GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE

Brother Knights,

Our Lumen Christi Council has more than 300 members. But only 60 members appear

to be active at any given time. Our Retention Committee is in the process of reaching

out to our members who we haven’t seen in a while.

Our goal is to identify the reasons why members do not participate. Some may want to

participate but are not able and in need of assistance. If that is your situation and you

have not yet heard from a member of our Retention Committee, please don’t wait for

them to contact you, you can contact me directly at [email protected]

or call me at 214-507-5876. Let us see how we may be able to help you.

If you have not joined in any of the many programs our council offers lately, it would be helpful to understand why you

have chosen not to participate. We value your membership in the Knights of Columbus. Your participation even on a

limited basis will help our council serve our families, our parish and our community even better.

Our next business meeting is on May 15 in Fellowship Hall at All Saints. We have a community meal starting at 6:30 pm.

Wives are invited to join us for dinner and can attend the Ladies Auxiliary meeting while we have our business meeting.

The May menu includes Spinach Salad with Fresh Strawberries and Feta Cheese, Corn Flake Crusted Chicken Breast, Sweet

Corn with Orange, Tarragon and Basil Butter. The cost of the meal is $8.00 per person. If you plan to attend the

community meal, please make your reservation by Friday, May 12. Send an email to [email protected]

with the number of people who will attend.

I hope you can join us soon.

Michael Greene, GK, PFN

Save The Date: Corporate Communion, Officers Installation and Awards Banquet

The date is Saturday, June 24 – mark your calendars! The evening will start off with our Corporate Communion at the 5:00

pm Mass. Please join us for the opening procession into Mass led by Color Corps members of Ch ristopher Columbus

Assembly 2266. Following Mass there will be a free reception in Fellowship Hall which will include wine and cheese, beer

and nuts, as well as olives and crackers prior to the Officer Installation.

Following the Officer Installation, we will feast on Woody’s B’s BBQ including Smoked Salmon with crackers, whipped

cream cheese and capers, Angus smoked beef tenderloin medallions with horseradish sauce, lean pulled pork, juicy

smoked chicken off the bone, smoked chicken Mac n’ Cheese, gourme t red potato salad, sweet and tangy Coleslaw, Rolls

and fresh baked Fudge Ripple Chocolate Chip Cookies. The price is $20.00 per person.

After our meal, doors to Fellowship Hall will open to all as we will recognize our Knight of the Year, Family of the Ye ar,

Rookie of the Year as well as the Service and Leadership Award winners in our Annual Awards Ceremony. We will also

recall our successes and activities in the 2016-2017 fraternal year as we bring back our slide show presentation.

Come and celebrate with your brother knights and their families and look back at what we accomplished this year. And

maybe get a glimpse of what is to come in Fraternal Year 2017-2018. -articles submitted by Mike Greene

Tamales Sales Help Needed May 20-21 & May 27-28 At the upcoming tamales sales, we will again need your help to make

it a success.

At 7 am on both Saturdays, four to five men are needed to position the freezer, stock tamales, set up the generator, tables and chairs ,

post signage, inflate balloons and set up the credit card readers.

The tamales sales will be at the bank parking lot, east of the church,

from 7:30 am to 4 pm. On Saturday four to five men are needed to man the booth and sell the tamales (in service sales help will be

provided). Please consider volunteering three to four hours during

the day to insure adequate coverage.

At 4 pm additional help is needed to move the operation from the bank building to the church courtyard area. After the 5 pm Mass, we

have a 30 minute window to sell tamales. After Mass, we will secure the set up in the storage area, across from the garage.

On both Sundays, we start at 7:30 am to set up operations, to sell Tamales after the 7:45, 9:15 and 11 am Masses. After each Mass,

four to five men are needed to sell Tamales. At 12:45 we will break down and secure our operation.

Your help is needed and appreciated to make our tamales sales successful. Signup at our business meeting on May 15 or contact Fred Kellner via email at [email protected] or phone (214) 770-0354 to offer your services and set your work schedule.

Nominating Committee Slate of Officers for Election

The nominating committee prepared a slate of candidates for election which

was announced at our April business meeting. That list is displayed at left.

Council elections will be held at our next business meeting on May 15. Other

nominations may be made from the floor until the election voting begins.

Only members who are in good standing and who have been initiated in the

first three degrees of the Order are eligible to hold office. No member shall

hold more than one office at the same time. You are free to nominate

yourself or someone else, but please check with the person you wish to

nominate about their desire to serve. Officers and Directors of our Council

are expected to attend the monthly Officers and Directors Meeting and the

monthly Business Meeting.

If there is a contested election (more than one person running for an officer

position), the election of officers is by ballot. A majority of all votes cast shall

be necessary to elect. The Grand Knight shall appoint two members to act as Tellers. After all who are entitled to do so have

voted, the ballot shall be declared closed and the Tellers shall then proceed to count the votes – article submitted by Vic Owen

Lumen Christi Scholarships Offered Lumen Christi Council 13520 will be offering two $1,000 dollar scholarships for the 2017

fall semester. We would very much like to have more participation this year so if you know

anyone who has the qualifications as noted below please get them involved. Also, if you

have any good ideas on how to drum up more interest among the high school seniors for

this great opportunity please let Grand Knight Mike Greene or Scholarship chairmen Larry

Brennan know at one of upcoming meetings. The following promotion will appear in the

church bulletin and other appropriate publications.

SCHOLARSHIPS

The Lumen Christi Council is now accepting applications for college scholarships for

parishioners at All Saints Catholic Church. This year the Council is offering TWO $1,000 DOLLAR scholarships. The scholarships

are for an undergraduate education in a University, College, Junior College, Technical School, Business School or Seminary. The

scholarship will be awarded primarily on scholastic performance, community service, established need (as set forth in a personal

statement) and association with the Knights of Columbus Council 13520 or Squires Circle 5717. A committee of impartial Knights

will determine who will be awarded the scholarship. To apply, interested applicants must fill out an application form and return

it to the address indicated. The application form can be obtained from the All Saints Web site (http//www.allsaintsdallas.org).

Click on “Scholarship application” located next to the Knights of Columbus emblem and Graduation cap at the bottom right of

Retention Committee Reaching Out to Membership The retention committee is currently reaching out to members of our council who have not yet paid dues for this year or in

some cases members who have not paid their dues for multiple years. We value your membership in the Knights of Columbus.

We don’t want to see your membership lapse, so if you are not in a position to pay your dues at this time, please contact the

Grand Knight, Michael Greene at [email protected] or call 214-507-5876.

If, however, you are no longer interested in being a member of the Knights of Columbus and/or have interests elsewhere, we

Texas State Convention Highlights

- continued from page 1 -

Redemptoris Mater Seminary assisted as altar servers. The Color Corps was out

in force in support of our clergy with more than 100 members leading the

procession into the Mass.

After the Mass, the two days of official convention business began with the

opening invocation and remarks from Bishop Burns and then the “State of the

State” by State Deputy Douglas Oldmixon.

Bishop Burns was very gracious in his opening comments and welcoming

everyone to Dallas. He remarked about

a T-shirt, which Alaska visitors are so

enthralled to buy, which showed Alaska

as compared to Texas in size, which drew

huge laughter from the audience. The

state deputy in rebuttal as Bishop Burns

was leaving the ballroom, remarked that

if all the federal government owned sea

shore of Alaska was taken into

consideration, Alaska would only be one

fifth the size of Texas.

The business meeting then opened with

reports from the various state committees, reading and approval of resolutions and election of delegates to the Supreme Convention.

All the reports and resolutions are included in the Convention Supplement and will be available for review at our next busine ss

meeting. The booklet will also be filed with council archives.

Supreme Chaplain, Archbishop William E Lori was the guest speaker at the State Banquet on

Saturday. He spoke on Religious Freedoms and how the Knights of Columbus have alway s

supported this and the need to step up our support of our Bishops, priest and the Church.

The Dallas hospitality suite was hosted by the Holy Smokers from Councils 11862 with Council

12484 providing extra support over the weekend and the Dallas Diocese Fourth Degree serving

on Thursday. There was plenty of food and drink and a great place to meet knights and their

ladies from all over the state.

The ladies were not left out. The Ladies Luncheon on Saturday featured the “Bad Habits from

the Disorder of Twisted Sisters”. They performed and were the highlight of the luncheon. They

even stayed around for pictures. On Sunday Morning, the Ladies Breakfast included a

presentation by Deacon Roy Mellon (see related article on page 8) who talked about his work as

a Military Chaplin.

The final day of the convention started with our annual Memorial Mass with our State Chaplain, the Most Reverend Joe Vasquez ,

Bishop of Austin, as principal Celebrant and Homilist. He was joined at the altar by Most Reverend Plácido Rodríguez, Bishop Emeritus

of Lubbock and Reverend Lloyd Morris, DDC Chaplain. Lumen Christi Council members Dick Bové, Dan Gorman, Raymond Martini,

Felipe “Phil” Mendoza, Deacon Frank Milliken and Cipriano Munoz were among the more than 600 Knights remembered at this

memorial Mass. Again, the Color Corps was out in force with more than 80 members leading the opening and closing processions in

to and out of Mass.

There is always a lot going on at the State Convention and Stan Tax and I were honored to be the Council’s Delegates to the Convention. -article submitted by Mike Greene, augmented by Chris Diaz and Roy Rabenaldt; pictures taken by Chris Diaz

Cross bearer Miguel Rodriguez led the opening procession on

Saturday morning with fellow Redemptoris Mater Seminarians, Joao

Freitas, Angelo Calderon, Esteban Alaman and Jeisson Bohorquez.

Over 100 Color Corps members turned out for the opening Mass in support of our clergy. Fourth Degree members from Lumen

Christi Council who suited up were Jack Ayers, FN, PGK; Mike Greene, GK, PFN; Stan Schwieterman and Stan Tax.

Redemptoris Mater Seminarians David Piquer, Fabian Viracacha, Luiz Alves, Isaac Velez and

Freddy Almanzar assisted at the Sunday Mass.

State Convention Country Store

On April 28 and 29, Council 13520 hosted the Country Store at the Texas State Council

Knights of Columbus 113th Annual Convention. It a nutshell, it was a success! We were able

to guestimate our product sales pretty well and had only a few things left over. We certainly

could have sold more camo hats, but we reopened the website for additional sales

This is the third time we have been

chosen to run this for the Diocese of

Dallas and the fourth time we

participated. It is a real challenge and

an honor. We started planning

meetings back in the October

timeframe for this effort. The Diocese

of Dallas usually hosts the convention

every three years. We will most likely be called upon again in three years.

We had 26 Knights and one Lady show up for duty. This made it easy for all. As with all events, numbers and timing are the key.

The store required a lot of sitting around but suddenly BOOM! You have 200 Knights from all over the State at the store buying

shirts, hats, travel mugs and other items. It was fast and furious for an hour.

Big thanks to Joe Mock for getting more product printed up on Friday night and delivering it Saturday morning. Over and

beyond!! Shout out to Fred Kellner being there for every shift on both days. Fred, you are the man.

From Joe and me, thanks all who worked the Country Store. We understand the average age of Friday being 67 was somewhat

expected, the good news is that the average age went down to 61 on Saturday. -article submitted by Doyle Kitchen; pictures taken by Chris Diaz,

Seminarian Profile

Stephen Ingram

I was born in Austin in 1987 as the first of two boys. I was educated at Catholic schools from 1st

grade through high school. As I grew up, I took from my father a passion for singing, both as a

cantor and in the choir, and for computers. I began to serve at the altar both at my school and at

my home parish in 5th grade and continued through high school, during which time I also was

trained as a sacristan. My father and my grandfather were both active Knights of Columbus, so I

became an unofficial squire at a young age, joining the Order as soon as I was able. While I attended

Catholic schools, I didn't consider the priesthood as an option when I graduated fr om high school,

so I went to the University of Texas at Dallas, where I earned a degree in electrical engineering. When I came to Dallas for

college, I began attending All Saints parish and volunteered with the youth ministry program. As a group, we challe nged one

another to grow deeper in our relationships with Christ, especially through a weekly hour of adoration. In this holy hour, du ring

a regular litany for vocations, I heard God calling me to enter the seminary.

I was sent to Holy Trinity Seminary in Irving for my first two years of philosophical studies. While there, I assisted with the RCIA

program at Holy Family of Nazareth parish in Irving and served for a monthly hour of adoration for vocations on the University

of Dallas campus. My first summer assignment as a seminarian was back at All Saints, where I assisted the youth and young

adult ministry, and the RCIA program. During my last year at Holy Trinity, I served as a volunteer chaplain at Children's Hospital

in Dallas.

The transition from philosophy to theological studies was a difficult time of discernment for me. I saw many of my classmates

discerning out of the seminary and the ones that did remain were being sent to DC for their studies while I was asked to continue

in Houston. As I struggled with accepting God's will for my life, he sent me a great blessing: the bishop wanted one more

seminarian to go to DC, and that one was me! With God's support for my vocation, I could continue without doubts.

After attending a summer spiritual program for seminarians at Creighton University in Omaha, I began my theological studies

at Theological College in Washington, DC, taking classes at the Catholic University of America. For my first two years there, I

served Sunday Masses at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the largest Catholic church in the

country and the site of Pope Francis' Mass canonizing St. Junipero Serra in 2005. I worked with the Little Sisters of the Poo r,

visiting the elderly in their care. I also worked as a volunteer chaplain for Providence Hospital in DC for a year. During two

summers, I was blessed to have the experience of spending ten weeks in Costa Rica learning and improving my grasp of Spanish.

Last year, I was assigned to St. Ann in Coppell for a Pastoral Year, learning firsthand what the life of a parish priest is like. There,

I was able to engage in many ministries and assist the priests with their service to the people of the parish. I am especiall y

grateful to have been involved in the programs focused on evangelization. It was wonderful to see so many people sharing their

faith and their struggles with one another, and finding God where they had not seen Him before.

Since I have returned to DC to finish my seminary studies, I have been working at St. Michael the Archangel parish in Silver

Spring, MD. It has been a challenge to manage both seminary studies and parish ministry, but that challenge has helped me to

grow closer to God and to His people. In all of this, I have seen God constantly at work in my life, though my friends and mentors,

and even through the difficulties I face. It has become clear to me that God is always in control, even though it may not see m

so. The ways that God has placed solutions to my problems in the world, often as a ch ain of events that began before I became

involved or that were entirely outside of my scope, have shown me how He is both apart from us, in His holiness, and among

us, in His love. I look forward to my ordination as a sign of that holiness and love being m ade a permanent source of strength in

my life.

God bless,

Stephen Ingram

Seminarian Profile

Michal Markiewicz

Dear Knights,

My name is Michal Markiewicz and I a seminarian at the Redemptoris Mater Diocesan Seminary in Dallas, now preparing to be ordained a transitional deacon.

I come from a city in northwest Poland called Bydgoszcz. I was born in 1987, as the first of two brothers, to a traditional but not practicing Catholic family. For a long time when I was growing

up, the belief in God remained for me only a traditional value of which I had no personal experience. It was not until the catechesis of the Neocatechumenal Way that I began to discover that God really is and He has a beautiful plan for my life. How could I have imagined that one day I will b e sent to a missionary

seminary as far away as Dallas, Texas! A crucial moment in discerning God’s plan for my life was the pilgrimage with the vocational center to the sanctuary of Matemblewo in Northern Poland, where the Virgin Mary is venerated as Pregn ant with Our Lord. It was there that for the first time I have discovered the call to the priesthood. And now I am to be ordained in the

cathedral of Dallas dedicated to Our Pregnant Lady, the Virgin of Guadalupe!

In high school I was very much interested in the Polish language and literature to the point of participating in the nationwide competition of literary criticism. I was even awarded with a special recognition that allowed me to enter the best universities in Poland. At the same time, however, I believed that I can find true happiness in loving God with all my heart, all my mind and all

my strength. What it meant for me was to risk and to abandon the prospect of my studies in order to enter the seminary right after finishing high school. By lottery I was sent to receive my formation in the Redemptoris Mater Seminary in Dallas and today I can say that I am very grateful for my lot!

I arrived in Dallas in December of 2006. After learning English for some time, I soon started to study philosophy at th e University of Dallas. After graduating from college, I have studied theology in the master’s program of the same school. After graduation, I was sent for a missionary experience to the Holy Land for three years. I have returned in 2016 to complete my the ological studies, this time in Denver, Colorado. After ordination to the diaconate, I will have to go back to Denver for the fourth ye ar of

theology.

During all these years, I have participated in the evangelization, for example, by joining the catechists team of the Neocatechumenal Way in Santa Clara Church in Oak Cliff. I have also spent time learning the pastoral work at Saint Thomas Aquinas Church in Dallas.

Along the way of formation, I have understood that my vocation is not my own but that it belongs to the whole Church. It is thanks to the Church, to that concrete community of believers that accompanied me throughout all this time, that I am now in the seminary. I am especially grateful to the Knights of Columbus who have supported me from the first years of my studies in Dallas. I am very grateful to the Lord and to all of you who have accompanied me along the way to this very day. Please, continue

to pray for me as I approach the day of ordination that I may be a holy, humble and missionary priest.

Thank you.

Michal

A Founding Notion: Protecting the Breadwinner’s Income

While jobs may be safer in

2017, accidents, injuries,

and illnesses that can impact

your ability to work still

happen. Most, in fact, do

not happen on the jobsite or

place of employment. Did

you know that a 2011 study

revealed that more than 95

percent of the long-term

disability claims on file

were not work related?

The Knights have always

sought to protect members’

families from the “loss” of a

breadwinner. I’m sure you

know all about Father

McGivney’s vision for our

insurance program. But you

may not know that Father

McGivney also wanted to

find a way to help members

who couldn’t work because

of an illness. After all, the

“loss” of the breadwinner

does not have to mean that

person’s death; it can also

mean the loss of the

breadwinner’s income.

Consider that loss for a

moment. How would your

family fare if a source of

income suddenly stopped?

Could a dual-income family

manage on one income?

What about young families

with a working father and a

mother who cares for the

children? What if his

income halted due to an

accident or illness?

I’ve heard some people say

they have coverage at work,

but too many aren’t sure

what this coverage entails,

how much income it would

provide or for how long.

Having this protection

counts for something,

certainly, but it isn’t

“yours”; it’s provided by

the company for which you

work at their discretion. It

could be eliminated

tomorrow.

That’s where a personally-

owned disability income

insurance product, like

Income Armor, comes into

play. It can offer valuable

income replacement in the

event of an injury or illness.

If you have a job, you must

know about this coverage.

So, contact me to start

looking at how we can fit

this into your plan of

protection today.

PRO-LIFE AMERICANS now

face a historic opportunity. Not

since the Supreme Court

decided Roe v. Wade in 1973 has the United States

government had so many high-

ranking officials who are pro-

life. Consider this: The House

majority leader and the speaker

of the House are strongly pro-

life. So are the Senate majority

leader and the chairman of the

Senate Judiciary Committee.

Both the president and the vice

president as well as 17

members of their cabinet are

pro-life. The Compendium of

the Social Doctrine of the Church, issued by the

Pontifical Council for Justice

and Peace in 2004, describes

the right to life as “ the first

right” (155) and states: “ Promoting human dignity

implies above all affirming the

inviolability of the right to life,

from conception to natural

death, the first among all rights and the condition for all other

rights of the person” (553).

Today, we have in America a

new pro-life moment. Now is

the time for Catholics and

other pro-life Americans to

seize this moment.”

Vivat Jesus!
