they chose to adopt. “The chil-dren became our grandchildren,” MsHorne-Ferreira said.Horne-Ferreira and her husband, in col-

laboration with Mogale, organised a fifthbirthday party and charity event. Attendeeswere invited to give donations Tshediso’sbirthday, as well as the school fees. Peo-ple attending the party donated an amountof R1 200 in total. The cherry on the cake was the two Sa-

maritans from Canada, who heard aboutthis event and decided to visit the school.Ms Brenda and Mr Kurt Loewen donatedR8 000 worth of school furniture to theschool, including chairs and tables. After hearing the story of Tshediso, the

Loewens paid for his school fees in ad-vance for the following year. The schooland organisers would like to thank the com-munity for their support.

Twenty-two years of passionchallenge because we did not have toilets. We had to use the bathroom that belongedto Mr Ndlovu, who lives next to the day care. Now we have toilets that were built by MrJosef Kobyane,” Masubelele said.“Since the townships of Bela Bela, such as

Mandela and Mazakhela, were formed, thenumber of children also increased. My col-leagues and I decided to split. Matlala is nowrunning her own day care called Boitumelo, and Phofu is working somewhere else,” sheexplained. There are currently 170 children at the pre-

school. Masubelele decided to take childrenfrom 2 years old and above at the day carecentre because the building there is smaller. In 2010, Eskom donated a fridge and a stove

to the day care centre. They were alsoawarded by the company for taking care ofthe furniture that was donated.Masubelele said their pre- school is in need

of a fence. “We need a new fence and weare facing a challenge because our buildingis overcrowded, it needs to be extended. Wehave been trying to save money by askingparents to donate R60 per year but we don’thave enough money to start extending,” shesaid.Masubelele and Tswelopele is certainly an

example of what can be done with a bit ofdetermination and a lot of hard work.

The ANC Youth League in Limpopo helda press conference on Wednesday to11 July to discuss outcomes of the Nel-son Mandela lecture, which took placein Shayandima Village, Vhembe Re-gion.Hundreds of members of the league

from all the districts in the provincewere bussed to the event to listen whilePresident Jacob Zuma was deliveringthe lecture, despite the statementsmade by the league’s spokesperson inthe province Mr Klaas Mabunda in themedia recently. Mr Mabunda allegedthat the league will disrupt the proceed-ings, if they are not pleased, saying theywill show the president the way out ofLimpopo.According to Mabunda, the ANCYL

took it upon itself to ensure that the mo-bilisation activities towards the gather-ing as a means to celebrate the life andtimes of the presidents of the ANC sinceits formation in 1912 went well.Mabunda claims that the league’s pro-

vincial chairperson and secretary weremanhandled for singing about deputypresident Kgalema Motlanthe andsports minister Fikile Mbalula and notabout President Zuma. One of the people who were allegedly

manhandled was Mr Wesani Sithole, from Mookgophong, He confirmed toThe BEAT he did not suffer any injuriesbecause of the incident and it is no bigdeal to him.The ANCYL in Limpopo ended YouthMonth, June, by lashing out at the ANCand expressing their concerns about

ANCYL speaks outthe conduct of the mother party. The league’s spokesperson in

Limpopo, Mr Klaas Mabunda, said thatthe ANC is using sympathy as a meansto campaign for re-election and imposea perception that the current leadershipcares for the masses. He said that the struggle for the lib-

eration of the ANC was successfullycarried out by its honest character andalways locating the people‘s interest atthe core. The league expressed concerns about

the statement that the president’s safetywill be compromised if he travelled bytrain, “as if the commuters who hap-pened to have voted for him are crimi-nals,” Mabunda said.He said the “reattempt by the presi-

dent to sympathetically make anothervow to make use of public transport par-ticularly trains, will remind people of theinconsistencies on his part to be loyalto his promises and further deepen lossof constituencies. “As we celebratedyouth month commemorating thestrength of the class of 1976, the schoolsin Limpopo experience challenges withregards to textbooks. Young people stillconstitute the higher percentage of un-employment and illiteracy regardless ofthe president’s promise to create over500 000 jobs. The National Youth De-velopment Agency is turned into a po-litical league in the expense of the pro-vision of support services to young peo-ple. In the events of the looming crimi-nal activities, a competent national com-missioner is replaced with a woman whonever even saw a robbery unless on tel-evision,” Mr Mabunda alleged.

The lives of employees in the taxiIndustry and hospitality sectors willchange to the better, thanks to theminimum wage increment an-nouncement by the Department ofLabour. The department spokesperson in

Limpopo, Mr Johannes Mokou, in-dicated that the increments, whichwill take effect throughout the coun-try, would hit the grounds from 1 July.He said the current minimum

wages on hospitality sector for em-ployers with more than 10 employ-ees is sitting at R 2323.87 per month, while employers with less than 10employees are paying a minimumwage of R2084.52.Assistant Director from the Depart-

ment in Limpopo, Mr MorganMokwana, said these rounds of in-crements would see employers withmore than 10 employees hiking theirwages to R 2495.80 per month andthose with less paying R 2240.60 per

Minimum wage incrementmonth.Shifting focus to the taxi industry

sector, Mokwana said the incre-ments would see the taxi drivers rak-ing in wages amounting to R2449.90 per month, the sameamount that will go to administrationworkers. He said this is a giant step up from

the previous year’s R 2160 permonth.Mokwana added rank marshals

would pocket R 231, 40 more fromtheir previous R1728, 80 per month,a move that will shift them to a stag-gering R1959, 40 per month. He saidother employees within the sectorwho are not elsewhere specifiedwould hike from the previous R1512,03 per month to a minimum wage ofR1713, 70.Still on the taxi industry sector,

Mokwana said if an employer re-quires an employee to sleep over ata place other than where the em-ployee resides, the employer musteither pay the employee the amount

of R279, 93 per night or arrange ac-commodation for the employee.Turning to systems in place to en-

sure compliance, head of depart-ment in the province Mr AlbertTshidavhu said the inspectoratewould randomly do the spot checksat the affected workstations to moni-tor if the increments are put on prac-tice.“If employers are found not to be

complying with these amendments, they must be ready to face the fullmight of the law. Compliance is forthe benefit of both employers andemployees, therefore it is necessary. This is why we have competent andcapable personnel at labour centresto assist them when they encounterchallenges,” said Tshidavhu.About these issues, The BEAT in-

South Africa is in the grip of an in-credible cold front and even here,in the Waterberg where the climateis supposed to be warmer, we areall feeling the cold cutting throughflesh and bone.It is in these times that we cannot

help but think about the poorest ofthe poor who do not even have ablanket to keep them warm. This week The BEAT reports on

various 67 minutes projects, in hon-our of Nelson Mandela Day. One ofthese articles is about two childrenwho are living alone after their par-ents died. One of the brothers issick and, when the communityworkers visited his home, he wastoo weak to wake up. He was soweak because of hunger! The reason why these children are

suffering so terribly is that theyhave no guidance and no knowl-edge of how to access governmentgrants and schemes that are de-signed to help them. What is theuse of all the grand schemes if itdoes not help those that it is in-tended to help? The children also had a problem

because they did not have thedocumentation needed to apply forthe help that is available to them. The community workers vowed tohelp them obtain these documents. These good Samaritans should beapplauded for their efforts, but onecannot help wondering how manymore of these kids are out therethat are also in dire need of urgenthelp. How many children are hungry

and cold, because they simply donot know how to access the docu-ments that are needed for them toreceive help? This is where the community

comes in. These children are notl iv ing on their own on amountaintop somewhere. No, theyare living and functioning within acommunity. It is the community’sresponsibility and obligation to lookout for the children that have tofend for themselves. These children l iving in child

headed households did not ask tobe orphans. Their parents weretaken from them by fate and theyhad no say in the matter. It is nottheir fault that they are helplesswithout adult guidance. When you are busy with your 67

minutes for Mandela, ask yourselfif you cannot be more involved inyour community on a permanentbasis. There are thousands of chil-dren out there who need adults toguide them and help them survive.

What type of South Africa do wewant to live in? What type of SouthAfrica have we created? Are ourtowns safe and prosperous placesthat we can raise our kids? Whatabout challenges at hand thatthreaten development and servicedelivery? The book of Proverbs has a few

ideas on the role of council in gov-ernment. Proverbs 20:26, “A wiseking winnows out the wicked; hedrives the threshing wheel overthem.” Proverbs 12:15, “The way ofa fool seems right to him, but a wiseman listens to advice.” Proverbs19:20, “Listen to advice and acceptinstruction, and in the end you willbe wise.” Proverbs 24:6, “… for wag-ing war you need guidance, and forvictory many advisers.”The challenge lies in making a

pledge, inspired by the words ofMadiba, “During my lifetime I havededicated myself to this struggle ofthe African people. I have foughtagainst white domination, and I havefought against black domination. Ihave cherished the ideal of a demo-cratic and free society in which allpersons live together in harmonyand with equal opportunities. It is anideal, which I hope to live for and toachieve. But if needs be, it is an idealfor which I am prepared to die.”1. Acknowledge that we are all

equally subject to the duties and re-sponsibilities of citizenship and areall equally entitled to the rights, privi-leges and benefits of citizenship, without regard to race or gender.2. Respect, protect and promote

the supremacy of our Constitutionand the rule of law. Teach our chil-dren to do the same.3. Be resolved to live as equals, to

live in peace and harmony, to be freefrom fear and want and to seek abetter life.4. Expect our multi-party system of

democratic government to ensureaccountability, responsiveness andopenness in our interaction withthose who serve us governing SouthAfrica.5. Undertake to do our best to heal

the divisions of the past, improve thequality of life of all citizens and freethe potential of all who live in ourlovely land.6. So as to achieve these worthy

objectives, we promise to hold ourpublic administration to the exactingstandards, values and principles, which govern public servants, andwe shall co-operate with them in allways, which enhance efficiency, economy and effectiveness in theaffairs of state and the delivery ofservices.7. Honour the principles of Ubuntu

and Batho Pele in our efforts to builda united nation. A united nation asone under God.If we all take this pledge and hon-

our our commitment to it, we canmake our communities a betterplace to live in.

The Bela Bela Education Advocacy Group(BBEAG), a group of people who areworking hard to boost education in BelaBela, is in need of a boost themselves. Some of the BBEAG members were ac-

tively helping during the two week longwinter schools in Bela Bela as volunteertutors.BBEAG Marketing & Sponsorships Co-

ordinator, Mr Tshepo Matjila said in state-ment, “We have, over the past fewmonths, received numerous requests tohelp worthy learners with registration feesand needy learners with financial support. We have decided to write a small note toclarify a few things.”“Ordinarily BBEAG would, without blink-

ing, support needy and worthy learnersand students with financial support, butwe are facing severe financial constraintsas most of our financial backers are them-selves facing one financial problem oranother,” Matjila explained.“This problem is obviously exacerbated

by the global liquidity crunch which definesmuch of modern day Europe andAmerica. BBEAG, as a rule, usually re-wards learners at the beginning of the yearbased on principal and teacher recom-mendations, as we did this year throughour BBEAG Kick-start Program. We arenot even sure if we would be able to doso in 2013,” he said.“We are working hard on many other

financial plans to help improve our abilityto help Bela Bela’s needy and deservingand, should something come up, we willbe sure to help many other people wholook upon as their last beacon,” Matjilapromised in the statement.Sello Makhubela, Programme Coordi-

Charity walk for Education reaches thousands of children in Africadistributed along the way.The main objective of the walk was to

make people aware of the educationaldifficulties some schools experience. The two co-founders of Mamma-AfrikaHampers & MAfrika Projects, MessrsJacques Buys and Dana Louw, did thewalking.“We will walk all the way, toshare in the pain of the thousands ofchildren that have to walk up to threehours to get to the nearest school daily. They have the drive and we want to sup-

port them in providing some educatio-nal materials,” Louw said in an inter-view with The Post. Louw is an oldlearner of Hoërskool Warmbad and iscurrently living in Bela-Bela. The edu-cational walk brought Louw and Buysthrough Bela-Bela on Tuesday, 10 July.Next on their route were Settlers, Mar-ble Hall, Groblersdal, Middelburg,Waterval Boven, Nelspruit and Komati-poort. Their walk will reach its conclu-sion today (Friday, 20 July) at Maputo

in Mozambique.“We have had some amazing expe-

riences, met some great people andstayed at some awesome places. Towere able to see the smiles on the facesof the children were priceless and madeall the pain and sacrifice worth it.” Louwsaid. For more information about the walk,

BBEAG in need of financial boostnator of the BBEAG said that the globalfinancial crisis had a very strong impacton all non-governmental organisations(NGO). He said that the lack of financialresources has a direct impact on all NGO’sas agents of change. The crisis also hitthe BBEAG, as an educational NGO, veryhard.“The situation with the National Lotteries

Board has not been any kinder to us ei-ther, as we have been waiting for possiblefunding from 2010. We are runningBBEAG-light right now, meaning many ofour programs are grossly under-fundedand we constantly rely on innovation andmembers’ charity to continue with someprograms like Afternoon Tutor Classes andVacation School Programs. We, therefore, regret but we cannot support many wor-thy learners and students who come to usfor financial assistance at the moment, aswe lack the means and wherewithal our-selves, to conduct many of our pressingand much-needed programs,” Makhubelasaid. The BBEAG promised to continue to

share information related to bursaries andinternships from various organisations andthey urge their friends to email informa-tion on the subject [email protected] or to collaboratewith them to support some of the learnerswho desperately need help.Alternatively, friends of the BBEAG could

make donations BBEAG bank account atFNB, 62264504509, Centurion branch. The BBEAG ask that donors use theirname organisation name as reference.“We wish all the learners/students all the

best in their endeavours to get an oppor-tunity to study — because, ultimately, webelieve Bela Bela will be the main benefi-ciary of our charity,” Matjila said.
