The Ambassador Award Recipient Beneficial Bank Accepting on behalf of Beneficial Bank: Gerard P. Cuddy, President and CEO

The Ambassador Award, named in honor of the Ambassador of Ireland to the United States, is presented annually to honor a company that has furthered the goals of the Irish American Business Chamber by developing business between Ireland and the United States. Anne Anderson is the current Ambassador of Ireland to the United States.

Founded in 1853, Beneficial Bank is the oldest and largest bank headquartered in Philadelphia. The Beneficial Saving Fund Society’s original purpose was to give Philadelphia’s growing Irish immigrant work force a safe place to keep their savings. The bank continues this mission today, focusing on doing what’s right for our customers.

With more than 60 offices in the greater Philadelphia and South Jersey regions and approximately $5.5 billion in assets, Beneficial is a full service financial institution whose product offering includes commercial, consumer and real estate lending, equipment finance, insurance and wealth management services.

Gerard Cuddy joined Beneficial Bank in 2006 and was named President and CEO in January 2007. During his tenure, Gerard has led dynamic growth and transformed the bank’s corporate culture. Gerard and his team led Beneficial in its two step stock offering, converting from a mutual holding company to a fully public bank. He and his team also have completed four major acquisitions (Farmers & Mechanics Bank, CLA Insurance Company, SEF Financial, and Conestoga Bancorp). Under his leadership, the bank has focused on its mission as an education company, providing the bank’s customers with the tools and knowledge to help them do the right thing financially. Gerard is a 35-year veteran of the financial services industry, and has held a range of senior management roles over the course of his career.

Previous recipients of the Ambassador Award include: Almac Group, QVC, SAP, The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Shire Pharmaceuticals, ARAMARK, The Vanguard Group, ICON Plc, Amicus Therapeutics, Cross Atlantic Capital Partners, GMAC, ICT Group, Wyeth, and Siemens.

Eileen C. McDonnell is chairman and chief executive officer of the Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company. Before joining Penn Mutual, she was president of New England Financial, a wholly owned subsidiary of MetLife, and senior vice president of the Guardian Life Insurance Company. The Uachtarán Award Recipient Sean Rooney, The Kelly Rooney Foundation

The Uachtarán Award is named in honor of the President of Ireland, or Uachtarán na hEireann, in Irish. In the 1990s, Mary Robinson, the seventh President of Ireland, transformed the role of the President by developing a new sense of Ireland’s economic, political, and cultural links with other countries and cultures, especially those of the Irish Diaspora. Michael Higgins, the ninth and current President of Ireland and the former Minister for arts, culture, and the Gaeltacht in the 1990s, has excelled in this cultural and economic “building bridges” role.

His 20 years of experience at Aramark, where he moved up through multiple positions to become President of Stadiums & Arenas, gave Sean the knowledge and fundamentals to start his own consulting business specializing in the Sports and Entertainment industries. Sean remains involved with the Pittsburgh Steelers, which was founded by his grandfather in 1933 and remains in the family today, by overseeing all Food & Beverage for Heinz Field.

Sean is devoted to community and charity work. Sean started the Kelly Rooney Foundation, named after his late-wife who passed away in 2006 from breast cancer. Through partnerships with Breastcancer.org and The Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania, The Kelly Rooney Foundation seeks to be a catalyst for helping create a generation of women who are breast cancer-free. The Kelly Rooney Foundation marked its 10th year anniversary this summer and celebrates hitting in excess of $1 million in its fundraising efforts, granting $250,000 to Breastcancer.org for education and awareness programs to help young women make healthy lifestyle choices to reduce their risk of getting breast cancer. And $800,000 was bestowed upon Penn Medicine for genetic research. Among the many accolades that Sean has received through the years, most recently he is the recipient of the 2014 Honoree, Prep Golf Classic, St. Joseph Prep, 19 May, 2014, and 2012 Honoree Award, The American Ireland Fund, 11th Annual Philadelphia Golf Classic, 10 September, 2012. Further, Sean received the Improving Quality of Life After Breast Cancer Award, 20th Focus on Life After Breast Cancer Conference, Abramson Cancer Center, Penn Medicine Women Cancer Conference, 28 October, 2011.

Sean’s Great Grandfather, Dan Rooney, was a saloon owner from Newry, Ireland and brought 9 children over to the United States and made Pittsburgh, PA their home. Sean’s grandfather, Arthur Rooney, was one of those 9 children, and was the founder of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1933. Sean’s Uncle, Daniel Rooney, was the 30th United States Ambassador to Ireland, from July 2009 through December 2012. Sean is the proud father of five children, ages 25 through 17.

Previous Uachtarán Award recipients include: Monsignor Michael J. Doyle, CBS3 and the CW Philly, Ann Claffey Baiada, Sister Marguerite O’Beirne, OSF, Timothy Chambers, James and Sarah Hasson, and Norbert J. McGettigan, Sr.

Ambassador of Ireland to the United States Her Excellency Anne Anderson

Ambassador Anne Anderson became Ireland’s first woman Ambassador to the United States in August 2013. Prior to her Washington appointment, she was Ireland’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York. Her previous postings, among others, include: Permanent Representative of Ireland to the United Nations, New York; Ambassador to France (concurrently non-resident Ambassador to Monaco); and Permanent Representative of Ireland to the European Union, Brussels.

During her Washington assignment, Ambassador Anderson has focused and will continue to focus on further strengthening Ireland-U.S. economic, trade, and investment links; highlighting Ireland’s

interests in relation to reform of U.S. immigration legislation; supporting U.S. interest and engagement on key issues still to be fully addressed in Northern Ireland; and further deepening the vibrant cultural connections between Ireland and the U.S.

Ambassador Anderson has undertaken a wide range of responsibilities in her assignments to date. Highlights of her multilateral work have included chairing the UN Commission on Human Rights (1999) and heading the Irish team in Brussels during Ireland’s EU Presidency in 2004; she was awarded European Voice “Diplomat of the Year” in recognition of her Presidency role. During her New York assignment, she oversaw a review of the UN Peace-Building Machinery and was tasked by the President of the General Assembly with facilitating preparations for UN Special Event on the Millennium Development Goals.

Ambassador Anderson’s particular focus at the UN was on development/human rights/gender equality issues. From her assignment in Brussels, she retains a keen interest in EU Affairs. A strong believer in public diplomacy, Ambassador Anderson has been active – particularly throughout her assignment in New York – as a lecturer, moderator, and panelist in academic and think tank settings including Fordham, Columbia, International Peace Institute, UN Association of New York, and Academic Council of the United Nations.

Ambassador Anderson was born in Ireland (Clonmel, Co. Tipperary). She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Politics from University College, Dublin and entered the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1972. She was awarded a Doctor of Laws (Honorary) by the National University of Ireland in December 2011.
