Dr. Jeeves finds solutions to all dental problems at the Newbury Marketplace

Dental Lounge

Dr Jeevana Subasinghe (Dr. Jeeves) is an established dentist in Newbury. He has 20 years of experience and holds full professional registrations to practice Dental Surgery in both Finland and in the U.K.

He brings to Newbury extremely valuable knowledge from working relationships which he has with prominent clinicians and clinics in Finland and Switzerland – where the very latest and state of the art technology is used.

Under one roof all disciplines of Dentistry are performed and all solutions and options offered - ‘All treatments, one responsibility’.

Apart from routine dental care and hygiene, the following are also included: cosmetic dentistry, implantology, orthodontics, prosthodontics (dentures), root canal therapy, oral surgery, treatment of advanced gum infections, guided tissue regeneration, bone grafting, teeth whitening and non surgical wrinkle softening with Botulinum toxin-A.

As you would expect, Newbury Marketplace Dental Lounge is one of the most modern surgeries in the country - impeccably clean, functional and of course equipped with the most up-to-date diagnostic tools. It is BUPA accredited and all work is guaranteed.

Dr. Jeeves firmly believes in allocating his patients very generous time intervals. He knows the importance of getting to know his patients and how vital it is to gain their confidence - then together they can achieve outstanding results. He has much experience in treating nervous children and adults alike, also patients with special care needs.

He runs a very flexible approach to the timing of appointments - evening and weekend appointments can easily be arranged.

Dear ReadersDear ReadersDear ReadersDear Readers

Welcome to issue 32Welcome to issue 32Welcome to issue 32Welcome to issue 32It seems a fair time ago since I last wrote to you. In July, many of the days wereholidays (official and non official !) but now life is back to normal. I do hope youtoo have had some relaxing time off.If you can, do please go down to Lower Way and see the recent developmentswhich have been going on there - Buttercups and Daisies have now moved therefrom Hermitage and Inner Piece Framing has moved across the courtyard intovery smart and larger premises. Thank you to Maria Dobson for helping with thephotos - see page 25.I was very heartened to see on a recent visit to the Hillier Garden Centre atHermitage that a new business has also started up there - Yarn Fest. As thename suggests, it is all to do with knitting - see page 25. It is the perfect first stopfor both those who would like to learn to knit - and those who are alreadyexperienced knitters. Their shop is full of interesting materials - please makesure to go and visit them. Please also see page 29 - Strictly come Dancing! With the Autumn approaching, itcould be just the opportunity for some of you to counteract the hum drum of lifeand any Autumnal blues by not only having a bit of fun but also learning a newskill. Younger readers interested in football could well be interested in joining aClub - see page 52.On page 47 you will see the interesting account of Theresa Wright’s visit toIceland. I was fascinated by it - a real challenge and I am sure you willenjoying reading about it.Finally, if you are at all like me, you will always be on the look out for good valuein attractive cards to send people - be it a little thank you note or a birthday card.In my opinion, you will not do better than buy from Aspects of Nature - see page73. I use these quality cards - and they are brilliant!

Julie Taylor, Employment SolicitorGardner Leader LLP considers theabolition of the default retirement age.

On the 6 April 2011 the default retirementage of 65 was abolished, together with theduty on employers to consider requests towork beyond the retirement date. Alsoabolished was the exemption allowingemployers to lawfully refuse to recruitindividuals who would be 65 within 6months, or who were already over 65, andthe use of retirement as a statutory fairreason for dismissal in its own right.

The Government has provided a 12 monthtransitional period within which the oldrules under the Employment Equality(Age) Regulations will continue to apply. This will only apply to situations whereemployers had sent a letter on or beforethe 5 April 2011 giving notice to anemployee of 65 years or over of anintended retirement date and meeting theother requirements in the Regulations.

When the default retirement age wasintroduced in 2006, the Government hadcommitted to reviewing it in 2011, but thiswas brought forward to 2010. It was thisreview that resulted in the decision toabolish the default retirement age. Thiscan be seen as a reflection of theincreasing percentage of the populationwho are over 65 and need to work longerto save for retirement.

Some of the impacts of the abolition of thedefault retirement age are summarisedbelow:• Employers are no longer able to

automatically assume that it is safeto retire employees of 65 years orover.

• Where employers want to have afixed retirement age or retireindividual employees, they will haveto show objective justification for theirdecision. For example, the employermust be able to demonstrate abusiness need that will be met by theretirement age imposed and that it isproportionate to use that retirementage as a means of achieving thataim. How lenient the tribunals will bein assessing whether the employerhas objectively justified a retirementage remains to be seen. Previousretirement age justifications haveusually been linked to positions thatrequire a high level of mental orphysical fitness.

• There is now no legal framework fordiscussion about retirement at anobvious point, as reaching 65 yearsold was previously. This means thatemployers will need to review theirappraisal systems as this couldfacilitate a discussion of anemployee’s future intentions, although any questions that could beseen to be discriminatory should beavoided.

If you need advice on any of the issueshighlighted in this article, whether forbusiness or individually, please contact JulieTaylor: [email protected] 508

It’s a rare thingto find thesedays but oneof the oldestindependentshops inThatchamis still there -and still helpingplayers from allover to get wherethey want to go.Owner, Rick, is just the man tohelp, having played the guitarand toured all over the world, stopping off in Nashville forsometime as a songwriter tosome of the most well knownnames in the business. As asession vocalist, putting themain vocal down for others tofollow, he has been called a“singer’s singer” by the musicpress. As a noted guitarist he

has shared the stage with allkinds of rock dignitaries, aswell as writing and performinghis own songs to all kinds ofaudiences - after all this, whatdo you do?

“Well”, says Rick, “I justwanted to show people thatwe can all do this - and makingmusic is a really great thing.Helping others to play is very, very cool indeed. A shop likeSticks and Strings is a very“old school” shop. When I was12 years old, living miles fromany shops, I had to learn muchmore than just playing a guitarso I know all about the stuff Isell and how to get the bestfrom it. I repair and serviceguitars and amplifiers - alsoall other musical instruments.I hand build my ownVoodooguitars. These really aretop quality Californian styleinstruments, put togetherin the old way and made to

sound and feel like they have alittle built-in Mojo!”

“These days you can plug into most amps and get a goodsound. The trick is to plug in toanything and get a great sound- that’s the real magic!”

“We have a long list ofcustomers who started playingwith us 20 years ago and stillcome to me”.

“At Sticks and Strings I don’tjust stock and sell instruments. My personal challengeeveryday is to find the best formy customers - so if you have£60 or £1000 I can find thebest for your money. It’s whatI do. I am well known in thetrade as being very fussy.

As far as I am concerned, Ido not keep second best inmy shop”.

“I keep telling people that abig name does not mean it’sgood, it just means you’repaying top price to keep bigcorporations in fancy cars andyachts!”

“There’s a song theresomewhere!”

“We have a wealth ofaccessories and knowledge - Ithinks that’s what I’m tryingto say”.

“I still play out and I amjust about mid-way throughrecording a new solo album. In the shops for Christmas, Ihope! That’s not the title, buthey it could be!”

Thanks, Rick.

Greenthumb, theUK’s leading lawncare company arebelieved to be the firstservice provider intheir industry to offercustomers the optionto pay by DirectDebit and in doingso the opportunity ofreducing costs -in some cases byover 25%.

The innovative scheme wasfirst introduced this springand was an immediatesuccess both with existingand new customers alike. RobPonting, Business Managerin the local area that servicesSouth Oxfordshire andWestBerkshire says “We had anexcellent response fromour customers when weadvised them of the DirectDebit option earlier thisyear, not least because notonly does it allow people tospread their payments evenlyover twelve months, it canalso reward them with asignificant discount depending

on the type of servicethey adopt. It is particularlyconvenient for customers whorequire additional beneficialwork such as Hollow-TineAeration and Scarificationbecause paying by DirectDebit means there are nomore one-off bills to pay.”

There are three treatmentprogrammes that are tailoredto individual needs that canbe paid by Direct Debit, thesebeing offered as an alternativeto the standard pay-as-you-goservice which is of course stillavailable”.

With autumn around thecorner, now is the time tocontact Greenthumb to findout what programme wouldbest suit you, just rememberit has never been moreaffordable.”

Start Planting Nowfor a Great Display of SpringI love September and October, not leastbecause it gives me carte blanche forthinking about something I adore: springflowering bulbs such as daffodils and othernarcissus. Why? Because for best resultsthe bulbs for these spring delights need tobe planted in the autumn. Planted from nowonwards, they have a good chance to growroots and start to build up energy formaking a great display next spring.

Choose your daffodils carefully and you canhave a display starting in late winter (fromvarieties such as ‘February Gold’) rightthrough until mid-spring. When lookingthrough the selection in catalogues or ongarden centre shelves, just check floweringtimes which will be clearly indicated on thepack. Sometimes this will be as numeralsrather than actual dates. For example,February to March could be indicated as 2-3 or sometimes even II-III.

Spring flowering bulbs are generallycompletely hardy in our climate so unlesshit by serious extremes of weather (such asprolonged flooding), they will keep comingyear after year.

There should be planting depths written onthe packs of bulbs you buy or order, but ifnot it is generally better to plant slightly toodeep rather than too shallowly. As a guide,I would advise planting at roughly threetimes the height of the bulb. If planted tooshallowly they don’t perform so well and aremore likely to be accidentally dug up whenyou’re planting other things.

Buying larger quantities of bulbs usuallymakes them significantly cheaper per bulb

and there are always multi-pack offers to befound, so shop about and choose carefully, but whatever you go for, unless you choosethe very elite super-pricey bulbs, they’llrepresent superb value for money. If you’relooking to plant a large expanse, perhaps abank or the area along the sides of thedrive, go for daffodils by the sack ratherthan by the bag.

I’m a real fan of crocus – choose frompurple, lilac, striped, cream, yellow, orangeor white. They’re very good value, buthere’s a word of warning – I always findthat the super-bargain priced mega-bags ofcrocus contain a lot of yellow and orangecrocus which the sparrows love to shred. It’s better value to pay a little more forsmaller single colour bags and avoid theyellows and oranges.

Once established, spring bulbs multiplyquite rapidly, so you should end up withmore than you started with – this means it’simportant to plant at the suggesteddistances apart, even if it may feel a littlesparse for the first year or two. If you want ahigh-impact look from the start, then youcan plant a little closer than suggested, butbear in mind the bulbs will becomecongested and need lifting and replantingall the sooner.

Spring flowering bulbs need little attentiononce established – just give them anoccasional feed and once the clumpsbecome congested, divide and replant themto give each bulb more space so it can fulfilits potential.

Where to grow them:Try simple daffodils like ‘Carlton’, ‘KingAlfred’ or English bluebells grown inrandom plantings, scattered and thenplanted where they fall, beneath trees inyour garden. They’ll look great and oftenproduce a really good display beneath theouter spread of trees where it mayotherwise be difficult to encourage muchelse to grow.

Shrubs and even climbers can also be usedfor naturalised bulb plantings, but becausethey’re smaller, grow the more diminutivebulbs such as miniature Narcissus ‘Tete aTete’, ‘Hawera’, ‘Peeping Tom’, rich bluegrape hyacinths or delicate Chinodoxa.

On steep banks where gardening is difficult, why not grow masses of bulbs? Planting onthe near vertical may be tricky, but oncethere you can enjoy the display for years tocome.

Pots or other good-looking containers makegreat homes for bulbs. If you’ve fallen foranything particularly small or expensive, pots can be the answer and will mean youcan enjoy and not lose those tiny springbulb jewels amongst their larger relatives.

Larger planters including tubs and windowboxes are brilliant for bulbs too – try a hostof golden daffodils in a smart blue pot, some delicate dwarf iris or Iris reticulata in awindow box or pot on the front steps whereyou’ll be able to enjoy their good looks andtheir subtle perfume.

Whichever type of spring bulb you have inmind, and wherever you intend to growthem, start planning and buying now so thatthey can be in the ground promptly.

same small group of people weekafter week, giving a great sense ofsecurity. I have really enjoyed theacademic side of the course andlearning about the psychologicaltheories of human development, including those of the founder of theBPF, Dr Frank Lake”.

John, who will also be startingthe fourth year in October, feels thatthe course has opened new vistasin terms of his understanding andawareness of himself, and hencehis ability to work with others in atherapeutic relationship. John said;“The experiential nature of the coursehas meant that I have learned byworking with other students bothin one-to-one practice therapysessions, and within groups. Whereit was possible to use an experientialapproach to study theory, it hasbeen used. Whilst we are requiredto undertake significant academicreading apart from the coursedays, the ability to discuss difficultconcepts in an open and supportiveenvironment has been invaluable. The other very important dimensionis that the ratio of tutors to studentsis much lower than many othercourses, meaning that each studentgets more personal support andfeedback.”

Sarah has just finished the secondyear and she feels that the course

has been truly inspirational. “I havelearned so much about myself andthe experiential angle has enabledme to approach many psychological

theories from a personal viewpoint. This has been consolidated throughthe two residential weekends eachyear, which really have helped meto progress on the journey of selfunderstanding and awareness. The guidance and teaching of thevery experienced tutors and visitingspecialists has been a revelationand I also feel that the support andguidance of my fellow students hashelped to understand the importanceof the relationship with clients, andto understand what it means ‘being’with them in the consulting room.”

Helen, having completed the

first year, feels that the course hasbeen challenging, but it has enabledher to move forward emotionally:“The environment of the coursehas provided ‘a soft place tofall’, to examine difficult personalexperiences in a very safe place, increasing my self awareness aswell as enabling me to understandand develop empathy for others.I have experienced the course asa very holistic place to learn abouttherapy. The course, being highlyexperiential, helps in this regard asit provides a counter-balance to thenecessary academic content. Thissupportive environment has alsohelped to me to make sense of thepersonal therapy I am undergoing, making me more equipped to workwith others with difficult emotionalexperiences and backgrounds”.

John also observed that theBPF course is: “An excellentcourse which I would recommendto anyone wanting to embarkon an integrative psychotherapyqualification”

The course commences againon the October 6, 2011. Ifyou would like to know more, contact the BPF administrator [email protected] , ortelephone Angela or Lynn on +44(0)151 652 0429.www.bridgepastoral.org.uk

FEATURE:FEATURE:FEATURE: Our Health Therapist - Theresa Wright

This issue I am going to take the opportunity to tellyou about Iceland.

I have recently done the Moonwalk in Iceland. TheMoonwalk is run by Walk-the-Walk, a grant makingcharity that raises money for breast cancer causes,as well as encouraging women and men to getfitter. This year alone, it has raised just under £5million.

This year was the first official Walk-the-WalkIceland challenge. Forty of us set off fromHeathrow on Thursday 16th June. Our flight tookus first to Reykjavik where we had couple of hoursto wait for our onwards flight to Akureyri. We spentthe time in the Blue Lagoon. This is a natural geothermal lagoon. The silica in the water turns it anopaque blue and the lovely warm waters aretherapeutic – especially beneficial for thosesuffering from psoriasis. Various island stations arespaced out in the lagoon where you can buy adrink or slap on a silica based face pack. This issuch a weird experience, as it was trying to snowthe day we were there. Nice and warm in thewater, but a chilly dash to the changing rooms. The Icelandic people are very fussy about theirchanging rooms; make sure you have dried offcompletely before you go to put your clothes on.Dripping wet bodies are not well tolerated in the“dry” changing area!

A short flight and coach journey took us to LakeMyvatn where we were staying for the weekend. The landscape is like nothing you will have seen

before. Iceland is an out-of-this-worldexperience. I had real difficulty in convincingmyself that I was still on planet Earth. It iswindswept, flat, mostly treeless, with steamcoming out of the ground. Around the bubblingmud areas the soil can be deep red, aroundthe extinct volcanoes the ground is black andlike shale. There are also areas of lush greenvegetation, such as Asyrgi National Park, which from the air looks like a horseshoe - andtherefore has the myth that Sleipnir, Odin’shorse touched the ground here.

Mythology plays a large part in everyday life.In fact 30% of the population (total populationabout 350,000) believe in elves. Conversely,30% of them have degrees (another 30%perhaps?). Everyone in Iceland can read. Thesignificance of this is that the colonial breakfrom Denmark has been a peaceable affairunlike many other countries that have had -and continue to have - conflict in their battle forindependence.

The walk itself was long and hard. With only40 participants, the support team had theirwork cut out driving up and down the lineencouraging, singing, offering sweets and soupto keep us all going. I had my trusty iphoneand listened to a story, but still did not do asgood a time as I would have liked. I feel I am apioneer, however, having visited thisextraordinary place; and if you want a reallydifferent challenge, there will be anotheropportunity next year!

FEATURE:FEATURE:FEATURE:

Although most people have good intentions whenit comes to being ‘green’, any incentive that tiesan environmental initiative with a way of savingmoney is much more likely to turn thoseintentions into action. With the April 2010introduction of a government scheme called FITs,solar power is exactly that combination and hasbecome very popular over the last year. If you arewondering if solar energy could be a good choicefor you, here are some answers to the mostfrequently asked questions. What are the basic requirements for solar panels?

The main requirement – rather obviously – is thatthe panels have maximum exposure to light. Theyare generally put on the roof because they won’tbe blocked by objects, trees and other buildings. The roof should ideally be south facing andalthough it is possible to use a roof that’sbetween due east and south, or between due westand south, the further away from true south youare, the less output you are likely to achieve.Solar panels need light so less electricity will begenerated on shorter winter days and althoughthey will work on cloudy days, the performancewill be reduced compared to a sunny day. Finally, although the north of the countrynaturally receives less sunshine than the south, they do have longer days in the summer. Thenorth won’t be able to benefit quite as much asthe south but it is still worthwhile. Can I cut my electricity bill to zero?

Perhaps one of the prime misconceptions aboutsolar energy is that you will no longer have anelectricity bill. Unfortunately this is not true asyou will not be generating energy when it is dark, yet are still likely to be using it with yourtelevision, computers and even the fridge andkettle. Most domestic installations have little orno capacity to store electricity.

It is recommended therefore that you makeuse of your electrical appliances during the dayso you are using your own generated electricityrather than having to take power from thenational grid which will be charged to your usualbill. For example you would use your washing

machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher and possiblythe oven in the daytime rather than the evening. What’s the government’s incentive scheme? The government’s Feed-in Tariff (FITs) schemebecame available in the UK (except NorthernIreland) in April 2010. The scheme guarantees aminimum payment for all electricity generated(the generation tariff) whether you are using it foryourself or not. Then there’s an additionalpayment (export tariff) for the electricity exportedto the National Grid. Tariffs are even index-linkedso the income will hold its value for the entire lifeof your system.

The total amount of electricity generated ismeasured by a meter in your property. Butmeasuring the amount of electricity you areexporting to the grid is usually either not possibleor not financially viable (for domesticinstallations) so in most cases it is assumed thatyou are exporting 50% of all electricity yougenerate and your payment will be based on that. How much can I save? The Energy Saving Trust gives the followingexample of potential cost savings (per annum):Generation tariff £770Export tariff £30Reduction in current electricity bills £120TOTAL £920.Installation size of 2.2kWp. Based on a tariffrate of 41.3p/kWp, export rate of 3p.

This is a great return on your investment(typically 8 – 12%) and certainly higher than mostsavings plans. Of course the one little caveat hereis that you no longer have your capital sum todraw on if money is a bit tight. You will haveincreased the value of your property, but it isunlikely you will want to sell up just to tide you

Page 51: Thatcham Connections Issue 32

Please men on Thatcham Connec ons when responding to adver sements. 51515151

over a short term budget shortfall. What about water heating?

If your water is usually stored in a cylinder and isheated by either electricity or gas, you could alsobenefit from installing a second type of solarpanel which heats water. Unlike electricity whichis difficult to store, storing heat is much easierand it’s likely you already do this anyway so thatyou can always have hot water on demand. Youwill need some checks made on your home waterheating arrangements to see if it would besuitable.Could I change my heating system over to solar? In theory yes, in practice no. The times when youneed your heating are in the winter – less light –and at night – no light. If it’s a bright sunny daybetween May and September it’s unlikely that youwill be running your heating. What are the costs?

Like any property improvement it does dependson a number of factors. If you are installingpanels on a two bedroom home, it’s going to be alot less expensive than equipping a mansion. Abungalow – if suitable – may be a lower cost as

the scaffolding requirement will be less. But abudget of between £4,000 and £14,000 will covermost standard domestic installations. How do I choose who to do my installation forme?

As with any other significant property work, choose a reputable company and preferably alocal one. Ensure you have carried out somebasic research on the technology before youinvite a company to quote so that you can gaugeif they are knowledgeable and that the potentialreturns aren’t being exaggerated. Ask forreferences from other customers in the area. Finally look for accreditations. Learning through the outdoors…At Jubilee DayNursery, we arepassionate aboutproviding uniqueoutdoor learningexperiences andbelieve that these areinvaluable to a child’sdevelopment.

These outdoor experiencesboost children’s self-esteem andconfidence, as well as developingan awareness of the world aroundthem and the needs of others. But more importantly, theseexperiences encourage childrento question and explore their ownchoices - a skill which will staywith children for their wholelearning journey.

All the Children at Jubilee Day Nurserygo on regular expeditions to visit thefarm animals in their paddocks at ‘UpperLodge Farm’ and explore our privatenatural woodland - ‘Roughwood’.

On these trips, children have the time andspace to run freely and ‘discover’ new aspects

of the natural woodland environment with themany different creatures living there. Childrencan learn to take risks, socialise, negotiate, take turns and begin to solve problems usingtheir own initiative. The children pretend to goon camping holidays, use sticks forcounting, drawing pictures inthe mud or to build a den.

To find out more about this amazing learning experience, pleasecontact our Nursery Manager, Lesley Thompson on 01189 701600or request a full prospectus from our website www.jubileedaynursery.co.uk

Spice of Life - CarawayCaraway seeds are one of the oldest cultivatedspices. The caraway plant is easy to grow and theleaves and roots are also edible. Julius Caesar’sarmy made bread from the ground roots of thecaraway plant, which look like parsnips. The small, brown, ridged caraway seeds look very similar tocumin but their flavours are very different. Carawayseeds have an aniseed taste and are used in manyEuropean dishes including sauerkraut, rye bread, sausages, various cheeses andthe delicious British seedcake. The seeds keep their flavour for a long time if storedin an airtight container in a dark place.

Due to its long history, caraway has a number of intriguing beliefs attached to it.Ancient Egyptians put the seeds into tombs with their dead to protect against evilspirits. Other cultures made it into a love potion. Another belief was that it preventedtheft and voluntary straying. Anything from possessions, people and livestock wouldhave been rubbed with caraway.

Medical applications of caraway are mainly as a digestive. It has beenrecommended for curing colic and for settling nausea. Seeds are also chewed tofreshen breath and flavours mouthwash, toothpaste and chewing gum.

Foot CareFoot CareFoot CareFoot CareIt is wonderful to be able to throw off ourboots and socks during the summer and towear colourful open shoes. But if you havecracked heels and overgrown toenails, those summer sandals should be left in thecupboard until you have taken the time togive your feet a bit of love and attention.

Dry heels or any areas of hard skin are thefirst uglies that should be dealt with. With thetrend of taking a shower rather than a bath –all the more so in the summer – your feetdon’t have a chance to soak. Run a bowl ofwarm water with some moisturising bath oilor even a little olive oil. Leave your feet tosoak for at least five minutes, then using apumice stone or foot file rub away the hardareas. Using an exfoliating granular footscrub will remove surface dry skin from thewhole foot.

Toenails next. They should be cut straightacross with a strong pair of nailclippers, thenany rough edges taken off with a good

quality nail file. Don’t cutthem too short though oryou risk exposing delicateskin. Put some cuticleremover cream around thebase of the nail, then usingan orangewood stick gentlypush the cuticles back.

Hairy toes might havebeen fine for Bigfoot, but it’s not a goodlook for you, so usewax or cream toremove any hair onyour toes. Then apply a richmoisturizer all over your feet and leave it tosoak in for as long as possible.

Use a little nail varnish remover to clean yourtoenails before applying two thin coats ofnail varnish. Finally, if you find that you have difficultyeven reaching your feet, let alone scrubbingand clipping, a professional pedicure is wellworth the money and will last several weeks.

Prayer - the transforming friendship

Eleven year old Robert had not done hishomework and had not prepared for his writ-ten test in geography. He struggled throughthe exam, doing a lot more guessing than heshould have. That evening he began to worry. What if too many of the answers had beenwrong? What if he failed the test? That night,as he said his prayers, he suddenly blurted anervous postscript: ‘And please God, makeParis the capital of Sweden.’Sometimes our prayers can be rather like this- we want results from God; we want God tosort things out for us and for others, and soalthough we know it is ridiculous to pray forParis to become the capital of Sweden, wecan easily slip into this kind of praying. But perhaps prayer at is deepest is not somuch about getting God to change his mindbut allowing God to change ours. Many yearsago I worked in an office next to a lady wholiked to display various slogans, bible verses, and aphorisms around her work station - oneof these said, ‘Prayer Changes Things’. I hada strong desire to cross out the word ‘things’and write ‘me’. Prayer changes me - I knowthe truth of that - and the closer I am to Godthe more capable I become of changingthings. So, seen like this, prayer is the practice ofsetting aside time and space just to keepcompany with God, to give him our full atten-tion. This can be done walking in the woods, sitting in the garden, enjoying the sacredspace of a church building - there are nospecial requirements, other than the need tofind a little bit of peace and quiet. Wordsaren’t even necessary; we can simply askGod to be with us, and to inspire the thoughtsof our hearts. Archbishop Rowan Williamsuses the analogy of sunbathing - ‘prayer’, hesays, ‘is like simply lying in the sun and allow-ing the light to get to us.’When God seems far away and I feel like one

who throws ‘gravel at the sky’s window, hop-ing to attract the loved one’s attention’, as thepoet R S Thomas so wonderfully puts it, Ioften return in my imagination to this story ….One day a friend of mine was walking througha shopping centre with his two year old son.The child was in a particularly cantankerousmood, fussing and fuming. The frustratedfather tried everything to quiet his son butnothing seemed to help. Then, under somekind of special inspiration, the father scoopedup his son and, holding him close to hischest, began singing an impromptu love son.None of the words rhymed. He sang off key.And yet, as best he could, this father begansharing his heart. ‘I love you, make me hap-py. I like the way you laugh.’ On they wentfrom one shop to the next. Quietly the fathercontinued singing off key and making upwords that did not rhyme. The child relaxedand became still, listening to this strange andwonderful song. Finally they finished shop-ping and went to the car. As the fatheropened the door and prepared to buckle hisson into the car seat, the child lifted his headand said simply, ‘sing it to me again, Daddy!Sing it to me again.*Prayer is a little like that. With simplicity ofheart we allow ourselves to be gathered upinto the arms of the Father and let him singhis love song over us.

Revd Becky Bevan

The departure of summer can be depressing, but autumn has much to offer. The landscape isbeautiful, especially if you have the good fortune tolive near the New Forest, which can be ablaze withyellow, gold and red.

Autumn is, of course, the time of mists andmellow fruitfulness. Late blackberries, chestnuts, mushrooms, hazelnuts, rosehips – and sloes (whichwill make gin in time for Christmas).

Fungi are mainly autumnal. In woodlands andforests, you can find a wonderful variety ofmushrooms, toadstools, earth balls, puffballsand bracket fungi. But even with experience andmodern field guides, identifying them can be trickyand time-consuming.

Mycologists (botanists who specialise in fungi) usescientific names as a matter of routine. Englishnames have been coined for some of the betterknown mushrooms and toadstools: Shaggy Caps(also known as Lawyer’s Wigs), Parasols, the OysterMushroom, the Beefsteak Mushroom, the PennyBun – to say nothing of the Death Cap and theDestroying Angel. In truth, I’ve seldom heard theseallegedly popular names used.

There are thousands of different species ofmushroom and toadstool. A few are edible anddelicious. A few are poisonous, some fatal. Thegreat majority lie somewhere in between: not verynice, but not harmful either.

If you want to experiment with some of the ediblespecies, there are plenty of booksavailable to help you identifythem. But remember that the onlyreally safe way is to identify withcertainty anything you’re goingto eat. Disregard all those old sawsabout blackening sixpences or beingnibbled by rabbits. Some of thedeadliest species can be eaten withimpunity by other mammals.

I’ve tried a dozen or so species overthe years, but for my money there’slittle to beat the traditional mushroomfamily, Agaricus. There’s a variety ofclosely related species in the family, but the oneto watch out for is the so-called Yellow Stainer(Agaricus xanthodermus). Looking like a horse

The end of summer is unmistakably upon us. Cooler, greyer, darker earlier. Heavy dew in the morning. Autumn beckons.

mushroom, this species immediatelyturns bright yellow when cut or bruised. It won’t kill you, but it can make youvery sick.

The family Amanita contains thedeadliest of all species, the Death Cap(Amanita phalloides). The tiniestquantity can bring death in appallingagony There is also has the all-whiteDestroying Angel (Amanita virosa)and that toadstool beloved of elvesand goblins, the Fly Agaric (Amanitamuscaria), with its red cap and whitespots. One way to be sure of avoidingthese most deadly of toadstools isnever to eat anything whose gills are

white. But, again, there is only onesensible rule: if you don’t know

with certainty what it is, don’teat it.

Perhaps the safest and mostenvironmentally friendly way toenjoy autumn’s fungal feast is

to photograph it. Then you canspend as long as you like poringover books trying to decide whatyou’ve seen. The book I usemost is a photographic guide,‘Mushrooms’ by Roger Phillips

(Macmillan Reference, 2006).

Of course, you don’t have to struggleto identify fungi. You can always justenjoy their strange beauty.
