The Nativity of St. John the Baptist June 24, 2018 THE BANE AND THE BLESSED You don’t know Tom and Mary Pat Roovers. But countless many poor sisters and brothers know them and love them. Tom and Mary Pat bring hope and save lives year in, year out. I have seen it with my own eyes. While I was pastor in Wausau I came to know them. Only the word of others opened my eyes to the work they were doing then and continue to do now. If you ask them about their efforts, they immediately change the conversation to those in need or others who give so generously to serve those in need. After Haiti, Jamaica is the poorest nation in our hemisphere. Tom and Mary Pat saw indescribable need in Jamaica. And their lives were changed by what they saw. With the support and direction of the then bishop of Mandeville diocese, and with a small number of friends who shared their concern, they began their visits to Jamaica several times each year until the present. On a couple occasions I joined them. I was moved to tears by those I saw living in caves. I will never forget the religious women who served the most needy with the most heroic hearts and contagious Gospel joy. Because love has no limits, Mary Pat and Tom now also bring God’s compassion to people in Kenya. While working there recently, Tom was injured, nearly killed, in a road mishap, Tom recovered from his injuries and continues his work in the Kenyan diocese. In 2017 the Roovers and countless many others shipped 206 tons of furniture, building material, medical supplies, playground equipment, etc. If it is needed, it is shipped. In 2017 the total value of the shipments was $1.64 million. Not bad for a couple working from home, loading not just the computer with data but entire buildings with goods to be shared. St. John the Baptist was born to prepare the way of the Lord. Still there are those who like him cry out in the wilderness about God in our midst. And I am grateful, and proud, to know such people in Wausau and Holmen and everywhere I go. The Lord be with you always. Father John Parr

Normally, a small offering or stipend (customarily $10 in the Diocese of La Crosse) is given for a Mass intention. Anyone can request a particular intention for which a Mass can be offered. . If you would like to have a Mass celebrated for someone, we have openings for intentions throughout 2019. Please contact Sandy in the Parish Office.

In the fall, two members of the Parish Pastoral Council will complete their terms. We are very grateful to Francis Brown and Karen Anderson for serving so generously, faithfully, and well. Rather than elections for new members, the Pastoral Council has chosen to rely on the Holy Spirit for the selection of new members. In the Acts of the Apostles we are told that when the position of Judas was to be filled the apostles prayed and drew lots, selecting Matthias (Acts 1). Our council members will be chosen in the same fashion: prayer, trust in the Holy Spirit, and drawing of names. Do you know someone whose gifts of mind and heart would benefit the parish as a member of the Pastoral Council? Parishioners are invited and encouraged to submit names of fellow parishioners who could assist the pastor in providing leadership for the parish. Those names that are suggested will then be contacted by Father Parr. By letter or in person, Father Parr will share with the possible nominee the role and responsibilities of the pastoral council. If willing to serve, each person’s name will be dropped in a hat. After prayer and relying on the Holy Spirit, the two names drawn will become new members. If necessary to represent the fullness of our parish family (age, marital status, etc.), Fr. Parr may select a third member. Pastoral Council members must be registered parishioners who are fully initiated into the church (Baptism, Holy Communion, and Confirmation). Please submit the name(s) of fellow parishioners who you believe would serve the parish well in this important regard. Please provide names no later than July 1st, 2018 (fill out & turn in at parish office). I believe the following person(s) would serve our parish well on the Parish Pastoral Council.
