The s tamped body mark ings o fw o m e n r e p r e s e n t e d t h e i r k n o w l e d g e o freprodu ct ion , and were ca lled the des igns o fmenstruation ; while the markings of men spoke oftheir product ive knowledge of hunt ing, f ish ing,chan t ing , cu r ing and p ro te c t i ng . Men ' s f acedesigns we re also called the paths of beads orthe path of the word s of the c hant, indicating thespecific knowledge of chanting; the design was thepath, or the order, of the wo rds and chants. Someof these designs were seen by Piaroa men whenunder hallucinogenic trance, particularly during anincrease ritual. They were also the designs of theirtwil led basketry. The beautiful baskets made byPiaroa men which carr ied these designs of thepath of wo rds were us ed by them for the storageof i tems of r i tual value, such as their drug kits,drugs and combs.
