The End-of-Year Picnic in May is moving….not to Cali-fornia, but to a new time in the Binkley church year:

September! May is such a full month with recitals and school activities, so we’ll picnic now in the fall. Still the same fun: cooking out, games, enjoying one another.

CHRISTIAN FORMATION NEWS

The 2013 Binkley Habitat Team thanks everyone for praying for us during our work week with East Cooper Habitat for Humanity in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Our skilled team of rookies and veterans painted a huge building interior to support the Low Country Orphan Relief program and put up hardy plank siding on three fourths of a Habitat home. God granted us safe work and a strong ocean all week long.

CHILDREN'S MUSICAL WORKSHOP

BAPTIST YOUTH CAMP

Please be in prayer for 29 youth and adults who will

be experiencing God’s grace on the mountaintop with

9 other churches at BYC June 30 through July 5. We

will be studying the Exile narrative from scripture and

embracing God’s presence during our separation from

our beautiful Binkley home.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY "A BRUSH WITH KINDNESS"

Binkley’s Outreach Committee is considering a Habitat for Humanity home improvement project called “A Brush with Kindness”. The purpose of the program is to improve existing homes in the area whose owners are unable to do the work. Projects typically last two to three work days. Volunteers can be 14 or older, but those under 18 are required to have a signed parental consent form. Would you be willing to volunteer as part of a Binkley team? Please contact Art Sherwood, Outreach Chair [email protected] to express your willingness to help on such a short term project.

A GLANCE IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR: CHILDREN’S MINISTRY 2012-13

Summer is in full swing, with new rhythms and hopes for re-creation. It’s also a good time to look back and recall the joys of the year. Last July, in Vacation Bible School, we traveled in our minds and hearts to Africa, learning about the animal communities sustained by the Baobab tree, and how Jesus taught us a new vision of human community. In August, some of us traveled quite literally to Blowing Rock—where we prayed with the Psalms, enjoyed the mountain scenery, made new friends, and completed some mean jigsaw puzzles. The highlight of that weekend was a spontaneous children-led worship in the small chapel.

Launch Sunday was a joy, as we gave out seven Good News Bibles to rising second graders! Autumn also brought the second annual All Hallow’s Eve Party, complete with games, costume contest, bobbing for apples, and a “going back in time” to meet some fascinating saints, portrayed by 4th and 5th graders. We only figured out “Beaker’s” identity when he kissed Christine Jernigan! In October, Binkley children also met with Margaret Dellapia and learned about how Meals-on-Wheels works, and decorated cookies for meals going out. December brought the beloved Sunday trio of Christmas Crafts, Chili Supper, and Caroling (thanks, Caryl Fulcher, for your wonderful crafts!). Then, we welcomed back Priscilla Bratcher, one of the writers of the play, to direct another lively Nativity Reenactment.

During the Spring, we had Friday Game Nights, a couple of experiments with Early Worship during the Church School hour (quite a hit!), and a meaningful service project, led by Nancy Cheek. Children created “birthday bags” for children who participate in Operation New Life Children’s Development Center, housed at Binkley. Easter Sunday brought an intergenerational breakfast, a moving Easter worship, and then a rained-out Easter Egg Hunt in the Lounge. Rain was also a feature of our End-of-Year Picnic was, but there was still fun to be had playing games in the trusty Lounge.

Of course, that’s not all: Thanks to Leandra Strope, children have performed two amazing musicals in August

and May. Binkley children have been active in Church School, Worship with Children, serving as acolytes,

reading Scripture in worship, and regularly participating in Early Worship. There’s a lot to celebrate!
