During today’s lecture, trace the region’s storied history, from its habitation by the Ligurians, Celts and Greeks through its conquest by the Romans. Excursion: Walking Tour of Aix-en-Provence Stroll along the Cours Mirabeau, which Peter Mayle declared “the most handsome street in France” in his best-selling book “A Year in Provence.” See the celebrated Fontaine de la Rotonde, which dominates the western entrance to the avenue, and the Fontaine des Quatres Dauphins, the first fountain in Aix to be placed in the middle of a street rather than against a wall. Pass through the Old Town, and admire the wrought-iron work above the entrance to the Town Hall and the mix of architectural styles that create the elaborate Cathédrale St. Saveur. Also during the walk, locate shops, pharmacies and other essential locations. Local Flavor Sample some of the local cuisine during lunch at a restaurant in Aix. Independent Exploration The remainder of the afternoon is free to pursue your own interests. You may wish to browse the shops of the lively Old Town. You will have classroom instruction, but your instructors may also take you around Aix to give you a chance to practice your speaking and listening skills in everyday situations throughout the program.

Water has been integral to Aix’s identity ever since. A modern thermal spa stands upon the Roman ruins, and fountains are everywhere. Discover the many fountains —and their stories — that grace the squares, private mansions, courtyards and streets of Aix-en-Provence, aptly nicknamed the City of a Thousand Fountains.

Day 10 — Sunday The Villages of Les Lubéron Adagio Aix-en-Provence Centre Breakfast Excursion: The Villages of Lubéron The Lubéron Valley is a picturesque mountain region dotted with lush forests and vineyards. Visit the famous antique market in Isle-sur-la-Sorgue before continuing to Roussillon, where the buildings are a harmonious mélange of yellows, oranges, browns, siennas, umbers, pinks and reds. The ground underneath the village contains an ochre deposit, which supplies the pigments for the paints and stains used on the houses. Then, stop in the hilltop village of Gordes. Local Flavor Visit a local winery and enjoy a tasting of a selection of wines. Day 18 — Monday Avignon and Pont du Gard Adagio Aix-en-Provence Centre Breakfast and lunch Excursion: Avignon Journey to Avignon located on the banks of the Rhône River. This enormous three-tiered aqueduct rises as much as 160 feet above the valley and was used through the ninth century. Its first level carried a road and its third, a conduit; all three levels were built without mortar.
