President’s Message
Springisjustaroundthebend,andwearerapidlymovingthroughthefirstquarterwithournewgoalsandresolutionsfortheAssociation’sfuture.
Aswasposedtoactivemembersforvoting,ourMembershipdueswillbeincreasedeffectiveApril2,2015.Wealsoplantoincreaseouractivi-tiesbyarrangingmoresocialeventsinourlocalarea(i.e.,lunchmeet-upsatamilitaryinstallation,happyhourevents,andbowlingparties).Additionally,wewanttobecomemoreinvolvedincommunityevents,includingtheWreathLayingCeremonyatArlingtonNationalCem-etery(seePage9),andvisitingtheSoldiers’Home,FisherHouse,andWoundedWarriors.LastyeartheAssociationdonatedacombinedtotalof$1,500totheFisherHouseandWoundedWarriorprograms.Memberdueshelpsupporttheseactivitiesanddonations.
Wearealsogearinguptosupportothereventsthisyear(seeSavetheDatenotestotheright).Inadditiontoourownactivities,wecon-tinuetoactivelyworkwiththeWhiteHouseCommunicationsAgencytopromotetheirs.WHCAishostingaBirthdayBallonApril18,2015.Thisisanexcitingtimeforall1600CommunicationsAssociationmembers,currentandformerWHCAmembers,andotherstocometogetherforagreatcelebration!(Seedetails,Page7.)
TheAssociationwillhostour22ndAnnualGolfTournamentonJune19,2015atJointBaseAndrews.Becauseofitscontinuedpopularity,wehaveagaincoordinatedtousedualcoursesforthetournament.Asyoumayknow,thetournament’snetproceedssupportourScholarshipProgram.Seriousandweekendgolfersshouldplantoattend!SpecialthankstotheBoardforcollectivelychairingthisyear’stournament.Theflyerisincludedwiththisnewsletter(Page8)–registerearly!

2015 1600 Communications Association
Annual Golf Outing Proceeds benefit the Association Scholarship Fund and Wounded Troops Charities
Come join us for our 22
nd annual golf outing on two of the courses at Joint Base Andrews (Andrews Air Force
Base) on Friday, June 19, 2015. Shotgun start at 1400, registration begins at 1200 and closes at 1330.
Format is four player teams, Captain’s choice, best ball. Full tournament rules will be provided at the course, or
by contacting the Golf Committee.
This is a full handicap tournament: entrants without handicaps must attest to their average scores over their last
several rounds. The Golf Committee will assign handicaps to those without one, and will provide pairings for
entrants who do not have a foursome.
Prizes will be awarded for Team Low Gross, Team Low Net, and many individual prizes, including Longest
Drive, Straightest Drive, and Closest to Pin, for both Men and Women. Hole in One prizes on all Par 3’s.
Entry fees include all fees, Mulligans, on-line team photos, and post-round buffet meal, and are as
follows:
Active Duty Military & Dependents: $70.00 MilStat A
Retired & Dependents/All Others: $90.00 MilStat R/C

TheMissionofWreathsAcrossAmerica(WAA)istoRemember,Honor,andTeach.ThismissioniscarriedoutinpartbycoordinatingwreathlayingceremoniesonaspecifiedSaturdayinDecemberatArlingtonNa-tionalCemetery,aswellasveterans’cemeteriesandotherlocationsinall50statesandbeyond.TheWreathsAcrossAmericaorganizationalsoorganizesaweekofeventsincludinginternationalveteran’stributes,ceremo-niesatStateHousesandaweek-long“VeteransParade”betweenMaineandVirginiawithstopsalongthewaytospreadthemessageabouttheimportanceofrememberingourfallenheroes,honoringthosewhoserve,andteachingchildrenaboutthesacrificesmadebyveteransandtheirfamiliestopreserveourfreedoms.*
OnDecember12th,2014IwasprivilegedtoparticipateintheWAAeventatArlingtonNationalCemeterywithmyfifteenyearoldson,Jamar.ThiswasatypicalbriskwinterdayintheDCmetropolitanarea.Somehow,Ithoughtthatthedaywouldbeaverycold,solemn,andsomber.Thisassumptionwastotallywrong.Thedaywasverybrightandlively,anditwarmedupveryquicklyaswejoinedthecrowdtogatherwreathsandthenwalkfromsectiontosectioninthecemeterytoadorntheheadstonesoffallenheroes,veterans,andtheirfamilymembers.Thereweremanyyouthgroups(Scouts,CivilAirPatrol,andJuniorR.O.T.C.),veterangroups,andindividualservicemembersparticipating.Ifeltextremelyproudtobeamongthemassestodomycivicdutytohonorthosethathaveservedandmadeasignificantcontributiontothepreservationofthefreedombytheirservicetoourcountryandarmedforces.
ThehighlightofmydaywaslayingaWreathattheheadstoneofmyfriendandcolleague,CSMRickyWitcher.Asyoumayrecall,heservedastheWHCACommandSergeantMajorfromJuly2005untilhisdeathonMay31st,2007.Welookforwardtoparticipatingagainthisyearandbeyond.Lookforinformationonthe2015WreathsAcrossAmericaArlingtoneventinfuturepublicationsandnoticesofthe1600CommunicationsAssociation.
