Friends of Banning Museum members and donors have a lot to be proud of. Thanks to your support, nearly 400 children had a fun and unique learning experience during this year’s Summer Days at The Banning Museum. This is almost double the participation we’ve had in previous years! This program is for children aged 5-14 from the Wilmington area. It introduces them to the remarkable man who founded their home town and whose vision changed Southern California. Our hope is that the chil- dren who attend will come away feeling proud of their community and believing that they, too, can achieve great things in their own lives — just as Phineas Banning did. Experiences like Summer Days and our other educational programs are more important than ever before. School bud- gets have been slashed. Field trips like you remember from your elementary school days are few and far in between. Our free programs help to bridge this gap, as does partnering with the community on activities like the “Fall into Literacy” Wilmington Children’s Book Festival that was recently held at the Museum (pictured center, below). Did you know that in Wilmington, the number of children living in poverty is upwards of 25%? This is even more reason to provide positive activities that teach and inspire. If visiting the Improbable Gateway exhibition sparks a child’s interest in engineering, or building, or business, that is success. And that’s why your support of Friends of Banning Museum is so important — because it does make a difference. It matters. Dear Friends,

For the past four years, it has been my honor to serve you as President of Friends of Banning Museum. Now it’s time for me to pass the gavel to your new President, Peter D. Kunoth. Peter is a long-time member of the FBM Board of Directors, having served most recently as our Vice President, and as Vice President and Treasurer before that. Peter is absolutely committed to the success and growth of FBM and to our mission to Preserve History, Promote Education, and Inspire Entrepreneurial Spirit. Please join me in congratulating Peter and wishing him a wonderful term as your new President.Since this is my last President’s Message, I thought this would be a great opportunity to remind you of how important your support really is. With your help over the past few years, we have been able to:◆ Inspire over 10,000 schoolchildren each year through our educational programs. ◆ Open Improbable Gateway: The Los Angeles Transportation Legacy. We’re very proud to be

able to share this remarkable story with the community where it all began!◆ Beautify the Howard Rose Garden with the exquisite antique roses section and benches.◆ Partner with the City of Los Angeles, Department of Recreation and Parks to paint

the new Harlyne and Kenneth Norris Visitor Center, put a new roof on the historic Stagecoach Barn, and greatly improve the Museum roads and paths.

◆ Add new cabinetry to our upstairs Textiles area to better protect our collection. This is just a partial list, and I hope it gives you some idea of the impact you have on the community and the future of The Banning Museum by your membership and contributions. Thank you for making my tenure as President such an enjoyable one — and for your continued support of Friends of Banning Museum.

Sincerely,

Edward Carson Beall, President, Friends of Banning Museum

Everything’s coming up roses for the recipient of the 2012 Phineas Banning Entrepreneurial Spirit Award! This year’s deserving winner is Carol Howard Richards, a long-time supporter of Friends of Banning Museum and an FBM Director Emeritus. Carol was instrumental in enabling us to make spectacular improvements to the Howard Rose Garden. In fact, the garden is named in honor of her late father, Paul J. Howard, a celebrated Los Angeles horticulturist and prominent, respected landscape designer. The award is given to an individual who exemplifies the entrepreneurial spirit demonstrated so well by Phineas Banning. The second-annual award was presented at the Phineas Banning Birthday Concert in August. Please join us in congratulating Carol and thanking her for all she does for FBM and The Banning Museum!

Call it kismet, fate or serendipity, but a chance remark between friends led to an extraordinary meeting recently at The Banning Museum. Friends of Banning Museum Board member Angi Ma Wong and her friend and historical researcher Linda Bentz were discussing Wong’s publication of Bentz’s new book about Chinese pioneers in Ventura when Wong happened to mention her involvement with The Banning Museum.“Didn’t the Banning family have a Chinese cook?” Bentz asked. Wong, a history and gardening aficionado, replied yes and his name was Lim Ying. On one of his trips back to China, he brought back the seeds for his employer Phineas Banning and his wife Mary. Both of them had an avid interest in the various plants, trees and flowers that they could cultivate on their property. The seeds flourished to become the 200-foot Chinese wisteria vines presently covering two-thirds of the garden arbor. It was such a great story, Wong said, that she wanted to write a children’s book about it in time for The Banning Museum’s ses-quicentennial in 2014. Bentz then explained that she had researched Lim Ying at both the Banning and the Huntington libraries and would share what she had found. Most importantly, she had been in contact with Lim’s descendants. Within weeks, a meet-ing had been arranged for Bennie Lim, his cousins Steve and Kathy Tom, Bentz and Wong to assemble at the garden to share notes and history. Meanwhile Wong invited Julia Sheldon Banning to join the group as a surprise secret guest.

And so it was that in the early afternoon of May 19, Julia, the great-great-granddaughter of Phineas Banning met Bennie (photo above shown with Angi Ma Wong), the great-great-

grandson of the Banning family’s cook Lim Ying. After making the rounds of the garden, the group retired to benches inside the barn to share family pictures, stories, genealogy chart and records written in Chinese brought by Bennie, census information and other documents, filling gaps in the Banning-Lim family connection.

Julia then led a private tour of the Banning Residence, including the servants’ quarters located on the upper floors (currently the textile storage area) which Phineas had expanded from two to four bedrooms for his household staff, and the uppermost floor housing the cupola from which he could see his domain that extended to the water-front. Next it was back downstairs to tour the newly remodeled visitors’ center, gift shop and finally the newest exhibit, the Improbable Gateway.

Bennie and his cousins left with potted sprouts grown from seeds harvested from Banning wisteria vines in addition to other gifts and printed material about the Museum. In his post-visit thanks, Bennie pointed out the amazing coincidence: his eldest son’s name is Sheldon.
