I am proud of our very first Beefmaster Seedstock Directory publication, The Banner. As the President of Beefmaster Breeders United (BBU), I recognize the importance of our young people throughout our country. They are our future producers and our future lead-ers, so it is our desire at BBU to do all we can in making each young person a success. Through this publication you will find education concerning our great breed of cattle along with education concerning the experience of showing cattle. With that you will be able to find breeders that you can go visit and have a fun experience in viewing the cattle. You will quickly find that Beefmaster breeders are some of the greatest people on earth. Then you will learn about our great junior program, Junior Beefmas-ters Breeders Association (JBBA)! This is our shining star at BBU and we are proud of each person that makes up this group. At most major livestock shows in Texas, we are the largest breed and we are growing in other states also. I encourage each of you to learn about Beefmaster cattle and enjoy showing this great breed of cattle. I must share with you why JBBA is so important to me. Many years ago, I was a commercial cowman operating a cow/calf operation along with F1 Tiger Stripes. I was happy and enjoyed my operation. Then my son, Kent comes home one day and tells me he wants to show cattle. I was happy he wanted to and I was ready to go find an Angus, Hereford or Charolais show animal, but he said, “My Ag Teacher said Beefmas-ter was the best.” I knew a little about

them, and even had a Beefmaster bull on my Angus cross cattle. I liked the Beefmaster breed because my Beef-master bull put pounds on the ground, which put dollars in my pocket. My wife, Norma Jean and my children Kent and Crystal climbed in the pickup truck along with me and we went looking. In my son’s eyes, he found the perfect one. It wasn’t a grand champion, but it changed my total cattle operation. Shortly after that, my daughter started showing which only made me look harder at Beefmasters. I was exposed to great cattle and great people and these ingredients are hard to beat. In a matter of two years, my operation became a Beefmaster seedstock operation. There is a lot more to this story, but there is not enough space to write it all. I will just say a huge thank you to JBBA for converting me to the number one Amer-ican cattle breed. Without this involve-ment in JBBA, I would have never had the opportunity to be BBU President. As you can see, I love and believe in our JBBA program. Just remember, it teaches each of you about our cattle, how to be successful cattlemen and cattlewomen, as well as teaches you to understand the importance of perfor-mance data in the Beefmaster cattle. Sit back and enjoy as you browse through this publication. I hope, I can soon wel-come you as a JBBA member or even a BBU member. In the meantime “shoot for the moon and even if you miss, you will land among the stars!” God Bless You.

More Than A Show Heifer

After weeks of searching, you’ve finally found this year’s Beefmaster show heifer. The show season is about to begin and you’re excited to see how your new purchase will perform in the ring. Maybe this will be the heifer that helps you win that coveted purple banner or Grand Champion belt buckle! While you may look at your heifer and only see this year’s project, there’s more value in that female tied in your barn than you think. You may not realize it yet, but there’s an endless list of benefits as-sociated with becoming involved with a livestock project such as showing Beefmaster cattle. You get to become involved in the beef cattle industry while developing skills that will help you succeed in the ring and other endeavors outside the show barn. Beefmaster females are known for their outstanding maternal charac-

teristics, making your show heifer a great candidate to start your own cow herd! Beefmaster cows are protec-tive mothers and strong milkers that will raise healthy, heavy calves. The versatility of the Beefmaster makes it a good breed for starting your cow herd. Raising purebred Beefmaster would give you the opportunity to raise your own future show heifers. bulls on a Beefmaster cow will give you high-performing feeder calves that will top the market. Over time, your herd grows from one heifer into a pasture full of females. Having a small herd of former show heifers out working as cows can generate a nice source of income for you, which will come in handy as you start saving money for college. Speaking of college, there are scholarships available for youth involved in livestock projects. Be-coming active will help bolster your record for local, state, and national scholarships that help offset the rising costs associated with getting a college education. Additionally, involvement in livestock programs opens the door for extracurricular activities at your school of choice. Most schools with an agriculture program have clubs, such as Block & Bridle and Colle-giate Cattlemen, to keep you involved in the industry outside of the show ring. Competitive teams, such as live-stock judging and quiz bowl, give you the chance to keep your competitive juices flowing even if you can’t make it into the show ring. Another benefit of becoming involved in showing cattle has been said many times by many different people. While it may be repetitive, this benefit continues to be brought up because it’s so true! Involvement in livestock projects develops great life skills that come in handy outside of the barn. Taking care of show cattle instills responsibility and work ethic. The time spent halter breaking, feed-ing, washing, brushing, and working

every day is all part of the process that leads up to the exhilarating mo-ment when you lead your heifer into the show ring. Working hard and do-ing your best throughout the process will lead to success, a lesson that can be applied to so many challenges in life. Employers from all lines of work are interested in young people with agriculture backgrounds because they have learned the skills needed to be successful in the workplace. Hard-working, responsible and respectful employees are becoming harder to find, but these individuals are easy to find in the show barn. Outside the ring, other skills can be developed that will give you an advantage going forward. Becoming active in public speaking contests as-sociated with many cattle shows will help to become comfortable speaking to groups for presentations, or when those scholarship interviews come your way. The ability to effectively communicate with others is becoming more valuable as our world becomes more dependent on technology. Hav-ing the confidence to offer someone a smile and a handshake will set you apart from those that haven’t devel-oped their communication skills. Outside the show ring, there are many opportunities to develop leadership skills that will help you immensely as you get older. Starting at the local level, there are commit-tees and officer positions within your local 4-H and FFA chapter to get you started. Helping organize programs on the local level can help you discover the skills that make you an effective

leader. Through those experiences, you may decide to pursue becoming a state FFA officer, or a member of the Junior Beefmaster Breeders Associa-tion Board of Directors. Becoming involved in a leadership role is great for personal development, but the true value of leadership is being able to serve others. Giving of your time to help make an organization better is a worthy endeavor, as it helps everyone involved with the organization and inspires others to do the same! The people involved in the cattle industry are a closely connected bunch. Being an active part of this network of current and future profes-sionals will be worthwhile, especially if you one day hope to work in the industry yourself! The opportunity to meet and interact with breeders, extension agents, FFA advisors and other industry professionals will help you build your network. It’s never too early to start building that network and you can never have too many good contacts. Establishing these relationships can lead to opportunities for scholarships, internships and jobs when you finish school. Combining strong work ethic, communication skills, leadership capabilities and a good network of professional contacts will make you a sought after com-modity when your job search begins. While every benefit mentioned is extremely valuable in its own right, the greatest advantage to becom-ing involved in showing Beefmaster cattle are the countless memories and friendships. There’s nothing like spending the day loading up the stock

trailer, hopping into the pickup with your family, and driving all night to get to that big show 500 miles from home. While that may sound like anything but fun, the memories from these trips are the ones that are never forgotten. Summer trips to national stock shows become the annual fam-ily vacation, where you meet other families from all over the country who are in the same boat. Meeting people at shows that love the same things you do leads to special friend-ships. All the chores that come before the show are worth it in order to get to spend time with those stock show friends you don’t get to see very often. Not too long ago, I was one of the young folks on the “business end” of the halter showing my own cattle. I competed nationally in and out of the ring and served a term on a junior board of directors. I was able to travel around the country, meeting people and making friends in all regions. I heard everyone who talked about the life lessons and benefits of be-ing involved in livestock programs, but I didn’t realize the impact of those lessons until I began working on my master’s degree, as the doors for continuing my education were opened for me due in large part to my involvement showing cattle. I was encouraged by an industry leader to apply for an opening to study under an excellent professor. Without the recommendation of this mentor, I would have never known about the opportunity. When I moved 800 miles from home to start in this position,

the only people I knew in a school of 50,000 students were two guys I had met at a show two years earlier. What could have been an overwhelm-ing experience turned into an almost seamless transition because of my helpful stock show friends. When I finished my degree, my first interview and job offer came my way because of connections I had made in the live-stock industry. Those friends I made are now professional colleagues that I work with every day as a part of this great industry.

When I hung up my show harness and started into the real world is when I realized that showing cattle involves so much more than just a show heifer. The banners and buckles are great reminders of past success, but that’s not the ultimate prize that comes from showing. The skills, lessons, memo-ries and friendships that last a lifetime are more valuable than any trophy you may have stored in your attic. Enjoy the years that you get to compete in the ring, as they’ll come to an end before you know it. §

Howdy, I am Trenton Glaser Presi-dent of the Junior Beefmaster Breed-ers Association (JBBA). I would like to start by telling you about my personal story and involvement in JBBA. I joined JBBA when I was nine years old as my family was looking for a better way to exhibit our Beefmaster cattle. I attended my first Junior Nationals in Tyler, Texas and my family and I quickly fell in love with the organization. We met many people my first year with the JBBA. All of the members happily welcomed us into the organization and made us feel very much at home. My first year in the JBBA I discovered that along with exhibiting cattle there are also a many educational competitions including the speaking contest, herds-man quiz and judging contest. These competitions helped me build up my knowledge of cattle and improved my ability to communicate with others, which is a valuable skill. Over the years, I became more involved in the organization as I attended more shows and met many extraordinary people. During this time I began to notice the members of the Board of Directors. They are the leaders of JBBA and I knew very early on that I wanted to be on the Board of Directors. Once I turned sixteen, I applied to become a director and I was elected to serve. After one year on the board I ran for president, the position I currently

hold. I have truly enjoyed my time spent in JBBA, with the many friends I have made and I hope that you can have a similar experience. Now that you know a little about my JBBA experience, I would like to tell you what JBBA is and what it has to offer to you. JBBA was founded in 1984 under its parent association Beefmaster Breeders United (BBU). JBBA’s membership has been steadily increasing since its founding and we hope it will continue to grow in the future. We strive to promote and im-prove the Beefmaster breed by work-ing together with our fellow Beefmas-ter breeders. Although improvement of the Beefmaster breed is important, a major goal of JBBA is the improve-ment of our members as they enter into the beef industry. JBBA includes many aspects of the beef industry allowing our member to gain ex-perience that will allow them to be better managers and breeders of their Beefmaster cattle. As I mentioned above, there are several competitions that JBBA hosts at Nationals. The speaking contest is probably the most prestigious of all, as winning allows you to speak at both the JBBA and BBU National Conventions. Person-ally this is my favorite competition as it has allowed me to perform better while giving presentations in college. In order to prepare for this contest, you need to do thorough research and

understand the given topic very well. The judges will usually ask ques-tions after you present your speech to see if you truly understand the topic. This competition will greatly expand your ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely, which can be very important especially when you market your animals. Another event is the herdsman quiz. During this contest the exhibitor’s knowledge of beef cattle is tested. All of the infor-mation you need to do well on the herdsman quiz is available for down-load from the BBU website under the “juniors” tab at www.beefmasters.org. The more you know about the cattle industry, the more likely you are to be successful as a Beefmaster breeder and in life in general. Any cattle pro-ducer can benefit from the knowledge gained in this event. The last compe-tition held at Nationals is the judg-ing contest. Everyone is allowed to compete, even adults, which is always a blast. To prepare to judge you can always look up what the ideal cow should look like but the best way to prepare is simply being around cattle. Having experience with animals and what to look for is extremely impor-tant. Also listening to experienced cattlemen and woman and what they say about the Beefmaster breed can be very helpful. This competition helps young breeders understand what to look for in quality cattle and be more knowledgeable in how to describe animals when attempting to market them. All of these events are held to ensure that the younger generation is ready to compete in the beef industry. In order for the Beefmaster breed to

grow and improve, we must educate and develop those individuals who continue to build the foundation of the Beefmaster breed. There are also several leadership opportunities that allow members to become even more involved and shape the future of the organization. The JBBA Board of Directors con-sists of twenty members and an adult committee, which provides input and guides the Board. Some of the duties of the Board are to inspire the young-er generations to strive for leadership, raise money to help support JBBA and to help promote the organization. In order to promote the organiza-tion, you will be expected to appear at various different BBU and JBBA events throughout the year. In order to get a position on the board, a member must first apply by filling out the ap-plication form found on the website mentioned above. When filling out the form, it is best to type your answers to make sure that your answers are legible. The next step in the process is an interview, during which several questions will be asked to determine if you would be a good candidate for the board. There are a several charac-teristics that make you a good candi-date for an office or directorship some of these include: friendly, team player, flexible, youthful, respectful, creative, studious and honest. Lastly, there is popular election in which the mem-bers of the JBBA vote to determine which candidate will receive an office or board position. It is very important to get to know people in the organiza-tion. The three parts of the process all give a certain percentage of points

to an overall score that determines whether or not you receive the office or directorship. Serving on the Board can greatly improve your ability to work in teams and will help gain lead-ership experience for future. JBBA also sponsors several scholarships each year to help fund its member’s future education. Approxi-mately $25,000 is awarded every year at JBBA Nationals. There are several scholarships that high school seniors and college students may apply for and we hope more will be added as JBBA continues to grow. In order to be considered a satisfactory candidate for a JBBA scholarship there are some things you should consider. Grades in either high school or college (mem-bers can receive scholarships until the age of twenty-one) are extremely important as they reflect how you will perform in the future. Participation in extracurricular activities, academic or athletic, and having past leader-ship experience can be beneficial. The above items are important, however for you to be considered a serious candidate you must be a devoted and active member of JBBA. This means that you should attend Nationals and some of the various JBBA shows/events held throughout the year. It is also very helpful if you compete in the speaking contest, herdsman quiz and judging contest as this allows you to be compete in the all-around competition, which is the best overall junior (10 years and under), interme-diate (11-14 years) and senior (15-21 years) member at Nationals. You should also apply for a leadership

position as a member of the Board of Directors and if elected, perform the duties to the best of your abilities. Keep in mind that the more active you are in JBBA the more successful you will be in life. The scholarships JBBA awards are another way JBBA devel-ops its members for the betterment of the Beefmaster industry. I hope that I have provided you with a clear idea of what JBBA strives to do for its members and the many ways you can benefit as a member of JBBA. We would love to see new faces in our organization too, so that together we may continue to improve JBBA and develop the Beefmaster cattle industry. I can personally say I have benefitted from this great orga-nization. I have seen the hard work I put into this organization take shape inside and outside the classroom. The leadership experience I have gained has proven to be very valuable when working with others in the student organization I have joined and I think everyone can benefit just as much as I have from JBBA. Our next JBBA Na-tionals will be held July 20-26, 2015 in College Station, Texas. I would like to formally invite anyone who has not previously attended Nationals to come and experience what it is all about. You will not regret it and it will be an experience of a lifetime. Making a paycheck, putting dinner on the table and keeping the kids hap-py sounds like something that average American parents strive to do each day. But being up at five o’clock in the morning to make sure calves are fed before work and school, replac-ing all six (or more) tires on a trailer before another two hundred mile or more show trip, spending more on show feed for cattle than food that goes on their own dinner table and raising kids with character and a strong work ethic all while having a full time job sounds like something that the average parent of kids who show cattle strive to do each day. Howdy, I am Laramie Naumann from Brenham, Texas and current Ju-nior Beefmaster Breeders Association (JBBA) President-Elect. I became involved in raising and showing Beef-master cattle in March 2006 when I won a calf scramble heifer at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo through the Dairy Judging Contest. At that time I was in the fifth grade. I had

actively shown commercial halter and pen heifers at my county fair for three years but otherwise had no experience showing registered cattle at major livestock shows. But I was on a quest to use my scramble project as an avenue to gain knowledge in showing beef cattle. My family collectively chose Beefmasters as our breed of choice for show cattle. The land that we currently lease and run cows on was a large registered Beefmaster operation in the 1980s. My dad was employed by the ranch at that time until it sold out. To him there was something sentimental about our fam-ily bringing Beefmasters back to the ranch and starting our own registered herd. The Six Essential traits of hardi-ness, weight, fertility, confirmation, milking ability and especially disposi-tion made Beefmasters the most ideal choice for my family’s herd and show cattle. To this day my parents, my younger sister Makaela and I do not regret the decision to raise Beefmaster cattle.

Despite the fact that I was the child who won a calf scramble heifer, my parents felt like it was only fair for Makaela, who at the time was old enough to show, to have a show heifer of her own. If we were go-ing to become a family that showed cattle, it meant that every member of the family would be a part of show-ing cattle. By the end of April 2006, Makaela and I each had a show heifer. Little Texas Pride (or Texas for short) and Savanna were the foundation heifers for our show string and herd of Beefmaster cattle. In July 2006 our family, with Texas and Savanna in tow, made the trip to Waco for the annual JBBA National Convention and Heifer Show. With the help of the Wagner family and many other new-found friends at Nationals that year, my fam-ily started to learn the ropes of show-ing cattle. Makaela and I learned how make beds for the heifers, the importance of walking and washing heifers, when to feed, how early to get up on show day to ensure that we would not be late for our class and how to be a good sport win or lose. In addition we attended showmanship clinics to refine our skills in the ring and participated in every single contest whether we want-

ed to or not. Mom and Dad’s mantra was “if we pay to spend a week at a cattle show, we are going to get the full experience”. Nine years later in 2015, Makaela and I are still raising and showing Beefmaster cattle. In our nine years as members of JBBA we have never missed the annual conven-tion and heifer show and we have always participated in every single contest whether we wanted to or not. Each year the months and even weeks leading up to JBBA Nationals drags on. But when the week to load up the trailer, replace the truck and trailer tires, clip cattle and get everyone ready for the event comes, it seems to pass with the blink of an eye. JBBA Nationals isn’t just any other cattle show for my family, it is our annual family vacation. We save up all year

and pre-pare our best show cattle for this one week, be-cause be-ing a part of JBBA means that we are part of a bigger family. As I have

gotten older I look forward to JBBA Nationals not because of the excite-ment and uncertainty of winning in the ring, but because of the comrad-ery and friendly competition that all JBBA members and their families have. It never fails that every year at Nationals I have the wonderful oppor-

tunity to meet a new JBBA member and their family and share with them the spirit of the JBBA family. My family believes in the impor-tance and impact that JBBA has, not only on its members but on the beef industry as a whole. This belief goes to the extent that when Makaela and I became of age our parents encouraged us to run for director and officer posi-tions on the JBBA Board of Direc-tors. I am currently starting my fourth year on the JBBA board. I have had the opportunity to serve as a district director, secretary and now president elect. Being a part of the JBBA board has opened doors that I never imag-ined. From traveling as far as Branson and Memphis for meetings, creat-

ing game sessions for barn breaks at major shows, networking with fellow breeders, teaching the importance of beef cattle and agriculture to inner city Tennessee students, applying for and receiving scholarships to help further my education and serving my fellow JBBA members. I believe that I have grown as person. Through this experience my family has grown

with me, we share the same struggles, tiring days working from the heat of summer to the cold of winter, balanc-ing our busy schedules to make sure we would not miss our favorite shows and our wins and losses in the show ring. Now that I am in college, I see things in a different perspective. The reasons behind my parents pushing my sister and me to be involved in raising and showing cattle has finally come clear. When it all started in March 2006 my parent’s goal was not for us to raise show heifers to win at every show, their goal was to raise their daughters to be produc-tive and contributing members of society. The responsibility of show-

ing cattle was merely their avenue to accomplish that task. Even though we spend more time at the barn than in the comfort of our own home, our feed bill is con-siderably higher than what mom spends at the grocery store each month and we spend more money than most American families to purchase cattle with differ-ent genetics to add to our

herd, tires for the trailer, fuel, show entries and hotel rooms not a single one of us would trade it for anything in the world. Nothing can compare to the satisfaction we all have at the end of the day knowing that over the years we have grown as a family and we have the ability to raise and show Beefmaster cattle. If that isn’t living, I don’t know what is. §

South Texas Beefmaster Breeders Association (STBBA) is a group of cattlemen and women dedicated to raising purebred Beefmaster seedstock. The majority of our members are from Texas; however, we have breeders from the East Coast to the West Coast.

Beginning in the early 1930’s, Tom Lasater developed the Beefmaster breed based on six essentials: Weight, Conformation, Milk Production, Fertility, Hardiness and Disposition. This foundation herd was established in the harsh environment of South Texas. The Beefmaster breed was recognized by the United States Department of Agricul-ture as a pure breed in 1954 and in 1961, Beefmaster Breed-ers United (BBU) was formed. Many geographic regions in the United States have established satellite organizations and in South Texas: “The Home of the Beefmaster Breed”. STBBA had its beginnings in Alice, Texas.

STBBA is proud of its heritage; however, we strive to stay on the cutting edge of improving our Beefmaster cattle. We welcome new members to join our Beefmaster family and STBBA.

Last week my wife overheard my nine year old daughter Finley sing-ing Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass” through the house. She was singing “all about that base, no trouble.” Most of the young men and woman reading this are giggling be-cause the lyrics are “I’m all about that bass, ‘Bout that bass, no treble.” In complete honesty, I had to Google the song to identify the artist and lyrics. Finley busted me in the process, and said: “dad, what are you doing? That song has bad words in it!” If you were to travel along with me in my vehicle, I’m more of a Country and Christian music kind of guy. When I was asked by Jeralyn Stephens, Beefmaster Breeders United Communication Coordinator, to provide this article she indicated this would be viewed by junior exhibitors primarily showing breeding heifers. Thankfully, the lord blessed me with a title for my article the same exact day. Whether we have any similarity or not in our music of preference, I am confident we have lots in common when it comes to the show heifers we so dearly love. I was raised on a small family farm in Central Illinois. I attended Lake Land Jr. College in Mattoon, IL, and received my Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Ill. While pursuing my

graduate education I coached the University’s Livestock Judging Team (1992-1997). I have judged beef cattle shows at the county, state and na-tional level in 21 states. My wife, Joy, and our four children (Chance, 16; Keegan, 14; Hudson, 12; and Fin-ley, 9) live in Edmond, Okla. I have worked for Purina Animal Nutrition, LLC as Beef Consulting Nutritionist (Range Cattle and Show Feed) for 13 years. Chance serves as the Officer at Large in the Edmond FFA Chap-ter and Hudson is a member of the Edmond Metro North 4-H Club. They show breeding heifers, and exhibited at their Junior National show last summer and will be showing at the 2015 National Western Stock Show, Denver, Colo., and 2015 Southwest-ern Exposition and Livestock Show, Fort Worth, Texas. Just like you, the spring show season will be keeping our family quite busy. Now let’s reflect on the title of my article a moment – All About that Look, No Trouble. First, regardless of the heifer’s age, it IS ALL ABOUT THAT LOOK! Trust me, this is much easier said than done! Consequently, we more than likely will experience some TROUBLE achieving that de-sired look if you feed enough heifers throughout your show career. passed on a philosophy that persists today in the people and programs of Purina Animal Nutrition, LLC. The brand that we use at our Research Farm (4-Square Brand) is a result of a couple of those philosophies. In livestock production, the 4-Square philosophy states that we need Good Breeding, Good Feeding, Good Sani-tation and Proper Management.

Good Breeding. We are experiencing some exciting times in the beef indus-try with the current beef cattle prices – aren’t we? This is also evident if you have to purchase your next junior heifer project. This can certainly be discouraging when you find the next “great one,” but she simply doesn’t fit your family’s budget. My best advice here is to develop a budget and stick to it. There will be more sales and/or more breeders with excellent genet-ics to select from. Don’t settle on a heifer you don’t like! You might be looking at her for the next 7-10 (or more) years. There is no better feel-ing than crawling out of bed every morning with excitement to go feed one (or ones) that you love looking at. If you are a beginner in the Junior Breeding heifer project, work with someone that you respect and trust for advice. We have the best genetics to

select from in the year 2015! Study the heifer’s pedigree, her Expected Progeny Differences and/or other per-tinent production data. Like it or not, consider the differences between a performance animal and the traits that are desired in the show ring. During the selection process ask yourself the following:

1. Is she sound on her feet and legs (structurally sound)?

2. How much bone and foot size does she have?

3. Is she well balanced (attractive profiling)?

4. How much muscle does she have, and is her muscle shape long and smooth?

5. Is she big-bodied, high-volumed and have an easy fleshing appear-ance?

6. Is she smooth shouldered, strong topped and level & square from hooks to pins?

7. Is she attractive through her front one-third (long and clean necked; free of excess dewlap and brisket) and upheaded?

8. Is she a heifer that exemplifies the term “high quality”?

The selection of your project is the foundation of your future success!

Good Feeding. Boys and girls, men and women, this isn’t easy! Most of the heifers I see at shows are either too thin or simply too fat!

This is an extremely fine line. If the heifer is under-conditioned, she is likely to appear lower volume and harder keeping. On the other hand, if the heifer is fed in excess, she will appear “wasty”, unattractive through her neck and brisket, which will impede her ability to walk with freedom and ease. Purina Animal Nutrition, LLC has lots of options, or tools, available to provide quality nutrition for your breeding heifer: When does the feeding program actu-ally start? Some may be thinking dur-ing the creep feeding phase, at wean-ing, or when she arrives at your barn.

Five years ago I would have said possibly. However, I am extremely confident through Purina’s Research, and multiple university research trials, that today a cow’s nutrition prior to and during pregnancy directly impacts the cow’s reproductive efficiency and the performance of the calf. For this reason, it is always beneficial to select

a new project on the farm so you can view her mom.

I would offer the following nutrition tips:

1. Always feed individually.

2. Provide clean water. Would you drink it?

4. Monitor and adjust the feeding rate of the base show feed ration as neces-sary over time.

Lastly, please remember the sole pur-pose of the show heifer is to eventu-ally become a cow – right? She needs to be managed so she is at an optimal body condition score to breed and conceive at the targeted breeding age.

Proper Sanitation. Please work with your local bovine veterinarian for an effective health program. This needs to include vaccination and respective boosters, and internal and external parasite control.

Sound Management. This square would encompass all aspects of animal husbandry. Be completely honest with yourself here. Take a look at your heifer in the stall at the next show. Now, take a walk around and look at some of the other heifers displayed by other exhibitors. What observations have you made? You can tell who does and who doesn’t spend time with their animals. A show heifer requires much more TLC than a ran-

dom replacement heifer.

Some considerations here would include:

1. Keep her clean (rinse, wash, blow as frequently as possible)!

2. Provide clean, dry, comfortable bedding 24-7.

3. Exercise. House in a large trap/pas-ture or walk by halter.

4. Trim hooves and dew claws as needed. Work with someone who is experienced and knowledgeable.

5. Practice showing your heifer (with a show halter), and ask your parents or a sibling to provide feedback on head and leg placement.

In my 30 years of purebred cattle experience as a ranch manager, sale manager and herd consultant I have seen the “do’s and don’ts” of proper preparation and marketing of consign-ment sale cattle. Please allow me to share with you what I believe to be the essential steps for a successful sell. Before selection of your sale cattle, it is imperative that you as a breeder collect all of the informa-tion available for prospective buy-ers within your control. Your cattle, including calves, need to be registered through the breed association. Next you need to collect birth weights, weaning weights, yearling weights EPDs and carcass evaluations. This data will be adjusted and processed through C.U.P. lab, which is sent to your breed association. The more

information you obtain for the buy-ers, the more faith they will have in your product. All of this information should be sent in a timely manner to your sale manager for printing. The manager will most likely have a con-signment form for you to fill out. If allowed, provide descriptive footnotes for the catalog. Don’t be redundant with pedigree, they can see that in the printed gene tree. It is suggested that you list exceptional cow families, longevity, udder quality, structure, muscle, fertility and disposition as some of your descriptions. Make sale selections at least 100 days prior to the sale to allow enough time for proper fitting. I suggest to only select high quality cattle for the sale. I tell clients to select cattle that they would prefer to buy, rather than sell. Remember that a consignment sale is a competition and your cattle

FEATUREwill be judged against the other con-signments in the sale. Next you need to fit the cattle to the sale. What I mean by this is, that certain sales have particular cattle types and quality that sell better at that sale. You want to be one of the best consignments in terms of quality and type at that sale. Don’t take a gnat to a pigeon shoot! After you have made your selec-tions, separate the cattle into like categories. Put open heifers with opens, breds with breds, pairs with pairs and separate bulls. Bigger, bossy cattle will limit the feed intake from smaller cattle. I like to fit my sale cattle in a feed trap. Grass is an option but I have found that cattle won’t eat the amount of grain that I need them to, when on grass. The trap should in-clude proper trough space, fresh, high quality hay and clean water. Upon trap separation I suggest to deworm your cattle, even if you had done it at your normal times of management protocol. I like to keep a powdered fungicide like “Kaptan”, used for plants. Mix with water and spray the cattle weekly. You can do this in the chute with a small spray unit. This will keep your sale cattle from contracting ringworm. Those of you that have fought that battle know that it spreads quickly and is quite unattractive on your cattle. The spray will assure that you stop it before it starts. I also suggest that you weigh your cattle upon onset so you can evaluate proper gain during the feed-ing process. Then weigh your cattle weekly. Cattle will gain approxi-mately one pound of gain per seven pounds of grain.

There are a lot of feeds avail-able. It is imperative that the feed you select is at least 70% TDN (total digestible nutrients). Your feed rep-resentative can tell you the %TDN of your feed. Start by feeding at 1% of the body weight of your sale animal. Then feed the animal twice a day, half of the ration in the morning and the other half in the evening. Increase your feed over the next three weeks until you get to 2.5% of body weight per day. I like to use feed additives such as Tetracycline and Rumensin. The medicated additive will keep your product from sickness and the Rumensin will alleviate stomach is-sues. During your third month of feed-ing decrease the amount of feed slowly. This will allow you to dimin-ish loose stool at the sale. I like to add cottonseed hulls to the feed to replace the amount of decreased grain. Within 30 days of the sale, get your proper veterinary inspection and interstate health certificates. Make sure that all proper testing is done for the sale. There are a lot of ways to groom your cattle for the sale. However when you do it, do it within two to three weeks of the sale. This will al-low for proper fresh re-growth of hair and cover up any mistakes you might make. If you fire brand your cattle, make sure and do it within seven days of the sale to keep it looking fresh. Don’t apply your sale tag until you get ready to leave for the sale. “Pretty is as pretty does”. I like to take my cattle into the sale on the Thursday prior to a Saturday


sale. This will allow your cattle to settle in and eat and drink like you need them to at the sale site. Supplies to take include: health certificates, feed, hay, pen bedding, manure fork, broom, wheel barrow, water and feed tubs and any pen banners for the stall. The banners help you advertise your cattle and program. Sometimes cattle won’t readily drink water at the sale. Since they are used to your water at home, bring ten or more gallons of your ranch water, just in case. Don’t feed too much grain at the sale. If you have done proper feeding the last three months they will be in great shape. You’re not going to put on weight at the sale. Tip: take some alfalfa hay and feed it to the cattle just before the sale to give them a full appearance during the auction. But re-member, any feed or water only stays in the top part of the first stomach for about 30 minutes. Use accordingly. Keep your pen and area clean at all times and make sure your cattle are “dressed for success”. It is important to be available as much as you can to talk to perspective buyers about your sale cattle and program. The buyers

associate the quality of your cattle at the sale with the quality in your herd as a whole. Good consignments cre-ate future success in other sales and private treaty. If you have done everything you can to arrive with a properly selected and properly fit product, remember one thing. As one of my mentors told me many years ago, “unheard, untold, and unsold”. You have got to do your part in marketing your animal! Either take out advertising or at least con-tact prospective buyers prior to the sale and let them know what you’re selling. Be proud and knowledge-able about your product and let it be known ahead of time. Send the buyer of your product a thank you note after the sale. They will remember that you did and look for your cattle at the next sale. Guarantee your product! Don’t worry about sale order or sale pen-ning. You can’t hide a good product from a buyer! If you’ve done all you can in sale preparation, the buyers will find your product at the sale and pay a premium for it. Remember it’s a competition, so “Treat It Like A Business”. §

When Tom Lasater developed the Beefmaster breed, the beef industry of the 1930’s – 1950’s was very differ-ent than today. There were no modern selection tools such as EPDs (Expect-ed Progeny Differences), ultrasound for live animal carcass evaluations or Genomics (DNA) to help identify superior animals. Making genetic progress was difficult, but over time it helped develop the Beefmaster breed. Through following a well thought-out breeding program that utilizes a cross of Hereford, Shorthorn and Bos Indicus genetics, then selecting the most adaptable, performance oriented animals and breeding only the best, the Beefmaster breed was then born in the harsh brush country of South Texas. While there has been much writ-ten about the Lasater Ranch and the development of the Beefmaster breed, a simple, effective philosophy that is rooted in profitable beef production emerged. Known as the Six Essen-tials: Fertility, Disposition, Weight, Conformation, Hardiness and Milk Production are the core traits that the entire Beefmaster breed was selected for and developed upon. Those Six Essentials are what makes the Beef-master breed such a powerful cross-breeding tool for today’s U.S. beef industry.

The genetic combination of rough-ly 25% Hereford, 25% Shorthorn and 50% Bos Indicus (specifically Gir, Guzerat and Nelore) proved to be very prolific. The resulting com-posites were selected using the Six Essentials and over time proved them-selves to be very predictable. The unique genetic makeup of Beefmaster yields 63% Retained Heterosis, a vital statistic for the profitability of com-mercial cattlemen. USDA recognized Beefmaster as a breed in 1954.

Why is crossbreeding important? As of 2015, the U.S. has the small-est beef cow herd we have seen as a nation since the 1950’s. While our cow herd has become smaller, our hu-man population continues to increase at a rapid pace. The demand for pro-tein in higher quality diets across the world has increased the demand for beef. It takes a long time to expand a cow herd. That is why is so important to create as much efficiency as possi-ble in the beef supply chain. Planned crossbreeding with Beefmasters is the fastest way to create efficiency and profit in the cattle business. The U.S. cow herd is dominated by black hided, British breed-influ-enced genetics. These females excel at raising calves that produce high quality carcasses for the consumer and that is very important. Over time,

FEATUREto earn premiums for their calves, many producers have begun straight breeding their commercial cows. True, those black hided British calves earn a premium at the sale barn but at what cost to the producer? Crossbreeding using Beefmasters is a proven method to increase mater-nal efficiency and calf performance, resulting in more cost savings and profit for the beef producer. How do we know that crossbreeding works? There have been countless scientific research projects on the effects of Heterosis (the scientific name for the result of hybrid vigor that occurs with crossbreeding) in livestock produc-tion. Time and again, crossbreeding has proven to be the single most ef-fective way to increase productivity in commercial cow herds. Heterosis or hybrid vigor, is the result of crossbreeding. Heterosis leads to performance advantages in crossbreds over the average of their straight-bred parents. When used properly, as in a well-planned cross-breeding program, heterosis can lead to big improvements in performance and efficiency. That in turn leads to more profit for the beef producer.There are three types of heterosis and how well a breeder harnesses these types will determine how much impact hybrid vigor will have on his calf crop. Individual heterosis, directly af-fects several traits that are economi-cally important. These improvements actually begin before the crossbred calf is born because the fetus is more viable and resilient. After birth crossbred calves are more vigorous

resulting in more live and healthier calves. Growthier, heavier calves at almost every point are a result of crossbreeding. True, crossbred calves can also have heavier birth weights but the improved calf survivability of crossbred calves overshadows those concerns. Who can say no to more live calves born, more calves surviv-ing to weaning and the bonus of those calves weighing more? Maternal heterosis are the ef-fects that come from using crossbred cows. Those effects are very pro-found for maternal traits. It all begins with fertility which lowly heritable. Crossbreeding leads to big improve-ments in lowly heritable traits such as fertility, resulting in more calves born in a shorter time frame. The calves of crossbred mothers are more vigor-ous, grow faster and weigh more. As long as we sell cattle by the pound, these improvements are vital. While this is impressive, the big impact of crossbred cows come from having a longer productive lifetime and pro-ducing more calves. Given the cost of replacement heifers in today’s market, a cow that produces for three more years (at a minimum) is a big advan-tage. Beefmasters excel in maternal traits. Beefmaster sired females add even more punch to your crossbreed-ing program. The chart demonstrating the impact on individual and mater-nal heterosis on production is truly eye-opening. As you can see, cross-breeding pays dividends. Old time cattlemen used to say that “hybrid vigor is the only free lunch in the cow business”.


Keeping a crossbreeding program simple is the key to success. Stress-ing the genetic differences between breeds used in crossbreeding is important. The more unrelated the breeds being used are; the more of an impact heterosis will have. Crossing British breeds such as Angus x Her-eford works very well but there are genetically similar. Crossing British breeds with Continental breeds such as Angus x Charolais yields better performance results because those two breeds are less related than Angus x Hereford. Crossing British breeds with an Amer-ican breed such as Angus x Beefmaster leads to even greater advantages because of the Bos Indicus influence in Beefmas-ter. The roughly 50% Bos Indicus content in Beefmaster is to-tally unrelated to the British genetics in this cross; result-ing in even higher heterosis impacts

for all traits. The icing on the cake for this particular cross is the out-standing maternal heterosis that leads to superior females that are more fertile, wean more and larger calves and live longer more pro-ductive lives.

To maximize heterosis potential and to keep a crossbreeding program simple, many ranchers use a terminal crossbreeding program. A great exam-ple is Angus x Beefmaster to produce a crossbred female that is designed to maximize maternal heterosis. Then those Angus x Beefmaster crossbred females would be mated to Continen-tal bulls such as Charolais to maxi-mize performance potential in their calves. This mating system leverages

the genetic diversity across British, Continental and American breeds re-

FEATUREsulting in higher performance at every level and exploits breed complimen-tarity needed to maximize production and profit. In today’s beef industry that de-mands efficiency, Beefmasters answer the challenge by being exceptional convertors of feed. In multiple all-breed bull development facilities that measure feed efficiency and residual feed intake, Beefmasters consistently rank as the most efficient conver-tors when compared to other breeds in the same facilities. In commercial feedyards, dry matter conversions in the five pound range are typical for Beefmaster sired steers. Ask any cattle feeder and they will tell you the importance of feed conversion and

performance. While maternal heterosis is the main calling card for Beefmasters, it should be noted that carcass merit is not overlooked in this versatile breed. Given the prominence of black hided commercial cows in today’s industry, it is interesting to look at a Beefmas-ter progeny test performed by Texas A&M University from 1998-2001. Commercial Angus cows from the TAMU McGregor Experiment Station were mated to five Beefmaster bulls.

TAMU staff collected the complete performance information from the calves that were all born, grown and finished at the McGregor Station. Additionally TAMU scientists and USDA Graders collected the carcass data, including Warner-Bratzler Shear Force tests after the cattle were har-vested at Sam Kane Beef Processors in Corpus Christi, Texas. The results for the 258 Beefmaster x Angus progeny were impressive. Seventy-two percent of the cattle received a quality grade of Choice or Prime while the average yield grade was 3.28. In today’s sophisticated grid marketing systems, these cattle would have earned solid premiums. Since that project was conducted, Beefmas-ter breeders have worked very hard to add even more carcass merit by utiliz-ing ultrasound carcass data and now genomic tests to improve the quality of their end product. Time and again Beefmasters have proven themselves a great crossbreeding partner with black hided and Continental cattle both in the yard and on the rail. No breed of cattle is perfect. Beefmaster breeders realize that. That is why planned crossbreeding is so important to the future of the beef industry. Beefmasters are the most versatile crossbreeding tool available. Beefmaster’s 63% retained heterosis means superior females, more fertil-ity, heavier weaning calves, more longevity, significantly more lifetime production and the list goes on. Stock Show Univer-sity was started by JohnSullivan nearly threeyears ago. Stock ShowUniversity provides services and educational programs that cater specifically to youth helping themdevelop skills to compete with their show cattle projects. We are a program designed to encourage andreward success with individual achievements and goals. At Stock Show U our motto is “We stay untilthe last question is asked.”

Stock Show University is COMPLIMENTARY. All ages and skill levels are welcome from beginnerto advanced. We host clinics at shows and homes across the United States, including beef expos, majorshows, and junior nationals; all FREE of charge! Clinics range from convenient two-hour clinics tocomprehensive, in-depth two-day clinics called GRAD Programs. The best and most talented ‘profes-sors’ in the business will focus on all areas needed to achieve the Championship look - show dayfitting/clipping, animal selection, showmanship, feeding, daily hair and animal care to name a few.

GRAD Programs are perhaps our strongest commitment to our youth. These are TWO-DAY CLIN-ICS where a successful partnership will be developed between a student and a professor. This programis a great confidence builder and allows the students to gain hands-on experience and actively seek an-swers to any question they may have.

Even though these two-day camps can be large in numbers, a meaningful, one-to-one relationshipwill be built between a student and professor. Participants will be placed in groups of 8 to 12 studentsto one professor and divided by the individuals each level of experience. Here is where the studentswill learn hands-on skills in show day fitting, daily hair care, showmanship and clipping. Stock ShowU professors are the best in the business. The impact from these skilled professors on each student willbe contagious.

Stock Show University is a not-for-profit company that the Sullivan family has committed over$200,000 to yearly; their pledge to supporting the next generation of America’s youth.

LONGEVITY OF PRODUCTION

In raising cattle continuously for over 63 years, over the last 42 of which have involved Beefmasters, I’ve seen a lot of cycles in cattle prices, weather, and preferences in breeds and genetics within breeds. Raising cattle for those lengths of time in very drought prone areas of South Texas forces one to, knowingly or unknowingly, select for what Beefmaster breeders call the “6 Essentials” just to stay in business. While they are all important, without fertility the others do not matter.

In early June of this year we concluded our Spring A.I. breeding at which time our ranches were improving but still impacted by the drought that started in the Fall of 2010. The importance of fertility and why we have continued to involve Classic Cotton and Cornerstone genetics in our cattle were again manifested when two of the cows to come in heat and AI’d in this last round of breeding were a 13-year-old Classic Cotton daughter with her two-month-old 12th natural calf at side and a 15-year-old Cornerstone daughter with her two-month-old 14th natural calf at side. This has not been their first drought.

Neither of these cows have been AI’d more than once each year nor exposed to more than one bull each year. Longevity of production greatly increases the profitability of fertility. Just think how cows producing this many consecutive years, as compared to growing more heifer calves to the point of producing a calf, would improve your bottom line.

Our 972/7 cow pictured above is just one of several Classic Cotton X Miss Dusty donors we are flushing. We have an annual Fall Production Sale at our comfortable Sales Facility on our Wilson County Division eight miles west of Floresville, Texas. Our cattle are sold with numerous objective evaluations including adjusted weaning weights, adjusted yearling weights, sonogram carcass evaluations, pelvic measurements, U classified by a BBU representative and those sold as bred determined with certainty by sonogram to be safe in calf to the AI bull or safe in calf to a certain clean-up bull.
