The

Azusa Street

RevivalWhere did it take us?

William J. Seymour walkedacross the sawdust-

covered dirt floor of the simpleframe building on Azusa Street andstepped up onto the low platformnear the center of the room. Placinghis hands on the plain cotton cloththat gave the packing-crate pulpitits dignity, he looked around at therows of rude benches that served aspews. A deep contentment filled hissoul as with hopeful anticipation hewondered what the evening wouldhold. Soon the place would bepacked with people of every race

and walk of life drinking in the spiritof the revival. Seymour himself wasamazed at the phenomenon.

Night after night, week afterweek, month after month the AzusaStreet Mission had been pulsatingwith the songs, testimonies, and ec-static utterances of what was rapidlybecoming a spiritual movement ofglobal proportions. And it had allstarted here, in these humble quar-ters, through the ministry of thishumble man, a son of former slavesfrom a Louisiana plantation.

Pastor Seymour put his headdown on the makeshift pulpit andbegan to pray fervently for thatevening’s service, that the Holy Spiritwould visit them in a powerful way.He had an earnest and unchangingdesire that the miracle of Pentecostwould come about on the earthagain. He had the sincere expecta-tion that the gift of the Holy Spiritwould enable men and women tolive holy lives and would foster unityin the church, even breaking downracial and economic barriers. By allaccounts from those who knew him,William Seymour welcomed the fullparticipation of all, whether black or

white, male or female, rich or poor, young or old. He was not threatenedby the gifting of others. All were freeto bring a song, a testimony, or amessage, whether intelligible or inan unknown tongue. He would of-ten decline to preach a messagehimself if he thought God hadalready said all He wanted to say. Hewanted God to have His way withHis people.

It wasnot the firsttime in his-tory thatsincere,God-fearingmen havelonged forthe restora-tion of thevibrant life of the first-centurychurch that they read about in theNew Testament, and it would not bethe last. There are many examples ofsuch men and the movements theyinspired, from the Cathars and theWaldensians in the 1100s to theAnabaptists of the 1500s, the PilgrimSeparatists of the early 1600s, theGreat Awakenings of the early 1700sand 1800s, the Welsh Revival at theturn of the 20th century, and the Je-sus Movement of the late 1960s andearly 1970s. As different as they allwere from each other in their formand doctrine, they were all alike inthe single most important aspect:the great disappointment of theirdemise. The Bride was not madeready, and the Son of God did notreturn to this earth to claim her.

Indeed, after three years the

Azusa Street Revival had run itscourse. The unity that William Sey-mour had longed and prayed for re-mained beyond his grasp. FrankBartleman, one of Seymour’s loyalfriends and supporters, commentedsadly of the condition of the Azusaand nearby Pentecostal missionsnear the end of the third year of therevival, “The missions had foughteach other almost to a standstill.

Little loveremained.”Those whoknew himbest saidthat theirbelovedpastor diedof a brokenheart in

1922, the movement he helpedbirth having splintered along racial, doctrinal, and economic lines.

That is not to say that the Pente-costal movement ended with Willi-am Seymour’s death. On thecontrary, it continued to grow tre-mendously and become an ecclesi-astical force to be reckoned with.Today there are more than 12,000Pentecostal/Charismatic denomina-tions boasting almost 600 millionmembers worldwide — almost tenpercent of the world population.

It was said of the handful of dis-ciples in the first century that they“turned the world upside down”(Acts 17:6). At that time they com-prised perhaps three hundredths ofone percent of the world popula-tion. Have you ever wondered whatthe effect ought to be if over half a

billion people were actually filledwith the Holy Spirit? What was thepurpose for which the Holy Spiritwas given anyway, according to theScriptures?

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in Myname, He will teach you all thingsand bring to your remembranceall that I have said to you.” (John14:26)

“Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: itis to your advantage that I goaway, for if I do not go away, theHelper will not come to you. But if Igo, I will send Him to you. Andwhen He comes, He will convictthe world concerning sin andrighteousness and judgment.”(John 16:7-8)

“When the Spirit of truth comes,He will guide you into all the truth, for He will not speak on His ownauthority, but whatever He hearsHe will speak, and He will declareto you the things that are to come.He will glorify Me, for He will takewhat is mine and declare it toyou.” (John 16:13-14)

“The glory which You have givenMe I have given to them, that theymay be one, just as We are one; I inthem and You in Me, that they maybe perfected in unity, so that theworld may know that You sent Me,and loved them, even as You haveloved Me.” (John 17:22-23)

“You will receive power when theHoly Spirit has come upon you,and you will be My witnesses inJerusalem and in all Judea andSamaria, and to the end of theearth.” (Acts 1:8)

If you are a thoughtful person, you have probably wondered why itis that the more people claim tohave received and even been bap-tized with the Holy Spirit, the moredivisions there are in the church. Wehave pondered this question deeply, and we believe we have discovereda secret about the workings of theHoly Spirit — a secret that had beenright there in the pages of our Biblesall along, though it had eluded usfor years. It is a radical, revolutionaryrevelation, and with all our heartswe want to share it with you. Areyou interested? t

Have you ever wondered whythe initial effect of the out-

pouring of the Holy Spirit on the Dayof Pentecost was speaking in othertongues? Could it have been thatGod had something really importantto say to the multi-national crowdwho were gathered for the festival?

It is clear from the account inActs 2:4-11 that the disciples werenot just babbling incoherently, formen from many countries heard“the wonderful works of God” beingexpressed in their own native lan-guages. Indeed, the most wonderfulwork of God had just happened, andonly a handful of uneducated Jewscould tell of it, so the power of theHoly Spirit came upon them to “beHis witnesses in Jerusalem,” just astheir Master had said in His very lastwords to them:

“But you will receive power whenthe Holy Spirit has come upon you,and you will be My witnesses inJerusalem and in all Judea andSamaria, and to the end of theearth.” (Acts 1:8)

It was only fitting that the HolySpirit would empower them thatday to speak in languages they hadnever learned, so that the thousands

of visitors from other countriescould hear and fully comprehendthe Good News. But an even greatermiracle was soon to follow, as seenin their response to the messagethey heard that day. And it wasn’tonly the fact that 3000 men werepierced to the heart and cried out tobe saved… The greatest miracle waswhat happened next:

All those who believed were to-gether and had all things in com-mon; and they began selling theirproperty and possessions andwere sharing them with all, asanyone might have need. Day byday continuing with one mind inthe temple, and breaking breadfrom house to house, they weretaking their meals together withgladness and sincerity of heart, praising God and having favorwith all the people. And the Lordwas adding to their number dayby day those who were beingsaved. (Acts 2:44-47)

Now the full number of those whobelieved were of one heart andsoul, and no one said that any ofthe things that belonged to himwas his own, but they hadeverything in common. And with

The Power

great power the apostles were giv-ing their witness to the resurrec-tion of the Lord Jesus, andabundant grace was upon themall. There was not a needy personamong them, for as many as wereowners of lands or houses soldthem and brought the proceeds ofwhat was sold and laid it at theapostles’ feet, and it was distrib-uted to each asany had need.(Acts 4:32-35)

There is nogreater demonstra-tion of the HolySpirit’s power than apeople actually liv-ing together inunity, willingly shar-ing all they have sothat everyone’s needs are met. It ac-tually says that all who believedwere together, and all were of oneheart and soul, and not one personwas overlooked or neglected. It wasthe beginning of the fulfillment ofGod’s original intention for Hispeople, that “there will be no pooramong you,”1 and that they willhave “one heart and one way.”2 Thatis truly what “abundant grace” pro-duces, and that is the true “witnessto the resurrection” — the evidencethat Jesus actually rose from thedead, ascended into heaven, andsent the Helper to empower His dis-ciples to remember and to do all thatHe commanded them:

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My

name, He will teach you all thingsand bring to your remembranceall that I have said to you.” (John14:26)It was clear that the Helper was

helping those first disciples, not justto speak in other tongues, but tomake disciples out of those whoheard, teaching them to obeyeverything the Master had taught

them,3 beginningwith the total sur-render of their lives.Just as Peter and theother disciples hadgiven up everythingto follow Him inobedience to thegospel,4 so didthose who receivedtheir word. And itwas only those who

obeyed the gospel who received thegift of the Holy Spirit, as Peter ex-plained to the religious leaders inJerusalem who were disturbed bythe miracles that were taking place:

“And we are witnesses to thesethings, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those whoobey Him.” (Acts 5:32)

Obviously, the Holy Spirit hadpoured His love into their hearts,5

for they were now able to love oneanother just as the Master had lovedthem. They had received thegreatest gift so that they could obeythe greatest commandment andthereby fulfill the greatest longingof God’s heart:

1 Deuteronomy 15:4 2 Jeremiah 32:39 3 Matthew 28:19-204 Mark 10:28; Luke 14:26,33; Matthew 13:44-46 5 Romans 5:5

There is no greaterdemonstration of the

Holy Spirit’s powerthan a people actually

living together in unity, willingly sharing all theyhave so that everyone’s

needs are met.

“A new commandment I give toyou, that you love one another:just as I have loved you, you alsoare to love one another. By this allpeople will know that you are Mydisciples, if you have love for oneanother.” (John 13:34-35)

For He has always desired apeople who would truly representHim on the earth, making His namegreat6 by demon-strating His love intheir self-sacrifi-cing care for oneanother, and ex-pressing His one-ness in theirself-denying unity. After all, that iswhat His only be-gotten Son prayedfor on the eve ofHis death:

“The glory which You have givenMe I have given to them, that theymay be one, just as We are one; I inthem and You in Me, that they maybe perfected in unity, so that theworld may know that You sent Me,and loved them, even as You haveloved Me.” (John 17:22-23)

What degree of unity is therebetween the Father and the Son? Dothey have doctrinal differences? Dothey agree to disagree? Is one richand the other poor? Or do theyshare all things in common?7 Don’tthey have one heart and one way?

So if the Spirit of the Father andthe Son is poured out in and upon

those who are saved, what shouldbe the effect? Well, what happenedin the beginning? Was it a mistake? Was it only for back then? Shall weshrug our shoulders and resignourselves to the obvious divisionand economic disparity amongChristians today? “It’s just man’s sin-ful nature; it won’t change until Je-sus comes back.” But what about the

Apostle Paul’sconclusion:

Those who live ac-cording to the sin-ful nature havetheir minds set onwhat that naturedesires; but thosewho live in accord-ance with the Spirithave their mindsset on what theSpirit desires. (Ro-

mans 8:5, NIV)

What then does the Spirit desire? We believe that He desires exactlywhat the Father and the Son desire:a virgin bride,8 without spot orwrinkle, made ready for her Bride-groom.9 We know that the Bride-groom will not come until His bridehas made herself ready.10 That iswhy she needs the Helper, and thegifts and grace He gives, in order topurify herself11 and grow to fullstature, becoming compatible withHim in every way, so that He can re-turn for His bride. In fact, that is whythe gifts of the Holy Spirit are giv-en,12 and the greatest of these is

love.13

Love is not a feeling or a concept.Love is laying down your life for theobject of your love. Love producescommunity because love loves tolove others. Love produces unity be-cause love is not proud. Those wholove one another live together inunity. They are the embodiment oflove. They are the body of the Onewho is love. He laid down His life forthem, so they lay down their lives forone another — every single day.14

And that is exactly how His body, Hisbride, is formed and perfected:

Speaking the truth in love, we areto grow up in all aspects into Himwho is the head, even Christ, fromwhom the whole body, being fittedand held together by what everyjoint supplies, according to the

proper working of each individualpart, causes the growth of thebody for the building up of itself inlove. (Ephesians 4:15-16)

Just as it did on the Day ofPentecost nearly 2000 years ago, thetrue outpouring of the Holy Spiritwill always produce the fruit of love— a people who dwell together inunity, loving one another as theirMaster loved them. What else couldadequately express the heart of theOne whose Spirit fills them? Whoelse could reasonably hope to becalled His bride? For that, indeed, isour hope, and we hope you willcome and see why we have thishope. The Spirit and the Bride say,“Come.”15 t

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteriesand all knowledge, and if I have all faith,

so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be

burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast;

it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way;it is not irritable or resentful; does not rejoice at

wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things,

endures all things.(1 Corinthians 13:1-7 )

As an aspiring, young Bibleschool graduate, I went on

to serve in the New York District ofthe Assemblies of God, one of thedenominations which sparked fromthe Azusa Street Revival 100 yearsago. One of the sixteen fundamentaltruths boldly proclaimed by thePentecostal movement is an experi-ence that we were told is for allbelievers in Christ. With this ex-perience, the Church would be-gin to see the same thing thatthe disciples did on the day ofPentecost, as in stated in Acts2:43, “Everyone was filled withawe, and many wonders andmiraculous signs were done bythe apostles.”

This took place 2000years ago becausethey received whathad been promised bythe Lord Jesus Christin Luke 24:49, “I amgoing to send you what my Fatherhas promised; but stay in the cityuntil you have been clothed withpower from on high.”

For over eight years in full-timeministry, five of which were spentpastoring an Assemblies of Godcongregation, I thought that thispromised gift of “power from onhigh” was specifically for the person-al benefit of every individual believ-

er, helping them to overcome eviland be strengthened in the Spirit. But for years I overlooked what Lukesaid in the next verses of Acts 2,right after he spoke of the initialresult of the apostles receiving thatpower from on high and the fullnessof the Holy Spirit:

All the believers were together andhad everything in common. Sellingtheir possessions and goods, theygave to anyone as he had need.Every day they continued to meettogether in the temple courts. Theybroke bread in their homes and atetogether with glad and sincerehearts, praising God and enjoying

the favor of all thepeople. (Acts 2:44-47)

Now thatmust havetaken powerfrom on high— to be living

together every day, sharing andgladly giving so that every need wasmet, and continually caring for andforgiving each other? Wow! Was thiswhat we were experiencing in ourcongregation, along with all of ourspeaking in tongues? No. But wasn’tit what we should have been experi-encing, if we had truly receivedpower from on high? Absolutely! But instead we lived our daily lives

much the same as the unbelieversdo, working to make our own living(some with their mortgages paid offand others not knowing where therent was coming from each month). This totally goes against what Jesusdirected his disciples:

So do not worry, saying, ‘Whatshall we eat?’ or ‘What shall wedrink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ Forthe pagans run after all thesethings, and your heavenly Fatherknows that youneed them. Butseek first hiskingdom and hisrighteousness, and all thesethings will be giv-en to you as well.(Matthew 6:31-33)

But besides that, please consider amuch more import-ant issue to the LordJesus Christ. Have you received theHoly Spirit with the evidence thatyou are living a life of loving yourbrothers and sisters, by laying downyour life every day, as they began todo on the day of Pentecost?

This is how we know what love is:Jesus Christ laid down his life forus. And we ought to lay down ourlives for our brothers. If anyone hasmaterial possessions and sees hisbrother in need but has no pity onhim, how can the love of God be inhim? (1 John 3:16-17)

I am eternally grateful to havefound true disciples that possessed

this primary evidence of receivingpower from on high as our Lordpromised. Only then can He returnfor the people He gave upeverything for:

…while we wait for the blessedhope — the glorious appearing ofour great God and Savior, JesusChrist, who gave himself for us toredeem us from all wickednessand to purify for himself a peoplethat are his very own, eager to do

what is good. (Titus2:13-14)

The blessedhope of Him split-ting the skies to re-turn can neverhappen apart fromHim having a bride1

who is making her-self ready. She doesthis by giving her-self to the purifyingfire of the commonlife His Holy Spirit

established in Acts 2, where manywere being added to their numberdaily because they were truly beingsaved. This process of being savedcan only take place through livingthe life of love that results from re-ceiving His power from on high.

This common life of love andunity is the evidence that demandsa verdict. Historical facts aloneabout the life of Jesus Christ cannever, in and of themselves, demanda verdict that makes the world ac-countable. But the Holy Spirit longsto be able to convict the worldthrough the veritable evidence of

His people living out the unity forwhich our Master Yahshua2 ferventlyprayed to His Father.3 He promisedthe power of the Holy Spirit to en-able them to obey His command-ments, loving one another as He hadloved them, by laying down theirlives for each other every day.4 Onlythis would provide the authenticityof their discipleship to the world, thereal evidence of receiving the HolySpirit and what He produces.

This same life is now emergingonce again on the earth. After beingdisappointed for years by my exper-iences in the Pentecostal movement,I am so grateful to have personallyencountered the real evidence ofthe same common life that beganon the Day of Pentecost, almost2000 years ago — a daily life oflove and forgiveness among Hisgathered people. We have beentogether now for almost 40years, growing from one littlehousehold of wholehearteddisciples into a tightly knit net-

work of about 50 communities inthe United States, Canada, France,Spain, Germany, England, Australia,Brazil, and Argentina. In every placewe live together, work together, worship together, and share allthings in common just as the earlydisciples were empowered by theHoly Spirit to do on the day ofPentecost as described in Acts 2 & 4.

Come and see for yourself. Ifyou’re truly willing to do His will, youwon’t be disappointed. t

In the days of John theBaptist and the Son of

God, the preserved lan-guage of the devout Jewswas Hebrew. So, when theangel Gabriel brought thegood news to the Hebrew virgin,Miriam (or Mary in English), that shewould give birth to the Savior of theworld, and told her what His namewould be, what language do yousuppose he spoke? Hebrew, ofcourse! And certainly Miriam andYoceph (or Joseph in English) namedthe child just as the angel had com-manded them — Yahshua.

In Matthew 1:21, your Bible prob-ably reads, “…and you shall call Hisname Jesus, for He will save Hispeople from their sins.” But the nameJesus is a modern English adaptationof the Greek name, Iesous, which is it-self a corruption of the originalHebrew name Yahshua. The name Je-sus or Iesous has no meaning of itsown, but the Hebrew name Yahshualiterally means Yahweh’s Salvation,1

which makes sense out of what theangel said in Matthew 1:21, “…youshall call His name Yahshua [Yahweh’sSalvation], for He shall save Hispeople from their sins.”

If you look in an oldKing James Bible, you willfind the name Jesus inthese two passages:

Which also our fathers thatcame after brought in with

Jesus into the possession of theGentiles, whom God drave out be-fore the face of our fathers, untothe days of David… (Acts 7:45,KJV)

For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward havespoken of another day. (Hebrews4:8, KJV)

However, if you look in anymodern translation of the Bible, in-cluding the New King James, youwill find that in place of the nameJesus they use the name Joshua, forin the context it is clear that it isspeaking there of Moses’ successorand not the Son of God. But in theGreek manuscript the name in bothof these verses is Iesous.

You see, Joshua is the popularEnglish transliteration of theHebrew name Yahshua. Joshua ofthe Old Testament had the samename as the One called Jesus in theNew Testament, for Joshua was the

1 Yah is the personal name of God, and shua is from a Hebrew root word that means“to save.” God identified Himself to Moses as YAH (meaning “I AM”) in Exodus 3:14, asin Psalm 68:4 (“whose name is Yah”), and as most familiar in the word Halleluyah(“Praise Yah”). And in John 5:43 and 17:11,Yahshua says that He came in His Father’sname,“the name which You have given Me” (NASB), so it is not surprising that theFather’s name would be incorporated into the Son’s name,Yahshua.

THE NAME ABOVEALL NAMES

prophetic forerunner ofthe Son of God, bring-ing Israel into thePromised Land andleading them to victoryover their enemies. Butsince the translatorsobviously know thisfact, why do they onlytranslate Iesous asJoshua in these twoverses, and as Jesuseverywhere else?

The NIV New Testa-ment even has a foot-note supporting thisfact under Matthew1:21: “Jesus is the Greekform of Joshua.”

But the fact is, thename of God’s Son wasnot even written orpronounced as “Jesus”in English until the1600s, simply becausethere was no “J” soundor letter in English be-fore then.2 The modernletter “J” evolved fromthe letter “I” whichbegan to be writtenwith a “tail” when it appeared as thefirst letter in a word. So in old Eng-lish the name now written as Jesuswas actually written and pro-nounced much like the originalGreek Iesous. Eventually the hard “J”sound crept into the English lan-guage to accompany the differentway of writing the initial “I” in thename.

You may also find it interestingthat in Acts 26:14-15, it says that theapostle Paul heard the name of theSon of God pronounced “in theHebrew tongue” by the Son of GodHimself, so he certainly didn’t hearthe Greek name Iesous or the Eng-lish name Jesus, but rather theHebrew name, the name above allnames,Yahshua.3 t

Have you ever watched a bee-hive? It is fascinating seeing

thousands of little bees working to-gether to produce honey. As youcome near the hive, you can hear anexciting buzz as they go about themany tasks necessary to keep thehive alive. The workers are respons-ible to collect nectar and guard thehive. The young bees keep the hivein good condition, feed the larvae, and support in other householdchores. There is never a dull momentin the busy life of a bee.

This is much like the life that wehave. No matter what we do, we loveto do it together. Daily we gather tothank our Master for His salvation, and to hear Him speak to usthrough one another. This gatheringkeeps alive a genuine love and carefor each other. As we work, we takeadvantage of the daily situations, guarding ourselves from the selfish-ness and pride that would come into separate us and take away ourlove. Our children are a vital part ofour life. We not only educate them, but we work with them to accom-plish the simple tasks necessary to

maintain a family life. Our life is not adull routine of chores, but is full ofthe warmth that comes from thesweet fellowship of friends speakingtheir hearts to one another, celeb-rating the Sabbath every week, andparticipating in weddings and fest-ivals.

But there are a few things thatdiffer in our life from that of a bee-hive. One is that we are not drivenby instinct or controlled bysomething separate from our ownwill. Each of us is here because wechose to leave behind our own sep-arate lives to increase the life of thishive. Our life is not closed in like thehive of a bee, nor do we havestingers to harm uninvited guests. We welcome anyone to experienceour life with us. Please come and seewhat it is like to be part of a beehiveof people expressing the warmthand love of their Creator. t

The word for communityin Hebrew is edah,

which also means beehive. This word conveys the waya hive of bees live and work

together with a commonidentity. Bees have no concern

for themselves, but onlyfor the hive.
