Concerned residents of Bela-Bela whosaid that they are less privileged haveoccupied land originally intended for theconstruction of a school near Extension8, and are now complaining that themunicipality may evict them forcibly. The BEAT was called to the scene of a

gathering of residents under policeescort, where they were addressed byNeo Moloko of the local EFF. Theresidents made it clear that despite theinitial handouts of land coming from amember of the EFF, the majority of themarrived there of their own initiative. The problems started when Sunday

Modike of the EFF told The BEAT thatthey had been alerted that people wereoccupying swathes of land, allegedlyassisted by Lasi Maswanganyi of theEFF. Modike added that when theyasked Maswanganyi about the matter,he told them that he had spoken tosenior members of the EFF, and wasfollowing the orders of the EFF in Bela-Bela.Two women who wished to remain

anonymous told The BEAT that they hadheard that there was land going around, and had enquired about the rumours. One of them said that she already had ashack in the settlement going up tere, while the other was also searching formore information so that she could alsoclaim her stand.Maswanganyi told The BEAT that he is

working for the people, and cannot waitfor indecisive leaders to give the peopleland. He added that he is pioneering theestablishment of the new section, to becalled Malema View, while the current

Land grab becomes an issue

and former mayors are busy fightingeach other.“I got served by the sheriffs of the court

on Monday and now I have to face acourt case regarding the issue. The EFFin Bela-Bela is falling apart now, andthose who have already gotten what theywanted from the organization are nowreluctant toward the organization. Whilethey are busy with their matters, I willcontinue to work for the people andserve the organization selflesslybecause I love it,” he said.Dora Tlhoale (53) said that she had

built her shack in the new sectionbecause her stand at 8371 had beenhanded over to someone else, and saysthat the municipality has been draggingtheir feet in the matter. She complainedthat she has been robbed of her stand inMandela Village despite assurancesfrom the Department of Housing, and isnow fearful that it may happen again. She has been staying in a dilapidatedshow house for over 15 years whilewaiting for the municipality to sort outthe issue.Damaris Munyai (43) has six children

and is raising two orphans besides. Shesays that she is staying with her parentswith many other occupants, and thespace is not enough, so she decided tosquat at the new section because shehas been waiting since 2010 for thestand she registered for.“I squeezed myself in with the others

and am not prepared to move until themunicipality sorts out our problems. They can make a plan to relocate us,”she said. The municipality could not be reached

for comment.

from Vaalwater, Leseding and surroundingfarms should be first on the priority list. These students should be activelyengaged; they should visit game farms, attend workshops, experience what foreigntourists experience and be taught to lovenature, animals and the environment as awhole. Carnage on South Africa’s roadsremain a concern as 1 368 peoplelost their lives over the 2014/2015festive season, with 193 fatalitiesregistered for the four-day Easterlong weekend alone in 2014.Head-on collisions are cited as theleading cause of death on SouthAfrica’s roads, with around 40% offatalities being pedestrians. In an effort to make a difference

Cartrack joined hands with FuryMotor Group to provide support toNetCare 911’s Rapid InterventionUnit which offers assistance andsupport over the coming weekend,a time when road accident victimsand emergency servces personnelneed support most. The RapidIntervention Unit will be stationedalong the N3 route to Kwazulu-Natal at Van Reenen’s Pass, anaccident hot spot, and will attendto any incidents in the vicinity.“An accident scene is normally

accompanied by a certain degreeof chaos that emergencypersonnel need to navigate inorder to assist accident victims,”said Peter de Dock, Group Riskand Credit Manager and FuryMotor Group. “More often than not, road users who are involved in anaccident are frantic and not surewhat to do.”According to Neil Visser, Netcare

911’s Regional OperationsManager for Gauteng West, yourfirst priority is to remain calm andensure that nobody is injured and/or may need assistance, andassist the injured until help arrives.Once this is done, collect asmuch information as possible.“Try to get an eyewitness to the

incident as this will corroborateyour story to your insurer,” saysVisser.Netcare 911 recommends

exchanging the following details:* Name and surname* ID number* Telephone numbers* Vehicle registration numbers* If the other driver is aprofessional driver (Taxi, delivery truck or ambulance)they should be in possessionof a valid Professional Driver’sPermit (PDP) which can beseen on the driver’s license. Ifthis is not valid, take a photo.Take photos of the following:* The damage to your vehicle.* All the damage to the othervehicle both old and new, asoften other parties will try toclaim for old damage.* The overall scene.* Your vehicle from thedirection you were travellingin, indicating brake or skidmarks.* The direction from which theother party was travelling.* License disks of bothvehicles.

It is always a good idea to haveyour mobile phone handy, and tohave a first-aid kit in your car. Inthe event of an accident or whenyou come across an accident, remember to park your vehiclesafely, in such a way that you donot obstruct emergency vehicles, with your hazard lights on,” saysVisser. “Ensure that you know a

national emergency servicesnumber such as 082-911 or 10117or 112. Try to provide theemergency operations centre withas much information as possible. The agent will normally guide youthrough the process and will mostlikely insist on your telephonenumber in the event that they needto call you back, the sceneaddress and visible landmarks, what is happening at the moment, and the patient’s condition.”If emergency personnel arrive at

an accident scene where a patientis unconscious, they will completetreatment and then will most likelylook around in the vehicle foridentification.“Good sources are cell phones,

from where we will either look fornumbers stored under ICE (InCase of Emergency), or the lastdialled numbers. However, thesefunctions often do not workbecause phones are locked andwe can’t access the information. We also look in the debris in thevehicle for any documents withidentification such as businesscards, wallets and paperwork. As alast resort, we may trace thevehicle’s registration numberthrough Metro Police or SAPS.”Juan Marais of Cartrack, a

leading vehicle tracking andrecovery, fleet management andtelematics service provider, saysthat an important aspect whichmany overlook is the use ofmedical bracelets.“If you have an autistic child, or if

you suffer from epilepsy, or if youare allergic to certain medication, among others, then wearing someform of medical bracelet is vitallyimportant,” says Marais. “Not onlywill it provide emergency personnelwith critical information they needto give you the best possible carein the fastest possible time, but itwill speak for you when you areunable to do so.”The possibility of being in an

accident is a topic that mostpeople avoid at all costs, and yet itis something that demandsconsideration.“Being informed and knowing

what you need to do to secure thebest possible care in a moment ofneed will not only help emergencypersonnel on the scene but canultimately save your life,”concludes Marais.
