Steve Jobs: A

Life Story

The AL October Edition

8

ow’s this for a story, a

man starts a company in

his parents garage. 10

years later it’s worth

billions of dollars. Then

he gets kicked out the company and

starts two more which go on to

become extremely successful, not too

far down the road he brings the

company from the ashes to become

one of the most successful and

valuable in the world. Along the way

he cheats death twice and defies the

downturn. At this point many of you

readers must be thinking that this is

too good to be true, however it is the

story of Steve Jobs.

Steven Paul Jobs “Steve Jobs” was born

February 24 1955. He attended

Cupertino Junior High and Homestead

High School in Cupertino, California. He

graduated in 1972 and attended Reed

College in Portland, Oregon. He

dropped out after one semester as he

thought college was a waste of time

and money especially since he didn’t

know what he was going to do with his

life. He slept on the floor of his friends

dormitories and sold coke bottles for

money. However he still dropped in

on calligraphy classes, a skill which he

later used while designing font faces

for the Mac OS. In 1974, Jobs took a

job as a technician at Atari, Inc, a

manufacturer of video games, with the

primary intent of saving money for a

spiritual retreat to India. He came back

a Buddhist wearing Indian clothes and

a shaved head.

He returned to Atari and helped design

a new circuit board for a new game

with Steve Wozniak and split the

profits 50:50 with him.

In 1976 Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and

Ronald Wayne founded Apple.

However it took some time for Apple

to release the iPods and Mac we know

and love today. In 1983, Jobs

managed to recruit John Sculley away

from Pepsi to serve as Apple's CEO,

asking, "Do you want to sell sugar

water for the rest of your life, or do

you want to come with me and change

the world? This led to the creation of

the apple Lisa and then the Macintosh.

The Macintosh became the first

commercially successful small

computer with a graphical user

interface. However after disappointing

sales in 1984 Jobs was booted out of

his own company. But Steve did not go

down without a fight as an internal

power struggle developed between

Jobs and Sculley. He said that Scully

was “bad for apple” and called a board

meeting to resolve this matter. Apple's

board of directors sided with Sculley

and removed Jobs from the company.

Jobs went on to found NeXT

computers and Pixar which went on to

make hits such as Toy Story, Monsters

inc and A Bug’s Life. Jobs later sold

Pixar to Disney which made him the

largest shareholder of Disney. Jobs

returned to Apple as CEO after Apple

bought NeXT for $429 million. In 1996,

NeXT Software, Inc released

WebObjects, a framework for Web

application development. Many of

NeXT’s products were incorporated

into Apple products, most notably

NeXTSTEP which later evolved into

Mac OSX.

Apple then branched out and

introduced the iPod and iTunes after

successful sales of the iMac. The fist

iPod was launched on October 23 2001

and had a 10Gb capacity and a battery

life of 10 hours.

The product line-up currently consists

of the hard drive based iPod Classic,

the touchscreen iPod

Touch, the candy

coloured iPod Nanos

and the ultra-

compact iPod shuffles.

In October 2003, Jobs was diagnosed

with cancer and in 2004 he announced

that he had pancreatic cancer to his

employees. However fortunately he

had a rare form of the cancer that

could be removed by surgery. During

Jobs's absence, Tim Cook, head of

worldwide sales and operations at

Apple, ran the company.

Four years later Apple rocked the

world by releasing the iPhone which

boasted its own iPod and mobile

browser. This changed the Phone

scene completely as most analysts

predicted the iPhone to be a complete

failure. Apple sold 6.1 million original

iPhone units over five quarters. Apple

Subsequently released the iPhone 3G,

iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and most

recently the iPhone 4S. Recorded sales

have been growing steadily thereafter,

and by the end of fiscal year 2010, a

total of 73.5 million iPhones were sold.

10

On January 14, 2009, in an

internal Apple memo, Jobs

wrote that in the previous

week he had "learned that my

health-related issues are more

complex than I originally

thought", and announced a

six-month leave of absence

until the end of June 2009, to

allow him to better focus on

his health. In April 2009 he

underwent a liver transplant

at the Methodist University

Hospital Transplant Institute

in Memphis, Tennessee.

In January of 2010 Apple

launched the iPad a

revolutionary new tablet

computer that ran a custom

version of iOS. Apple released

the first iPad in April 2010,

and sold 3 million of the

devices in 80 days. During

2010, Apple sold 14.8 million

iPads worldwide representing

75 percent of tablet PC sales

at the end of 2010. Apple then

released the iPad two which

came with a front facing

camera and a thinner form

factor.

On January 17, 2011, a year

and a half after Jobs returned from his

liver transplant, Apple announced that

he had been granted a medical leave

of absence. Jobs announced his leave

in a letter to employees, stating his

decision was made "so he could focus

on his health" Despite the medical

leave Steve still made the Keynotes of

the iPad event and the WWDC in June.

Then on August 24 of 2011 Steve jobs

resigned as CEO of Apple (shown

above) and took up the post as

chairman. A little over a month later,

Jobs died at his California home

around 3 p.m. on October 5, 2011, due

to complications from relapse of

pancreatic cancer.

Tributes flooded in and the Apple

homepage was change to a picture of

Steve Jobs with a lifespan next to it.

Clicking on the picture led to this

quote:

Apple has lost a visionary and creative

genius, and the world has lost an amazing

human being. Those of us who have been

fortunate enough to know and work with

Steve have lost a dear friend and an

inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a

company that only he could have built,

and his spirit will forever be the

foundation of Apple."

A private memorial service for Apple

employees was held on October 19,

2011, on the Apple Campus

in Cupertino. He is buried at Alta Mesa

Memorial Park in Palo Alto.

Steve Jobs was undoubtedly a great

man with a true passion for what he

did. His legacy will live on and so will

his products. Thank you Steve!

iPhone 4S- The

Breakdown

The AL October Edition

13

On October the 4th 2011 Apple

announced the iPhone 4S. Although it

may look almost identical to the

previous version. It’s a whole new

phone inside. It includes the A5

processor which is the same processor

found in the iPad 2. What this mean is

that the new iPhone is blazing fast and

will be able to handle any memory

hungry apps you throw at it. Its

graphics processor provides up to 7

times the graphical performance of the

iPhone 4's A4 chip.

The iPhone 4S's wireless system has

also been tweaked; the handset will

now intelligently switch between

antennas for optimal performance.

This not only improves signal

reliability, it also doubles the

theoretical maximum speed from 7.2

Mbps on the iPhone 4 to 14.4 Mbps on

the iPhone 4S. The new iPhone now

also supports GSM and CDMA

networks making it compatible with

any carrier in the world.

The iPhone 4S has brand new 8

megapixel camera that can shoot up to

3264 x 2448 images. It’ll can capture

73 per cent more light per pixel than

the iPhone 4 due to a new backlit

sensor. A five-element lens leads to

photos that are up to 30 per cent

sharper than those on the iPhone 4..

The camera also works much faster

than on previous models; Apple claims

it takes only 1.1 seconds to take the

first photo, with subsequent shots

having a delay of only half a second.

The improved camera also features

true 1080p HD video recording, video

stabilization, and face detection.

But perhaps the most interesting

feature that is exclusive to the iPhone

4s is Siri, a virtual assistant that’s in

built. Just tap the mic on the keyboard

and start talking to enter text, check

the weather, get directions or perform

web searches.

Overall the iPhone 4S is a great

improvement to its predecessor and is

a great buy. Although its not the full

blown overhaul that we were

expecting (ahem iPhone 5) its

hardware improvements coupled with

iOS5 (which we cover in next month’s

issue) and Siri makes it a must have for

anyone.
