R C I A - Meeting Wednesday – Sep. 22, 2021 – 7.00 PM

Life is a journey that continually searches for meaning. The human heart hungers for relationships that nurture one’s maturity and ability to love and to be loved. Often as one seeks to fulfill these very human yearnings, the realization that something is missing from life is made. As one reflects upon this void, it is not unusual to discover that this something is God. This awakening may lead to a turning point in one’s life to commit to a relationship with God and seek out a worshipping community to guide one’s journey in faith. Many will ask the question: How can I become Catholic? If you are interested in becoming Catholic or know someone who has an interest, please contact Church Office. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) is the normal way for unbaptized persons and those who have been baptized in another Christian tradition to become a Catholic. We will start our R.C.I.A. program in St. Matthew Parish on Wednesday, Sep. 22, 2021 at 7.00 PM.

LIVING FAITH $2.50

The next issue of “Living Faith” is available at the back of each church. The cost is $2.50. We’re here to help you pray and reflect with the seasons of the Church year.

INTRODUCTION TO THE LITURGY OF THE SUNDAY Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8 * James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27 * Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

Be doers of the word and not merely hearers. We are called to be doers of the word, not hearers only. The statutes of God are provided for our benefit; they guide us in the ways of living with and loving one another. All good giving and every perfect gift is from above, and pure-hearted persons return that love in caring for the weakest and most vulnerable among them. ● In the first reading, Moses proclaims the statutes of the Lord to the people, that they may have both life and land. In the second reading, James instructs believers to be doers of the word, caring for orphans and widows, and keeping oneself unstained by the world. In the Gospel, Jesus confronts the Pharisees and scribes with their hypocrisy, noting that what makes a person unclean comes from within, not from without.

SUNDAY REFLECTION

The readings today discuss two very different kinds of service to God. On one hand, there are believers who offer God “lip-service”. These are the ones Jesus criticizes so harshly, quoting Isaiah: This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. On the other hand are those who offer what we might call “heart service”. People who are doers of the word and not merely hearers. As James writes, Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress. ● The Pharisees and scribes in today’s Scripture demonstrate this “lip-service” to God. They, and anyone like them, immerse themselves in religious customs, but because their hearts are far from God, they are filled with malice. They direct their worship to God, but to fellow believers, direct their arrogance and judgment. No good deeds result from this – no building up of the kingdom of God occurs with this. No life-changing-for-the-good experiences happen in this environment. No opportunities to witness to the goodness of God arise from this. ● What is within our hearts? Do we offer lip service – or heart service – to God? Any small act of kindness or a small gesture from a pure heart can change another’s life and build the Kingdom in ways we could never envision.
