TRANSPORT TO SCHOOL BUSES: Basically, 4 runs contracted by Bowman’s Buses serve our school. KOHUMARU and HIHI runs arrive at 8.10am approximately and BACK RIVER soon after 8.20am. Finally the bulk of our pupils arrive at 8.50am when the start bell goes. In the afternoon the reverse happens. The MANGONUI/TAIPA bus leaves promptly at 2.45pm and pupils wait 30 minutes for KOHUMARU and HIHI runs which leave at 3.20pm. NB. Some pupils transfer at TAIPA to PARAPARA and FERN FLAT runs. Pupils are not strictly eligible on these runs, however, they may travel on these buses as long as no over-crowding exists. Any bus problems contact the school. BUS RULES: To travel on the bus is a privilege, not a right. Children are expected to behave sensibly, protecting the safety of themselves and others. In the interest of safety, the following bus rules must be observed: * Remain seated until bus stops. * When getting off the bus, stand back from the road and wait until the bus has left before walking on. * If your child has a change of destination, (is catching a different bus home) a note to the teacher is expected. This avoids confusion. * If unsocial or dangerous behaviour occurs, then the child in question receives one verbal warning. If further discipline is required, a written warning is received by the parent/caregiver. Repeated offenders could be banned from travelling on buses. Parents/Caregivers would have to make their own arrangements for their child’s transport to school. We have been forced to treat bad bus behaviour very seriously because of the potential danger to all children on our busy roads

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION It is very important for your child to attend some formal Early Childhood Education. This includes Kindergarton, Kohanga Reo, Playcentre and Playgroups. Children get to mix with others, learning social skills and experiencing a range of activities which form the basis of so much learning at school. We are lucky to have excellent facilities available to us in Doubtless Bay. These are listed on the previous page.

EDUCATIONAL AND RELATED SERVICES The school maintains contact with and utilises where necessary, a range of outside specialist agencies. These include:

Health Camp

School Library Service

Far North REAP

Special Education Services

Speech Therapists

CYPS

Ministry of Education advisors

Northland Area Health Board If your child would benefit from any of these services, you will be informed.

MANGONUI SCHOOL Mangonui School is a great school of which the Community is very proud. Mangonui School has managed to utilise available funding to enhance and develop the school grounds and environment. The school is situated in one of Mangonui’s prime real estate positions, sitting in a bush setting with beautiful harbour views. The school has a swimming pool, two tennis courts, field area, two playgrounds, two concreted court areas, a seating area which has been designed to include a stage, the bush area is also available as a play area for the children. We also have a wonderful sandpit which has been shaded. Mangonui School opened in 1858 on this site. Part of the original school is still in use today as Room 5. It has a lovely view past neighbouring historic St. Andrews church and over the upper reaches of the Mangonui Harbour. The Doubtless Bay area is a fast growing area at present . The charm and peace of this busy fishing port obviously hold a great attraction for those weary of city life. The roll at Mangonui School is around 155. The children are delightful. They come from a wide range of backgrounds. The Community is very supportive but at the same time expect a high standard from its school. The socio-economic range within the community is very wide-ranging, from those on benefits through to accountants and small business owners. The local iwi is Ngati Kahu. 50% of our student population identify themselves as Maori. The whole school do Kapa Haka each week. We also celebrate Matariki and other Maori celebrations. We ensure te ao Maori is respected and therefore has a special status at our school. There are at present seven classrooms. The teaching staff are all experienced and very competent. They are dedicated to the children and the provision of quality education. They are forward thinkers who are always keen to find out about new trends in education and incorporate them in their programmes.

We are 100% dedicated to ensuring your child achieves to the best of their ability in an environment that is challenging, engaging and fun. We use the National Standards as benchmarks to identify where your child is achieving at in comparison to other New Zealand students. Our teaching practices are evidence based (proven to work) and we are always looking at

ways we can support our learners further. We have a talented and experienced team of teachers and support staff at Mangonui School.

Your assistance in these activities is always greatly appreciated by both staff and pupils. Parents who assist with transport must have a current driver’s license and their vehicle must have a current warrant of fitness and registration. LIBRARY An extensive range of books is used at the school and the children are encouraged to use this facility. Library sessions are allocated to each class during school hours. Children are expected to treat books with care. We encourage our school community to use this fantastic resource. The idea is to provide opportunities where students are ‘made’ to practice the Key Competencies (Thinking, Managing Self, Relating to Others, Using language symbols and text, Participating and Contributing). We encourage any parents to come and help out. CELEBRATION ASSEMBLY Every three weeks on Friday afternoon from 1.30pm each class presents an item they have worked on to the school and interested parents/caregivers. It is hosted by a different class each time and is very entertaining. These dates are always noted in the fortnightly newsletter. COMMUNICATION Sometimes parents need to take children from school during school hours. PLEASE let the school office know when you are doing this so we can maintain our daily attendance register accurately at all times for your child’s safety. We do not let any-one else pick up your child without your permission, so if you would someone else to do this, PLEASE ring the school. The Principal should be advised of any custody orders involving legal guardianship or access limitations and we treat such information in confidence. ABSENCES FROM SCHOOL: By regulation, once enrolled, children are required to attend school unless prevented by illness, special home circumstances or other similar reasons. If your child is going to be away PLEASE RING to let the school know they will be away and for how long. The school undertakes a daily morning check on the whereabouts of all students. This ensures the safety of students for both parents and the school. The school is required to inform the School Board of unexplained absences or irregular attendance. If unable to phone, please send a note to the school. The Ministry of Education is very clear that if parents choose to not send their children to school that legal action will be taken against them. SCHOOL NEWSLETTERS: The school newsletter is our official means of communicating with your home. They are given to the eldest child in the family and sent home fortnightly, on a Thursday. They give advance notice of coming events etc. Please read these, as dates and times for the monthly Board of Trustees meetings are included. These meetings are open to all parents. We are also happy to include notices for other community groups and organisations. Please ring the office if you have a message, before Wednesday. Class teachers will send home extra notice from time to time. MANGONUI SCHOOL WEBSITE & BLOG: If you are on the internet check out our updated website. HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUES HEALTH PROMOTING SCHOOLS: Mangonui School is a Health Promoting School. This means we are part of a nation-wide group of schools who are working together with the Government and the Area Health Boards to promote health and safety within their school communities. So far at Mangonui we have tackled the issues of shade areas, the wearing of sunhats and keeping our grounds litter free. There will be new issues arising and being dealt with on an annual basis. . BEE STINGS and OTHER ALLERGIES: When we enrol children, we ask parents to note if their children have any allergies or health problems. We ask that parents inform the school and arrange for a sufficient quantity of antidote or a puffer (in the case of an asthmatic) to be kept on the school premises in case the need arises. ALL medicines need to be signed in at the school office and a consent form to be completed. PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE: The Public Health Nurse visits our school weekly. If parents have any worries over matters relating to the health of their children they may contact the school and arrangements will be made for the Nurse or another visiting specialist to see the child. DENTAL CLINIC: The Dental Therapist visits our school every two years. They work in different schools around our area using a mobile clinic. Should your child require urgent treatment you can make an appointment by phoning 0800 MYTEETH (698.3384) SUNHATS: It is the policy of this school that sunhats must be worn during terms 1 and 4. These are our summer terms and students are expected to wear a suitable sunhat outside at all times. Parents are requested to ensure that their child brings a named sunhat to school during these two terms. Students without hats will be directed to play under shade. The school has sunhats for sale. LOST PROPERTY Every effort is made to ensure that pupils’ belongings are not lost or damaged, but the school does not accept responsibility when this occurs. Pupils are encouraged to leave expensive toys or items at home. It does help recovery if all clothing and belongs are named. Please check the lost property box beside the school pool.

ENROLMENT PROCEDURE: Parents please call at the office when enrolling a new student. The Education Act requires parents enrolling a student for the first time, at five years of age, to produce suitable evidence of the child’s date of birth. We also require a copy of your child’s immunisation papers. You may also pre-enrol your 4 year olds. Pre-enrolment means that we have the process complete, and your child may go straight to his/her class on their birthday. The information on the enrolment form is collated for enrolment, school business and emergency procedures. You are welcome to check the information at any time. If you have any queries contact the principal who is the privacy officer. Please give details of any allergies or health conditions your child may have. SOME WAYS YOU CAN PREPARE YOUR CHILD FOR SCHOOL:

Talk with them at every opportunity. So much of later learning is based on being able to speak well and understand when others are speaking. Value their opinion and encourage them to give it.

Read to them as often as you can. Expose them to books. The Kaitaia library is excellent and you can also join our school library and borrow books from here. This is a great way to introduce you child to our school.

Do lots of counting. Anywhere and everywhere and everything. Packs of playing cards are really good for introducing numbers. You can play game to match and order numbers with these.

Help them to learn to write their name. Knowing the alphabet is always helpful - try to match each letter with it’s sound. Learn and use lower case letters (little letters) rather than capitals.

Give them pencils and colouring in felts and crayons. Let them draw and colour in. Colouring in books are great for developing fine motor skills. Even little boys with happily colour in pictures of Batman!

Encourage them to be more independents. Things like carrying their own gear, tidying away after themselves and solving simple problems by themselves helps to develop their independence.

Make sure they are familiar with the school environment. Bring them to play in the playground at the weekend. School visits can start six weeks before they turn five and this is a good opportunity to get to know the teacher and class routines.

If you are positive and happy about school, your child will be too.

How is our School Governed? The Board of Trustees: The School Board of Trustees is elected by local parents and caregivers at tri-annual meetings. The Board of Trustees is a statutory body charged with the management of property, maintenance, finance policy and decision making on behalf of the parents of Mangonui School. The functions of the Board include: a) The control and management of the expenditure of Government Funds allocated to it by the Ministry. b) The control and management of school funds, donations, subscriptions and any other money which may be received by the Board. c) General supervision, care and upkeep of the school buildings and grounds. d) Care and maintenance of school equipment and furniture. e) Governance and policy making. f) Encouragement of sympathetic relations between teachers and parents and support of all activities organised to promote the welfare of the school and to maintain the interest of parents

Current Members of the Board of Trustees are: Chairperson: Darren Brott Treasurer: Steve Robinson Board Members: Donna Yates Dean Gorrie Lydia Lloyd Dave Sedcole Staff rep: Lesley Holemby Minute Secretary: Catherine Sabin
