Wednesday February 13 2019 From Sue School Council Elections School Council elections will be held during February and March. All councillors except the principal have a two year term of office. The principal is the executive officer of the council and therefore has ongoing membership. Hampton has a council comprising 15 people: 8 parent members and 5 Department of Education and Training (this includes the principal) and provision to co -opt two community members. In order to ensure that school organisation has continuity and important decisions are made as required, half the council turns over each year. This means the school would always have some councillors who have at least one years experience on council. We have vacancies for four parents, one co-opted member and two teachers (or Department of Education and Training members). School Council meets once a month on a Tuesday commencing at 6.30pm with the meetings going for approximately two hours. In addition, school councillors are asked to serve on one committee. Committees usually average one meeting a month and are required to report to council regularly. We have the following committees in operation: Buildings and Grounds, Education, Finance, Fundraising, Grants and Canteen. From time to time additional working parties are established as required. We currently have a working party called Movers and Shakers who are focusing on garnering support for the development of a new netball stadium for our school, one that could also accommodate whole school assemblies. For parents who have an interest in education generally and a commitment to Hampton, we would welcome your input on council. Nomination forms will be available from the school office on Friday February 15. The following councillorsterms expire in March 2019: Kelly Anquetil, Nicole Jacobs, Fiona Loveland, Fiona Nicholls, Mark Alexander, Kath Blackham (Parents Association representative), John Painter and Tim Bernau. The remaining councillorsterms expire in 2020: Natasha Burns, Aaron Dowling, Alana Steele, Nicky Tracey, Tom Prendergast, Ruth Henwood. Please note the timeline below: Friday 15 February Nominations open Friday 22 February Nominations close at 4pm Wednesday 27 February Distribute ballot papers (if required) Wednesday 13 March Ballot closes at 4pm Thursday 14 March New council members announced.

For some children, this process took them out of their comfort zone but all embraced the challenge and tried their best. I was delighted to note the enthusiasm, strong interest and varied ideas and suggestions for school improvement that many shared at the interviews. Last Friday at assembly our Year 6 student leaders received their badges. We were fortunate to have Mr James Newbury, the Victorian Member of Parliament representing Brighton in attendance; he congratulated each child and wished them well on their leadership journey. I extend congratulations to the following students and wish them a happy and productive year as they develop their skills and confidence in their leadership role: School Captains: Saxon Taranto and Amy Simos Youth Ambassadors: Olive Tuppen and Jackson Follett Music Captains: Sofia Edwards and Patrick Hill Band Captains: George Pidduck and Ruby Landry String Captains: Anna Alexopoulou and Rocco Theuma Peacemaker Leaders: Cara Sharpe and Kat Johnson Friendship Captains: Marcus Holdsworth and Grace McMahon Art Captains: Jazzie Marcus and Melody Bowen ICT Captains: Jake Fix and Oscar Johnston Environment Leaders: Ruby Morgan and Bianca Stewart LOTE: Amelie Taylor and Verdant Kulkarni

Welcome Barbeque Last Friday our Dads’ Club organised an after school welcome barbeque for the preps and new families to Hampton. This was well attended and a delightful and friendly atmosphere prevailed. This was a great way to start the weekend. My sincere thanks go to Mark Alexander, the coordinator of the Dads’ Club who organised this event with a minimum of fuss, commandeered some help with cooking sausages and serving and generated $378.90 in profit for our school. Parent Helpers in the Classroom Course Parents are warmly invited to attend a parent information evening to learn about helping with English and Mathematics in the classroom. This session will also include a closer look at Write to Read, which is our approach used to teach children understandings of phonograms (sounds and letter combinations) and the “Usuallies” (rules) that make up the English language and how to apply these understandings to their reading and writing.

We will discuss the classroom structure and routines during English and Maths sessions and your role as a parent helper. Information will be provided about the approaches to teaching English and Maths that we follow at Hampton. The Write to Read information will be of interest to parents of children from Foundation to Year 4 and the classroom help component will focus mainly on the Early Years structure but will be relevant for parents at all year levels. The session will be held in the BER building from 6pm to 7.30pm on Thursday 14 March. Childcare will be available on the night for a nominal fee (for school aged children only).

Fact Sheet No 1. School council elections – Information for parents

What is a school council and what does it do?

All government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally constituted bodies that are

given powers to set the broad directions of a school in accordance with their constituting Order and the

Education and Training Reform Act 2006. In doing this, a school council is able to directly influence the

quality of education that the school provides for its students.

Who is on the school council?

For most primary school councils, there are three possible categories of membership:

A mandated elected Parent member category – more than one-third of the total members must be from this category. DET employees can be Parent members at their child’s school as long as they are not engaged in work at the school

A mandated elected DET employee member category – members of this category may make up no more than one-third of the total membership of school council. The principal of the school is automatically one of these members

An optional Community member category – members are co-opted by a decision of the council because of their special skills, interests or experiences. DET employees are not eligible to be Community members.

For all schools with a year 7 and above cohort, there is a fourth category of membership:

A mandated elected Student member category, 2 positions.

Generally, the term of office for all members is two years. The term of office of half the members expires

each year, creating vacancies for the annual school council elections.

Why is parent membership so important?

Parents on school councils provide important viewpoints and have valuable skills that can help inform and

shape the direction of the school.

Those parents who become active on a school council find their involvement satisfying and may also find

that their children feel a greater sense of belonging.

Do I need special experience to be on school council?

Each member brings their own valuable life skills and knowledge to the role. However, councillors may

need to develop skills and acquire knowledge in areas that are unfamiliar to them. What you do need is

an interest in your child’s school and the desire to work in partnership with others to help shape the

school’s future.

Changes to student reporting in 2019

2019 will see a change to the way our teachers report on student achievement as we shift to a more continuous model of assessment, feedback and reporting. The changes to our approach to reporting are based on data gathered from parent surveys, discussions with School Council and the trial of a more continuous model with students and teachers in Term 4 of 2018. Our continuous model of reporting aims to:

More effectively involve our students in the assessment and reporting process. Utilise Seesaw to capture multi-modal evidence that records the learning journey of our students. This

will see students uploading learning tasks that could include video, image, audio or text across a range of subject areas to more accurately capture evidence of their learning and achievement.

Use assessment and reporting as a key part of the learning process. Student reflection and goal setting will be key components of this process.

Provide documented, timely feedback to students on key learning tasks across the term that can easily communicate progress, growth and achievement to parents.

What are the key changes? Students will upload three 'continuous reporting' learning tasks to their Seesaw portfolios each term

with a structured student reflection and teacher feedback attached. These tasks will be organised into a 'continuous reporting' folder to make them easily distinguishable from other Seesaw portfolio pieces.

There will be a reduction in the length of the teacher 'general comment' in the end of semester report as teachers will be providing more specific, timely and relevant comments on three student learning tasks throughout the term. This is obviously in addition to the extensive feedback and learning conversations that occur between teachers and students in the classroom. The teacher 'general comment' in the end of semester report will focus predominantly on students from social and emotional perspective.

Specialist teacher comments will be removed from the end of semester report. Instead, this will be replaced by one learning task per semester in each of the specialist areas that will be uploaded to student Seesaw portfolios in image, video or audio form with a student reflection and teacher feedback attached. This will allow us to more accurately capture evidence of achievement in these specialist areas.

What will stay the same? The formal student report will continue to have a similar look and feel and will be provided to students and parents at the end of both Semester 1 and Semester 2. This report will contain: The progression point summary page which clearly locates students on the Victorian Curriculum

continuum of learning and represents the growth in learning. Descriptors of each progression point level in Mathematics and English. Absence data. The learning characteristics table that outlines the expected attitudes, dispositions and behaviours that

align with the school norms of Aspiration, Collaboration, Integrity and Resilience. What do you need to do? Download the Seesaw app if you haven't already. Your child's class teacher will communicate

instructions that will allow you to connect to your child's Seesaw portfolio shortly. Seesaw is private and you will only see posts created by your child.

If you used Seesaw last year or have more than one child using Seesaw, you do not need to create a new account.

Look out for the red 'Continuous Reporting' folder in your child's Seesaw portfolio. Attend the year level information sessions next week. More information on these changes to reporting

will be presented then and you will have the opportunity to ask any questions you might have. If you have any queries about any of the information listed above, please stop by for a chat or contact

the school via email. Timothy Bernau Assistant Principal

The Hampton Primary School Dads’ Club has been formed to organise popular activities that provide fathers and male carers of children attending HPS with the opportunity for male connection and having fun in a friendly social atmosphere, hearing from some cool guest speakers, and also bonding with their kids at the epic ‘Dads-Kids Camp’! EVERY dad at school is welcome - it’s a great way to meet other dads and get involved at the school. We get together on a semi-regular basis for activities such as guest speaking events, camping, footy, beer appreciation evenings etc. The HPS Dad’s Club will communicate their activities through the School Newsletter and emails so sign up below. We will also dedicate our time and energy to assist with school fundraising - always making sure we always have a good time in the process! Security at ‘Twilight Carnival’ at Hampton Primary School. Friday March 1st 3.30-8.30pm The Dad’s Club will be providing the security for the Twilight Carnival so I need 10 volunteers for ONLY 1 HOUR! It won’t be onerous as it is only 1 hour, you are going to be there anyway, and you don’t need to be a black belt or have Patrick Swayze’s skill from ‘Roadhouse’. I need 10 guys to volunteer 1 hour of their time as we have 5 x 1 hour shifts to fill in pairs. All you need to do is wear a school-provided hi-vis vest and puff your chest out whilst walking around looking like you are Patrick Swayze in ‘Roadhouse’. To volunteer, please email Mark Alexander (Dad of Lachie Gr1A) [email protected] or 0410 691 047 Managing fatherhood whilst playing and working in elite sport. March 14th A former Australian cricket player, and a Hampton Primary School Dad, David Hussey, will be coming in to talk to the Dad’s Club about managing fatherhood whilst playing elite sport, and also about managing the transition from elite sport after retirement. The talk will start at 7.30pm, the cost will be $10pp and it will be held at Hampton Bowls Club. Due to high demand already, numbers will be capped at 100 so get in quick so you don’t miss out. The camp features two awesome 310m flying foxes, camp fires, indoor rock climbing, ropes courses, ar-chery and more awesomeness (www.forestedge.cyc.org.au)! Just ask the ~170 attendees from the inaugural 2018 camp how awesome it truly was even in crappy weather! Breakfasts, lunches and dinners are included. Don’t miss out as limited spots (last year’s attendees are in) so please contact Mark Alexander ([email protected]) to sign up. WHY A DAD’S CLUB? WHAT THE RESEARCH SAYS Suicide is the number 1 killer of men aged between 15 and 44.

3 out of every 4 suicides are men1

1 in 2 Australian males have had a mental health problem at some point in their lives 70% of guys are there for their mates BUT only 48% would reach out to a mate for help “Harden up! Take a cup of cement!” Maybe this isn’t healthy as new research suggests

some men will take their own life rather than appearing weak and asking for help Blokes, let’s connect, join in, talk, ask, listen, encourage action, check in with a mate whilst

have a cracking time! CONTACT DETAILS FOR DADS CLUB Contact Mark Alexander (Dad of Lachie Gr1A) at: [email protected] or 0410 691 047.
