This year's trip to Lodge Hill was, yet again, an amazing experience for all. The students participated in a wide range of activities and had a great time out in the sunshine learning new skills and working together.

We are very proud of their achievements and representation of the school - Well Done!
Extended Project Qualifications
Eight year 13 students wowed their audience of teachers and friends on Thursday 16th April when they presented their Extended Project Qualifications. Jahmarley Bachelor, Grace Curren, Abbi Foris, Will Oliver, Zandile Powell, Hayden Roache, Katie Savage and Oli Symmonds each spoke for between ten and fifteen minutes about their chosen topics. These covered a diverse range of subjects including Physics, Economics, Politics, Education, History, Geography, Psychology and Fashion. The EPQ is an AS level available to year 13 students, requiring students to independently research and write about a topic chosen by them, with minimal teacher support. The EPQ will be launched to the current year 12 students next week.
A big thank you to all staff and students who attended the sixth form quiz at the Worthing Rugby Club. Great time was had by all and congratulations to the combined PE, Humanities, and DT team who were the overall winners and the Year 13 boys team "We've got the padlock", who were the student winners.

On Monday 20 April Year 7, 8 and 9 competed in the latest round of inter tutor sport. They represented their tutor group in Rounders, Cricket, Table Tennis, Volleyball and Zone Hockey. The weather was on our side and it was a great day, well done to the students. The points earned went towards the Sports Day results, which will give us an overall winning tutor group for Year 7, 8 and 9. Well done to all who took part and the Sixth Form Sports Leaders and Year 9 Sport Leaders who helped with officiating. Full results of the year will be announced in Weekly News after Sports Day.
Gold Stars of the week is a reward system where teachers nominate students for working consistently at Gold standard which is above and beyond expectations. Students then have the opportunity to meet with the Headship team to discuss their achievements and work.
The students are rewarded with 25 credits and a well done letter to take home to share their success with parents/guardians. We feel this is an excellent reward system for the students to share their success with the Headship team.
Congratulations to this week’s Gold Stars of the Week: Charlotte Stacey, Ellen Nicholas, Gemma Milton and Daniel Welton
Well done to Dorit Oliver Wolff for being
presented with an award for "Services to
Education 2015”. Dorit said: “Thank you
very much for all those who voted for me! I
am humbled. My talks in schools and
colleges are a great pleasure. I strongly
believe that learning how to communicate
and build bridges between people of
different creed, colour and religions is our
only hope for a better future. This is my
message.”

SHARING OUR KNOWLEDGE OF DISABILITY SPORT On Wednesday we led an array of disability sports for Sports Leaders from other secondary schools. The aim of this day was to encourage the young sports leaders to introduce these sports at their respective school. The Sports included: Zone Hockey, Boccia/VI Boccia/Pollybat/Table Cricket/Athletics and Table Tennis. We believe the students enjoyed themselves and by the end of the day were confident to introduce these sports to their schools. Clearly the Leadership skills were excellent. Included in the day was a talk from the GB Wheelchair Rugby Captain. We all found his speech extremely inspirational and motivating. He also seemed to enjoy the sports on offer. As Leaders we thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to showcase our skills and hope to do something similar in the near future. The Team: Nathan Freeman, Peter Langton, Louis Saunders and Oli Pink.

desiccate verb
1: to dry up or become dried up
2: to preserve (a food) by drying : dehydrate
3 : to drain of emotional or intellectual vitality
"A desiccated history of ideas"
'Weeks of blazing heat along with a prolonged lack of rain have desiccated many of the plants in our garden. '
Etymology
Raisins are desiccated grapes; they're also dehydrated grapes. And yet, a close look at the
etymologiesof desiccate and dehydrate raises a tangly question. In Latin siccus means "dry," whereas the Greek
stem hydr-means "water." So how could it be that desiccate and dehydrate are synonyms? The answer is in the
multiple identities of the prefix de-. It may look like the same prefix, but the de- in desiccate means "completely,
thoroughly," as in despoil ("to spoil utterly") or denude ("to strip completely bare"). The de- in dehydrate, on the
other hand, means "remove," the same as it does in defoliate ("to strip of leaves") or in deice ("to rid of ice").
Foreign translations:
French: dessécher
German: trocknen
Spanish: desecar
Finnish: kuivata
Last weeks solution:
Let the numbers in the boxes be as shown in the diagram. We can read off that
c=12+a,d=b+78and90=a+b.
It follows that x=e+f=(c+90)+(90+d)
=12+a+180+b+78=270+a+b=360.
Can you solve this week’s problem ?
The square ABCD has an area of 196. It contains two overlapping squares; the larger of these
squares has an area 4 times that of the smaller and the area of their overlap is 1.
What is the total area of the shaded regions?
Y11 SCIENCE REVISION
Did you know that Ofsted have a website, “Parent View” which gives parents the chance to tell them what you think about your child’s school. It will ask you for your opinion on 12 aspects of your child’s school, from the quality of teaching, to dealing with bullying and poor behaviour. Ofsted will use the information you provide when making decisions about which schools to inspect, and when. We would really appreciate you taking the time to look at this website and complete the survey. http://parentview.ofsted.gov.uk/
