On the 27th October 2012, Black Apple Productions will be having their first event since their holiday. Unlike other Black Apple Events,

this is a mish mash of South Africa’s talent, on the day people who venture through to Rumours Pub (Palm Court) in Weltevreden Park

will get more than their money’s worth. Bands playing on the day will surprise most, from Metal to Acoustic, Rock to Drum and Bass,

there will be some crazy folk up on that stage.

Starting off the evening is NOW REMINISCE, after winning the recent fan vote, this band’s name is starting to become a well-known

one, after them a Black Apple Favourite – JENNA SIGHED representing the women in the scene with her amazing Violin and Vocal skills.

TRANQUIL will then break some necks with their brutal music. After TRANQUIL, fill up your glasses cause what you are about to witness

is something not seen by many people, ADORNED IN ASH will take the stage and they will release Robyn out of her cage, not sure what I

am talking about – then you just have to come and see it for yourself.

Let’s take a break from all this neck breaking, face melting music – ACOUSTIC GROOVE MACHINE will take the stage. If John Lennon and

Lou Reed made sweet love at an Acid Jazz/Lounge party, their love child would be ACOUSTIC GROOVE MACHINE.

BUT WAIT THERE IS MORE, in an attempt to raise the dead, the most loved, crazy group of boys will be handing out some of their best

work, OF ONE DESIGN, boys from the West will show the rest how it’s done in their town … you think that’s it … think again … THE

HAMMER OF REDEMPTION, will be handing out Mosh Pits, Snapped Spines and Broken Necks like a sale in a woman’s underwear de-

partment!

But let us not forget why this gig is happening, YES we want to raise the dead with some Awesome SA Talent, but, we also want to raise funds to help the poor AFDA students complete their films, in return, AFDA will be using their talents and skills and giving something back to the bands for supporting them on this evening. Phfat and Digital Rockit just to name a few.

“And then came the biggest surprise of the evening. On our way out, Janys and I stopped into the Red Heart Live stage to discover for the first time Tricks and Traps. Two blokes. One fiddling with samples on multilayered keys and one live drummer. What were they playing?

Not metalcore. It was hard, fast and dirty D&B with a bit of dubstep dropped in. I had no idea it was even possible for a live drummer to pound like that.” - Caro Rayner

Having only been Black Apple’s photographer for a few months, it has been quite an experience. Different venues, different crowds and many different experiences.

Not every venue or gig being the same, don’t think crowds are either. We’re all living the alternative lifestyle, whether punk, metal or goth, some more alternative than others, yet still we’re all the same…

Apart from the most random friend requests on Facebook, not all my experiences are the same as clicking the “confirm friend” button. Being someone who gladly appreciates my “personal space”, I have survived a Craving Sanity mosh pit, a Hammer of Redemption crowd, Punks skunking at Doors and having a strange lady feel her way up my skirt at Schivas (Yeah she was tripping).

But even after all the blisters, the mosh pits and the girls trying to get a peep of what the guys from Haggis & Bong have under their kilts, I must say there is nothing more satisfying than going through your pictures the following day, with a sore neck and awesome memories, seeing how YOU captured music, personalities and pure pleasure on camera.

Now to get to the whole point of this article. Here are a few tips on live event photography (from personal experience) Make sure you know your camera. The technical

stuff is kind of important if you want quality.

Always make sure your battery is fully charged and that you have the correct lenses etc before you leave for the gig.

If you are not doing it as a favor for a friend, band or venue, and payment is mentioned, make sure there is some form of contract. This protects you and the client.

Depending on the type of bands be prepared for mosh pits, skunking, being bumped and shoved around.

Always make sure to get at least one pic of each individual band member.

Insurance! Insurance! Insurance! Crowds often don’t worry about the photographer up against the stage, and WILL bump your camera out of your hands at some stage.

Be discreet; yet make sure you get your shot. Remember the fans are there to see the band, not someone stalking them with a camera.

Don’t just take pictures of the 1st song, a set is usually longer than 15 minutes It takes a song or two for the crowd and musicians to get “the feel of” and “read” each other. Once that has happened the magic begins.

Never leave your camera with bar staff etc. Buy a backpack and always keep it with you.

Make eye contact with band members on stage, acknowledge them, they often surprise you with a pose or two, that will help you get THE shot.

To help you get started here’s a few bands that I enjoy taking pictures of, and yes they ALWAYS give a good show.

ADORNED IN ASH Stage persona x 10000. This band is amazing to take pics of. Corpse paint, guitar solo’s chains, and Robyn’s growling! CRAVING SANITY These guys know how to get a mosh pit going! LANE EVERMORE Always showing up dressed for the occasion, often also with face paint, like candy skulls and masquerade masks. These guys sure know how to get the attention of a crowd, and they look good on camera! HAGGIS & BONG KILTS!!!!! Nuff said. JET BLACK CAMARO These guys are real rock stars, they know what they’re doing and are always entertaining to the lens. FREE THE ANIMALS Lead singer Dave van Vuuren, is amazing on stage, he sings from his soul. After winning Idols SA last year he decided to not go mainstream, started a rock band, and they are doing oh so well.

MY FAULT.

It’s amazing how something as trivial as rain will make me think twice before getting out of bed to go to varsity. I start wondering whether it’s worth going if I can’t sit outside with my coffee and smoke. I know full well that all that time in between classes should be spent reading, but instead I’ll sit with my books open with my pen in the wrong hand so I can hold a cigarette, waste time and look like I’m studying. I’ve learned how to look busy. I have fully convinced myself that working under pressure produces better results. An assignment left until the night before will be a masterpiece whereas if I spend all term planning and writing the thing, I’ll be 20% under what I would usually get. Marks have proven this one to be true for me, but I think it’s more a case of refusing to be distracted simply because I’m so shit scared that it’ll be late. I’ve learned how to prioritise. When you spend as much time on the internet as I have, you will find yourself wanting to take a shotgun to the head of the asshole in IT who decided that certain websites will be blocked during certain hours of the day. I can understand for Facebook, but for YouTube?! In between watching Katy Perry videos, I find it to be a valuable learning resource. In first year, I received an email from the IT department telling me that I was using too much of the bandwidth and they would cut me off if I didn’t stop. I was watching Zeitgeist on Vimeo. Coincidence?! I think not.

THEIR FAULT.

It is widely known that university bureaucracy is a cess pool of inadequacy and inconsistency. Rules for one department will not be the same as those for another. For example, in the department of International Relations at Wits, an essay 15 minutes late will receive a 5% mark deduction, with 10% further every day after that. The department of Politics is slightly more lenient. I turned up a day late with an essay at the beginning of this year and I must have looked like I was about to shit my pants or something because the lady in the office said it was fine. I’ve learned how to bullshit from the best. I will get increasingly frustrated with lecturers who do not include readings that I pay hundreds of rands for in the reading packs. Instead they give us links to journals in pdf. format for us to download. WHERE’S MY MONEY GOING, ASSHOLES. I’ve learned how to swindle money from starving students. Sometimes I will get a tutor who will know their shit back to front, and probably sleep in a bed made out of textbooks and journals, but sometimes I get a tutor who knows about as much of the subject as I do, trying to pass 45 minutes through ‘facilitating a group discussion.’ This will include said tutor standing at the front of the class asking us vague questions about the readings and then asking others in the class what they think about what the first person said. I’ve learned how to earn money by doing f*ckall.

Started in January 2011 when presented with an opportunity to record a demo Gert Griessel (Bass and vocals) started ATLM with the idea in mind to be the anti-Polisiekar, Heuwels Fantasties sounding Afrikaans band! To be heavier, faster, more aggressive and vocal than the typical South African "Afrikaans rock band". Then joined by hard hitting drummer JJ van Zijl, and latest edition Jayson vK on lead guitar, the band has one statement to make!

Hailing from Krugerdorp/Roodepoort area the band is cultivating an audience with Radio play on various internet and FM radio stations like 93.8mix fm. The band is currently working on its first album they are out to share that view.

From the very first moment South Africa had me in a spell. A surprisingly diverse and breath-taking country with a moving history! Actually the reason for my visit was to meet Anton from Verkrag and Wrath Passion (http://www.verkrag.com/ + http://www.verkrag.com/wrathpassion.html). I felt very honoured to meet this fabulous artist in person. I loved his unique music and his ways of expression from the beginning, and a big friendship has grown within the last 6 years. He welcomed me so warmly with open arms, and let me feel at home. I am thankful that Anton let me explore the culture with an open mind.

Fortunately I've had only positive experiences up to now. People friendly and helpful. But you can also see all the problems that this country is struggling with such as: equal rights, crime and unemployment. It's a diverse country indeed - the ever red earth like on Mars; charming little houses with big coloured gardens and at least two doggies, surrounded by fences; ghetto hoods next to modern magnificent buildings; hawkers and beggars on the streets and highways like in California. I really loved exploring the landscapes and I enjoyed observing all the different kinds of animals – South Africa has so much beauty to offer! Anton took me to a local Metal Festival and I was very impressed. Plenty of the bands demonstrated a lot of talent. I love to watch the more unknown bands because you can feel their energy and their love for the music. Besides they are not as bigheaded and are on familiar terms with their fans. Booze, moshing in front of the stage, bawling screams and flying hair - everything reminds me of concerts I'm used to. You feel like you are in Europe, till you turn around and get aware that there only 2 rows of Metalheadz behind you. There should be more of events to support those talented bands. I'm deeply grateful that I got the chance to immerse myself into the South African culture and to have the chance to make those amazing experiences.

Formerly a founding member and guitarist of local band ALL FORLORN, has been active upon the local music scene for approximately 5-7 years, writing, recording

and performing throughout tours with ALL FORLORN at venues coast to coast across the country.

Having departed from ALL FORLORN in 2011, Craig is now freelance writing, spe-cializing in event reviews and article contribution.

He dreams of one day owning a 100 piece classic guitar collection, a DMC Delorian and if possible, the original master tape recordings, of Metallica's 'Black' album,

and Slayer's 'Reighn In Blood'.

What is the obsession with guitarists? I mean, sure we have

legendary vocalists and front men out there, even quite a few

drummers have left their stain on society but not many (bar

Ozzy ) can lay claim to the kind of waste that the guitarists seem

to leave in their wake. And it’s not always necessarily the

destructive chaos of trashing hotel rooms, or the inane handling

of guns and subsequently shooting oneself in the foot. But more

so the destruction of grounded morals within youths who get

their as yet undirected obsessive attention stolen from them

due to intense bad-ass-ness of being a six string slinger in their

favorite band. All based around a few notes (7 as matter of fact,

without the sharps and flats) a lot of loud noise and bright lights

and a lot of beers for good measure. These 6 string vagabonds of

the night (and sometimes day, when the sun is nice and warm)

can literally have us drooling in anticipation and hero worship

when he raises his finger, pre-guitar solo, just to point out the

fact that yes...He is a god! And this is the finger that you love.

This is all true.

Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, Angus Young , Ace Frehley,

Dimebag Darrell. All musicians and guitarists in particular, who

seemed to lead the path to extreme 'good times' heaven , and

all portray stories of social indulgence that stretches beyond

generations and fill the gaps between them, the normal and the

insane amongst us. While some people grow up idolizing the

ambition of political leaders or the professional-ism of Donald

Trump’s wonderful hotel chain hospitality, others can not

consider anything else more than emulating their favorite

musical heroes through the trashing of a hotel room for no good

reason, or the spontaneous destruction of a guitar for no good

reason, or the consumption of 40 shots of vodka and dying for

no reason...ok wait, that was John Bonham, a drummer in fact,

but you get the point. In fact, the point about guitarists drives

further home on that note due to "Bonzo" (as he was

nicknamed) having none other than Jimmy Page playing guitar

with him in their legendary band LED ZEPPLIN. Another cultural

figure head of the iconic rock ‘n roll lifestyle and cool, calm, sexy

and confident bad-ass-ness (that word again) people see an

image of Jimmy Page, and their heads flood with fantasies of the

open sea breeze blowing over their bare chested torsos with

beautiful women flanked by their sides, rubbing money all over

their leather pants adorned crotches in idolizing hero worship.

Then these same people go back to their hum drum lives, and

crank up the volume!

Life really should be all about 'cranking up the volume' and

without guitarists around there's just not much point. Rarely are

individuals boasting about how great Celine Dion’s projection

sounds and demand they ''turn that shit up’’. Or brag about the

technical nuances of Rihanna’s PITCH CORRECTED VIBRATO. But

the guitarists output, has people BEG for more volume all across

the globe. Maybe even across the universe if the phenomenon

ever gets the chance.

Guitarists create a hold on society, or a small part of at least.

The style, the composure, the never ending sense of 'coolness'

emanating from them 24/7, the RIFFS, the sex appeal. The

dangerous sense of wreckless unpredictability. We want to hang

out with them, we want to be them, or be just like them, but we

aren’t. And as long as they exist, that's okay, because they

exorcise everyone’s destructive urge for raw good times. Just

four correctly placed notes heard in a moment while

experiencing that first kiss, or that first time driving a car, or the

first time you did ANYTHING, can create a more everlasting

experience out of the event for the listener and a stronger bond

to hold onto. Something quite profound when you consider that

it probably all started with that good old musical staple...a guitar

riff.

The soundtrack to our youth, the soundtrack to our teenage

years, the soundtrack to our lives, cannot exist in a fulfilling way

without guitars or the unruly wielders of these amazing

instruments and their musical trademarks. An instrument of

truly humble nature and wild expression, guitar players

encompass a wide range of musical skills, all within one

instrument. Chord formations, scale notes, percussion, melody,

sustain and vibrato. All tools to be mastered by the would be

Guitar God in the quest for hero worship, but technically some

of the finer points of music in general. Which can somewhat

counter play with the destructive side of the guitarist’s nature,

almost like being a refined thug or an aristocratic boxer. A bit of

a “light and dark element” all in one.

A classic example of such bad-ass-ness being Jimi Hendrix,

although disadvantaged early in his life due to race at the time,

Jimi became an extremely studious and knowledgeable musician

due to his extensive study of music theory before drafting to the

army. Although he became famous and legendary for his antics

of burning his guitars onstage in a drug induced frenzy of

performance ideas, waxing poetic on the joys of marijuana

fuelled orgies and champagne toasting sunrises. He was

knowledgeable to the point of tunnel vision about music and

music theory. And not to forget writing riffs that 30 years on

people are still calling on people to ''crank that shit up'' Jimi was

equally quiet ,loud, shy, brash, humble, extravagant and a true

proponent of crazy good times, and eloquent bad-ass-ness.

Never the types to be at a loss for ideas either. They represent

the resourcefulness of man at his best too. The concept of a

challenge, no matter how great or small is never something a

guitarist would consider with defeat in his or her mind. A classic

example of such legendary resourcefulness would be Tony

Lommi, guitarist from Black Sabbath. Whom, after having his

fingertips sliced clean off on his right hand, then went on to

create a musical legacy unrivaled in his genre. Through his

accident he realized without finger tips, he couldn't even play a

guitar, full stop. Not one of the nature to take this as an all-

encompassing end to his opportunities in music, he fashioned

molded finger tips made of rubber to wear on his missing right

hand finger tips so as to help him fret the guitar strings and

actually play note formations, something he could never have

accomplished had he not had the resourcefulness to see straight

through his obstacle into the other side. The other side being

the legendary status he now finds himself with, along with the

adoration of millions of people across the globe.

Guitarists by nature, seldom shy away from the challenge of

learning all it takes to ascend the ranks of godliness. A

respectable quality for sure, and it’s the ''hard party'' loving

spirit inside them combined with this quality that takes them to

the top, and why wouldn’t it? It’s expected that the average

person will likely enjoy the music of a character they LIKE rather

than DISLIKE - Which makes it harder to turn our backs and

ignore the bad-ass-ness of the guitarists out there. They

seemingly represent an expert PHD education in partying, fun

times and drug fuelled quirkiness. Add the phrase ''He sure can

play a guitar'' to that, and you have the ingredients for a

bonafied, legendary Guitar God in the mix. And a hell of a good

time!

So next time you're out at a club, or a gig venue, make you sure

you wander on up to the guitarist in the band and offer him a

beer and a chat. Then hopefully as the sun rises, and you're

passing out next to someone you don’t even know you'll see all

that stereotyping was true.

By Sarah Coughlan It's that time of the year again, where kids and adults alike dress up and go to parties or go trick-or-treating, any excuse for a party right? Many people think the holiday of Halloween started in America as a money making scam, but it actually originates from the Celtic Druids in Ireland and England. The word Halloween is a shortening of All Hallows Evening also known as Hallowe'en or All Hallows' Eve. Modern Halloween traditions include trick-or-treating, bonfires, costume parties and visiting "haunted houses". These are all modified versions of the very first Halloween practices by the Druids. Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain. It was a festival of celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture. Samhain was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and prepare for winter. The ancient Gaels believed that on October 31, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead overlapped and the deceased would come back to life and cause havoc such as sickness or damaged crops. The festival would frequently involve bonfires. It was believed that the fires attracted insects to the area which attracted bats. Masks and costumes were worn in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits or appease them. Trick-or-treating in costumes is a relatively modern tradition. The practice of dressing up in costumes and begging door to door for treats on holidays goes back to the Middle Ages in England, and includes Christmas wassailing. Trick-or-treating resembles the late medieval practice of "souling," when poor people would go door to door on Hallowmas on November 1, receiving food in return for prayers for the dead on All Souls Day , November 2. Halloween has always been a holiday filled with mystery, magic and superstition. Ghosts are of course the first thing you think about when you hear the word Halloween. The Celtic people felt especially close to deceased relatives and friends. For these friendly spirits, they set places at the dinner table, left treats on doorsteps and along the side of the road and lit candles to help loved ones find their way back to the spirit world. In Mexico and South America, this kind of practice still exists as people set up an alter to their deceased relatives with the food and drink those relatives liked, they clean up the gravesites of their loved ones and have a picnic near the graves. A few unexpected superstitions and rituals associated with Halloween focused on the future instead of the past and the living instead of the dead. Many had to do with helping young women identify their future husbands and reassuring them that they would someday, with luck, by next Halloween, be married. In 18th-century Ireland, a matchmaking cook would bury a ring in her mashed potatoes on Halloween night, hoping to bring true love to the diner who found it. In Scotland, fortune-tellers recommended that single young woman name a hazelnut for each of her suitors and then throw the nuts into the fireplace. The nut that burned to ashes rather than popping or exploding, the story went, represented the girl's future husband. Young women tossed apple-peels over their shoulders, hoping that the peels would fall on the floor in the shape of their future husbands' initials or stood in front of mirrors in darkened rooms, holding candles and looking over their shoulders for their husbands' faces. Other rituals were more competitive. At some Halloween parties, the first successful apple-bobber would be the first down the aisle.

So when you are dressing up to go to that Halloween party this year,

think about doing some of the old school traditions as well.

Necramoth was started in early 2011 by Luke Griffiths and Alex Slavchov with one goal in mind: to enforce the values of true

heavy music.

Being a self-taught guitarist, Lukes playing has always been about defining his own unique style and sound. At the same time, Alex was looking for the bass guitar sound that would shake down buildings. When combined, these two

factors formed the basis of what Necramoth was soon to become. Unique and heavy.

The next part of the puzzle was one Mike Drew, the backbone of the band delivering the solid rhythm required for this kind of music. Then came guitarist Aleks Bulovic', who found his way into the band after the loss of former guitarist Matt

Bernhardt.

The Necramoth metal machine was now truly complete.

Having all members striving for the same goal, the music was easily sculpted. With Lukes playing on his 7 string guitar as a

starting point, writing began to achieve something that would stand out. Firstly was Alex's bass. Which brought a powerful low end to the equally dangerous guitar work. From here Mike was able to bring life to the developing songs with

his technical drumming wizardry, the reason for his nickname Mike The Machine. The depth of Lukes 7 string combined with the 6 string harmony of Bulovic' added an extra dimension to the complexity of the bands playing.

The diverse range of styles and influences of each player led to a wide range of songs for any fan of music on the heavier side of the spectrum. From the slower Jack The Ripper to the faster likes of Blood Bound and crowd favourite Lend Me Your

Tears, the abilities of each instrument are fully expressed. Fast lead guitar runs and drum fills are abundant and represent the determination of Necramoth as musicians. From the old school influence of Luke and Aleks to the more modern sounds

of Alex and Mike, aspects of various genres of music are found in their playing

The vocal range of Necramoth is similarly broad. The most glutteral of the vocal assualt is handled by Alex Slavchov. His

thunderous roar increases the intensity of even the most raw sections of music. Just behind this is Luke's aggressive attack, focused on matching and emphasising the bands already heavy sound while setting himself apart from Alex. On the lighter

side is Aleks Bulovic'. His voice is crisp and clean and balances the scale of melody and heaviness. Lyrically, Necramoth aims to deliver a message. Anger and retaliation are dealt with in Rage! while the effects of loss are

explored through Honour The Fallen. Their lyrics are like like the brush to the painter in creating their art.

Necramoth is a band whose only master is music, believing it to be an art rather than a competition. This is a group of

musicians seeking to express themselves through their instruments and their words. They are focused and determined to showcase their unique take on the music that sets their souls on fire.

It all started when two great minds Adriaan Wentzel and Ruan van der Merwe met in high school, they discovered that both of them had a love for guitar, so

naturally they started playing together and created their own unique style.

Wesley Gouws then decided to play the bass guitar to even further improve the sound that they had their eyes set on. Finding a vocalist was a bit tricky, they

tried out a few people but no one fitted.

This is when Cobé van Coller decided to pick up the microphone and started to practice with them, with time he developed and polished his vocals to fit the

band.

Wesley was then replaced with Theon van den Berg. At last after a long search a drummer was found! Enter Andrew Wium. With the whole band completed they could start focusing on writing new material and gigs. Since then two

members where replaced, Ruan was replaced by Arend Erasmus and then later
