The Rock Challenge Southern Open Final

We were delighted to have qualified for the Rock Challenge Southern Open Final with our piece ‘Snow’ and the students worked incredibly hard to get their piece ready for the performance. We had an extremely enjoyable day and for us, Rock Challenge is all about the whole experience, as opposed to the final outcome. ROCK CHALLENGE FINAL : A STUDENT’S VIEW

All students involved in the Rock Challenge team, travelled to Portsmouth Guildhall on Friday 28th April to compete in the Southern Area Open Final, after winning our heat in February. It was a great experience to be able to watch all of the other schools competing to a high standard, and was lovely to observe. This year our piece was based upon the story of the Hunger Games, which included a wide variety of characters, allowing students to express their skills in both dance and drama. We were lucky enough to gain fourth place at the final, receiving awards in the following categories: Positive Inclusion, School Community Support, Best Stage Crew, Visual Enhancement, Performance Skill, Entertainment, Costuming Character, Stage Use, Set design and Function and Lighting. The day was filled with excitement, and was a great opportunity for everyone involved. Darcey Luscombe 11RA

A postscript from Mr Liley As is often the case our students are being extremely modest! Having attended both the area final and the regional final I was blown away by the level of professionalism shown by our cast and crew. They were by no means 'lucky' to place 4th (out of over 100 schools in the region by the way), in fact they were probably 'unlucky' not to be in the top 2. Our collective congratulations go to all of the cast and crew and our grateful thanks go to the staff who supported and encouraged them to reach such fantastic heights. It was certainly one of the highlights of the year for me. Well done one and all.

3D Printer Donation from Parker Kittiwake

The Angmering School was very grateful to Parker Kittiwake in Littlehampton for their recent donation of a 3D printer as they were upgrading to a new printer. Andrew Baldwin, Engineering Manager and Sarah Maynard the HR Manager came to school to hand over the printer and give staff and students a demonstration on its use.

Andrew said "I like to encourage the next generation of engineers in this country and am happy to see it passed on to be used in school."

Jon McNamara, Engineering Teacher said "We are so grateful to accept the 3D printer which will be used in KS3, KS4 and KS5 lessons. Designs we would not normally be able to attempt will now be possible. Thank you to Parker Kittiwake for this generous donation and we look forward to showing them in the future the items they have inspired the students to make."

Regional Table Cricket Match

Team members: Nathan Freeman ©, Josh Jones, Finley Fairs, Jamie Chappell, Kiri Clevett and Noah Damario

On Wednesday 3rd May the Angmering School represented the District in the Regional Table Cricket Finals to compete for a place in the National Finals held at Lord’s Cricket Ground. In the first game against Rachel Madocks School Nathan Freeman, the team’s captain, won the toss and elected to field. Angmering got off to a great start taking a wicket on the first ball of the innings to put the opposition under immediate pressure. In the third over Kiri bowled a wicket maiden over to reduce the opposition to 112-2. This was shortly followed by a maiden over from Noah in the penultimate over. At the end of the first innings Angmering had reduced Rachel Madocks to just 236-3.

In the first over of the our batting innings Fin played some spectacular shots to hit 18 runs off of 6 balls. This was followed by a further 10 runs from Jamie in the second over and 14 runs each from Noah and Josh. The top scorer of the match was Kiri who scored 20 runs to seal the deal for Angmering to go 1-0 up going into the second game against Downsview, finishing the game on 281-1.

The second game of the day saw Noah set the bar high by bowling a maiden over which was spectacularly followed by a wicket maiden over from Nathan who took 4 wickets from 6 balls. Throughout the game our fielders worked tirelessly acting with precision and speed to stop the batting team from scoring runs. This coupled with a further two wickets from Jamie left Downsview on just 206-6.

Going into bat Kiri and Nathan got us off to a steady start, each scoring 12 runs before being caught out. Jamie and Noah continued to wow the crowds with their ever changing ball placement to outwit the opposition to add an additional 30 runs to the scoreboard. The top scorer of the match was Fin with a huge score of 20 runs to win the game comfortably of 277-2. Continued Overleaf

Regional Table Cricket Match Continued

With two wins from two games in hand, spirits were high going into the final

game against Domenica. Having lost the toss and been put into bat

Angmering began well scoring 12 runs off of

the first over. As the innings continued each

player batted tactically to score double

figures which placed pressure on the fielders

and forced them to make costly errors. The

innings saw two top scorers Noah and

Nathan scored 22 runs off 6 balls to score

302-1.

As with the previous fielding innings against Downsview Angmering wasted no time in taking the oppositions wickets with Nathan taking a hatrick of wickets to open the innings. Continuing with his fine form Noah bowled 5 dot balls to reduce the opposition to 6-0 off of his over. From here on in a steady flow of wickets saw Domenica crumble under pressure allowing Angmering a clear lead of 85 runs and winning their final game on 302-1 to secure a place in the National table cricket finals.

Tournament statistics:

Games played = 3 Games won = 3 Runs scored = 861 Wickets taken = 15 Best individual batting performance = Nathan & Noah with 22 runs each Best overall batting performance = Fin and Noah with 50 runs each Best individual bowling performance = Nathan 4-3 and 0-4.

Holocaust Survivor : Dorit Oliver-Wolff (Student’s Report)

Following on from the Holocaust Topic Y9 have been learning about in history, Holocaust survivor, Dorit Oliver-Wolff came into school to give the whole of the year a talk on her experiences. She is an incredible lady who lived through the holocaust at a young age and then went on to become one of Germany’s most loved pop stars!

She has written a book called ‘From Yellow Star to Pop Star’ which highlights some harrowing yet some glamorous memoirs behind the smile of this remarkable woman. All students had a chance to buy the book and have a signed copy from Dorit!

Dorit introduced the talk with some of her earliest childhood memories, such as dancing in front of the king of Yugoslavia at age four! She then went on to tell how the Nazi occupation was a bigger danger for her and her mother and how they dealt with living life constantly on the run, hiding their true identities.

Sadly at age six or seven, Dorit was captured by the SS and taken away from her mother to stay in a sorting house; this was where Jews would stay before they were deported to the concentration camps. She told us of the terrible conditions they had to live in and how there could be over fifty fully grown adults staying with her in a tiny room! One memory she told us of that really stood out to me was how she would play ‘nit races’ with the only other child in her sorting house. They were ridden with lice due to the unimaginably dreadful circumstances they were living in, and they would pick them off themselves and race them across the floor. This just shows that whatever situation you may be in, you can always stay positive and find a way to smile.

The way Dorit spoke to us was amazing. Not one person made a sound during the entire duration of the talk unless it was to ask a question about her astonishing story. By the end of the talk lots of people had further questions to ask about Dorit’s life, and how she overcame such a traumatic childhood to become such an icon of her time!

To me, it is so important for our generation to learn of the horrors that took place at this time so that we can stop them from ever happening again. It was so generous of Dorit to give up her time to come and speak to us at school and I’m sure everyone felt privileged to have had a talk from such a fascinating woman.

Malorie Blackman

On Monday the 8th of May, five girls from Y10 went to

Worthing High School to meet writer, Malorie Blackman. The

hall was packed full of excited students, whispering and

smiling. The talk was fascinating, and we were shown trailers

for many of her 70 published books. Afterwards we could ask

questions and get ours books signed... Which was what we

all had been waiting for! Malorie was lovely to speak to and

we even got a picture. It was a great trip!

Debate News

On Wednesday Durrington High School came here for two debates.

Angmering were on the sides for “banning homework” and “single sex

schools” are worse than co-ed schools. For each debate, two students

read the speeches they wrote and answered questions the other

school asked them on the spot. Then another student summarised on

what the other two had said. We learnt persuasive skills i.e. direct

address and rhetorical questions along with confident speaking, eye

contact and body language. Angmering won the debate for homework

and Durrington won the single sex schools debate. Overall both

schools did really well and well done to everyone who took part.

EPQ Presentations

Eight of our Year 13 students who have recently completed

their submissions for the Extended Project Qualification

(EPQ) met Mr Liley at a lunch on Tuesday to celebrate their

achievements. The EPQ involves undertaking a substantial

project in an area of personal interest, where the outcome can range from

writing a dissertation or report to putting on a performance or organising an

event, and can take almost a year to complete. Apart from undertaking a

considerable amount of research, and writing a 5000 word dissertation,

students prepared presentations to staff and students describing their projects

and the process, or in one case performing a dance showcase. The audience

were able to ask questions about areas as diverse as the disproportionate

effects of climate change on women in Bangladesh, the Canadian economy,

the behaviour patterns of great white sharks, the reliability of historical sources

of Ancient Rome, and the public perception of serial killers.

Speaking knowledgeably and enthusiastically about their projects, and the

process, all the students agreed that they would recommend taking the

qualification to Year 12s. In some cases, they had received a lower offer from a

university because they had taken the EPQ: they had also learned valuable

lessons about research and presentation skills, and time management, as well

as discovering more about their subject area. This had enhanced their

university applications, and better prepared them for further study at a higher

level.

Year 9 End of Year Exams

Don’t forget year 9 students have end of year exams from May 22 to May 26. We do want this to be a positive learning experience and not create excessive stress for our students. As a parent or guardian you can help by talking to your child about these exams and the topics they need to revise – teachers will have told them these. Online resources such as BBC Bitesize and ones that we hold licences for such as SAMLearning and MyMaths are useful to sit down and use with your child. These are not high stakes exams like GCSEs, but are a useful experience for students and for the school to measure their progress. Any queries please don't hesitate to contact the year team leader, subject teacher or myself. SAMLearning Access: www.samlearning.com

Thank You to Our Wonderful Y9 Guides

Our Y9 guides have been excellent over the last year with their enthusiastic and knowledgeable tours of the school for parents and visitors. We have received such good feedback from visitors of their tours and their helpfulness at Open Evenings and events. They are now training and handing over the reins to the Year 8 students so we look forward to working with these students over the next year.

Can you solve this week’s problem?

How did you get on with last week’s problem?

Domino Hexagon

When Dominic arranges his dominoes, for two to be next to each other the

ends that touch must have the same number of pips on them. For example, he

could place:

Suppose Dominic places his dominoes on the right into the hexagon shown

below.

How many of the other five dominoes can be placed in a completed hexagon

next to ?

Continued overleaf

Angle Please In the diagram, what is the value of x?

Solution: For any domino to go next to , it must have a side with either 1

or 5 pips on it, so cannot be next to it.

The only other domino with a 1 is , so this must go next to the 1,

producing . Then, the only other domino with a 2 must go next to this,

producing . This means that cannot be next

to .

Cricket at SCCC

On Wednesday a few of my friends and I went to an amazing day at The County Cricket Club in Sussex to participate in a few cricket related activities. Some of those activities included were table cricket and other cricket activities.

My no.1 favourite activity, was when we got to throw tennis balls at stumps with tennis balls on top of little cones that cover the tops of the stump poles.

My second favourite activity was with 4 yellow plastic cricket stumps and a few blue cones in the shape of a circle.
