The Airport

The Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU)is governed by the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority(Airport Authority), a governmental body responsiblefor the development, operation and maintenance ofthe airport. The General Assembly of North Carolinachartered the Raleigh-Durham AeronauticalAuthority in 1939, which would be changed in 1945to the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority. The citiesof Durham and Raleigh and the counties of Durhamand Wake appoint two members each to the AirportAuthority Board of Directors.

RDU is a very busy commercial service airportserved by 10 airlines and their regional partnersoffering service from RDU to more than 62destinations.

The airlines include Air Canada, Alaska Airlines,Allegiant, American, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue,Southwest, Spirit and United. Major cargo carriers atRDU include Federal Express, UPS, and DHL.

For calendar year 2018, the airport welcomed 12.8million passengers (a new annual record) andprocessed over 208.6 million tons of air cargo in2017. It is one of two primary airports located in theState of North Carolina and is recognized by theFAA as a medium hub airport.

RDU is home to two primary passenger terminals -Terminals 1 and 2. Terminal 2 is a 900,000 squarefoot, state-of-the-art, common-use passengerterminal occupied by 9 commercial airlines. Theterminals are also home to over 40 retail shops andrestaurants. The Airport Authority offers more than11,000 parking spaces within walking distance ofthe Terminals and has two remote parking lots. TheAuthority recently invested more than $5 million in anew revenue control system, to improve customerexperience.

General Aviation facilities at RDU include the22,000-square foot General Aviation (GA) Terminal,which is owned by the Airport Authority and leasedfor management by TAC Air. The facility houses twoFixed-Base Operators: Signature Aviation and TACAir. The current complex offers 30 acres of aircraftparking space for a variety of aircraft sizes andmuch more. The Authority also has plans to developa new 48-acre corporate general aviation andhangar campus.

The airport serves a large economic area and isestimated to have over a $12.5 billion economicimpact on the 12-county Research Triangle Region.The airport’s total impact on regional employmentinvolves more than 86,000 jobs and helps generatemore than $450 million in taxes.

Anchored by leading technology firms, government,world-class universities and medical centers, thearea’s economy has performed exceptionally well.Significant increases in population, employment,earnings, personal income and retail sales areprojected over the next 15 years.

There is an abundance of places to go and things tosee in these cities and their surroundingcommunities...from their many museums andgalleries to “high-octane” sports events andamazing outdoor recreation. Raleigh – the second largest city in North Carolina,leads the state in population growth with anestimated 2017 population of 464,758.

Raleigh is home to several professionalarts organizations, including the North

Carolina Symphony, the Opera Company ofNorth Carolina, Burning Coal Theatre Company, theNorth Carolina Theatre, Broadway Series South andthe Carolina Ballet. The numerous local colleges anduniversities significantly add to the performing artsoptions.

Raleigh is also home to the NHL team CarolinaHurricanes. Their venue is the PNC Arena, whichalso serves as NC State’s home basketball venue.The Arena also attracts big name concerts andevents. The area boasts great schools and is rich inyouth recreation and sports.

Durham – Known for its edgy authentic vibe,Durham was named “North Carolina’s Hippest City”

according to Vogue Magazine. It is home to a richand diverse population and thriving cultural

and entrepreneurial scene. The latestfigures show Durham with a populationof over 268,016 making it the fourth

largest city in North Carolina, welcomingmillions of visitors each year. Durham is

the proud home of the Research Triangle Park,Duke and North Carolina Central universities. It isconsistently ranked among the best places in thenation to live and work. It boasts highly ratedmuseums, restaurants, ballparks, historic sites,healthcare facilities, sports events, and universities.

A center of Durham’s culture is the DurhamPerforming Arts Center, which shows liveperformances and is ranked in the top 12 in theworld by PollStar.com. Durham is also home to theDurham Bulls, a premier Triple-A minor leaguebaseball team located in the heart of the AmericanTobacco Campus.

Blue Devils in Durham are all members ofthe ACC. Rivalries among these schools are verystrong, fueled by proximity to each other, withannual competitions in every sport. Each of the Triangle-baseduniversities listed have won at least two NCAABasketball National Championships.

The Position

The Director of Air Service Developmentfunctions as a key member of the Communications,Government and Community Affairs Division and willbe charged with developing and executing strategicobjectives, key initiatives, and tactical plans toretain, improve, and expand air service andincrease airport use.

Position Qualifications

Seven years of work experience in aviation ispreferred with at least three years of experiencedirectly related to aviation industry planning, marketresearch and analysis, airline sales, marketing andnetwork planning/scheduling, or a combination ofthe above, and five years of air service experiencemanaging multiple projects.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree(master’s preferred) in marketing, businessadministration, international commerce, aviationmanagement or a related field.

Salary & Compensation

The hiring range for this position is $102,132 - $141,715 DOE, and the Airport Authorityoffers an attractive range of benefits.
