“Lunch & Learn” with Kathy Weidner Cypress Registered Dietitian Monday, September 22, 2014

11:45 am - 1:00 pm Cypress Main Dinning Room: Garden Room

It is understood that high blood pressure leads to cardiovascular disease.

High blood pressure is associated with stroke, heart failure, kidney disease,

and heart attack. For over a decade the DASH diet has helped millions of

Americans lower their blood pressure. DASH stands for: Dietary

Approaches to Stop Hypertension. The DASH diet’s emphasizes plenty of fruits and

vegetables, and low- fat dairy products. Of course it is low in total fat, saturated fat

and cholesterol. The diet stresses fish, poultry, nuts and whole grains, but allows small

amounts of red meat and sweets. The nutrients thought to be responsible for lowering

the blood pressure are potassium, calcium, and magnesium.

Join us on Monday, September 22nd, as we discuss the DASH plan and… other

diets that are making the news…Paleo anyone??? We will also talk about organic

wines!

“The Hundred Foot Journey” Wednesday, September 3, 2014

Depart at 1:45 pm for Park Terrace Tickets: $7.50

In "The Hundred-Foot Journey," Hassan Kadam is a culinary ingénue

with the gastronomic equivalent of perfect pitch. Displaced from their

native India, the Kadam family settles in the quaint village of Saint-Antonin

-Noble-Val in the south of France. Filled with charm, it is both picturesque

and elegant - the ideal place to settle down and open an Indian restaurant, the Maison

Mumbai. That is, until the chilly chef proprietress of Le Saule Pleureur, a Michelin

starred, classical French restaurant run by Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren), gets wind

of it. Her icy protests against the new Indian restaurant a hundred feet from her own,

escalate to all out war between the two establishments - until Hassan's passion for

French haute cuisine and for Mme. Mallory's enchanting sous chef, Marguerite,

combine with his mysteriously delicious talent to weave magic between their two

cultures and imbue Saint-Antonin with the flavors of life that even Mme. Mallory

cannot ignore. At first Mme. Mallory's culinary rival, she eventually recognizes

Hassan's gift as a chef and takes him under her wing. Rated: PG ~ 2 hours 2 min.
