A very, very, warm welcome to everyone. Yes, this issue covers Christmas! Ihope you will find several things in the following pages which will make yourpresent buying easier. Don’t forget that a hairdressing visit or a reflexologysession, as well of course as the other skin and facial ‘opportunities ofenhancement,’ would be perfect gifts for many people.

I am constantly trying to think of ways we can improve this publication. Do pleaselet me know what you think about it - what you like - what you don’t like - and whatyou would like to see more of - or something totally new. Please email me:[email protected]. I would be most grateful.

Quite often an advertiser will say to me that he is doing very well but not totallysure how many leads came from the magazine, so please can I remind you to tellany advertiser who you may call that you saw his or her advertisement inThatcham Connections. In this way you will help ensure the success and future ofour magazine. Thank you.

My special thanks go to Artesano for letting us use their knitting pattern (page 56).I think there could be quite a few beginners out there, like myself, who will now beencouraged to pick up a needle (or two) and give it a go.

All best wishes for a peaceful Festive Season. I do hope you can enjoy time withfamily and friends and be able to have a good break from the usual routine ofdaily life - at least for a few days.

P.S A little update: starting at the head of the household, DH (darling husband)has enjoyed playing a ‘bit’ of golf recently - sometimes I think it is a bit more thana ’bit’ but the great thing is he enjoys it and comes back refreshed! DD is settlinginto a new job teaching in London and missing her year 6’s at Goring. DS is sobusy in London that we do not see him so much - having said that, he popped intoday, unexpectedly, for lunch which was a treat. I am very much looking forwardto having the whole family home for Christmas.

Jo Ted, Family Practitioner at GardnerLeader discusses the welcomealternatives to court proceedingsduring a divorce.

The breakdown of a relationship is notsomething that anyone would wish forand is often the last resort after longdrawn out experiences. Bitter feelingsand often shattered communications canlead to a very sour ending torelationships.

Clients often consider using solicitors asa last resort; in an ideal world, disputesought to be resolved amicably betweenparties, but sadly this is not often thecase. Developing clear boundaries and aset out structure can often make theharsh reality of a divorce a little easier.Nobody enjoys fighting it out in courts, which can often be a very upsetting, unnerving process and also anexpensive process.

Solicitors who are members of Resolutioncan often help with such situations.Resolution members subscribe to a code ofconduct which encourages and promotesnegotiation and mediation as a first step.

Encouragingly for families from April thisyear, all disputes relating to familybreakdowns, excluding domestic violenceissues, are referred to mediation before anycourt application can be issued.Mediation is designed to assist clients toreach decisions regarding their disputes in anon contentious way. A little like a referee, mediation allows each party to air theirgrievances in a controlled and safeenvironment and to try to reach a settlementthat suits both parties; often this can result inan amicable divorce without the need forcontested court proceedings. The Court isthen only used to record agreementsreached.

Another process to resolve family disputeresolution is the use of Collaborative law. This process is similar to Mediation exceptthat each party has their own Solicitor toadvise and support them and the parties andtheir legal representatives attend round tablemeetings together.

If clients are truly honest with themselves, nobody would enjoy “fighting it out in court”and the other options available can reducestress and pressure and hopefully resolveissues amicably which is especially importantif children are involved.

Gardner Leader has specialists in bothMediation and Collaborative Law and wouldbe happy to give you advice on any of theabove. If you would like to discuss this withany of our experienced team please contactGardner Leader on 01635 508080.

It’s that time of year again. Theannual office get-together andaccepting more invites to nightsout with the girls than you couldever possibly attend.

Christmas is great, but all thatsocialising can become stressfuland a packed diary means less time toprepare for those all important dates. So,what you really need is an easy, effectiveand well-planned beauty routine that’sgoing to save you hours getting ready, guarantee you’ll look gorgeous and ensurethat you’re the centre of attention - for allthe right reasons.

Being transformed from dingy to dazzlingdoesn’t have to take long, but preparationis certainly essential.

Book hair appointments well in advance;it’s the busiest time of year for stylists anda marvelous mane is a must-haveaccessory. As great as it is to try out a newlook, be cautious around the holidayseason - hair disasters are sure to kill partyspirit! Instead stick to a look that you knowsuits you and that’s easy to manage -leave the re-styles until the new year.

Cold winter days, centrally heated roomsand the usual bouts of seasonal flu canplay havoc with your skin, leaving it dull, dry and lifeless. So it’s a good time to takenotice of your skin type and invest in aroutine that will leave it glowing.

Dry, sensitive types suffer more in thewinter and need to be regularly

moisturised. Apply a day cream in themorning and a ‘heavier’ night cream in theevening to keep moisture levels topped up.

Oily skin shouldn’t be neglected. It tooneeds moisturising - a ‘light’ product worksbest, and should be used twice daily.

Combination skin must be managed usinga specially formulated range, in order tobalance the dry and oily sections of theface.

Don’t forget the delicate eye area too - usean eye cream daily to avoid wrinkles.

With hair styled and skin prepped, its timeto find your perfect party make-up look.

It’s a good idea to take advantage of thefree makeovers offered by most of the topbeauty brands at your local departmentstore. Having a specialist consultant offertheir expertise when it comes to the wayyou apply your make-up can result in agreat new look for you. After all, it’s soeasy to become stuck in a make-up rut.And you get to try out the products beforeyou buy.

Take notice of professional application tipsand invest in the right tools - quality make-up brushes leave a great finish.

Establishing what you want from yourcosmetics means that you can find theright ones for you. Long lastingfoundations, lengthening mascaras andvibrant lipsticks work wonders for evening, and will help keep you looking great intothe small hours.

And finally, get your nails looking aspolished as you are. Repair breakage andreinforce damage to the nail surface with astrengthening treatment. File and shapebefore applying lashings of colour. Or, for areally fashion-forward look, try the latesttrend - nail wraps. They’re cute, creative, fun and perfect for a party.

With everything now in place to make youlook fabulous, all that’s left to do is enjoyevery minute of the best time of year andmake this Christmas one to remember.

Can you rememberthe last time youclimbed a tree?I still have fond memories of the funmy sister and I had, as children, climbing the trees in our garden. We used to build forts – fromplanks our Dad had carefullyput aside for a project he wasplanning. We would pretendthe tree was our spacerocket, have tea parties withthe fairies (who lived in thetree) and although we gaineda few bumps, bruises and scrapesalong the way, we were happy andfree to discover a different perspectiveof the world. I often wonder how many ofour children will grow up withoutevery having climbed a tree?

Children naturally love toclimb. At Jubilee DayNursery children not onlyhave opportunities topractice their climbingskills on low branches oftrees, they are encouragedscramble over logs, climbover the farm gates, negotiatetheir own way around theobstacle course, climb on the swing by

the stream or clamber up thebank. All these activitieshelp children gainconfidence in their ownabilities. By providing an

consequences of theiractions and discovering

new adventures, helpschildren gain an understanding

of their own skills and abilities. The joythey experience when they succeed witha challenge and proudly announce ‘I can do

it’ is just delightful.

Just as you probably value yourspecial childhood memories – atJubilee Day Nursery we believeoutdoor play experiences to beinvaluable to a child’s development.

These experiences will probably formsolid childhood memories for them too.

With access to over 40 acres of beautifulWest Berkshire countryside, Jubilee DayNursery has a wealth of stunning outdoor

facilities which enrich the children’slearning experiences all year round. Springis all about discovering new life, bluebellsin Roughwood, the ducklings & chickshatching and the excitement at the newarrival of lambs, kids (the goat kind) andcalves.

Summer means splashing in thestream, building dens,

climbing trees andplaying in the

Through careful planning, guidance andencouragement from our experiencedpractitioners our children spend qualitytime, every day, playing outside. Herethey have the privilege of space and thefreedom to run freely in the paddocks,

When long nights and frosty morningsmake it feel as if winter is never going toend, it’s time to cosy up with a blazing fire, warm radiators or a welcoming stove.Katherine Sorrell’s ideas for overhaulingyour heating will help you make it throughtill next summer…There’s no doubt that we’re all going to bethinking carefully about how we heat ourhomes this coming winter – and sensiblemeasures such as good insulation, draughtexcluders and thermostats will help keepboth costs and CO2 emissions down. Butno matter how many extra jumpers we puton, there’s bound to come a time when wecan’t do without some form of homeheating. And since we’ve got to pay for it,we might as well make sure that it’s asefficient and attractive as possible.First: the traditional fireplace. Many of ushave one and it’s usually a focal point of aliving room – despite the fact that open firesare shockingly poor heat producers, operating at around just 15-20% energyefficiency. If your fireplace as a whole isunappealing (whether or not you want touse the fire as a form of heating), you canusually update it relatively easily just bychanging the surround, hearth and/ormantelpiece: altering the colours, materialsand proportions really does make a world ofdifference. If you haven’t got a chimney, though, thegood news is that you can still have a fire.Balanced flue gas fires require a gas supplyand an outside wall on which to mount thefire, while powerflue (or fan flue) gas fireshave the same requirements, and alsoneed mains electricity. No outside wall? Noproblem. Electric fires can be usedregardless of chimneys, flues and outsidewalls, and can look surprisingly attractivecompared to the ghastly models of old. Andsome gas fires use a catalytic converter toturn combustion gases into harmless

carbon dioxide, so no flue is required.Because no energy is lost through the flue, they are also 100% heat-efficient.The big news in heating at the moment, however, is the wood-burning stove. Inlooks alone, they’re huge attention-grabbers: traditional styles have timelessappeal, while hole-in-the-wall orcentrepiece versions fit wonderfully into amodern setting. And by burning wood fromsustainable, local sources you’re notincreasing your carbon emissions (for moreinformation, go to www.nef.org.uk/logpile).Last, but not least, if you’ve got centralheating, don’t forget your radiators. Arethey giving off enough heat for the room? You can help prevent heat loss – especiallyon an outside wall – by fitting tin foil (orspecial radiator reflectors) behind them toreflect the heat back in. But if they’re simplynot effective enough then considerreplacing them with a more powerfulversion, perhaps in a dramatic modernstyle or in a classic column shape. They’renot cheap, but they are both practical andgood-looking, and will last you many longwinters yet to come.

Dress your homefor winter with

layers of cosiness• Throw down a deeppile rug to add extrasoftness and asense of warmthunderfoot.

• Swap sheer, pale, lightweight curtainsor blinds forsomething heavier –wool, tweed, velvet, even felt, denim ormohair.

• On sofas andarmchairs, pile upcushions for a senseof cosy luxury andadd a throw or twofolded over theback: great forsnuggling under. You could use a

length of tweededged with velvetribbon, chunkyknitting or crochet, fake fur or softfleece.

• Replace pale bedlinen with sheets ora duvet cover in adeeper shade. Addquilts, eiderdowns, bedcovers, throwsand blankets.

• Feature walls mayno longer be cuttingedge, but they’re stillgood looking: paintone wall of a livingroom or bedroom inwarm, boldlycoloured emulsion –it’s easy enough topaint over again ifyou get bored with it.

Fatsia JaponicaFatsia JaponicaFatsia JaponicaFatsia Japonica –––– Japanese AraliaJapanese AraliaJapanese AraliaJapanese AraliaOften incorrectly called the Castor Oil Plant, this architectural evergreen with huge, glossy leaves looks like it should be a houseplant. However, it’s perfect for growingin deep shade on heavy clay soils and there aren’t many plants that survive thosecriteria. It needs to be in a sheltered spot and is fully hardy in most of Britain. Thereis also a variegated form with creamy edges to the leaves but this is not suitable foroutdoors and should be kept inside.Fatsia grows between 3m to 6m tall with an impressive spread. Happy, matureplants produce spheres of tiny, creamy white flowers and if you’re very lucky, thesewill be followed by dark purple seed heads. Keep well watered and fed throughoutthe summer. As with all evergreens the old leaves do have to fall at some point. On the Fatsiathis can look alarming as the leaves droop and turn yellow. This happens towardsthe base of the main stem. New leaves will be produced though, and you canencourage bushier growth by pinching out the growing tips.

Fatsia japonica is the perfect choice of plant togive a sunless corner a dramatic, lush, tropical look.

You don’t need to spend afortune to find a decentgadgety gift, however. Youcan pick up - no punintended - a set of StarWars Chop Sabers,

chopsticksdesigned to looklike lightsabers, for around £11,while the award-winning FroliCatBOLT promises todrive your cat

crazy with a high-tech,laser-powered take on aball of wool for around£19. The completelyridiculous CondimentGun is a £16 pistol forspraying mustard orketchup on your lunch, while the slightly moregrown-up Tovolo TeaGo isa £12 pressthatpromisesperfect teafrom yourfavouritetea leaves.

Buying presents for gadget fans can be tricky, because inmany cases theyalready have what they need. That doesn’t mean you’re stuck with USBlava lamps and iPod socks, though: there are lots of great gifts to choosefrom - and your present won’t end up stuck in a desk drawer somewhere.

FEATURE:FEATURE:FEATURE:

We’ve all watched helplessly as the cost of fuelhas rocketed over the last few years. Doesanyone remember when it cost less than £1 perlitre? Believe it or not, according to the AA, itwas only a little more than two years ago in May2009. Whilst we can’t do anything to beat theincreases, there are ways we can minimise itsimpact. Here are our top 10 tips for improvingfuel efficiency.

1. Check the internet. Sites likewww.petrolprices.com are invaluable as they’llnot only tell you where to find the cheapestpetrol near your postcode, they’ll also tell youthe highest, lowest and average prices in yourarea.

2. Drive more efficiently. The experts tell us thatit’s possible to cut 60% off your fuel bills justby driving more carefully. Don’t ‘warm up’ theengine, accelerate gradually (try to stay under3000 revs), avoid sharp braking, drive in thecorrect gear and at your car’s optimum speed.Stay aware of your positioning and the roadconditions ahead to avoid sudden movement.

3. Don’t fill your tank. Remember that fuel weighsa lot so find a balance between not having togo to the petrol station that often but notcarrying a full tank either, rather aiming forbetween one half and three quarters.

4. Streamline your car. Again, weight is a hugefactor in fuel efficiency. Don’t keep a buggy, golf clubs or other unnecessary items in thecar. Take off roof racks which add windresistance and force your engine to workharder.

5. Keep a regular eye on your tyre pressure.Check your car’s manual to find out what thelevels should be and ensure they don’t dip

lower than this. This will mean your car needsless oomph to keep it moving.

6. Turn off the air conditioning. Many cars haveair conditioning on by default and it does usean incredible amount of fuel so make sure it’sturned off unless you really need it. Similarly, use your demisters and heated windscreenssparingly. However if it’s really hot do use yourair conditioning because driving with openwindows causes drag and is even less costeffective.

7. Avoid super fuels. Unless you have a highlytuned performance car, the difference isn’tnoticeable enough to warrant the extra cost.

8. Choose where you fill up. Again, check outwww.petrolprices.com and plan ahead. Fill upat a supermarket station when you’re doingyour regular shop, particularly if they have apetrol promotion running and if you have aloyalty card attached to the supermarket. Don’tbe caught out with an empty tank when youronly option is a motorway service station.

9. Combine short trips into one longer one. Coldstarts are inefficient so plan ahead and try todo more than one errand when you go out.

10. Last but not least, turn the engine off if stuck ina jam. The general rule of thumb is if you thinkyou’re going to be stationary for more thanthree minutes, it’s worth switching off.

Flyball is a dog sport in whichteams of 4 dogs race againsteach other from a start/finishline.

The course consists of a startingline, 4 hurdles spaced 10 feet apartand a box.

The dogs jump the hurdles andstep on a spring-loaded box thatreleases a tennis ball. The dogcatches the tennis ball and thenruns back over the 4 hurdles.

When the dog crosses the startingline the next dog goes, teams raceagainst each other at the sametime and the first team to have all 4dogs run without faults wins the

heat. This is an excellent pastimefor dogs and owners and can bedone at competition level or just forfun. Why not come along and havea go!

Delta was set up in May2010. Since then we haveappeared on both Newbury Sound& BBC Radio Berkshire.

Delta are about having fun andevery breed of dog is welcome.

We now have 4 competing teams, with many more dogs working theirway up to competition level. Thereare lots of dogs who come alongjust for fun and to socialise.

Thatcham Volunteer Bureau is a localcharity that has been providing a volunteercar service since 1980. Everyone involvedis a volunteer. Drivers make no regularcommitment - they do what they can whenthey can.

Our clients have two things in common. They have difficulty using public transportand live in Thatcham or the surroundingvillages.

Last year we carried out over 4000journeys mostly to appointments such asdoctors, dentist and local hospitals. Wegive priority to medical appointments butwhere possible we try to meet the need forsocial trips such as visits to friends orrelatives, shopping trips or hairdressers. There is strong evidence that these arevery important to our clients and make asubstantial contribution to their health andwellbeing.

The service comprises four elementsPrivate CarsThe main service involves drivers usingtheir own cars. This is a nationallyrecognised form of volunteering and mostinsurers will include cover for this activityat no extra cost. Drivers receive a mileageallowance towards their fuel cost

Chairman CarThe chairman car is a professionallyadapted car that will allow a passenger totravel in safety while seated in theirwheelchair, with up to 3 other passengersif required. This drives exactly like anormal saloon car. The only difference isthat drivers must be instructed how to loadand secure the wheelchair. This is astraight forward process thanks to thespecialised ramp and fixings.

The Handy BusThis is an 11 seat minibus that is providedand supported by West Berkshire DistrictCouncil. Thatcham Volunteer Bureauprovides drivers and fuel.

This vehicle supports other local charitiesby transporting their clients to meetings ortreatment sessions. While the car servicesare mainly provided during office hours theHandy Bus operates during the day and inthe evening as this is when some groupsmeet. In addition to serving organisedgroups we also run regular shopping runsthat serve Thatcham, Woolhampton andCold Ash

The Office StaffThe success of the service relies heavilyon the volunteers who run the office, whichis open Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m.until 12 noon. They take requests fortransport from clients then find drivers whoare available. This is a considerable feat oforganisation as they must take intoaccount the driver’s availability andpersonal preferences. The daily sessionsin the office can be fast and furious.

FEATURE:FEATURE:FEATURE:

I have to admit it: I LOVEChristmas… and if there isone part of it I’d hate to dowithout, it’s a Christmas tree. No, I don’t mean a tinsley oneor trendy black or brownone… I mean a tree completewith needles and ideally thatwonderful aroma that only areal, proper Christmas tree can bring.

If you’re worried that real trees are not goodfor the planet, don’t forget that a Britishgrown tree is most definitely not anecological disaster zone – if you think aboutit, they’re a crop plant rather like a field ofwheat except that they are generally givenless fertiliser and fewer chemicals thanmany more run of the mill crop plants. Sogo on, make sure you buy one thisChristmas!

There are a few things you ought to thinkabout before you buy your tree, faced withrows of different types at often very varyingprices. It can be really daunting, so have aread of my guide to real Christmas trees:

The Norway spruce (Picea abies) is thetraditional tree, my favourite but perhapsnot a favourite if you are more house proud. It has gorgeous dark green pointed needlesand that unmistakable aroma but sadly it isthe most likely to drop its needles. Havingsaid that, if you treat it well, it won’t performthat badly and you can enjoy the lowestcost of the real trees.

The Scots pine is now a regular option asa Christmas tree, with its long paired blue-green needles it’s quite distinctive. Theneedles are fairly densely packed on thebranches and they also hold quite well.

The Serbian Spruce (Picea omorica) haslong been the favourite festive tree incentral Europe, as it’s good looking and hasgood needle holding… but of course noChristmas-tree smell!

The Nordman fir (Abies nordmanniana)has become increasingly popular in recentyears, with its shiny green needles beingalmost impossible to shift, so certainly agood choice for those who hate any mess.

The Fraser fir (Abies fraseri) is lessregularly available, but the combination ofits good looks and needle holding capacitymake it well worth considering.

So, you’ve been persuaded to take theplunge, I hope? But how do you make sureyou buy the best tree of the type you’vedecided on? And how do you help it keepits needles and its gorgeous appearance foras long as possible? It’s important not tobuy a real tree too early as the longer theyhang around after they’ve been cut, themore likely they are to go downhill. I alwaystry to buy a tree produced by a member ofthe British Christmas Tree GrowersAssociation – the BCTGA logo should be onthe tree or clearly displayed nearby. Take abit of time to choose the tree – check that ithas a good, full shape and that its not toogappy or lop-sided (or if it has the leansmake sure that this will be hidden when the

tree is in your house). Check the needles -they need to be glossy (for those varietieswhere this is a characteristic) and thecorrect colour for the type of tree you’vechosen. They also need to be free frompests and diseases - basically anythingyellowed or inclined to shed, or with whitefluffy bits should be avoided at all costs.Never buy a tree that has already beennetted as this makes it a real lucky dipsituation.

If you do buy one quite early then the mostimportant thing is to keep it outside - just re-cut the end of the trunk (yes, its time to digout your DIY saw) and put the tree in abucket of water in a sheltered spot outside. If it was in a net when you bought it, removethis as it’s important to have air circulatingaround the needles.

When you bring the tree inside, try to avoidputting it anywhere too warm or close to aheat source and make sure that you use astand with a water reservoir with waterlevels really well topped up – if kept well

supplied with water then even the notorious(but lovely) Norway spruce Christmas treeshould hold its needles well.

When Christmas is over and it’s time for thetree to come down, complete the green-loop and make sure you recycle it – they’renot the easiest thing to recycle or compostat home, but many councils and gardencentres now offer a recycling and Christmastree chipping service.

Rememberance

It was a heavy weight to carry; a weight thatseemed to grow heavier the longer I carriedit. My arms ached and my progress wasslow. By the time I reached my destination– a St John’s ambulance post at the far endof the showground – I was ready tocollapse. I carefully handed over myprecious weight to one of the first aid team. Now, at last, my two year old son with hisinjured foot could be patched up and the‘crisis’ would be over.

I tell this story because it came to my mindas I thought about the weight (orweightiness) of remembering - like a motherwith aching arms we carry the weight ofremembrance because it matters to us. Wedo not want to forget.

The autumn months are in many ways aseason of remembrance. Beginning with AllSaints and All Souls, and of coursecontinuing with Armistice Day andRemembrance Sunday, this is a specialtime of year to remember the faithfuldeparted.

For those who have recently lost loved onesthe weight of such remembrance can be toomuch to bear and cannot be carried alone. And even for those whose grief is not soraw there can be times when it feelsoverwhelming. The truth is we cannotactually carry the weight on our own, however precious it is to us. This is onereason why the collective act of keeping twominutes’ silence is so poignant – we standshoulder to shoulder as fellow humanbeings and share our remembrance.

One of my favourite verses in the Bible is aninvitation from Jesus to share the burdenswe carry. He says, ‘Come to me all who areweary and tired of carrying heavy loads.Take my yoke upon you and learn from mefor I am gentle and humble in heart and youwill find rest for your souls.’

And the beautiful thing about this image ofthe yoke is that it is not about the weightbeing taken away, it’s about it being shared.Yokes, which haven’t changed since bibletimes, are constructed from a piece of woodcarefully crafted by a carpenter to holdtogether two animals so that they can workside by side. To plough a field, a younginexperienced Ox was always yoked to amore experienced animal. Together, sharing the yoke, the inexperienced onelearned the way to go.

So not only is Jesus saying that the burdenis shared, but he is also saying that wedon’t have to find the way ahead on ourown. It’s an invitation to travel through life, with all its twists and turns, and with all itsjoys and sorrows, accompanied by the onewho knows the way.
