As we enter October and September is nowbehind us, you may find that the “to-do” lists youmake everyday never seem to get completelychecked off. It is time to start setting realisticgoals that will help with your overall health andwellness. Whether these goals are for thefuture, or goals to get you through the week, start thinking of SMART goals.

Specific: It is important to set smaller goals thatwill be easier to achieve rather than heavyweighted goals that are not realistic toaccomplish with the rest of your to-do lists. When do you plan to achieve this? Where doyou plan to achieve this? And what is your goal?

Measurable: You need to know how you willknow when this goal is completed. Whether youknow you are done after you read 10 pagesbefore you can take a 30 minute break, or youplan go to the gym three times a week, it isimportant to keep your self on track and setgoals that can be measured.

Attainable: Once you fall into the habit ofhealthy goal setting you will realize that thesmaller goals you once set are getting donemore efficiently and you will soon be able tohandle taking on the larger goals you’ve beenworking towards. Those “to-dos” on the originallist will seem more attainable now.

Realistic: Stay true to your values on what youbelieve you realistically will be able toaccomplish in a day. It doesn’t make sense tosay you are not going to do anything else untilyou have finished every thing on your list. It isimportant to take breaks and give yourself timeaway from the computer or books, this is whenyou can take time for your self whether it begoing to the gym, hanging out with friends, orjust having some down time before you go backto studying. To be realistic you need to both bewilling and able to accomplish what you have setout for yourself.

Timely: We all know that readings take moretime than we would have ever imagined. Setaside some time for each thing you want toachieve, give yourself more time than you mayeven think it will take, that way you will be sureto stay on track, and it will leave you with moretime to do other things.

We all know there is no better feeling thanadding that final check to your “to-do” list. Byfollowing these simple tips those goals that onceseemed unrealistic are now well under way andyou are accomplishing more than you evenexpected.

As we all know, the October19th federal election is drawingnear, and at times it may seemlike the political parties aremaking a new pledge every day.But healthcare has beenstrangely absent from theagenda, despite the fact that thepolls consistently rankhealthcare as one of the topconcerns of Canadians. With abusy student schedule it can behard to keep on top of thepolitical debate, so here is abrief primer of the party’spositions on key issues inhealthcare. The Liberals, NDPs, andGreens share similar pledges inregards to the direction of

healthcare—developing astrategy for senior care, supportfor implementing the SupremeCourt’s decision that physician-assisted suicide is aconstitutional right, andreopening dialogue between theprovincial and federalsgovernments. However a fewkey issues set them apart. TheGreens are distinguished bytheir calls for a nationalPharmacare Plan, which wouldprovide public insurance forpharmaceuticals for allCanadians. The Liberals’ mostprominent position isestablishing talks betweenprovinces and federalgovernment with the goal ofreaching a long-term agreement

on healthcare funding. The NDPwould reverse the transfer cutsmade by the Harpergovernment, so that instead ofbeing tied to the economy, federal healthcare fundingwould return to a fixed rate of a6% increase per year.

As for the Conservatives? Theirpolitical platform on healthcarehas not been released. Theirparty website contains onlyvague, cursory mentions ofhealth. It seems like it will be up tothe voter to decide whether theConservative Party has been agood steward of healthcareduring the past 10 years.
